Abstract:We present a comparative study of the optical and dielectric anisotropy of a laterally fluorinated liquid crystal dimer and its homologous trimer, both exhibiting two nematic phases. In the high-temperature nematic phase, both oligomers exhibit positive optical anisotropy with similar magnitude, which, however, is lower in comparison with the optical anisotropy of the monomer. In the same temperature range, the dielectric permittivity along and perpendicular to the nematic director, measured on magnetically aligned samples, reveals negative dielectric anisotropy for both oligomers, which saturates as the temperature approaches the N–N phase transition temperature. Comparison of the dielectric anisotropies of the oligomers with the corresponding anisotropy of the monomer indicates a systematic variation of its magnitude with the number of the linked mesogenic units. Results are compared with the corresponding anisotropies of the cyanobiphenyl dimers, the archetypal compounds with two nematic phases, and are discussed in terms of the dipolar structure of the mesogens and the dipolar correlations in their nematic phases.

Abstract:We present a photometric method to determine the anisotropic optical constants of several aligned polyfluorene films. These polymers exhibit liquid crystal characteristic under heat treatment and polymer chains are preferentially in-plane oriented on a rubbed alignment layer. A self-consistent dispersion formula of Forouhi-Bloomer model is introduced to fit the measured polarized reflectance and transmittance curves by a global optimization algorithm. The very good agreements between the experimental and theoretical spectra allow us to shed light on the parallel and perpendicular components of optical constant. On this basis, light-emitting devices are fabricated using the anisotropic active films. The measured polarized electroluminescence spectra confirm the optical birefringence. Abstract:We report temperature dependencies of material properties such as dielectric anisotropy, birefringence, splay (), twist (), and bend () elastic constants of the uniaxial nematic (N) phase formed by flexible dimers of DTC5C9 and compare their behaviour to that of a corresponding monomer MCT5. DTC5C9 forms a twist-bend nematic (Ntb) at temperatures below the N phase. Anisotropic properties of MCT5 are typical of the rod-like mesogens. In particular, birefringence increases as the temperature is reduced, following the classic behaviour, described by Haller. The elastic constants also follow the standard behaviour, with their ratios being practically temperature independent. In contrast, DTC5C9 shows a dramatic departure from the standard case. Birefringence changes non-monotonously with temperature, decreasing on approaching the N–Ntb phase transition. decreases strongly to 0.4 pN near the N–Ntb transition, although remains finite. The ratios of the elastic constants in DTC5C9 show a strong temperature dependence that can be associated with the bend-induced changes in the orientational distribution function. The measured elastic properties are consistent with the tendency of the dimeric molecules to adopt bent configurations that give rise to the Ntb phase.

Abstract:The synthesis of bent-shaped mesogens and mesogenic dimers has renewed the field of liquid crystals in many ways during the previous decades, for example, through the discovery of 'exotic' mesophases such as the twist-bend nematic phase and the biaxial SmA phase (SmA b ). Recently, we reported on the observation of a SmA b with a bent-shaped dimer, and on its fast electro-optic effect that we interpreted as a biaxial Fréedericksz transition (BFrTr) of the secondary m -director under applied electric field (C. Meyer et al., Phys. Rev. X, 11 , 031012 (2021)). In this study, we used dielectric and birefringence techniques to directly measure the splay, K11m , and bend, K33m , elastic constants that characterise the elastic distortion modes of the m -director. We observed that during the BFrTr, domains of opposite tilt appear and are often enclosed in elliptical defect loops, just like those observed during the usual Fréedericksz transition of common nematics, which allowed us to obtain the third (twist) elastic constant K22m, from the defect loop ellipticity. Although K11m and K33m are of the same order of magnitude as K11 and K33 in the nematic phase of bent-shaped dimers, K22m is an order of magnitude smaller than K11m and K33m and also than K22 of 5CB. We argue that these features could be generic for the intercalated SmA b phase of bent-shaped dimers. GRAPHICAL

Abstract:Since the recent discoveries, ferroelectric nematics became of upmost interest due to their outstanding ferroelectric properties. In this work, we prepared a series of polar molecules revealing a ferroelectric nematic phase (NF) with a very high dielectric constant (>104). A new motif, which differs from previously reported molecular structures, was optimized to support the NF phase. For all homologues the NF phase was observed directly on the cooling from the isotropic phase and ferroelectric behaviour was investigated by dielectric spectroscopy, second harmonic generation, polarization current measurements and by analysis of textures in the polarized light. The presented materials combine ferroelectricity with giant permittivity in a fluid media at room temperatures, so they appear to be extremely attractive. Polarity of molecules with the strong susceptibility to the electric field represent high potential for various applications in energy-efficient memory devices or capacitors.

Abstract:Measurements are reported of the dielectric properties of three laterally substituted dicyano compounds with large molecular dipole moments perpendicular to the long molecular axis. Results are given for the materials in solution, in the isotropic liquid state, and for one compound in the nematic state. There is evidence of a high degree of local ferroelectric order in all phases, and dipole correlation factors in excess of 3 were obtained. The significance of these observations for macroscopic ferroelectrically ordered and biaxial liquid-crystalline phases is considered.

Abstract:This article reported three derivatives of 2,3,2′,3′ -terafluotolanes, which are prepared with 1-ethoxy-4-ethynyl-2,3-difluorobenzene and 1-alkylcyclohexyl-2,3-difluoro-4-iodobenzene (or 1-alkyl-2,3-difluoro-4-iodobenzene) by Sonogashira reactions.And the iodides are prepared with metal lithium reagents in low temperature from n-BuLi, alkylcyclohexanone and 1,2-difluorobenzene(or 1-alkyl-2,3-difluobenzene ) by a series of reactions. These compounds not only have large optical anisotropy(Δn) and large negative dielectric ansotropy(Δe) ,but also have wider nematic phase temperature rang by a series photoelectricity test and DSC analysis. These materials can improve the respond time and drive voltage in LCD.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals (HBLC) formed by mixing 4-alcyloxy-2-fluorobenzoic acid (nOBAF) and the 4-pentyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5CB) at (1:1), (1:3) and (3:1) (mol/mol) ratios have been investigated. Four HBLC series are prepared by changing the carbon chain length from 7 to 10 designated 5CB/nOBAF. The fluorobenzoic acids (nOBAF) are the proton donors while the pyridine unit (5CB) is the proton acceptors. Thermal behaviour and phase diagrams of the individual series have been established using differential scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and polarising optical microscopy (POM). It was found that all complexes exhibit nematic (N) and smectic G (SmG) phases. For the nematic phase, the dielectric anisotropy was increased while the thresholds voltage was decreased. This can be explained by the strong longitudinal dipole moment of the nematic phase compared to the nOBAF compounds. Furthermore, as the alkoxy chain length increases, the birefringence, response time, rotational viscosity, and splay elastic constant all decrease by the way of the reduction of the order parameter for the longer chains. In addition, hydrogen-bonded proton transfer between cyano and carboxylic acid groups have been explored by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for the first time. GRAPHICAL
Flexoelxctricity of the distorted twist bend nematic phase

Abstract:Mesogenic dimers in the twist-bend nematic phase exhibit much higher flexoelectric polarization than in their uniform nematic phase. In order to theoretically investigate this data, we extend the symmetry based linear elastic theory of the twist-bend nematic phase developed in Phys. Rev. E 92, 030501(R) 2015, by including flexoelectricity under the action of an external electric field perpendicular to the helical axis. We show that at the nematic towards twist-bend nematic transition, a new flexoelectric mode becomes active. Consequently, the present model predicts the increase of the effective flexoelectric coefficient when the system is entering the twist-bend nematic phase. The influence of the flexoelectric coupling on the equilibrium wavevector and the spontaneous heliconical tilt angle are investigated. The electroclinic coefficient is calculated. Finally we argue that the helix could be unwound giving rise to a splay-bend nematic phase.

Abstract:Dielectric and electro-optic properties have been studied in order to understand the effect of the fluoro-substitution on hydrogen bonded liquid crystal proprieties. The fluoro-substitution alters the characteristics of pure LC structure and changes its physical parameters. In the present paper, variation in physical parameters like dielectric permittivity, response time, elastic constant, rotational viscosity etc. has been explained based on many factors. In addition, the fluorine substitution has lead to the appearance of the polar nematic phase.

Abstract:The reactions of different α,ω-dibromo alkanes with (E)-4-(naphthalen-2-yldiazenyl)phenol and (E)-4-(naphthalen-2-ylimino)methyl)phenol, respectively, led to the synthesis of two new homologous series of liquid crystalline symmetrical dimers with azobenzene or azomethine central linkage and containing the naphthalene moiety as a rigid core. Spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and elemental analysis confirmed their structure. These dimers exhibited mesomorphic phases, studied through POM and DSC. Their photophysical behaviour was explored using UV–visible spectroscopy. Remarkably, dimers with even spacer units ( n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) displayed excellent liquid crystalline properties as nematic phases, with extended mesophase lengths and thermal stability for both series. The study revealed the vital role of spacer length in determining liquid crystalline behaviour. The computational studies employed the B3LYP method and electron density method for optimization.

Abstract:We have synthesised and evaluated the physical properties of some high birefringence, lateral difluoro‐terphenyl compounds and mixtures. These mixtures exhibit a high birefringence (Δn∼0.24) in the visible spectral range and a relatively low viscosity. When doped in commercial mixtures, the difluoro‐terphenyl compounds enhance the mixture's birefringence while causing almost no penalty to the rotational viscosity. These mixtures are particularly attractive for achieving fast response times in thin‐cell liquid crystal displays.
Dielectric response of electric-field distortions of the twist-bend nematic phase for LC dimers

Abstract:Wide band dielectric spectroscopy of bent-shaped achiral liquid-crystal dimers 1″-n″-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl) n-alkanes (CBnCB n = 7, 9, 11) has been investigated in a frequency range 0.1 Hz-100 MHz using planar-aligned cells of sample thicknesses ranging from 2 to 10 (μm) over a temperature range that covers both nematic and twist bend nematic phases. Two peaks in the dielectric spectrum in the higher frequency range are assigned to the molecular relaxation processes. The peak at the highest frequency, ∼40 to 80 MHz, is assigned to an internal precessional rotation of a single unit of the dimer around the director. The mode in the next lower frequency range of 2-10 MHz is assigned to the spinning rotation of the dimer around its long axis. This involves fluctuations of the dipole moment of the bent-shaped conformation that is directed along its arrow direction of the bow shape formed by the dimer. The peak in the frequency range 100 kHz-1 MHz can be assigned to the collective fluctuations of the local director with reference to the helical axis of the NTB structure. The dependence of its frequency on temperature is reminiscent of the soft mode observed at the SmA* to SmC* phase transition. This result clearly corresponds to the electro-clinic effect-the response of the director to the applied electric field in an electro-optic experiment. The lowest frequency mode, observed in the frequency range of 0.1 Hz-100 Hz, is identified with the Goldstone mode. This mode is concerned with the long range azimuthal angle fluctuations of the local director. This leads to an alternating compression and expansion of the periodic structure of the NTB phase.
Mesomorphic and geometrical orientation study of the relative position of fluorine atom in some thermotropic liquid crystal systems

Abstract:New series of the Schiff base/esters, 4-((2′-or 3′-fluorophenylimino)methyl)phenyl-4″-alkoxy benzoates were prepared and their mesophase behaviour investigated. The type of the mesophase and its transition temperature were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarised optical microscopy (POM). The optimised structures of Schiff base/ester and their azo/ester groups have been deduced theoretically by density functional theory (DFT). Each group of homologues differs from the other by the position of the fluorine atom on the terminal benzene ring, in addition to laterally neat homologues. Comparative studies revealed that the position and orientation of the lateral fluorine atom as well as the type of the linking core not only affects the melting temperature but also the mesophase stability. DFT results showed that the type and stability of the mesophase could be illustrated in the terms of calculated dipole moment, polarisability, thermal energy and molecular electrostatic potential.
Antiferroelectric order in nematic liquids: Flexoelectricity vs electrostatics

Abstract:The recent discovery of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystalline phases marks a major breakthrough in soft matter research. An intermediate phase, often observed between the nonpolar and the ferroelectric nematic phase, shows a distinct antiferroelectric response to electric fields. However, its structure and formation mechanisms remain debated, with flexoelectric and electrostatics effects proposed as competing mechanisms. By controlling the magnitude of electrostatic forces through ion addition in two representative ferroelectric nematic materials, we show that the primary mechanism for the emergence of antiferroelectric order is the flexoelectric coupling between electric polarization and splay deformation of the nematic director. The addition of ions significantly expands the temperature range over which the antiferroelectric phase is observed, with this range increasing with increasing ion concentration. Polarizing optical microscopy studies and second harmonic generation microscopy reveal the splayed structure modulated in two dimensions, while SHG interferometry confirms its antiferroelectric character. We extend the model previously used to describe pretransitional behaviour by incorporating the electrostatic contribution of ions. The model shows qualitative agreement with the experiments, accurately reproducing the phase diagram and temperature-dependent evolution of the modulation period of the observed structure.

Abstract:This paper describes an experimental investigation for physical properties of fluorinated phenyl bicyclohexane liquid crystals (LCs) mixtures. Measurements are reported of the large anisotropic dielectric properties of two structurally similar LCs (1,2-difluoro-4-[trans-4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)cyclohexyl] benzene and 1-cyano-2-fluoro-4-[trans-4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl) cyclohexyl] benzene) mixed with a zero dielectric anisotropic LC (1-methyl-2-fluoro-4-[trans-4-(trans-4-ethylcyclohexyl) cyclohexyl] benzene). The results indicate that the mixing proportions strongly influence the dielectric constants along with the longer molecular axis. For two samples which is made from meta-para- or meta-fluorine substituted molecules, the temperature dependence of the anisotropic dielectric striking resemble that of a unitary compound with para-fluorine substituted. The threshold voltage of the mixtures relies on the element that possesses a large dielectric anisotropic. The mixing of the materials leads to a slight increase for splay elastic constants in an anti-parallel measurement cell.
How Far Can We Push the Rigid Oligomers/Polymers toward Ferroelectric Nematic Liquid Crystals?

Abstract:The emerging ferroelectric nematic (NF) liquid crystal is a novel 3D-ordered liquid exhibiting macroscopic electric polarization. The combination of the ultrahigh dielectric constant, strong nonlinear optical signal, and high sensitivity to the electric field makes NF materials promising for the development of advanced liquid crystal electroopic devices. Previously, all studies focused on the rod-shaped small molecules with limited length (l) range and dipole moment (μ) values. Here, through the precision synthesis, we extend the aromatic rod-shaped mesogen to oligomer/polymer (repeat unit up to 12 with monodisperse molecular-weight dispersion) and increase the μ value over 30 Debye (D). The NF phase has a widespread existence far beyond our expectation and could be observed in all the oligomer/polymer length range. Notably, the NF phase experiences a nontrivial evolution pathway with the traditional apolar nematic phase completely suppressed, i.e., the NF phase nucleates directly from the isotropic liquid phase. Abstract:This study investigates the impact of fluorine substitution on the properties of N-(4-decylphenyl)-1-(4-(pentyloxy)phenyl)methanimine liquid crystal (5O.10). By systematically replacing hydrogen atoms with fluorine within the 5O.10 molecule, a nuanced understanding of the structural alterations and consequent property variations is achieved. Density Functional Theory (DFT) computations, incorporating the B3LYP functional and the 6-311G(d,p) basis set, are employed to explore the electronic, optical, and vibrational characteristics of the studied compounds. Geometrical optimization reveals dependency of energy on fluorine substitution, while electrostatic potential (ESP) analysis highlights charge distribution variations. Dipole moment analysis elucidates fluorine's influence on molecular asymmetry, with proximity to electronegative atoms affecting dipole moments. Nonlinear optical (NLO) analysis reveals fluorination's impact on polarizability and hyperpolarizability, crucial for optical material design. Raman spectroscopy illustrates vibrational mode alterations induced by fluorine substitution. Overall, this comprehensive study provides valuable insights into the role of fluorine substitution in tailoring the properties of LCs, guiding the design of novel materials for diverse applications.

Abstract:Ion-doped fluorinated smectics are good candidates for use in the dynamic light scattering effect where electro-optical properties of a liquid crystal cell are controlled by changing the frequency of an electric field. In this work, we demonstrate the electrical properties of a liquid crystal mixture exhibiting a monolayer SmA phase. The paper presents a discussion on the influence of the ionic dopant on relaxation processes and electrical conductivity. The temperature measurements of the liquid crystal mixture of positive dielectric anisotropy were conducted in planarly and homeotropically aligned cells from the isotropic phase to the nematic and smectic A phase. The observed ionic relaxation is discussed, and its parameters were calculated and analyzed. The investigated material can be used in smart windows and liquid crystal displays with the memory effect.
