Abstract:In the infinite-dimensional separable complex Hilbert space we construct new abstract examples of unbounded maximal accretive and maximal sectorial operators $B$ for which ${\rm dom\,}B^{\frac{1}{2}}\ne{\rm dom\,}B^{*{\frac{1}{2}}}$. New criterions for the equality are established.

Abstract:Using the approach proposed in [5] , in an infinite-dimensional separable complex Hilbert space we give abstract constructions of families $\{{\mathcal T}_z\}_{{\rm Im\,} z>0}$ of closed densely defined symmetric operators with the properties: (I) the domain of ${\mathcal T}_z^2$ is a core of ${\mathcal T}_z$, (II) the domain of ${\mathcal T}_z^2$ is dense but note a core of ${\mathcal T}_z$, (III) the domain of ${\mathcal T}_z^2$ is nontrivial but non-dense. For this purpose a class of maximal dissipative operators is defined and studied. The case ${\rm dom\,} {\mathcal T}_z^2=\{0\}$ has been considered in [5].

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the square root problem of Kato for the "sum" of linear operators in a Hilbert space ${\mathbb H}$. Under suitable assumptions, we show that if $A$ and $B$ are respectively m-scetroial linear operators satisfying the square root problem of Kato. Then the same conclusion still holds for their "sum". As application, we consider perturbed Schrödinger operators.

Abstract:In his monograph on Infinite Abelian Groups, I. Kaplansky raised three ``test problems" concerning their structure and multiplicity. As noted by Azoff, these problems make sense for any category admitting a direct sum operation. Here, we are interested in the operator theoretic version of Kaplansky's second problem which asks: if $A$ and $B$ are operators on an infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space and $A \oplus A$ is equivalent to $B \oplus B$ in some (precise) sense, is $A$ equivalent to $B$? We examine this problem under a strengthening of the hypothesis, where a ``primitive" square root $J_2(A)$ of $A\oplus A$ is assumed to be equivalent to the corresponding square root $J_2(B)$ of $B \oplus B$. When ``equivalence" refers to similarity of operators and $A$ is a compact operator, we deduce from this stronger hypothesis that $A$ and $B$ are similar. We exhibit a counterexample (due to J. Bell) of this phenomenon in the setting of unital rings. Also, we exhibit an uncountable family $\{ U_\alpha\}_{\alpha \in \Omega}$ of unitary operators, no two of which are unitarily equivalent, such that each $U_\alpha$ is unitarily equivalent to $J_n(U_\alpha)$, a ``primitive" $n^{th}$ root of $U_\alpha \oplus U_\alpha \oplus \cdots \oplus U_\alpha$.

Abstract:This paper shows that for the domain intersection $\dom T\cap\dom T^*$ of a closed linear operator and its Hilbert space adjoint everything is possible for very common classes of operators with non-empty resolvent set. Apart from the most striking case of a maximal sectorial operator with $\dom T\cap\dom T^*=\{0\}$, we construct classes of operators for which $\dim(\dom T\cap\dom T^*)= n \in \dN_0$; $\dim(\dom T\cap\dom T^*)= \infty$ and at the same time $\codim(\dom T\cap\dom T^*)=\infty$; and $\codim(\dom T\cap\dom T^*)= n \in \dN_0$; the latter includes~the case that $\dom T\cap\dom T^*$ is dense but no core of $T$ and $T^*$ and the case $\dom T=\dom T^*$ for non-normal $T$. We also show that all these possibilities may occur for operators $T$ with non-empty resolvent set such that either $W(T)=\dC$, $T$ is maximal accretive but not sectorial, or $T$ is even maximal sectorial. Moreover, in all but one subcase $T$ can be chosen with compact resolvent.

Abstract:We give a proof for the Kato square root problem on suitable open sets and subject to pure Dirichlet boundary conditions. In contrast to earlier work, our proof uses only second-order techniques and is in the spirit of the proof given by Egert--Haller--Monniaux--Tolksdorf in the scope of the 27th international internet seminar for $\Omega = \mathbb{R}^n$. In contrast to the usual proofs based on the first-order framework by Axelsson--Keith--McIntosh, the proof becomes substantially shorter and technically less demanding.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a complex, separable Hilbert space, and set $\mathfrak{c}($NIL$_2)=\{ MN - NM : N, M \in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}), M^2 = 0 = N^2 \}$. When $\dim\, \mathcal{H}$ is finite, we characterise the set $\mathfrak{c}($NIL$_2)$ and its norm-closure CLOS$(\mathfrak{c}($NIL$_2))$. In the infinite-dimensional setting, we characterise the intersection of CLOS$(\mathfrak{c}($NIL$_2))$ with the set of biquasitriangular operators, and we exhibit an index obstruction to belonging to CLOS$(\mathfrak{c}($NIL$_2))$.

Abstract:A new notion of a Hausdorff-type operator on function spaces over domains in Euclidean spaces is introduced, and a sufficient condition for the boundedness of this operator on Sobolev spaces is proved. It is shown that this condition cannot be weakened in general.

Abstract:We explore the maximality of the Hilbert square of maximal real surfaces, and find that in many cases the Hilbert square is maximal if and only if the surface has connected real locus. In particular, the Hilbert square of no maximal K3-surface is maximal. Nevertheless, we exhibit maximal surfaces with disconnected real locus whose Hilbert square is maximal.

Abstract:In 1993, Kahn and Kalai famously constructed a sequence of finite sets in $d$-dimensional Euclidean spaces that cannot be partitioned into less than $(1.203\ldots+o(1))^{\sqrt{d}}$ parts of smaller diameter. Their method works not only for the Euclidean, but for all $\ell_p$-spaces as well. In this short note, we observe that the larger the value of $p$, the stronger this construction becomes.

Abstract:For given positive integers $d$ and $m$, consider the projective klt pairs $(X,B)$ of dimension $d$, of Cartier index $m$, and with semi-ample $K_X+B$ defining a contraction $\pi\colon X\to Z$. We prove that it is not possible in general to write $n(K_X+B)\sim\pi^*A_Z$ for some $n$ depending only on $d$ and $m$, and some Cartier divisor $A_Z$ on $Z$.

Abstract:This paper is a follow-up to a recent article about the essential spectrum of Toeplitz operators acting on the Bergman space over the unit ball. As mentioned in the said article, some of the arguments can be carried over to the case of bounded symmetric domains and some cannot. The aim of this paper is to close the gaps to obtain comparable results for general bounded symmetric domains. In particular, we show that a Toeplitz operator on the Bergman space $A^p_{\nu}$ is Fredholm if and only if all of its limit operators are invertible. Even more generally, we show that this is in fact true for all band-dominated operators, an algebra that contains the Toeplitz algebra. Moreover, we characterize compactness and explain how the Berezin transform comes into play. In particular, we show that a bounded linear operator is compact if and only if it is band-dominated and its Berezin transform vanishes at the boundary. For $p = 2$ "band-dominated" can be replaced by "contained in the Toeplitz algebra".

Abstract:Let A be a positive bounded operator acting on a complex Hilbert space H . For two bounded operators B and C on H , we denote by M2,B,C the basic elementary operator on the class of Hilbert–Schmidt operators C2(H) , i.e. M2,B,C(X)=BXC for all X∈C2(H) . In this paper, we investigate the A -numerical range WA(M2,B,(C♯A)∗) and the A -maximal numerical range WmaxA(M2,B,(C♯A)∗) , where A=M2,A,A , C♯A is the reduced solution of the equation AX=C∗A and C∗ is the adjoint of C . Within this framework, we show, under some A -hyponormality conditions, the following two equalities: WA(M2,B,(C♯A)∗) ̄=co(WA(B) ̄⋅WA(C) ̄) and WmaxA(M2,B,(C♯A)∗)=co(WmaxA(B)⋅WmaxA(C)), where WA(⋅) , WmaxA(⋅) and co(⋅) denote respectively the A -numerical range, the A -maximal numerical range and the convex hull. Here, the bar stands for the closure. The first equality allows us to establish that ‖M2,B,(C♯A)∗‖A=‖B‖A‖C‖A, where ‖⋅‖A and ‖⋅‖A designate the A -operator seminorm and the A -operator seminorm, respectively.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to an open problem: find the maximum of the product ∏k=1nr(Bk,ak) ( r(B,a) is an inner radius of the domain B with respect to a point a ) over all non-overlapping domains Bk⊂C and points ak∈Bk∩[−1;1] , k=1,...,n , where n >4. Also we consider similar problems on extremal decomposition of the complex plane for the case when almost all points are on the real axis and one of the points is infinitely distant, the case when one of the points lies outside the straight line and the case when an inner radius of the domain containing one of the points of a certain segment is taken in some positive real power γ . The purpose of this paper is to obtain sharp estimates for these cases.
