Abstract:In this short note we study null dimensional reduction of M5-brane covariant action. We analyse longitudinal dimensional reduction that leads to non-relativistic D4-brane and transverse reduction that leads to NS5-brane in non-relativistic string theory.

Abstract:We obtain a Lagrangian for a lightlike dimensional reduction of the nonabelian M5 brane theory in six dimension. We assume that the six-manifold has at least one conformal Killing spinor and two commuting lightlike Killing vector fields, and we perform the dimensional reduction along one of these lightlike directions.

Abstract:We construct the nonrelativistic covariant world-volume action for a single M5 brane of D=11 supergravity in M-theory. The corresponding non-Lorentzian (NL) background possesses a codimension three foliation and is identified as the Membrane Newton-Cartan manifold in the presence of background fluxes that are suitably expanded in 1/c2 expansion. We also expand the associated world-volume fields in 1/c2 expansion. The above procedure eventually results into a well defined world-volume action that is coupled to Membrane Newton-Cartan background.

Double dimensional reduction of M5-brane action in Sen formalism

Abstract:In this paper, we present double dimensional reduction of the complete M5-brane action in the Sen formalism of self-dual form. Although in this formalism the gravity couples to the independent pseudo-$2$-form and pseudo-$3$-form fields in a non-standard and very complicated way, the double dimensional reduction on the complete action can be carried out. This is by dualising some components of the pseudo-$2$-form field and integrating out the pseudo-$3$-form field. We show explicitly that the double dimensional reduction on a circle gives rise to the complete D4-brane or the complete dual D4-brane action depending on what components of the pseudo-$2$-form field are dualised. The duality between the D4-brane and dual D4-brane actions are realised in the viewpoint of the Sen formalism as the swapping of the roles of the components of the pseudo-$2$-form field between those which are dualised and those which remain. We also make a brief outline on how to generalise this to the cases of dimensional reduction on some other spaces as well as how to understand the duality of reduced action from the viewpoint of the Sen formalism. An explicit example for dimensional reduction of the quadratic six-dimensional action on a torus is given and the realisation of its S-duality is also discussed.

Abstract:We construct an action for unstable M3-brane in M-theory. We argue that in order to find M3-brane action that upon direct dimensional reduction leads to non-BPS D3-brane action in type IIA theory we have to presume that the background possesses Killing isometry and that this isometry has to be gauged on the world-volume of M3-brane. Then we construct singular tachyon kink on world-volume of M3-brane and we show that the dynamics of resulting topological defect is governed by an action that upon direct dimensional reduction leads to D2-brane in type IIA theory and that is equivalent to standard M2-brane action in flat background.

Rigid open membrane and non-abelian non-commutative Chern-Simons theory

Abstract:In the Berkooz-Douglas matrix model of M theory in the presence of longitudinal $M5$-brane, we investigate the effective dynamics of the system by considering the longitudinal $M5$-brane as the background and the spherical $M5$-brane related with the other space dimensions as the probe brane. Due to there exists the background field strength provided by the source of the longitudinal $M5$-brane, an open membrane should be ended on the spherical $M5$-brane based on the topological reason. The formation of the bound brane configuration for the open membrane ending on the 5-branes in the background of longitudinal 5-brane can be used to model the 4-dimensional quantum Hall system proposed recently by Zhang and Hu. The description of the excitations of the quantum Hall soliton brane configuration is established by investigating the fluctuations of $D0$-branes living on the bound brane around their classical solution derived by the transformations of area preserving diffeomorphisms of the open membrane. We find that this effective field theory for the fluctuations is an SO(4) non-commutative Chern-Simons field theory. The matrix regularized version of this effective field theory is given in order to allow the finite $D0$-branes to live on the bound brane. We also discuss some possible applications of our results to the related topics in M-theory and to the 4-dimensional quantum Hall system.
Reduction of open membrane moduli

Abstract:We perform a general reduction of the open membrane metric in a worldvolume direction of the M5-brane. Using reduction rules analogous to the bulk, we show that the open membrane metric leads to the standard open string metric and open string coupling constant on the D4-brane only for an ``electric'' reduction in which case the open membrane metric has no off-diagonal components and the Born-Infeld curvature tensor is a matrix of rank 2. Instead, if we perform a general reduction, with nonzero off-diagonal components of the open membrane metric, we obtain a rank 4 Born-Infeld tensor corresponding to a bound state of an open string with an open D2--brane. Next, we identify and reduce a 3-form open membrane ``noncommutativity'' tensor on the M5-brane. This open membrane parameter only reduces to the open string noncommutativity tensor on the D4-brane provided we constrain ourselves to an ``electric'' or a ``magnetic'' reduction.

Abstract:We study gravitational anomalies for fivebranes in M theory. We show that an apparent anomaly in diffeomorphisms acting on the normal bundle is cancelled by a careful treatment of the M theory Chern-Simons coupling in the presence of fivebranes. One interesting aspect of our treatment is the way in which a magnetic object (the fivebrane) is smoothed out through coupling to gravity and the resulting relation between antisymmetric tensor gauge transformations and diffeomorphisms in the presence of a fivebrane.

Abstract:We study codimension-1 brane solutions of the 5d brane world models compactified on $S_1 / \mathbb{Z}_2$. In string theoretical setup they suggest that the background branes located at orbifold fixed points should be NS-branes (in the five dimensional sense), rather than D-branes. Indeed, the existence of the background NS-branes is indispensable to obtain flat geometry $M_4 \times S_1 / \mathbb{Z}_2$ where $M_4$ represents the 4d Minkowski spacetime, and without these branes the 5d metric becomes singular everywhere. This result is very reminiscent of the $(p+3)$d effective string theory \cite{1} where the NS-NS type $p$-brane is indispensable to obtain a flat geometry $R_2$ or $R_2 /\mathbb{Z}_n$ on the transverse dimensions. Without this NS-NS type $p$-brane the 2d transverse space becomes a pin-shaped singular space. The correspondence between these two theories leads us to a conjecture that the whole flat backgrounds of the string theory inherently invovle the NS-branes implicitly in their ansatz, and hence the true background $p$-branes immanent in our spacetime may be NS-branes, instead of D-branes. We argue that this result can have a significant consequence in the context of the cosmological constant problem.

Abstract:A bstract We initiate a study of the holographic duals of a class of four-dimensional = 2 superconformal field theories that are engineered by wrapping M5-branes on a sphere with an irregular puncture. These notably include the strongly-coupled field theories of Argyres-Douglas type. Our solutions are obtained in 7d gauged supergravity, where they take the form of a warped product of AdS 5 and a "half-spindle." The irregular puncture is modeled by a localized M5-brane source in the internal space of the gravity duals. Our solutions feature a realization of supersymmetry that is distinct from the usual topological twist, as well as an interesting Stückelberg mechanism involving the gauge field associated to a generator of the isometry algebra of the internal space. We check the proposed duality by computing the holographic central charge, the flavor symmetry central charge, and the dimensions of various supersymmetric probe M2-branes, and matching these with the dual Argyres-Douglas field theories. Furthermore, we compute the large- N 't Hooft anomalies of the field theories using anomaly inflow methods in M-theory, and find perfect agreement with the proposed duality.

Abstract:Under certain conditions some solutions to five-dimensional heterotic M-theory can be accurately described by the four-dimensional action of the theory - they have a four-dimensional limit. We consider the connection between solutions of four and five-dimensional heterotic M-theory when moving five-branes are present in the bulk. We begin by describing how to raise the known four-dimensional moving brane solutions to obtain approximate solutions to the five-dimensional theory, presenting for the first time the metric template necessary for this procedure. We then present the first solutions to the five-dimensional theory containing moving five-branes. We can then discuss the connection between our new exact five-dimensional solution and the four-dimensional ones. It is shown that our new solution corresponds to a solution with a static brane in four-dimensions. In other words our new solution could not have been identified as containing a moving brane from a purely four-dimensional viewpoint.

Abstract:We carry out nonrelativistic expansion for NS5 brane based on a codimension two foliation of type IIA supergravity background. We simultaneously expand the world-volume fields in an appropriate $ 1/c^2 $ expansion together with the background fluxes. When put together, the resulting procedure yields a finite world-volume action for nonrelativistic NS5 brane that is coupled to String Newton-Cartan background.

Non-Relativistic M2-Branes and the AdS/CFT Correspondence

Abstract:A non-relativistic limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence is studied in the context of M2-branes. On the field theory side this corresponds to a near-BPS limit of ABJM that localises onto solutions of Hitchin's equations. It is shown that the symmetries of the theory include an infinite-dimensional enhancement of the spatial symmetry algebra corresponding to time-dependent holomorphic transformations. Taking the limit of the gravitational dual splits the geometry into three 'large' directions and eight 'small' directions and corresponds to the Membrane-Newton-Cartan limit of eleven-dimensional supergravity. This has the effect of reducing the $AdS_4$ factor to an $AdS_2$ factor for the near-horizon limit of the M2-brane metric. Evidence is presented that the duality is maintained after the limit.

Amplitudes for Multiple M5 Branes

Abstract:We study N=(m,0) super-Poincare invariant six-dimensional massless and five-dimensional massive on-shell amplitudes. We demonstrate that in six dimensions, all possible three-point amplitudes involving tensor multiplets are necessarily embedded in gravitational theories. For non-gravitational amplitudes we consider instead five-dimensional massive amplitudes with N=(2,0) supersymmetry, aiming at describing the world volume theory of multiple M5 branes compactified on M^{4,1}x S^1. We find non-gravitational amplitudes whose on-shell degrees of freedom are shown to match those of the massive particle states that arise from self-dual strings wrapping a circle. Along the way we find interesting hints of a fermionic symmetry in the (2,0) theory, which accompanies the self-dual tensor gauge symmetry. We also discuss novel theories with (3,0) and (4,0) supersymmetry.

Abstract:We study classical M5 brane solutions in the probe limit in the $AdS_7 \times S^4$ spacetime geometry with worldvolume 3-form flux. These solutions describe the holography of codimension-4 defects in the 6d boundary dual $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetric gauge theories. Starting from some half-BPS solutions which follow stricter BPS conditions, we find a general $\frac{1}{16}$-BPS solution. We show how some of the \textit{giant-like} M5 brane solutions here may be related to the codimension-2 surface operators in the 4d gauge theory.

Abstract:We construct some new brane solutions in M-theory, based on the minimal surfaces. In particular, we consider the anti-self-dual Nutku geometry, and embed it in the membranes and five-branes of the eleven-dimensional supergravity. We explicitly show that the solutions preserve eight supersymmetries. Upon compactification on a circle, we find fully localized intersecting brane systems. We also discuss the T-dual and the decoupling limits of the solutions.
