Abstract:We support some evidence that a long additive MDS code over a finite field must be equivalent to a linear code. More precisely, let $C$ be an $\mathbb F_q$-linear $(n,q^{hk},n-k+1)_{q^h}$ MDS code over $\mathbb F_{q^h}$. If $k=3$, $h \in \{2,3\}$, $n > \max \{q^{h-1},h q -1\} + 3$, and $C$ has three coordinates from which its projections are equivalent to linear codes, we prove that $C$ itself is equivalent to a linear code. If $k>3$, $n > q+k$, and there are two disjoint subsets of coordinates whose combined size is at most $k-2$ from which the projections of $C$ are equivalent to linear codes, we prove that $C$ is equivalent to a code which is linear over a larger field than $\mathbb F_q$.

Abstract:Aydina and Halilović (Finite fields Appl. 45 (2017) 96-106) introduced multi-twisted codes and studied some of their basic properties. Let be a finite commutative -algebra. An -linear code over of length is an -submodule of . Recently, Mahmoudi et al. (Finite fields Appl. 64 (2020) 101665) studied -linear codes over -algebras. In this paper, we show that every -linear code is equivalent to a multi-twisted (MT) code. This gives us a new point of view in coding theory. In particular, we obtain a rich mathematical structure for linear codes.

Abstract:We call a linear code $C$ with length $n$ over a field $F$, a linear complementary equi-dual code, when there exists a linear code $D$ over $F$ such that $D$ is permutation equivalent to $C^\perp$ and $(C,D)$ is a linear complementary pair of codes, that is, $C+ D=F^n$ and $C\cap D=0$. We first state a necessary condition on a code $C$ to be linear complementary equi-dual. Then, we conjecture that this necessary condition is also sufficient and present several statements which support this conjecture.

Abstract:In 1964, Massey introduced a class of codes with complementary duals which are called linear complimentary dual (LCD) codes. He showed that LCD codes have applications in communication system, side-channel attack and so on. LCD codes have been extensively studied in literature. On the other hand, MDS codes form an optimal family of classical codes which have wide applications in both theory and practice. The main purpose of this paper is to give an explicit construction of several classes of LCD MDS codes, using tools from algebraic function fields. We exemplify this construction and obtain several classes of explicit LCD MDS codes for the odd characteristic case.

Abstract:In this article we mainly study linear codes over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ and their binary subfield codes. We construct linear codes over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ whose defining sets are the certain subsets of $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}^m$ obtained from mathematical objects called simplicial complexes. We use a result in LFSR sequences to illustrate the relation of the weights of codewords in two special codes obtained from simplical complexes and then determin the parameters of these codes. We construct fiveinfinite families of distance optimal codes and give sufficient conditions for these codes to be minimal.

Abstract:In this work, we study linear codes with the folded Hamming distance, or equivalently, codes with the classical Hamming distance that are linear over a subfield. This includes additive codes. We study MDS codes in this setting and define quasi MDS (QMDS) codes and dually QMDS codes, which attain a more relaxed variant of the classical Singleton bound. We provide several general results concerning these codes, including restriction, shortening, weight distributions, existence, density, geometric description and bounds on their lengths relative to their field sizes. We provide explicit examples and a binary construction with optimal lengths relative to their field sizes, which beats any MDS code.

Linear codes associated to symmetric determinantal varieties; General case

Abstract:The study of linear codes over a finite field of odd cardinality, derived from determinantal varieties obtained from symmetric matrices of bounded rank, was initiated in a recent paper by the authors. There, one found the minimum distance of the code obtained from evaluating homogeneous linear functions at all symmetric matrices with rank, which is, at most, a given even number. Furthermore, a conjecture for the minimum distance of codes from symmetric matrices with ranks bounded by an odd number was given. In this article, we continue the study of codes from symmetric matrices of bounded rank. A connection between the weights of the codewords of this code and Q-numbers of the association scheme of symmetric matrices is established. Consequently, we get a concrete formula for the weight distribution of these codes. Finally, we determine the minimum distance of the code obtained from evaluating homogeneous linear functions at all symmetric matrices with rank at most a given number, both when this number is odd and when it is even.

Abstract:Two families of complementary codes over finite fields $\mathbb{F}_q$ are studied, where $q=r^2$ is square: i) Hermitian complementary dual linear codes, and ii) trace Hermitian complementary dual subfield linear codes. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a linear code (resp., a subfield linear code) to be Hermitian complementary dual (resp., trace Hermitian complementary dual) are determined. Constructions of such codes are given together their parameters. Some illustrative examples are provided as well.

Abstract:We introduce new sufficient conditions for permutation and monomial equivalence of linear cyclic codes over various finite fields. We recall that monomial equivalence and isometric equivalence are the same relation for linear codes over finite fields. A necessary and sufficient condition for the monomial equivalence of linear cyclic codes through a shift map on their defining set is also given. Finally, we prove that if gcd⁡(3n,φ(3n))=1 , where φ is the Euler's totient function, then all permutation equivalent constacyclic codes of length n over F4 are given by the action of multipliers. The results of this work allow us to prune the search algorithm for new linear codes and discover record-breaking linear and quantum codes.

Abstract:This paper deals with linear codes invariant under an endomorphism that we call -codes. Since any endomorphism can be represented by a matrix when a basis is fixed, we shall, for simplicity, consider linear codes invariant under right multiplication by a square matrix , and we call them -codes. In particular, we distinguish three fundamental types: -cyclic codes, quasi -cyclic codes, and -multi-cyclic codes. The approach developed here allows us to realize cyclic codes and many of their generalizations as special cases. It also helps us better understand the structure of linear codes invariant under some special matrices, such as a permutation matrix or a monomial matrix. Next, we study the duality of -codes, where we show that the -dual of an -code is an -code, where represents the adjoint matrix of for a non-degenerate bilinear form , and we explore some important results on the duality of these codes. In order to use polynomial rings in the study of -codes, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between -codes and -submodules of where and is the sequence of invariant factors of . Finally, we investigate the structure of 1-generator -codes and provide BCH-like and Hartmann-Tzeng-like bounds for them. We construct optimal linear and new quantum codes by applying the method developed in this article.

Linear Codes Associated to Symmetric Determinantal Varieties: Even Rank Case

Abstract:We consider linear codes over a finite field of odd characteristic, derived from determinantal varieties, obtained from symmetric matrices of bounded ranks. A formula for the weight of a code word is derived. Using this formula, we have computed the minimum distance for the codes corresponding to matrices upper-bounded by any fixed, even rank. A conjecture is proposed for the cases where the upper bound is odd. At the end of the article, tables for the weights of these codes, for spaces of symmetric matrices up to order $5$, are given. We also correct typographical errors in Proposition 1.1/3.1 of [3], and in the last table, and we have rewritten Corollary 4.9 of that paper, and the usage of that Corollary in the proof of Proposition 4.10.

Abstract:An algorithm for equivalence of linear codes over finite fields is presented. Its main advantage is that it can extract exactly one representative from each equivalence class among a large number of linear codes. It can also be used as a test for isomorphism of binary matrices. The algorithm is implemented in the program LCequivalence, which is designed to obtain the inequivalent codes in a set of linear codes over a finite field with q<64 elements. This program is a module of the free software package QextNewEdition for constructing, classifying and studying linear codes.

Abstract:Linear codes are widely studied in coding theory as they have nice applications in distributed storage, combinatorics, lattices, cryptography and so on. Constructing linear codes with desirable properties is an interesting research topic. In this paper, based on the augmentation technique, we present two families of linear codes from some functions over finite fields. The first family of linear codes is constructed from monomial functions over finite fields. The locality of them is determined and the weight distributions of two subfamilies of the codes are also given. An infinite family of locally recoverable codes which are at least almost optimal and some optimal recoverable codes are obtained from the linear codes. In particular, the two subfamilies of the codes are proved to be both optimally or almost optimally extendable and self-orthogonal. The second family of linear codes is constructed from weakly regular bent functions over finite fields and their weight distribution is determined. This family of codes is proved to have locality 3 for some cases and is conjectured to have locality 2 for other cases. Particularly, two families of optimal locally recoverable codes are derived from the linear codes. Besides, this family of codes is also proved to be both optimally or almost optimally extendable and self-orthogonal.

Abstract:Let SLAut(𝔽_q^n) denote the group of all semilinear isometries on 𝔽_q^n , where q=p^e is a prime power. In this paper, we investigate some general properties of linear codes associated with the σ duals for σ∈SLAut(𝔽_q^n) . We show that the dimension of the intersection of two linear codes can be determined by generator matrices of such codes and their σ duals. We also show that the dimension of the σ hull of a linear code can be determined by a generator matrix of it or its σ dual. We give a characterization on the σ dual and σ hull of a matrix-product code. We give an explanation for why it is meaningful to extend the ℓ -Galois hulls of matrix-product codes to the σ hulls of matrix-product codes. We also investigate the intersection of a pair of matrix-product codes. Finally, we construct several families of σ dual-containing matrix-product codes, some of which are optimal or almost optimal according to the Database (Grassl 2023 ).

Random Reed-Solomon Codes and Random Linear Codes are Locally Equivalent

Abstract:We establish an equivalence between two important random ensembles of linear codes: random linear codes (RLCs) and random Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. Specifically, we show that these models exhibit identical behavior with respect to key combinatorial properties, such as list-decodability and list-recoverability, when the alphabet size is sufficiently large. We introduce monotone-decreasing local coordinate-wise linear (LCL) properties, a new class of properties designed for studying the large alphabet regime. This class encompasses list-decodability, list-recoverability, and their average-weight variants. We develop a framework to analyze these properties and prove a threshold theorem for RLCs. Specifically, we identify a threshold rate $ R_P $ for any LCL property $P$, where RLCs are likely to satisfy $P$ when $ R < R_P $ and unlikely to do so when $ R > R_P $. We extend this threshold theorem to random RS codes and prove that they share the same threshold $ R_P $, thereby establishing the equivalence between the two ensembles and enabling unified analysis of list-recoverability and related properties. Applying our framework, we compute the threshold rate for list-decodability, proving that both random RS codes and RLCs achieve the generalized Singleton bound. This recovers recent results of Alrabiah, Guruswami, and Li (2023) via elementary methods. Additionally, we provide an upper bound on the list-recoverability threshold and conjecture that this bound is tight. Our approach suggests a plausible pathway for proving this conjecture and thus pinpointing the list-recoverability parameters of both models.

Abstract:MDS codes have diverse practical applications in communication systems, data storage, and quantum codes due to their algebraic properties and optimal error-correcting capability. In this paper, we focus on a class of linear codes and establish some sufficient and necessary conditions for them being MDS. Notably, these codes differ from Reed-Solomon codes up to monomial equivalence. Additionally, we also explore the cases in which these codes are almost MDS or near MDS. Applying our main results, we determine the covering radii and deep holes of the dual codes associated with specific Roth-Lempel codes and discover an infinite family of (almost) optimally extendable codes with dimension three.

Abstract: In this paper, we present a construction of linear codes over $\f_{2^t}$ from Boolean functions, which is a generalization of Ding's method \cite[Theorem 9]{Ding15}. Based on this construction, we give two classes of linear codes $\tilde{\C}_{f}$ and $\C_f$ (see Theorem \ref{thm-maincode1} and Theorem \ref{thm-maincodenew}) over $\f_{2^t}$ from a Boolean function $f:\f_{q}\rightarrow \f_2$, where $q=2^n$ and $\f_{2^t}$ is some subfield of $\f_{q}$. The complete weight enumerator of $\tilde{\C}_{f}$ can be easily determined from the Walsh spectrum of $f$, while the weight distribution of the code $\C_f$ can also be easily settled. Particularly, the number of nonzero weights of $\tilde{\C}_{f}$ and $\C_f$ is the same as the number of distinct Walsh values of $f$. As applications of this construction, we show several series of linear codes over $\f_{2^t}$ with two or three weights by using bent, semibent, monomial and quadratic Boolean function $f$.
