Abstract:We study the paths in the Farey graph going from (1,0) to (0,1) , or the finite subtrees of the Stern-Brocot tree . We show they form an operad and isolate the "coronas", which are especially spiked paths. We show that {(x,y), gcd(x,y)=1 , x+y < R } is a corona.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a new geometric approach to subtractive continued fraction algorithms in high dimensions. We adapt a version of Farey summation to the geometric techniques proposed by F. Klein in 1895. More specifically we introduce Farey polyhedra and their sails that generalise respectively Klein polyhedra and their sails, and show similar duality properties of the Farey sail integer invariants. The construction of Farey sails is based on the multidimensional generalisation of the Farey tessellation provided by a modification of the continued fraction algorithm introduced by R. W. J. Meester. We classify Farey polyhedra in the combinatorial terms of prismatic diagrams. Prismatic diagrams extend boat polygons introduced by S. Morier-Genoud and V. Ovsienko in the two-dimensional case. As one of the applications of the new theory we get a multidimensional version of Conway-Coxeter frieze patterns. We show that multidimensional frieze patterns satisfy generalised Ptolemy relations.

Abstract:Farey sequences of irreducible fractions between 0 and 1 can be related to graph constructions known as Farey graphs. These graphs were first introduced by Matula and Kornerup in 1979 and further studied by Colbourn in 1982 and they have many interesting properties: they are minimally 3-colorable, uniquely Hamiltonian, maximally outerplanar and perfect. In this paper we introduce a simple generation method for a Farey graph family, and we study analytically relevant topological properties: order, size, degree distribution and correlation, clustering, transitivity, diameter and average distance. We show that the graphs are a good model for networks associated with some complex systems.

Abstract:We introduce a family of 3-variable "Farey polynomials" that are closely connected with the geometry and topology of $3$-manifolds and orbifolds as they can be used to produce concrete realisations of the boundaries and local coordinates for one-complex-dimensional deformation spaces of Kleinian groups. As such, this family of polynomials has a number of quite remarkable properties. We study these polynomials from an abstract combinatorial viewpoint, including a recursive definition extending that which is known in the literature for the special case of manifolds, even beyond what the geometry predicts. We also present some intriguing examples and conjectures which we would like to bring to the attention of researchers interested in algebraic combinatorics and hypergeometric functions. The results in this paper additionally provide a practical approach to various classification problems for rank-two subgroups of PSL(2,C) since they, together with other recent work of the authors, make it possible to provide certificates that certain groups are discrete and free, and effective ways to identify relators.

Abstract:The Farey sequence is a natural exhaustion of the set of rational numbers between 0 and 1 by finite lists. Ford Circles are a natural family of mutually tangent circles associated to Farey fractions: they are an important object of study in the geometry of numbers and hyperbolic geometry. We define two sequences of polygons associated to these objects, the Euclidean and hyperbolic Farey-Ford polygons. We study the asymptotic behavior of these polygons by exploring various geometric properties such as (but not limited to) areas, length and slopes of sides, and angles between sides.
A Farey tree structure on a family of pseudo-Anosovs

Abstract:We introduce a new perspective on a procedure for generating pseudo-Anosov homemorphisms from postcritically finite interval maps. The central idea is the realization of a tree structure on one such family of pseudo-Anosovs: individual systems, represented by the rational number measuring their rotation at infinity, are the vertices of the tree, while the edges encode dynamical relations between them. We also deepen the dictionary between one-, two- and three-dimensional invariants associated with these systems.

Abstract:For a graph G, let f_{ij} be the number of spanning rooted forests in which vertex j belongs to a tree rooted at i. In this paper, we show that for a path, the f_{ij}'s can be expressed as the products of Fibonacci numbers; for a cycle, they are products of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. The {\em doubly stochastic graph matrix} is the matrix F=(f_{ij})/f, where f is the total number of spanning rooted forests of G and n is the number of vertices in G. F provides a proximity measure for graph vertices. By the matrix forest theorem, F^{-1}=I+L, where L is the Laplacian matrix of G. We show that for the paths and the so-called T-caterpillars, some diagonal entries of F (which provides a measure of the self-connectivity of vertices) converge to \phi^{-1} or to 1-\phi^{-1}, where \phi is the golden ratio, as the number of vertices goes to infinity. Thereby, in the asymptotic, the corresponding vertices can be metaphorically considered as "golden introverts" and "golden extroverts," respectively. This metaphor is reinforced by a Markov chain interpretation of the doubly stochastic graph matrix, according to which F equals the overall transition matrix of a random walk with a random number of steps on G.

Abstract:Finite index subgroups of the modular group are of great arithmetic importance. Farey symbols, introduced by Ravi Kulkarni in 1991, are a tool for working with these groups. Given such a group $\Gamma$, a Farey symbol for $\Gamma$ is a certain finite sequence of rational numbers (representing vertices of a fundamental domain of $\Gamma$) together with pairing information for the edges between the vertices. They are a compact way of encoding the information about the group and they provide a simple way to do calculations with the group. For example: calculating an independent set of generators and decomposing group elements into a word in these generators, finding coset representatives, elliptic points, and genus of the group, testing if the group is congruence, etc. In this expository article, we will discuss Farey Symbols and explicit algorithms for working with them.

Differential transcendence and walks on self-similar graphs

Abstract:Symmetrically self-similar graphs are an important type of fractal graph. Their Green functions satisfy order one iterative functional equations. We show when the branching number of a generating cell is two, either the graph is a star consisting of finitely many one-sided lines meeting at an origin vertex, in which case the Green function is algebraic, or the Green function is differentially transcendental over $\mathbb{C}(z)$. The proof strategy relies on a recent work of Di Vizio, Fernandes and Mishna. The result adds evidence to a conjecture of Krön and Teufl about the spectrum of this family of graphs.

Abstract:Generative Programming (GP) is a computing paradigm allowing automatic creation of entire software families utilizing the configuration of elementary and reusable components. GP can be projected on different technologies, e.g. C++-templates, Java-Beans, Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP), or Frame technology. This paper focuses on Frame Technology, which aids the possible implementation and completion of software components. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the GP paradigm in the area of GUI application generation. It demonstrates how automatically customized executable applications with GUI parts can be generated from an abstract specification.

A unifying theory for metrical results on regular continued fraction convergents and mediants

Abstract:We revisit Ito's (\cite{I1989}) natural extension of the Farey tent map, which generates all regular continued fraction convergents and mediants of a given irrational. With a slight shift in perspective on the order in which these convergents and mediants arise, this natural extension is shown to provide an elegant and powerful tool in the metric theory of continued fractions. A wealth of old and new results -- including limiting distributions of approximation coefficients, analogues of a theorem of Legendre and their refinements, and a generalisation of Lévy's Theorem to subsequences of convergents and mediants -- are presented as corollaries within this unifying theory.

Abstract:We study the connection between Conway-Coxeter frieze patterns and the data of the minimal resolution of a complex curve singularity: using Popescu-Pampu's notion of the lotus of a singularity, we describe a bijection between the dual resolution graphs of Newton non-degenerate plane curve singularities and Conway-Coxeter friezes. We use representation theoretic reduction methods to interpret some of the entries of the frieze coming from the partial resolutions of the corresponding curve singularity. Finally, we translate the notion of mutation, coming from cluster combinatorics, to resolutions of plane complex curves.

The cosmic Galois group, the sunrise Feynman integral, and the relative completion of $Γ_1(6)$

Abstract:In the first part of this paper we study the coaction dual to the action of the cosmic Galois group on the motivic lift of the sunrise Feynman integral with generic masses and momenta, and we express its conjugates in terms of motivic lifts of Feynman integrals associated to related Feynman graphs. Only one of the conjugates of the motivic lift of the sunrise, other than itself, can be expressed in terms of motivic lifts of Feynman integrals of subquotient graphs. To relate the remaining conjugates to Feynman integrals we introduce a general tool: subdiving edges of a graph. We show that all motivic lifts of Feynman integrals associated to graphs obtained by subdividing edges from a graph $G$ are motivic periods of $G$ itself. This was conjectured by Brown in the case of graphs with no kinematic dependence. We also look at the single-valued periods associated to the functions on the motivic Galois group, i.e. the `de Rham periods', which appear in the coaction on the sunrise, and show that they are generalisations of Brown's non-holomorphic modular forms with two weights. In the second part of the paper we consider the relative completion of the torsor of paths on a modular curve and its periods, the theory of which is due to Brown and Hain. Brown studied the motivic periods of the relative completion of $\mathcal{M}_{1,1}$ with respect to the tangential base-point at infinity, and we generalise this to the case of the torsor of paths on any modular curve. We apply this to reprove the claim that the sunrise Feynman integral in the equal-mass case can be expressed in terms of Eichler integrals, periods of the underlying elliptic curve defined by one of the associated graph hypersurfaces, and powers of $2\pi i$.

Abstract:We construct natural representations of the Connes-Kreimer Lie algebras on rooted trees/Feynman graphs arising from Hecke correspondences in the categories $\LRF, \LFG$ constructed by K. Kremnizer and the author. We thus obtain the insertion/elimination representations constructed by Connes-Kreimer as well as an isomorphic pair we term top-insertion/top-elimination. We also construct graded finite-dimensional sub/quotient representations of these arising from "truncated" correspondences.

Abstract:This paper concerns the relationships between continued fractions and the geometry of the Stern-Brocot diagram. Each rational number can be expressed as a continued fraction $[a_0; a_1, \ldots, a_n]$ whose terms $a_i$ are integers and are positive if $i \geq 1$. Select an index $i \in \{ 1, \ldots, n \}$ and replace $a_i$ with an integer $m$ to obtain a continued fraction expansion for an extended rational $\alpha_m \in \mathbb{Q} \cup \{ \infty \}$. This paper shows that the vertices of the Stern-Brocot diagram corresponding to the numbers $\{ \alpha_m \}_{m \in \mathbb{Z}}$ lie on a pair of (extended) Euclidean lines across the diagram. The slopes of these two lines differ only by a sign change and they meet at the point $L=\left([a_0; a_1, \ldots, a_{i-1}], 0\right) \in \mathbb{R}^2$. Moreover, as $\lvert m \rvert \to \infty$, the associated vertices move down these lines and converge to $L$. This paper concludes with a discussion which interprets this result in the context of 2-bridge link complements and Thurston's work on hyperbolic Dehn surgery.

Abstract:Consider a smooth point O of a complex analytic surface S. A constellation based at O is a set of infinitely near points of O, centers of a sequence of blow-ups above O. Finite constellations are usually encoded in two ways: either using an Enriques diagram, or using the dual graph of the divisor obtained by blowing-up the points of the constellation. Both are decorated trees which encode completely the combinatorics of the constellation. Algorithms of passage from one to the other are known, but they do not allow to get a geometrical picture of their relation. We associate to a constellation a geometrical simplicial complex of dimension two, called its kite, endowed with an affine structure, and we prove that it contains canonically both the Enriques diagram and the dual graph. Moreover, the decorations of the two trees may be read very easily on the affine geometry of the kite. This allows to understand geometrically the relations between the graphs, as well as their relation with the valuative tree of Favre and Jonsson, which may be interpreted as the dual graph of the constellation of all the points infinitely near O. In fact, the kites of finite constellations get glued into an infinite kite endowed with a 1-dimensional foliation, whose space of leaves is the valuative tree. The transition towards the computations with continued fractions is ensured by partial embeddings of the kites into a simplicial complex canonically associated to a base of a lattice, called its lotus. This last notion is briefly explored in any dimension.

Primitive Feynman diagrams and the rational Goussarov--Habiro Lie algebra of string links

Abstract:Goussarov-Habiro's theory of clasper surgeries defines a filtration of the monoid of string links $L(m)$ on $m$ strands, in a way that geometrically realizes the Feynman diagrams appearing in low-dimensional and quantum topology. Concretely, $L(m)$ is filtered by $C_n$-equivalence, for $n\geq 1$, which is defined via local moves that can be seen as higher crossing changes. The graded object associated to the Goussarov-Habiro filtration is the Goussarov-Habiro Lie algebra of string links $\mathcal{L} L(m)$. We give a concrete presentation, in terms of primitive Feynman (tree) diagrams and relations ($\text{1T}$, $\text{AS}$, $\text{IHX}$, $\text{STU}^2$), of the rational Goussarov-Habiro Lie algebra $\mathcal{L} L(m)_{\mathbb{Q}}$. To that end, we investigate cycles in graphs of forests: flip graphs associated to forest diagrams and their $\text{STU}$ relations. As an application, we give an alternative diagrammatic proof of Massuyeau's rational version of the Goussarov-Habiro conjecture for string links, which relates indistinguishability under finite type invariants of degree $<n$ and $C_n$-equivalence.

Limits of Convex Projective Surfaces and Finsler Metrics

Abstract:We show that for certain sequences escaping to infinity in the $\operatorname{SL}_3\mathbb{R}$ Hitchin component, growth rates of trace functions are described by natural Finsler metrics. More specifically, as the Labourie-Loftin cubic differential gets big, logarithms of trace functions are approximated by lengths in a Finsler metric which has triangular unit balls and is defined directly in terms of the cubic differential. This is equivalent to a conjecture of Loftin from 2006 which has recently been proven by Loftin, Tamburelli, and Wolf, though phrasing the result in terms of Finsler metrics is new and leads to stronger results with simpler proofs. From our perspective, the result is a corollary of a more local theorem which may have other applications. The key ingredient of the proof is another asymmetric Finsler metric, defined on any convex projective surface, recently defined by Danciger and Stecker, in which lengths of loops are logarithms of eigenvalues. We imitate work of Nie to show that, as the cubic differential gets big, Danciger and Stecker's metric converges to our Finsler metric with triangular unit balls. While Loftin, Tamburelli, and Wolf address cubic differential rays, our methods also address sequences of representations which are asymptotic to cubic differential rays, giving us more insight into natural compactifications of the moduli space of convex projective surfaces.

Abstract:A frieze on a polygon is a map from the diagonals of the polygon to an integral domain which respects the Ptolemy relation. Conway and Coxeter previously studied positive friezes over $\mathbb{Z}$ and showed that they are in bijection with triangulations of a polygon. We extend their work by studying friezes over $\mathbb Z[\sqrt{2}]$ and their relationships to dissections of polygons. We largely focus on the characterization of unitary friezes that arise from dissecting a polygon into triangles and quadrilaterals. We identify a family of dissections that give rise to unitary friezes and conjecture that this gives a complete classification of dissections which admit a unitary frieze.

Abstract:Using the moving frame and invariants, any discrete curve in $\R^3$ could be uniquely identified by its centroaffine curvatures and torsions. In this paper, depending on the affine curvatures of the fractal curves, such as Koch curve and Hilbert curve, we can clearly describe their iterative regularities. Interestingly, by the affine curvatures, the fractal curves can be quantified and encoded accordingly to a sequence. Hence, it is more convenient for future reference. Given three starting points, we can directly generate the affine Koch curve and affine Hilbert curve at the step $n, \forall n\in \mathbb{Z}^+$. Certainly, if the initial three points are standard, the curve is the traditional Koch curve or Hilbert curve. By this method, the characteristic of some fractal curves which look like irregular could be quantified, and the regularities would become more obvious.

Abstract:We use a class of Farey graphs introduced by the final three authors to enumerate the tame friezes over $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$. Using the same strategy we enumerate the tame regular friezes over $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, thereby reproving a recent result of Böhmler, Cuntz, and Mabilat.
