Abstract:It is a classical result that the category of finitely-generated free monoids serves as a PROP for commutative bialgebras. Attaching permutations to fix the order of multiplication, we construct an extension of this category that is equivalent to the PROP for bialgebras.

Abstract:A PROP is a symmetric monoidal category whose objects are the nonnegative integers and whose tensor product on objects is addition. A morphism from $m$ to $n$ in a PROP can be visualized as a string diagram with $m$ input wires and $n$ output wires. For a field $k$, the PROP $\mathrm{FinVect}_k$ where morphisms are $k$-linear maps is used by Baez and Erbele to study signal-flow diagrams. We aim to generalize their result characterizing this PROP in terms of generators and relations by looking at the PROP $\mathrm{Mat}(R)$ of matrices of values in $R$, where $R$ is a commutative rig (that is, a generalization of a ring where the condition that each element has an additive inverse is relaxed). To this end, we show that the category of symmetric monoidal functors out of $\mathrm{Mat}(R)$ is equivalent to the category of bicommutative bimonoids equipped with a certain map of rigs; such functors are called algebras. By choosing $R$ correctly, we will see that the algebras of the PROP $\mathrm{FinSpan}$ of finite sets and spans between them are bicommutative bimonoids, while the algebras of the PROP $\mathrm{FinRel}$ of finite sets and relations between them are special bicommuative bimonoids and the algebras of $\mathrm{Mat}(\mathbb Z)$ are bicommutative Hopf monoids.

Abstract:We prove that the Leibniz PROP is isomorphic (as $\Bbbk$-linear categories) to the symmetric crossed presimplicial algebra $\Bbbk[(\Delta^+)^{op} \mathbb{S}]$ where $\Delta^+$ is the skeletal category of finite well-ordered sets with surjections, but the distributive law between $(\Delta^+)^{op}$ and the symmetric groups $\mathbb{S} = \bigsqcup_{n\geq 1} S_n$ is not the standard one.

Abstract:Motivated by its link with functor homology, we study the prop freely generated by the operadic suspension of the operad Com. We exhibit a particular family of generators, for which the composition and the symmetric group actions admit simple descriptions. We highlight associated subcategories of its Karoubi envelope which allows us to compute extensions groups between simple functors from free groups. We construct a particular prop structure on partitions whose composition corresponds to the Yoneda product of extensions between exterior power functors.

Abstract:We prove that a weak equivalence between cofibrant props induces a weak equivalence between the associated classifying spaces of algebras. This statement generalizes to the prop setting a homotopy invariance result which is well known in the case of algebras over operads. The absence of model category structure on algebras over a prop leads us to introduce new methods to overcome this difficulty. We also explain how our result can be extended to algebras over colored props in any symmetric monoidal model category tensored over chain complexes.

Abstract:The category of (colored) props is an enhancement of the category of colored operads, and thus of the category of small categories. In this paper, the second in a series on "higher props," we show that the category of all small colored simplicial props admits a cofibrantly generated model category structure. With this model structure, the forgetful functor from props to operads is a right Quillen functor.

Abstract:A Com-PreLie bialgebra is a commutative bialgebra with an extra preLie product satisfying some compatibilities with the product and the coproduct. We here give examples of cofree Com-PreLie bialgebras, including all the ones such that the preLie product is homogeneous of degree $\ge$ --1. We also give a graphical description of free unitary Com-PreLie algebras, explicit their canonical bialgebra structure and exhibit with the help of a rigidity theorem certain cofree quotients, including the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees. We finally prove that the dual of these bialgebras are also enveloping algebras of preLie algebras, combinatorially described.

On the Passi and the Mal'cev functors

Abstract:The author has shown that the category of analytic contravariant functors on $\mathbf{gr}$, the category of finitely-generated free groups, is equivalent to the category of left modules over the PROP associated to the Lie operad, working over $\mathbb{Q}$. This exploited properties of the polynomial filtration of the category of contravariant functors on $\mathbf{gr}$. The first purpose of this paper is to strengthen the corresponding result for covariant functors on $\mathbf{gr}$. This involves introducing the appropriate analogue of the category of analytic contravariant functors, namely a certain category of towers of polynomial functors on $\mathbf{gr}$. This category is abelian and has a natural symmetric monoidal structure induced by the usual tensor product of functors. Moreover, the projective generators of this category are described in terms of the Mal'cev functors that are introduced here. It follows that this category is equivalent to the category of right modules over the PROP associated to the Lie operad. As a fundamental example, the Passi functors arising from the group ring functors are described explicitly. The theory is applied to consider bifunctors on $\mathbf{gr}$. This allows the $\mathbb{Q}$-linearization of the category of free groups to be described, up to polynomial filtration. As a stronger application of the theory, this is generalized to the Casimir PROP associated to the Lie operad, as studied by Hinich and Vaintrob. Up to polynomial filtration, this recovers the category $\mathbf{A}$ introduced by Habiro and Massuyeau in their study of bottom tangles in handlebodies.

Abstract:The tensor product of props was defined by Hackney and Robertson as an extension of the Boardman-Vogt product of operads to more general monoidal theories. Theories that factor as tensor products include the theory of commutative monoids and the theory of bialgebras. We give a topological interpretation (and vast generalisation) of this construction as a low-dimensional projection of a "smash product of pointed directed spaces". Here directed spaces are embodied by combinatorial structures called diagrammatic sets, while Gray products replace cartesian products. The correspondence is mediated by a web of adjunctions relating diagrammatic sets, pros, probs, props, and Gray-categories. The smash product applies to presentations of higher-dimensional theories and systematically produces higher-dimensional coherence cells.

A combinatorial approach to categorical Möbius inversion and pseudoinversion

Abstract:We use Cramer's formula for the inverse of a matrix and a combinatorial expression for the determinant in terms of paths of an associated digraph (which can be traced back to Coates) to give a combinatorial interpretation of Möbius inversion whenever it exists. Every Möbius coefficient is a quotient of two sums, each indexed by certain collections of paths in the digraph. Our result contains, as particular cases, previous theorems by Hall (for posets) and Leinster (for skeletal categories whose idempotents are identities). A byproduct is a novel expression for the magnitude of a metric space as sum over self-avoiding paths with finitely many terms. By means of Berg's formula, our main constructions can be extended to Moore-Penrose pseudoinverses, yielding an analogous combinatorial interpretation of Möbius pseudoinversion and, consequently, of the magnitude of an arbitrary finite category.

On a general notion of a polynomial identity and codimensions

Abstract:Using the braided version of Lawvere's algebraic theories and Mac Lane's PROPs, we introduce polynomial identities for arbitrary algebraic structures in a braided monoidal category C as well as their codimensions in the case when C is linear over some field. The new cases include coalgebras, bialgebras, Hopf algebras, braided vector spaces, Yetter-Drinfel'd modules, etc. We find bases for polynomial identities and calculate codimensions in some important particular cases.

Abstract:To a submodular function we define a class of preorders, conforming preorders. A submodular function $z$ corresponds to a generalized permutahedron $\Pi(z)$. We show the faces of $\Pi(z)$ are in bijection with the conforming preorders. The face poset structure of $\Pi(z)$ induces two order relations $\lhd$ and $\blacktriangleleft$ on conforming preorder, and we investigate their properties. Ardila and Aguiar introduced a Hopf monoid of submodular functions/generalized permutahedra. We show there is a cointeracting bimonoid of modular functions. By recent theory of L.Foissy this associates a canonical polynomial to any submodular function.

Abstract:Let $ V$ be a braided tensor category and $ C$ a tensor category equipped with a braided tensor functor $G:V\to Z(C)$. For any exact indecomposable $C$-module category $M$, we explicitly construct a right adjoint of the action functor $\rho:Z^V(C)\to C^*_{M}$ afforded by $M$. Here $Z^V(C)$ is the Müger's centralizer of the subcategory $G(V)$ inside the center $Z^V(C)$, also known as the relative center. The construction is parallel to the one presented by K. Shimizu, but using instead the relative coend end. This adjunction turns out to be monadic, thus inducing Hopf monads $T_{V}: C\to C$, such that there is a monoidal equivalence of categories $ C_{T_{V}}\simeq Z^V(C).$ If $\bar{\rho}: C^*_{ M}\to Z^V(C)$ is the right adjoint of $\rho,$ then $\bar{\rho}(Id_{M})$ is the braided commutative algebra constructed in [R. Laugwitz and C. Walton. Braided commutative algebras over quantized enveloping algebras, Transform. Groups 26(3) (2021), 957--993]. As a consequence of our construction of these algebras, in terms of the right adjoint to $\rho$, we can provide a recipe to compute them when $C=Rep(H\# T)$ is the category of finite-dimensional representations of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $H\# T$ obtained by bosonization, and choosing an arbitrary $Rep(H\# T)$-module category $M$. We show an explicit example in the case of Taft algebras.

Central extensions of preordered groups

Abstract:We prove that the category of preordered groups contains two full reflective subcategories that give rise to some interesting Galois theories. The first one is the category of the so-called commutative objects, which are precisely the preordered groups whose group law is commutative. The second one is the category of abelian objects, that turns out to be the category of monomorphisms in the category of abelian groups. We give a precise description of the reflector to this subcategory, and we prove that it induces an admissible Galois structure and then a natural notion of categorical central extension. We then characterize the central extensions of preordered groups in purely algebraic terms: these are shown to be the central extensions of groups having the additional property that their restriction to the positive cones is a special homogeneous surjection of monoids.

Abstract:The Hecke algebras for all symmetric groups taken together form a braided monoidal category that controls all quantum link invariants of type A and, by extension, the standard canon of topological quantum field theories in dimension 3 and 4. Here we provide the first categorification of this Hecke braided monoidal category, which takes the form of an $\mathbb{E}_2$-monoidal $(\infty,2)$-category whose hom-$(\infty,1)$-categories are $k$-linear, stable, idempotent-complete, and equipped with $\mathbb{Z}$-actions. This categorification is designed to control homotopy-coherent link homology theories and to-be-constructed topological quantum field theories in dimension 4 and 5.

Abstract:We study module like objects over categorical quotients of algebras by the action of coalgebras with several objects. These take the form of ``entwined comodules'' and ``entwined contramodules'' over a triple $(\mathscr C,A,\psi)$, where $A$ is an algebra, $\mathscr C$ is a coalgebra with several objects and $\psi$ is a collection of maps that ``entwines'' $\mathscr C$ with $A$. Our objective is to prove Frobenius, separability and Maschke type theorems for functors between categories of entwined comodules and entwined contramodules.

Abstract:Firm Frobenius algebras are firm algebras and counital coalgebras such that the comultiplication is a bimodule map. They are investigated by categorical methods based on a study of adjunctions and lifted functors. Their categories of comodules and of firm modules are shown to be isomorphic if and only if a canonical comparison functor from the category of comodules to the category of non-unital modules factorizes through the category of firm modules. This happens for example if the underlying algebra possesses local units, e.g. the firm Frobenius algebra arises from a co-Frobenius coalgebra over a base field; or if the comultiplication splits the multiplication (hence the underlying coalgebra is coseparable).

Abstract:We introduce the categories of infinitesimal Hopf modules and bimodules over an infinitesimal bialgebra. We show that they correspond to modules and bimodules over the infinitesimal version of the double. We show that there is a natural, but non-obvious way to construct a pre-Lie algebra from an arbitrary infinitesimal bialgebra and a dendriform algebra from a quasitriangular infinitesimal bialgebra. As consequences, we obtain a pre-Lie structure on the space of paths on an arbitrary quiver, and a striking dendriform structure on the space of endomorphisms of an arbitrary infinitesimal bialgebra, which combines the convolution and composition products. We extend the previous constructions to the categories of Hopf, pre-Lie and dendriform bimodules. We construct a brace algebra structure from an arbitrary infinitesimal bialgebra; this refines the pre-Lie algebra construction. In two appendices, we show that infinitesimal bialgebras are comonoid objects in a certain monoidal category and discuss a related construction for counital infinitesimal bialgebras.

Abstract:Given a symmetric monoidal category $C$ with product $\sqcup$, where the neutral element for the product is an initial object, we consider the poset of $\sqcup$-complemented subobjects of a given object $X$. When this poset has finite height, we define decompositions and partial decompositions of $X$ which are coherent with $\sqcup$, and order them by refinement. From these posets, we define complexes of frames and partial bases, augmented Bergman complexes and related ordered versions. We propose a unified approach to the study of their combinatorics and homotopy type, establishing various properties and relations between them. Via explicit homotopy formulas, we will be able to transfer structural properties, such as Cohen-Macaulayness.
