Abstract:Designing and implementing typed programming languages is hard. Every new type system feature requires extending the metatheory and implementation, which are often complicated and fragile. To ease this process, we would like to provide general mechanisms that subsume many different features. In modern type systems, parametric polymorphism is fundamental, but intersection polymorphism has gained little traction in programming languages. Most practical intersection type systems have supported only refinement intersections, which increase the expressiveness of types (more precise properties can be checked) without altering the expressiveness of terms; refinement intersections can simply be erased during compilation. In contrast, unrestricted intersections increase the expressiveness of terms, and can be used to encode diverse language features, promising an economy of both theory and implementation. We describe a foundation for compiling unrestricted intersection and union types: an elaboration type system that generates ordinary lambda-calculus terms. The key feature is a Forsythe-like merge construct. With this construct, not all reductions of the source program preserve types; however, we prove that ordinary call-by-value evaluation of the elaborated program corresponds to a type-preserving evaluation of the source program. We also describe a prototype implementation and applications of unrestricted intersections and unions: records, operator overloading, and simulating dynamic typing.

Abstract:In the Calculus of Dependent Lambda Eliminations (CDLE), a pure Curry-style type theory, it is possible to generically {\lambda}-encode inductive datatypes which support course-of-values (CoV) induction. We present a datatype subsystem for Cedille (an implementation of CDLE) that provides this feature to programmers through convenient notation for declaring datatypes and for defining functions over them by case analysis and fixpoint-style recursion guarded by a type-based termination checker. We demonstrate that this does not require extending CDLE by showing how datatypes and functions over them elaborate to {\lambda}-encodings, and proving that this elaboration is type- and value-preserving. This datatype subsystem and elaborator are implemented in Cedille, establishing for the first time a complete translation of inductive definitions to a small pure typed {\lambda}-calculus.

Abstract:We present {\lambda}ert, a type theory supporting refinement types with explicit proofs. Instead of solving refinement constraints with an SMT solver like DML and Liquid Haskell, our system requires and permits programmers to embed proofs of properties within the program text, letting us support a rich logic of properties including quantifiers and induction. We show that the type system is sound by showing that every refined program erases to a simply-typed program, and by means of a denotational semantics, we show that every erased program has all of the properties demanded by its refined type. All of our proofs are formalised in Lean 4.

A Complete V-Equational System for Graded lambda-Calculus

Abstract:Modern programming frequently requires generalised notions of program equivalence based on a metric or a similar structure. Previous work addressed this challenge by introducing the notion of a V-equation, i.e. an equation labelled by an element of a quantale V, which covers inter alia (ultra-)metric, classical, and fuzzy (in)equations. It also introduced a V-equational system for the linear variant of lambda-calculus where any given resource must be used exactly once. In this paper we drop the (often too strict) linearity constraint by adding graded modal types which allow multiple uses of a resource in a controlled manner. We show that such a control, whilst providing more expressivity to the programmer, also interacts more richly with V-equations than the linear or Cartesian cases. Our main result is the introduction of a sound and complete V-equational system for a lambda-calculus with graded modal types interpreted by what we call a Lipschitz exponential comonad. We also show how to build such comonads canonically via a universal construction, and use our results to derive graded metric equational systems (and corresponding models) for programs with timed and probabilistic behaviour.

A Practical Formalization of Monadic Equational Reasoning in Dependent-type Theory

Abstract:One can perform equational reasoning about computational effects with a purely functional programming language thanks to monads. Even though equational reasoning for effectful programs is desirable, it is not yet mainstream. This is partly because it is difficult to maintain pencil-and-paper proofs of large examples. We propose a formalization of a hierarchy of effects using monads in the Coq proof assistant that makes monadic equational reasoning practical. Our main idea is to formalize the hierarchy of effects and algebraic laws as interfaces like it is done when formalizing hierarchy of algebras in dependent type theory. Thanks to this approach, we clearly separate equational laws from models. We can then take advantage of the sophisticated rewriting capabilities of Coq and build libraries of lemmas to achieve concise proofs of programs. We can also use the resulting framework to leverage on Coq's mathematical theories and formalize models of monads. In this article, we explain how we formalize a rich hierarchy of effects (nondeterminism, state, probability, etc.), how we mechanize examples of monadic equational reasoning from the literature, and how we apply our framework to the design of equational laws for a subset of ML with references.

Abstract:Linear logic provides a framework to control the complexity of higher-order functional programs. We present an extension of this framework to programs with multithreading and side effects focusing on the case of elementary time. Our main contributions are as follows. First, we provide a new combinatorial proof of termination in elementary time for the functional case. Second, we develop an extension of the approach to a call-by-value $lambda$-calculus with multithreading and side effects. Third, we introduce an elementary affine type system that guarantees the standard subject reduction and progress properties. Finally, we illustrate the programming of iterative functions with side effects in the presented formalism.

Abstract:We review the close relationship between abstract machines for (call-by-name or call-by-value) lambda-calculi (extended with Felleisen's C) and sequent calculus, reintroducing on the way Curien-Herbelin's syntactic kit expressing the duality of computation. We use this kit to provide a term language for a presentation of LK (with conjunction, disjunction, and negation), and to transcribe cut elimination as (non confluent) rewriting. A key slogan here, which may appear here in print for the first time, is that commutative cut elimination rules are explicit substitution propagation rules. We then describe the focalised proof search discipline (in the classical setting), and narrow down the language and the rewriting rules to a confluent calculus (a variant of the second author's focalising system L). We then define a game of patterns and counterpatterns, leading us to a fully focalised finitary syntax for a synthetic presentation of classical logic, that provides a quotient on (focalised) proofs, abstracting out the order of decomposition of negative connectives.

A Calculus for Scoped Effects & Handlers

Abstract:Algebraic effects & handlers have become a standard approach for side-effects in functional programming. Their modular composition with other effects and clean separation of syntax and semantics make them attractive to a wide audience. However, not all effects can be classified as algebraic; some need a more sophisticated handling. In particular, effects that have or create a delimited scope need special care, as their continuation consists of two parts-in and out of the scope-and their modular composition introduces additional complexity. These effects are called scoped and have gained attention by their growing applicability and adoption in popular libraries. While calculi have been designed with algebraic effects & handlers built in to facilitate their use, a calculus that supports scoped effects & handlers in a similar manner does not yet exist. This work fills this gap: we present $\lambda_{\mathit{sc}}$, a calculus with native support for both algebraic and scoped effects & handlers. It addresses the need for polymorphic handlers and explicit clauses for forwarding unknown scoped operations to other handlers. Our calculus is based on Eff, an existing calculus for algebraic effects, extended with Koka-style row polymorphism, and consists of a formal grammar, operational semantics, a (type-safe) type-and-effect system and type inference. We demonstrate $\lambda_{\mathit{sc}}$ on a range of examples.

A Formal System for the Universal Quantification of Schematic Variables

Abstract:We advocate the use of de Bruijn's universal abstraction $\lambda^\infty$ for the quantification of schematic variables in the predicative setting and we present a typed $\lambda$-calculus featuring the quantifier $\lambda^\infty$ accompanied by other practically useful constructions like explicit substitutions and expected type annotations. The calculus stands just on two notions, i.e., bound rt-reduction and parametric validity, and has the expressive power of $\lambda\rightarrow$. Thus, while not aiming at being a logical framework by itself, it does enjoy many desired invariants of logical frameworks including confluence of reduction, strong normalization, preservation of type by reduction, decidability, correctness of types and uniqueness of types up to conversion. This calculus belongs to the $\lambda\delta$ family of formal systems, which borrow some features from the pure type systems and some from the languages of the Automath tradition, but stand outside both families. In particular, the calculus includes and evolves two earlier systems of this family. Moreover, a machine-checked specification of its theory is available.

Abstract:The development of programming languages can be quite complicated and costly. Hence, much effort has been devoted to the modular definition of language features that can be reused in various combinations to define new languages and experiment with their semantics. A notable outcome of these efforts is the algebra-based "datatypes a la carte" (DTC) approach. When combined with algebraic effects, DTC can model a wide range of common language features. Unfortunately, the current state of the art does not cover modular definitions of advanced control-flow mechanisms that defer execution to an appropriate point, such as call-by-name and call-by-need evaluation, as well as (multi-)staging. This paper defines latent effects, a generic class of such control-flow mechanisms. We demonstrate how function abstractions, lazy computations and a MetaML-like staging can all be expressed in a modular fashion using latent effects, and how they can be combined in various ways to obtain complex semantics. We provide a full Haskell implementation of our effects and handlers with a range of examples.
A Faithful and Quantitative Notion of Distant Reduction for the Lambda-Calculus with Generalized Applications

Abstract:We introduce a call-by-name lambda-calculus $\lambda Jn$ with generalized applications which is equipped with distant reduction. This allows to unblock $\beta$-redexes without resorting to the standard permutative conversions of generalized applications used in the original $\Lambda J$-calculus with generalized applications of Joachimski and Matthes. We show strong normalization of simply-typed terms, and we then fully characterize strong normalization by means of a quantitative (i.e. non-idempotent intersection) typing system. This characterization uses a non-trivial inductive definition of strong normalization --related to others in the literature--, which is based on a weak-head normalizing strategy. We also show that our calculus $\lambda Jn$ relates to explicit substitution calculi by means of a faithful translation, in the sense that it preserves strong normalization. Moreover, our calculus $\lambda Jn$ and the original $\Lambda J$-calculus determine equivalent notions of strong normalization. As a consequence, $\lambda J$ inherits a faithful translation into explicit substitutions, and its strong normalization can also be characterized by the quantitative typing system designed for $\lambda Jn$, despite the fact that quantitative subject reduction fails for permutative conversions.

Abstract:This work introduces the novel concept of kind refinement, which we develop in the context of an explicitly polymorphic ML-like language with type-level computation. Just as type refinements embed rich specifications by means of comprehension principles expressed by predicates over values in the type domain, kind refinements provide rich kind specifications by means of predicates over types in the kind domain. By leveraging our powerful refinement kind discipline, types in our language are not just used to statically classify program expressions and values, but also conveniently manipulated as tree-like data structures, with their kinds refined by logical constraints on such structures. Remarkably, the resulting typing and kinding disciplines allow for powerful forms of type reflection, ad-hoc polymorphism and type meta-programming, which are often found in modern software development, but not typically expressible in a type-safe manner in general purpose languages. We validate our approach both formally and pragmatically by establishing the standard meta-theoretical results of type safety and via a prototype implementation of a kind checker, type checker and interpreter for our language.

Finitary Simulation of Infinitary $β$-Reduction via Taylor Expansion, and Applications

Abstract:Originating in Girard's Linear logic, Ehrhard and Regnier's Taylor expansion of $\lambda$-terms has been broadly used as a tool to approximate the terms of several variants of the $\lambda$-calculus. Many results arise from a Commutation theorem relating the normal form of the Taylor expansion of a term to its Böhm tree. This led us to consider extending this formalism to the infinitary $\lambda$-calculus, since the $\Lambda_{\infty}^{001}$ version of this calculus has Böhm trees as normal forms and seems to be the ideal framework to reformulate the Commutation theorem. We give a (co-)inductive presentation of $\Lambda_{\infty}^{001}$. We define a Taylor expansion on this calculus, and state that the infinitary $\beta$-reduction can be simulated through this Taylor expansion. The target language is the usual resource calculus, and in particular the resource reduction remains finite, confluent and terminating. Finally, we state the generalised Commutation theorem and use our results to provide simple proofs of some normalisation and confluence properties in the infinitary $\lambda$-calculus.

Abstract:We refine a model for linear logic based on two well-known ingredients: games and simulations. We have already shown that usual simulation relations form a sound notion of morphism between games; and that we can interpret all linear logic in this way. One particularly interesting point is that we interpret multiplicative connectives by synchronous operations on games. We refine this work by giving computational contents to our simulation relations. To achieve that, we need to restrict to intuitionistic linear logic. This allows to work in a constructive setting, thus keeping a computational content to the proofs. We then extend it by showing how to interpret some of the additional structure of the exponentials. To be more precise, we first give a denotational model for the typed lambda-calculus; and then give a denotational model for the differential lambda-calculus of Ehrhard and Regnier. Both this models are proved correct constructively.

Towards a Direct, By-Need Evaluator for Dependently Typed Languages

Abstract:We present a C-language implementation of the lambda-pi calculus by extending the (call-by-need) stack machine of Ariola, Chang and Felleisen to hold types, using a typeless- tagless- final interpreter strategy. It has the advantage of expressing all operations as folds over terms, including by-need evaluation, recovery of the initial syntax-tree encoding for any term, and eliminating most garbage-collection tasks. These are made possible by a disciplined approach to handling the spine of each term, along with a robust stack-based API. Type inference is not covered in this work, but also derives several advantages from the present stack transformation. Timing and maximum stack space usage results for executing benchmark problems are presented. We discuss how the design choices for this interpreter allow the language to be used as a high-level scripting language for automatic distributed parallel execution of common scientific computing workflows.

The Delta-calculus: syntax and types

Abstract:We present the Delta-calculus, an explicitly typed lambda-calculus with strong pairs, projections and explicit type coercions. The calculus can be parametrized with different intersection type theories T, e.g. the Coppo-Dezani, the Coppo-Dezani-Salle', the Coppo-Dezani-Venneri and the Barendregt-Coppo-Dezani ones, producing a family of Delta-calculi with related intersection type systems. We prove the main properties like Church-Rosser, unicity of type, subject reduction, strong normalization, decidability of type checking and type reconstruction. We state the relationship between the intersection type assignment systems a` la Curry and the corresponding intersection type systems a` la Church by means of an essence function translating an explicitly typed Delta-term into a pure lambda-term one. We finally translate a Delta-term with type coercions into an equivalent one without them; the translation is proved to be coherent because its essence is the identity. The generic Delta-calculus can be parametrized to take into account other intersection type theories as the ones in the Barendregt et al. book.

An extended type system with lambda-typed lambda-expressions (extended version)

Abstract:We present the type system $\mathtt{d}$, an extended type system with lambda-typed lambda-expressions. It is related to type systems originating from the Automath project. $\mathtt{d}$ extends existing lambda-typed systems by an existential abstraction operator as well as propositional operators. $\beta$-reduction is extended to also normalize negated expressions using a subset of the laws of classical negation, hence $\mathtt{d}$ is normalizing both proofs and formulas which are handled uniformly as functional expressions. $\mathtt{d}$ is using a reflexive typing axiom for a constant $\tau$ to which no function can be typed. Some properties are shown including confluence, subject reduction, uniqueness of types, strong normalization, and consistency. We illustrate how, when using $\mathtt{d}$, due to its limited logical strength additional axioms must be added both for negation and for the mathematical structures whose deductions are to be formalized. Several appendices deal with extensions and variations of the proposed system.

Focusing on Refinement Typing

Abstract:We present a logically principled foundation for systematizing, in a way that works with any computational effect and evaluation order, SMT constraint generation seen in refinement type systems for functional programming languages. By carefully combining a focalized variant of call-by-push-value, bidirectional typing, and our novel technique of value-determined indexes, our system generates solvable SMT constraints without existential (unification) variables. We design a polarized subtyping relation allowing us to prove our logically focused typing algorithm is sound, complete, and decidable. We prove type soundness of our declarative system with respect to an elementary domain-theoretic denotational semantics. Type soundness implies, relatively simply, the total correctness and logical consistency of our system. The relative ease with which we obtain both algorithmic and semantic results ultimately stems from the proof-theoretic technique of focalization.
