Abstract:Flocking, as paradigmatically exemplified by birds, is the coherent collective motion of active agents. As originally conceived, flocking emerges through alignment interactions between the agents. Here, we report that flocking can also emerge through interactions that turn agents away from each other. Combining simulations, kinetic theory, and experiments, we demonstrate this mechanism of flocking in self-propelled Janus colloids with stronger repulsion on the front than on the rear. The polar state is stable because particles achieve a compromise between turning away from left and right neighbors. Unlike for alignment interactions, the emergence of polar order from turn-away interactions requires particle repulsion. At high concentration, repulsion produces flocking Wigner crystals. Whereas repulsion often leads to motility-induced phase separation of active particles, here it combines with turn-away torques to produce flocking. Therefore, our findings bridge the classes of aligning and nonaligning active matter. Our results could help to reconcile the observations that cells can flock despite turning away from each other via contact inhibition of locomotion. Abstract:We investigate the collective behavior of sterically interacting self-propelled particles confined in a harmonic potential. Our theoretical and numerical study unveils the emergence of distinctive collective polar organizations, revealing how different levels of interparticle torques and noise influence the system. The observed phases include the shear-banded vortex, where the system self organizes in two concentric bands rotating in opposite directions around the potential center; the uniform vortex, where the two bands merge into a close packed configurations rotating uniformly as a quasi-rigid body; and the orbiting polar state, characterized by parallel orientation vectors and the cluster revolving around the potential center, without rotation, as a rigid body. Intriguingly, at lower filling fractions, the vortex and polar phases merge into a single phase where the trapped cluster breaks into smaller polarized clusters, each one orbiting the potential center as a rigid body.

Abstract:Vorticity, a measure of the local rate of rotation of a fluid element, is the driver of incompressible flow. In viscous fluids, powering bulk flows requires the continuous injection of vorticity from boundaries to counteract the diffusive effects of viscosity. Here we power a flow from within by suspending approximately cylindrical particles and magnetically driving them to rotate at Reynolds numbers in the intermediate range. We find that a single particle generates a localized three-dimensional region of vorticity around it—which we call a vortlet—that drives a number of remarkable behaviours. Slight asymmetries in the particle shape can deform the vortlet and cause the particle to self-propel. Interactions between vortlets are similarly rich, generating bound dynamical states. When a large number of vortlets interact, they spontaneously form collectively moving flocks. These flocks remain coherent while propelling, splitting and merging. If enough particles are added so as to saturate the flow chamber, a homogeneous three-dimensional active chiral fluid of vortlets is formed, which can be manipulated with gravity or flow chamber boundaries, leading to lively collective dynamics. Our findings demonstrate an inertial regime for synthetic active matter, provide a controlled physical system for the quantitative study of three-dimensional flocking in non-sentient systems and establish a platform for the study of three-dimensional active chiral fluids.

Abstract:Coherent vortical motion has been reported in a wide variety of populations including living organisms (bacteria, fishes, human crowds) and synthetic active matter (shaken grains, mixtures of biopolymers), yet a unified description of the formation and structure of this pattern remains lacking. Here we report the self-organization of motile colloids into a macroscopic steadily rotating vortex. Combining physical experiments and numerical simulations, we elucidate this collective behavior. We demonstrate that the emergent-vortex structure lives on the verge of a phase separation, and single out the very constituents responsible for this state of polar active matter. Building on this observation, we establish a continuum theory and lay out a strong foundation for the description of vortical collective motion in a broad class of motile populations constrained by geometrical boundaries.

Abstract:In this study, we focus on the collective dynamics of polar active particles navigating across three distinct surfaces, each characterized by its own unique blend of topological and geometrical properties. The behavior of these active particles is influenced by a multitude of factors, including self-propulsion, inter-particle interactions, surface constraints, and under-damped stochastic forces simulated via Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes. Our exploration unveils the prevailing collective patterns observed within these systems across three surface types: a sphere, a torus, and a landscape featuring hills and valleys, each distinguished by its specific topological and geometrical attributes. We underscore the profound impact of surface curvature and symmetry on the sustainable spatial-temporal dynamics witnessed. Our findings illuminate how the interplay between substantial surface curvature and particular symmetrical characteristics gives rise to a diverse spectrum of spatial-temporal patterns. Notably, we discern that high curvature tends to drive collective motion toward cyclic rotation on spheres and tori, or spatial-temporal periodic traveling ring patterns on landscapes with hills and valleys. Additionally, we observe that rough surfaces and the incorporation of excluded volume effects can disrupt the complexity of these collective spatial-temporal patterns. Through this investigation, we provide invaluable insight into the intricate interplay of curvature and symmetry, profoundly shaping collective behaviors among active particles across varied surfaces.
Fluctuation-Induced First Order Transition to Collective Motion

Abstract:The nature of the transition to collective motion in assemblies of aligning self-propelled particles remains a long-standing matter of debate. In this article, we focus on dry active matter and show that weak fluctuations suffice to generically turn second-order mean-field transitions into a `discontinuous' coexistence scenario. Our theory shows how fluctuations induce a density-dependence of the polar-field mass, even when this effect is absent at mean-field level. In turn, this dependency on density triggers a feedback loop between ordering and advection that ultimately leads to an inhomogeneous transition to collective motion and the emergence of non-linear travelling `flocks'. Importantly, we show that such a fluctuation-induced first order transition is present in both metric models, in which particles align with neighbors within a finite distance, and in topological ones, in which alignment is not based on relative distances. We compute analytically the noise-induced renormalization of the polar-field mass using stochastic calculus, which we further back up by a one-loop field-theoretical analysis. Finally, we confirm our analytical predictions by numerical simulations of fluctuating hydrodynamics as well as of topological microscopic models with either $k$-nearest neighbors or Voronoi alignment.

Swarming and swirling in self-propelled polar granular rods

Abstract:Using experiments with anisotropic vibrated rods and quasi-2D numerical simulations, we show that shape plays an important role in the collective dynamics of self-propelled (SP) particles. We demonstrate that SP rods exhibit local ordering, aggregation at the side walls, and clustering absent in round SP particles. Furthermore, we find that at sufficiently strong excitation SP rods engage in a persistent swirling motion in which the velocity is strongly correlated with particle orientation.

Rotating cluster formations emerge in an ensemble of active particles

Abstract:Rotating clusters or vortices are formations of agents that rotate around a common center. These patterns may be found in very different contexts: from swirling fish to surveillance drones. Here, we propose a minimal model for self-propelled chiral particles with inertia, which shows different types of vortices. We consider an attractive interaction for short distances on top of the repulsive interaction that accounts for volume exclusion. We study cluster formation and we find that the cluster size and clustering coefficient increase with the packing of particles. Finally, we classify three new types of vortices: encapsulated, periodic and chaotic. These clusters may coexist and their proportion depends on the density of the ensemble. The results may be interesting to understand some patterns found in nature and to design agents that automatically arrange themselves in a desired formation while exchanging only relative information.

Abstract:We present a generic framework for describing interacting, spinning, active polar particles, aimed at modelling dense cell aggregates, where cells are treated as polar, rotating objects that interact mechanically with one another and their surrounding environment. Using principles from non-equilibrium thermodynamics, we derive constitutive equations for interaction forces, torques, and polarity dynamics. We subsequently use this framework to analyse the spontaneous motion of cell doublets, uncovering a rich phase diagram of collective behaviours, including steady rotation driven by flow-polarity coupling or interactions between polarity and cell position.

Abstract:We develop and study the hydrodynamic theory of flocking with autochemotaxis. This describes large collections of self-propelled entities all spontaneously moving in the same direction, each emitting a substance which attracts the others (e.g., ants). The theory combines features of the Keller-Segel model for autochemotaxis with the Toner-Tu theory of flocking. We find that sufficiently strong autochemotaxis leads to an instability of the uniformly moving state (the "flock"), in which bands of different density form moving parallel to the mean flock velocity with different speeds. This instability is, therefore, completely different from the well-known "banding instability," in which bands form perpendicular to the mean flock velocity. The bands we find, which are reminiscent of ant trails, coarsen over time to reach a phase-separated state, in which one high-density and one low-density band fill the entire system. The same instability, described by the same hydrodynamic theory, can occur in flocks phase separating due to any microscopic mechanism (e.g., sufficiently strong attractive interactions). Although in many ways analogous to equilibrium phase separation via spinodal decomposition, the two steady-state densities here are determined not by a common tangent construction, as in equilibrium, but by an un common tangent construction very similar to that found for motility-induced phase separation of disordered active particles. Abstract:Group formation in living systems typically results from a delicate balance of repulsive, aligning, and attractive interactions. We found that a mere motility change of the individuals in response to the visual perception of their peers induces group formation and cohesion. We tested this principle in a real system of active particles whose motilities are controlled by an external feedback loop. For narrow fields of view, individuals gathered into cohesive nonpolarized groups without requiring active reorientations. For wider fields of view, cohesion could be achieved by lowering the response threshold. We expect this motility-induced cohesion mechanism to be relevant not only for the self-organization of living systems, but also for the design of robust and scalable autonomous systems.

Topology-driven ordering of flocking matter

Abstract:When interacting motile units self-organize into flocks, they realize one of the most robust ordered state found in nature. However, after twenty five years of intense research, the very mechanism controlling the ordering dynamics of both living and artificial flocks has remained unsettled. Here, combining active-colloid experiments, numerical simulations and analytical work, we explain how flocking liquids heal their spontaneous flows initially plagued by collections of topological defects to achieve long-ranged polar order even in two dimensions. We demonstrate that the self-similar ordering of flocking matter is ruled by a living network of domain walls linking all $\pm 1$ vortices, and guiding their annihilation dynamics. Crucially, this singular orientational structure echoes the formation of extended density patterns in the shape of interconnected bow ties. We establish that this double structure emerges from the interplay between self-advection and density gradients dressing each $-1$ topological charges with four orientation walls. We then explain how active Magnus forces link all topological charges with extended domain walls, while elastic interactions drive their attraction along the resulting filamentous network of polarization singularities. Taken together our experimental, numerical and analytical results illuminate the suppression of all flow singularities, and the emergence of pristine unidirectional order in flocking matter.

Flocking in Binary Mixtures of Anti-aligning Self-propelled Particles

Abstract:We consider two species of self-propelled point particles: A-particles and B-particles. The orientations between nearby particles are subject to pair interactions of different strength for A-A-, A-B-(=B-A-) and B-B-interactions, respectively. Even if all interactions involved are repelling, that is, if they locally favor anti-alignment between each pair of particles, we find global polar order of both A-particles and B-particles We find qualitative agreement between agent-based simulations and mean field theory. Beyond mean field, we develop a Boltzmann-scattering theory based on one-sided molecular chaos that yields excellent quantitative agreement with simulations for dilute systems. For large systems, we find, depending on parameters, either micro-phase-separation or static patterns with either patches or stripes that carry different polarization orientations.

Collective Motion of Self-Propelled Particles with Density-Dependent Switching Effect

Abstract:We study the effect of density-dependent angular response on large scale collective motion, that particles are more likely to switch their moving direction within lower local density region. We show that the presence of density-dependent angular response leads to three typical phases: polar liquid, micro-phase separation and disordered gas states. In our model, the transition between micro-phase separation and disordered gas is discontinuous. Giant number fluctuation is observed in polar liquid phase with statistically homogeneous order. In the micro-phase separation parameter space, high order and high density bands dominate the dynamics. We also compare our results with Vicsek model and show that the density-dependent directional switching response can stabilize the band state to very low noise condition. This band stripe could recruit almost all the particles in the system, which greatly enhances the coherence of the system. Our results could be helpful for understanding extremely coherent motion in nature and also would have practical implications for designing novel self-organization pattern.

Abstract:Collective motion of active particles with polar alignment is investigated on a sphere.We discussed the factors that affect particle swarm motion and define an order parameter that can show the degree of particle swarm motion.In the model,we added a polar alignment strength,along with Gaussian curvature,affecting particles swarm motion.We find that when the force exceeds a certain limit,the order parameter will decrease with the increase of the force.Combined with our definition of order parameter and observation of the model,the reason is that particles begin to move side by side under the influence of polar forces.In addition,the effects of velocity,rotational diffusion coefficient,and packing fraction on particle swarm motion are discussed.It is found that the rotational diffusion coefficient and the packing fraction have a great influence on the clustering motion of particles,while the velocity has little influence on the clustering motion of particles.

Abstract:We discuss the collective dynamics of self-propelled particles with selective attraction and repulsion interactions. Each particle, or individual, may respond differently to its neighbors depending on the sign of their relative velocity. Thus, it is able to distinguish approaching (coming closer) and moving away individuals. This differentiation of the social response is motivated by the response to looming visual stimuli and may be seen as a generalization of the previously proposed, biologically motivated, escape and pursuit interactions. The model can account for different types of behavior such as pure attraction, pure repulsion, or escape and pursuit depending on the values (signs) of the different response strengths, and provides, in the light of recent experimental results, an interesting alternative to previously proposed models of collective motion with an explicit velocity-alignment interaction. We show the onset of large scale collective motion in a subregion of the parameter space, which corresponds to an effective escape and/or pursuit response. Furthermore, we discuss the observed spatial patterns and show how kinetic description of the dynamics can be derived from the individual based model.
