Abstract:Nanostructures of conventional metals offer manipulation of light at the nanoscale but are limited to static behavior due to their fixed material properties. To develop the next frontier of dynamic nanooptics and metasurfaces, we utilize the redox-tunable optical properties of conducting polymers, which were recently shown to be capable of sustaining plasmons in their most conducting oxidized state. Using nanodisks of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:sulfate) (PEDOT:Sulf) as a model system, we present the first electrically tunable conducting polymer nanooptical antennas. In addition to repeated on/off switching of the polymeric nanoantennas, we demonstrate the possibility for gradual electrical tuning of their nanooptical response, which was found to be related to the modulation of both density and mobility of the mobile polaronic charge carriers in the polymer. The presented concept takes important steps towards electrically tunable metasurfaces with truly dynamic optical nanoantenna pixels, with not only varying farfield but also tunable nearfield. The work paves the way for applications ranging from tunable flat metaoptics to adaptable smart windows.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop a nano - antenna system capable of dynamically adjusting optical properties. Although traditional metal nanostructures can manipulate light at the nanoscale, their material properties are fixed, resulting in static behavior and being difficult to modify after manufacturing. To overcome this limitation, researchers have utilized the redox - tunable optical properties of conductive polymers (such as poly(3,4 - ethylenedioxythiophene: sulfate) (PEDOT:Sulf)) to achieve electrically - modulated conductive polymer nano - optical antennas for the first time. These nano - antennas can not only switch rapidly between on/off states but also can gradually electrically modulate their nano - optical responses by gradually adjusting the redox state of the polymer. This ability is of great significance for the development of electrically - modulated metasurfaces with truly dynamic optical nano - antenna pixels, with potential applications ranging from tunable planar meta - optics to adaptive smart windows, etc. Specifically, the paper has solved the following key problems: 1. **Limitations of static nanostructures**: Due to the fixed material properties, traditional metal nanostructures cannot be dynamically adjusted after manufacturing, which limits their applications in the fields of dynamic nano - optics and metasurfaces. 2. **Dynamic regulation of conductive polymers**: By utilizing the redox tunability of conductive polymers, the electrical modulation of the optical properties of nano - antennas has been achieved, thus overcoming the static limitations of traditional metal nanostructures. 3. **Specific implementation of electrical modulation**: It has been demonstrated how to switch PEDOT:Sulf nanodisks between the highly conductive oxidized state and the low - conductive reduced state by electrochemical methods to achieve the on/off switching of nano - antennas and the progressive modulation of their optical responses. 4. **Combination of theory and experiment**: Through theoretical calculations and experimental verifications, the mechanism of the change in the optical properties of nano - antennas during the electrical modulation process has been explained, including the modulation of carrier density and mobility. Through the solutions to these problems, the paper provides new ideas and technical paths for the development of dynamic nano - optical devices and metasurfaces.
