Abstract:We study Anderson localization of a scalar wave in an ensemble of resonant point scatterers embedded in an anisotropic background medium. For uniaxial anisotropy of moderate strength, the mobility edges and the critical exponent of the localization transition are found to be unaffected by the anisotropy provided that the determinant of the anisotropy tensor is kept equal to one upon introducing the anisotropy. Localized modes have anisotropic spatial shapes although their anisotropy is weaker than the one expected from purely geometric considerations. The modes with the longest lifetimes are found to be the most anisotropic and their anisotropy increases with the size of the disordered medium.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore whether and how the Anderson localization phenomenon is affected by the anisotropy of the medium in anisotropic disordered media. Specifically, the authors focus on: 1. **Localization transition**: To study whether the localization transition (the transition from extended states to localized states) of scalar waves in anisotropic media is the same as that in isotropic media. This includes examining whether the position of the localization edges (mobility edges) and the critical exponent will change due to the anisotropy of the medium. 2. **Anisotropy of localized modes**: To analyze whether the spatial distribution of the localized modes exhibits anisotropy and how this anisotropy changes with the anisotropy of the medium and the lifetime of the modes. ### Main findings - **Localization edges and critical exponents**: Under moderate anisotropic conditions, the position of the localization edges and the critical exponent are consistent with the results in isotropic media, indicating that anisotropy has little effect on these macroscopic properties. - **Anisotropy of localized modes**: Although the spatial distribution of the localized modes does exhibit anisotropy, this anisotropy is weaker than expected from a geometric perspective. The longest lifetime of the modes corresponds to the strongest anisotropy, while the anisotropy of the most localized modes (measured by the inverse participation ratio IPR) is lower. - **Interaction between surface and bulk modes**: At low inverse participation ratio (IPR) values, there is a plateau in the anisotropy parameter of the localized modes, which may be related to the interaction between surface and bulk modes. ### Research methods - **Random Green's function matrix model**: Use the random Green's function matrix model to describe the multiple - scattering process of multiple resonant point scatterers in anisotropic media. - **Numerical simulation**: Calculate the localized modes for different numbers of scatterers through numerical simulation and analyze their anisotropy parameters. ### Conclusion This study reveals that in anisotropic disordered media, the basic characteristics of the Anderson localization phenomenon (such as localization edges and critical exponents) are similar to those in isotropic media, but the spatial structure of the localized modes exhibits a certain anisotropy. These findings are helpful for a better understanding of the influence of anisotropy on wave propagation and localization phenomena.
