Abstract:Can folding a piece of paper flat make it larger? We explore whether a shape $S$ must be scaled to cover a flat-folded copy of itself. We consider both single folds and arbitrary folds (continuous piecewise isometries $S\rightarrow R^2$). The underlying problem is motivated by computational origami, and is related to other covering and fixturing problems, such as Lebesgue's universal cover problem and force closure grasps. In addition to considering special shapes (squares, equilateral triangles, polygons and disks), we give upper and lower bounds on scale factors for single folds of convex objects and arbitrary folds of simply connected objects.

Abstract:Covering-based rough set theory is a useful tool to deal with inexact, uncertain, or vague knowledge in information systems. Geometric lattice has been widely used in diverse fields, especially search algorithm design, which plays an important role in covering reductions. In this paper, we construct three geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets through matroids and study the relationship among them. First, a geometric lattice structure of covering-based rough sets is established through the transversal matroid induced by a covering. Then its characteristics, such as atoms, modular elements, and modular pairs, are studied. We also construct a one-to-one correspondence between this type of geometric lattices and transversal matroids in the context of covering-based rough sets. Second, we present three sufficient and necessary conditions for two types of covering upper approximation operators to be closure operators of matroids. We also represent two types of matroids through closure axioms and then obtain two geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets. Third, we study the relationship among these three geometric lattice structures. Some core concepts such as reducible elements in covering-based rough sets are investigated with geometric lattices. In a word, this work points out an interesting view, namely, geometric lattice, to study covering-based rough sets.
A generalized geometric mechanics theory for multi-curve-fold origami: vertex constrained universal configurations

Abstract:Folding paper along curves leads to spatial structures that have curved surfaces meeting at spatial creases, defined as curve-fold origami. In this work, we provide an Eulerian framework focusing on the mechanics of arbitrary curve-fold origami, especially for multi-curve-fold origami with vertices. We start with single-curve-fold origami that has wide panels. Wide panel leads to different domains of mechanical responses induced by various generator distributions of the curved surface. The theories are then extended to multi-curve-fold origami, involving additional geometric correlations between creases. As an illustrative example, the deformation and equilibrium configuration of origami with annular creases are studied both theoretically and numerically. Afterward, single-vertex curved origami theory is studied as a special type of multi-curve-fold origami. We find that the extra periodicity at the vertex strongly constrains the configuration space, leading to a region near the vertex that has a striking universal equilibrium configuration regardless of the mechanical properties. Both theories and numerics confirm the existence of the universality in the near-field region. In addition, the far-field deformation is obtained via energy minimization and validated by finite element analysis. Our generalized multi-curve-fold origami theory, including the vertex-contained universality, is anticipated to provide a new understanding and framework for the shape programming of the curved fold origami system.

Abstract:Origami research is always devoted to exploring the transformation from a paper-like material into a three-dimensional (3D) object, which is widely used in the storage of planar structures. However, origami only has a two-dimensional crease map, so it performs limited effect on the storage of 3D surface. Inspired by waterbomb origami, this paper presents a scheme of folding discretized surfaces of revolution to create foldable 3D geometries. The geometries, which are the approximation of target surfaces of revolution, consist of discretizing surfaces of revolution and have 3D crease maps to guide folding. The discretized surfaces constructed by the approaching scheme can satisfy the error requirements and retain the features of original surfaces. The paper verifies the feasibility of the folding scheme by showing the formula of four typical surfaces, including convex shape, concave shape, concave-convex shape and capsule shape. This scheme of folding discretized surfaces of revolution shows the potential of origami to 3D deployable structures in the field of aerospace.

Four matroidal structures of covering and their relationships with rough sets

Abstract:Covering is a common form of data representation, and covering-based rough sets serve as an efficient technique to process this type of data. However, many important problems such as covering reduction in covering-based rough sets are NP-hard so that most algorithms to solve them are greedy. Matroids provide well-established platforms for greedy algorithm foundation and implementation. Therefore, it is necessary to integrate covering-based rough set with matroid. In this paper, we propose four matroidal structures of coverings and establish their relationships with rough sets. First, four different viewpoints are presented to construct these four matroidal structures of coverings, including 1-rank matroids, bigraphs, upper approximation numbers and transversals. The respective advantages of these four matroidal structures to rough sets are explored. Second, the connections among these four matroidal structures are studied. It is interesting to find that they coincide with each other. Third, a converse view is provided to induce a covering by a matroid. We study the relationship between this induction and the one from a covering to a matroid. Finally, some important concepts of covering-based rough sets, such as approximation operators, are equivalently formulated by these matroidal structures. These interesting results demonstrate the potential to combine covering-based rough sets with matroids.

Abstract:Continuing results from JCDCGGG 2016 and 2017, we solve several new cases of the simple foldability problem -- deciding which crease patterns can be folded flat by a sequence of (some model of) simple folds. We give new efficient algorithms for mixed crease patterns, where some creases are assigned mountain/valley while others are unassigned, for all 1D cases and for 2D rectangular paper with orthogonal one-layer simple folds. By contrast, we show strong NP-completeness for mixed orthogonal crease patterns on 2D rectangular paper with some-layers simple folds, complementing a previous result for all-layers simple folds. We also prove strong NP-completeness for finite simple folds (no matter the number of layers) of unassigned orthogonal crease patterns on arbitrary paper, complementing a previous result for assigned crease patterns, and contrasting with a previous positive result for infinite all-layers simple folds. In total, we obtain a characterization of polynomial vs. NP-hard for all cases -- finite/infinite one/some/all-layers simple folds of assigned/unassigned/mixed orthogonal crease patterns on 1D/rectangular/arbitrary paper -- except the unsolved case of infinite all-layers simple folds of assigned orthogonal crease patterns on arbitrary paper.
An Efficient Enumeration of Flat-Foldings : Study on Random Single Vertex Origami

Abstract:This paper deals with themes such as approximate counting/evaluation of the total number of flat-foldings for random origami diagrams, evaluation of the values averaged over various instances, obtaining forcing sets for general origami diagrams, and evaluation of average computational complexity. An approach to the above problems using a physical model and an efficient size reduction method for them is proposed. Using a statistical mechanics model and a numerical method of approximate enumeration based on it, we give the result of approximate enumeration of the total number of flat-foldings of single-vertex origami diagram with random width of angles gathering around the central vertex, and obtain its size dependence for an asymptotic prediction towards the limit of infinite size. In addition, an outlook with respect to the chained determination of local stacking orders of facets caused by the constraint that prohibits the penetration of them is also provided from the viewpoint of organizing the terms included in the physical model. A method to efficiently solve the problem of the determination or enumeration of flat-foldings is discussed based on the above perspectives. This is thought to be closely related to forcing sets.

Abstract:Traditional origami design is generally based on designers’ artistic intuition and skills, mathematical calculations, and experimentations, which can involve challenges for crease patterns with a large number of vertices. To develop novel origami structures for engineering applications, systematic and easy-to-implement approaches capable of generating diverse origami patterns are desired, without requiring extensive artistic skills and experience in origami mathematics. Here, we present a computational method for automatically assigning mountain-valley fold lines to given geometric configurations of origami structures. This method is based upon a geometric-graph-theoretic representation approach combined with a graph-theoretic cycle detection algorithm, taking the subgraphs of a given structure as inputs. Then, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is established to find flat-foldable origami patterns under given constraints on the local flat-foldability and degree of vertices, leading to the identification of crease lines associated with local minimum angles. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach for a range of origami structures with degree-4 or -6 vertices represented by their corresponding subgraphs.

Abstract:At CCCG '21 O'Rourke proposed a variant of Hopcroft, Josephs and Whitesides' (1985) NP-complete problem {\sc Ruler Folding}, which he called {\sc Ruler Wrapping} and for which all folds must be 180 degrees in the same direction. Gagie, Saeidi and Sapucaia (2023) noted that if the last straight section of the ruler must be longest, then {\sc Ruler Wrapping} is equivalent to partitioning a string of positive integers into substrings whose sums are increasing such that the last substring sums to at most a given amount. They gave linear-time algorithms for the versions of {\sc Ruler Wrapping} both with and without this assumption. In real life we cannot repeatedly fold a carpenter's ruler 180 degrees in the same direction. In this paper we propose the more realistic problem of {\sc Ruler Rolling}, in which we repeatedly fold the segments 90 degrees in the same direction and thus fold the ruler into a rectangle instead of into an interval. We should report all the Pareto-optimal rollings. We note that if the last straight section of the ruler must be longer than the third to last -- analogously to Gagie et al.'s assumption -- then {\sc Ruler Rolling} is equivalent to partitioning a string of positive integers into substrings such that the sums of the even substrings are increasing, as are the sums of the odd substrings. We give a simple dynamic-programming algorithm that reports all the Pareto-optimal rollings in quadratic time under this assumption. Our algorithm still works even without the assumption, but then we are left with a quadratic number of two-dimensional feasible solutions, so finding the Pareto-optimal ones and increases our running time by a logarithmic factor. If we have a nice objective function, however, we still use quadratic time.

Abstract:The mechanism with good fold performance derived from rigid origami is widely used in the field of engineering. In this article, the adjacency matrix method was proposed to analyze the degree of freedom of foldable plate rigid origami. This method can also judge the number of redundant constraints while calculating the degree of freedom of the rigid origami. First, the adjacency matrix between vertices of origami structure was established. Then the elimination matrix was introduced, and the process of determining the motion state of vertices was described by matrix product. The degree of freedom of rigid origami was determined by calculating the number of constraints introduced. A method for judging redundant constraints of rigid origami was proposed, and the number of redundant constraints was determined by computing the sum of the row elements corresponding to the vertices. The motion state of the cross-crease vertex was analyzed, and the computational error of the degree of freedom at the cross-crease vertex was avoided by the method of classification and simplification. The degree of freedom of the ring pattern was discussed, and the calculation method of the degree of freedom of whole pattern with many ring patterns was summarized. Finally, the degree of freedom of typical rigid origami was analyzed.
Universal covers of non-negatively curved manifolds and formality

Abstract:We show that if the universal cover of a closed smooth manifold admitting a metric with non-negative Ricci curvature is formal, then the manifold itself is formal. We reprove a result of Fiorenza-Kawai-Lê-Schwachhöfer, that closed orientable manifolds with a non-negative Ricci curvature metric and sufficiently large first Betti number are formal. Our method allows us to remove the orientability hypothesis; we further address some cases of non-closed manifolds.

Abstract:Origami is a “bottom-up” method for surface modeling which contributes to more possibility for the exploration of architectural forms. In this paper, we investigate the geometrical properties of rigid folding and Miura-ori pattern. The geometrical rules in the folding process of several variations of Miura-ori are obtained. Additionally, we present three new variations and describe the folding process in a 3D coordinate system which provides more possibilities for origami surface generation. The folding process is simulated by describing the path of the vertex. This method explores a unified approach to 3D folding model simulation in Rhinoceros/Grasshopper.

Abstract:Origami has shown the potential to approximate three-dimensional curved surfaces by folding through designed crease patterns on flat materials. The Miura-ori tessellation is a widely used pattern in engineering and tiles the plane when partially folded. Based on constrained optimization, this paper presents the construction of generalized Miura-ori patterns that can approximate three-dimensional parametric surfaces of varying curvatures while preserving the inherent properties of the standard Miura-ori, including developability, flat-foldability and rigid-foldability. An initial configuration is constructed by tiling the target surface with triangulated Miura-like unit cells and used as the initial guess for the optimization. For approximation of a single target surface, a portion of the vertexes on the one side is attached to the target surface; for fitting of two target surfaces, a portion of vertexes on the other side is also attached to the second target surface. The parametric coordinates are adopted as the unknown variables for the vertexes on the target surfaces whilst the Cartesian coordinates are the unknowns for the other vertexes. The constructed generalized Miura-ori tessellations can be rigidly folded from the flat state to the target state with a single degree of freedom.

Abstract:This paper presents a mathematical framework for the design of rigid-foldable doubly curved origami tessellations based on trapezoidal crease patterns that can simultaneously fit two target surfaces with rotational symmetry about a common axis. The geometric parameters of the crease pattern and the folding angles of the target folded state are determined through a set of combined geometric and constraint equations. An algorithm to simulate the folding motion of the designed crease pattern is provided. Furthermore, the conditions and procedures to design folded ring structures that are both developable and flat-foldable and stacked folded structures consisting of two layers that can fold independently or compatibly are discussed. The proposed framework has potential applications in designing engineering doubly curved structures such as deployable domes and folded cores for doubly curved sandwich structures on the aircraft.

Abstract:Six segments of quadratic Bézier curve are joined together according to some geometrical rules to approximate fold shape. In a classification of folds based on this method, an ideal fold shape is determined by two parameters. The first one, uc, termed the axial lift-up ratio of the central part, generates the folds within a broad spectrum of forms ranging from box folds to chevron folds. The other one, γ, is the interlimb angle. In the quantitative description of complete folds with multiple layers, three new parameters, θ, T and E are used to describe the deflection angle of the axial plane, the thickness increment of hinge zone and the limb elongation, respectively. Based on the modeling method, the program “Bézier Fold Profiler” has been developed, with which most types of folds can be simulated by varying thirteen parameters. Two description methods, complete fold description and individual layer description, can be used for the quantitative analysis of folds. The description methods are carried out by the visual matching of the fold profile displayed on-screen from an imported digital image. The layer curves of the model are displayed on the fold image. This method has the advantage of speed and simplicity.

Abstract:The curvilinear roofs of ancient Chinese wooden architecture feature unique functional, hierarchical, and aesthetic elements. However, the digitalization of these roofs has yet to be explored because of the lack of accurate mathematical models for these roof geometries. This research aims to parameterize the design and construction rules for these roofs as stipulated in the Yingzao fashi. We first illustrate the major features of curvilinear roofs, followed by a comprehensive investigation on the raising and bending rules via the original texts and drawing samples provided in the Yingzao fashi and the Annotated yingzao fashi by Sicheng Liang. Then, the mathematical models are developed. The main contribution of this research is the transformation of the design and building rules for complex curvilinear roofs into mathematical models, enabling designers to generate such roof architecture and adding new insights to existing mathematical methods in studying ancient architecture.

Free-form Design of Discrete Architectural Surfaces by use of Circle Packing

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient approach for the conceptual design of architectural surfaces which are composed of triangular panels. In the free-form design of discrete architectural surfaces, the Gaussian curvature plays an important role not only aesthetically but also in terms of stiffness and constructability. However, designing a surface manually with specific Gaussian curvatures can be a time-consuming task. We propose a method to find a triangulated surface with user-specified Gaussian curvatures (not limited to constant Gaussian curvatures) and boundary vertex positions. In addition, the conformal class of the final design can be specified; that is, the user has control over the shape (the corner angles) of each triangular panel. The panels could be encouraged to form a regular tessellation or kept close to those of the initial design. The controllability of the conformal class suppresses possible distortion of the panels, resulting in higher structural performance and aesthetics. Our method relies on the idea in computational conformal geometry called circle packing. In this line of research, the discrete Ricci flow has been widely used for surface modelling. However, it is not trivial to incorporate constraints such as boundary locations and convexity of the spanned surface, which are essential to architectural applications. We propose a perturbation of the discrete Ricci energy and develop a least-squares-based optimisation scheme to address these problems with an open-source implementation available online.

Mechanical Model Analyses of a Sheet under Unidirectional Multiple Folding

Abstract:For analysing the unidirectional multiple folding of a sheet, this paper proposes two mechanical models: an elastica/elastica-plastica model for a small number of folds (K) and a sliding-layered beam model for a large K. The deformation profiles and applied forces or bending moments during the multiple folding process were predicted via a theoretical model analysis and verified based on corresponding finite-element simulations. Thereafter, the models were used to answer the interesting question: how many times can a piece of paper be folded? It was found that, for an A4 paper sheet, the maximum number of folds is 8; this is consistent with common experience.
A General Simulation Method for Complex Deformation of Irregular-Shaped Origami Configurations

Abstract:Most existing treatments for origami-folding simulations have focused on regular-shaped configurations. This article aims to introduce a general strategy for simulating and analyzing the deformation process of irregular shapes by means of computational capabilities nowadays. To better simulate origami deformation with folding orders, the concept of plane follow-up is introduced to achieve automated computer simulation of complex folding patterns, thereby avoiding intersection and penetration between planes. Based on the evaluation criteria such as the lowest storage energy with tightening and the fastest pace from tightening to unfolding, the optimal crease distribution patterns for four irregular ('N'-, 'T'-, 'O'-, and 'P'-shaped) origami configurations are then presented under five candidates. When the dimensions of the origami are fixed, it is discovered that simpler folding patterns lead to faster deformation of the origami configuration. When the folding complexity is fixed, higher strain energy results in more rapid origami expansion.
