Abstract:This paper presents a new method to solve a dynamic sensor fusion problem. We consider a large number of remote sensors which measure a common Gauss-Markov process and encoders that transmit the measurements to a data fusion center through the resource restricted communication network. The proposed approach heuristically minimizes a weighted sum of communication costs subject to a constraint on the state estimation error at the fusion center. The communication costs are quantified as the expected bitrates from the sensors to the fusion center. We show that the problem as formulated is a difference-of-convex program and apply the convex-concave procedure (CCP) to obtain a heuristic solution. We consider a 1D heat transfer model and 2D target tracking by a drone swarm model for numerical studies. Through these simulations, we observe that our proposed approach has a tendency to assign zero data rate to unnecessary sensors indicating that our approach is sparsity promoting, and an effective sensor selection heuristic.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the optimal allocation of data transmission rates for dynamic sensor fusion in resource - constrained communication networks. Specifically, the researchers considered the situation where multiple remote sensors measure a common Gaussian - Markov process. Each sensor encodes its measured value and transmits it to the data fusion center through a resource - constrained communication network. In this process, the communication cost of a given sensor is quantified as the expected bit rate from this sensor to the fusion center. The paper proposes a method aimed at minimizing the weighted sum of these communication costs while satisfying the constraint conditions of the state - estimation error in the fusion center. The main contributions of the paper include: - Proposing a formulation method for the sensor - rate - allocation problem. By using the entropy - coding dither - predicted quantization technique, it is shown that the expected bit rate required for quantized linear measurements with a specified reconstruction error can be approximated as a specific information metric. - Proposing an objective function that minimizes the weighted average of these bit rates under the constraint conditions of the state - estimation - error covariance of the linear minimum - mean - square - error estimator, which leads to a non - convex optimization problem. - Transforming the non - convex optimization problem into a difference - of - convex program and obtaining a heuristic solution through the convex - concave process (CCP). - Through numerical experiments, applying the proposed method to a one - dimensional heat - transfer system and a two - dimensional unmanned - aerial - vehicle - swarm target - tracking model. It is observed that as the performance constraints of the estimator are relaxed, the algorithm tends to allocate zero data rates to more unnecessary sensors, indicating that the proposed method has a sparsity - promoting effect and can be used as an effective sensor - selection heuristic method. In summary, this paper mainly solves how to efficiently allocate the data - transmission rates of sensors in resource - constrained communication networks to achieve effective dynamic sensor fusion while maintaining control over state - estimation errors.
