Abstract:We study germs of analytic maps $f:(X,S)\rightarrow(\mathbb{C}^p,0)$, when $X$ is an ICIS of dimension $n<p$. We define an image Milnor number, generalizing Mond's definition, $\mu_I(X,f)$ and give results known for the smooth case such as the conservation of this quantity by deformations. We also use this to characterise the Whitney equisingularity of families of corank one map germs $f_t\colon(\mathbb{C}^n,S)\to(\mathbb{C}^{n+1},0)$ with isolated instabilities in terms of the constancy of the $\mu_I^*$-sequences of $f_t$ and the projections $\pi\colon D^2(f_t)\to\mathbb{C}^n$, where $D^2(f_t)$ is the ICIS given by double point space of $f_t$ in $\mathbb{C}^n\times\mathbb{C}^n$. The $\mu_I^*$-sequence of a map germ consist of the image Milnor number of the map germ and all its successive transverse slices.

Abstract:This is the LaTeX version of the handwritten notes of a lecture at the Kyoto Singularities Symposium held at the RIMS in April 1978. It presents the relationship of various invariants of isolated singularities of complex analytic hypersurfaces with the jacobian Newton polygon built from the polar curves. An appendix presents features of the semiring of Newton polygons, because the product of Jacobian Newton polygons corresponds to the Thom-Sebastiani sum of hypersurfaces. Analogies between mixed multiplicities and mixed volumes are noticed. They have been explained since.
Triangulated characterizations of singularities

Abstract:This work presents a range of triangulated characterizations for important classes of singularities such as derived splinters, rational singularities, and Du Bois singularities. An invariant called 'level' in a triangulated category can be used to measure the failure of a variety to have a prescribed singularity type. We provide explicit computations of this invariant for reduced Nagata schemes of Krull dimension one and for affine cones over smooth projective hypersurfaces. Furthermore, these computations are utilized to produce upper bounds for Rouquier dimension on the respective bounded derived categories.

Abstract:We introduce a variation of the well-known Newton-Hironaka polytope for algebroid hypersurfaces. This combinatorial object is a perturbed version of the original one, parametrized by a real number. For well-chosen values of the parameter, the objects obtained are very close to the original, while at the same time presenting more (hopefully interesting) information in a way which does not depend on the choice of parameter.

Landau Singularities from Whitney Stratifications

Abstract:We demonstrate that the complete and non-redundant set of Landau singularities of Feynman integrals may be explicitly obtained from the Whitney stratification of an algebraic map. As a proof of concept, we leverage recent theoretical and algorithmic advances in their computation, as well as their software implementation, in order to determine this set for several nontrivial examples of two-loop integrals. Interestingly, different strata of the Whitney stratification describe not only the singularities of a given integral, but also those of integrals obtained from kinematic limits, e.g.~by setting some of its masses or momenta to zero.

In order to describe the degree d essentially determined polynomials, a computation of the required number of isolated singular points is provided. A dichotomy appears for the values of ; depending on a certain parity, the space of essentially determined polynomials is an open or closed Zariski set. We compute the map , describing under what conditions a configuration of 4 points leads to a degree 3 essentially determined polynomial. Furthermore, we describe explicitly configurations supporting degree 3 non essential determined polynomials. The quotient space of essentially determined polynomials of degree 3 up to the action of the affine group determines a singular -analytic surface.

Singularities of orthogonal and symplectic determinantal varieties

Abstract:Let either $GL(E)\times SO(F)$ or $GL(E)\times Sp(F)$ act naturally on the space of matrices $E\otimes F$. There are only finitely many orbits, and the orbit closures are orthogonal and symplectic generalizations of determinantal varieties, which can be described similarly using rank conditions. In this paper, we study the singularities of these varieties and describe their defining equations. We prove that in the symplectic case, the orbit closures are normal with good filtrations, and in characteristic $0$ have rational singularities. In the orthogonal case we show that most orbit closures will have the same properties, and determine precisely the exceptions to this.

Abstract:A local bifurcation analysis of a high-dimensional dynamical system dxdt=f(x) is performed using a good deformation of the polynomial mapping P:Cn→Cn. This theory is used to construct geometric aspects of the resolution of multiple zeros of the polynomial vector field P(x). Asymptotic bifurcation rules are derived from Grothendieck's theory of residuals. Following the Coxeter–Dynkin classification, the singularity graph is constructed. A detailed study of three types of multidimensional mappings with a large symmetry group has been carried out, namely: 1. A linear singularity (behaves similarly to a one-dimensional complex analysis theory); 2. The lattice singularity (generalized the linear and resembling regular crystal growth models); 3. The fan-shaped singularity (can be split radially like nuclear fission and fusion models).
Obstructions to semiorthogonal decompositions for singular projective varieties II: Representation theory

Abstract:We show that odd-dimensional projective varieties with tilting objects and only ADE-hypersurface singularities are nodal, i.e. they only have $A_1$-singularities. This is a very special case of more general obstructions to the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions for projective Gorenstein varieties. More precisely, for many isolated hypersurface singularities, we show that Kuznetsov-Shinder's categorical absorptions of singularities cannot contain tilting objects. The key idea is to compare singularity categories of projective varieties to singularity categories of finite-dimensional associative Gorenstein algebras. The former often contain special generators, called cluster-tilting objects, which typically have loops and $2$-cycles in their quivers. In contrast, quivers of cluster-tilting objects in the latter categories, can never have loops or $2$-cycles.

Abstract:Algebraic boundaries of convex semi-algebraic sets are closely related to polynomial optimization problems. Building upon Rainer Sinn's work, we refine the stratification of iterated singular loci to a Whitney (a) stratification, which gives a list of candidates of varieties whose dual is an irreducible component of the algebraic boundary of the dual convex body. We also present an algorithm based on Teissier's criterion to compute Whitney (a) stratifications, which employs conormal spaces and prime decomposition.

Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

Abstract:Let V be a hypersurface with an isolated singularity at the origin in ℂ n +1 . It is a natural question to ask when V is defined by weighted homogeneous polynomial or homogeneous polynomial up to biholomorphic change of coordinates. In 1971, a beautiful theorem of Saito gives a necessary and sufficient condition for V to be defined by a weighted homogeneous polynomial. For a two-dimensional isolated hypersurface signularity V , Xu and Yau found a coordinate free characterization for V to be defined by a homogeneous polynomial. Recently Lin and Yau gave necessary and sufficient conditions for a 3-dimensional isolated hypersurface singularity with geometric genus bigger than zero to be defined by a homogeneous polynomial. The purpose of this paper is to prove that Lin-Yau’s theorem remains true for singularities with geometric genus equal to zero.
A Jacobian criterion for nonsingularity in mixed characteristic

Abstract:We give a version of the usual Jacobian characterization of the defining ideal of the singular locus in the equal characteristic case: the new theorem is valid for essentially affine algebras over a complete local algebra over a mixed characteristic discrete valuation ring. The result makes use of the minors of a matrix that includes a row coming from the values of a $p$-derivation. To study the analogue of modules of differentials associated with the mixed Jacobian matrices that arise in our context, we introduce and investigate the notion of a perivation, which may be thought of, roughly, as a linearization of the notion of $p$-derivation. We also develop a mixed characteristic analogue of the positive characteristic $\Gamma$-construction, and apply this to give additional nonsingularity criteria.

Strong desingularization of semialgebraic sets and applications

Abstract:Hironaka's resolution of singularities is a celebrated discipline that has many applications in many areas of Mathematics. In this work we approach the desingularization of semialgebraic sets ${\mathcal S}\subset{\mathbb R}^n$. We prove the counterpart to `Hironaka's desingularization of real algebraic sets' in the semialgebraic setting. It involves Nash manifolds with corners instead of non-singular real algebraic sets. The obtained results are optimal when ${\mathcal S}$ is a closed semialgebraic set. The main tools involved are: Hironaka's desingularization of real algebraic sets, Hironaka's embedded desingularization of real algebraic subsets of non-singular real algebraic sets and drilling blow-ups of Nash manifolds with centers closed Nash submanifolds. We show how to `build' a Nash manifold with corners ${\mathcal Q}\subset{\mathbb R}^n$ from a suitable Nash manifold $M\subset{\mathbb R}^n$ (of its same dimension), which contains ${\mathcal Q}$ as a closed subset, by folding $M$ along the irreducible components of a normal-crossings divisor of $M$, which is the smallest Nash subset of $M$ that contains the boundary $\partial{\mathcal Q}$ of ${\mathcal Q}$. One can choose as the Nash manifold $M$ the Nash `double' $D({\mathcal Q})$ of ${\mathcal Q}$, which is analogous to the Nash double of a Nash manifold with boundary, but $D({\mathcal Q})$ takes into account the peculiarities of the boundary of a Nash manifold with corners. We include several applications: (1) Weak desingularization of closed semialgebraic sets using Nash manifolds with boundary, (2) Representation of compact semialgebraic sets connected by analytic paths as images under Nash maps of closed unit balls, (3) Construction of Nash models for compact orientable smooth surfaces of genus $g\geq0$, and (4) Nash approximation of continuous semialgebraic maps whose target spaces are Nash manifolds with corners.

Abstract:Definition 0. Let V be a Stein analytic space with x as its only singular point. Let 7r: M -V be a resolution of the singularity of V. We shall denote dim H1(M, 9), 1 < i < n 1 by h(i), and dim Hq(M, UP) for 1 ? p < n, 1 < q < n by hP,q(M). So far as the classification problem is concerned, h (n-i) is one of the most important invariants. In this paper, we shall introduce a bunch of invariants (cf. Definition 2.6, Definition 4.1, and Definition 5.1) which are naturally attached to isolated singularities. These invariants are used to characterize the different notions of sheaves of germs of holomorphic differential forms on analytic spaces. Various formulae which relate all these invariants are proved. We also show how to calculate these invariants explicitly. Our paper is organized as follows. In section 2 we discuss the relationship between three different kinds of sheaves of germs of holomorphic forms introduced by Grauert-Grothendieck, Noether and Ferrari respectively, and the dualizing sheaf on a complex analytic space which admits only isolated singularities. We remark that the torsion sheaf of the sheaf of germs of holomorphic p-forms in the sense of Grauert-Grothendieck was studied by Brieskorn [9], Greuel [48], Kantor [19], Suzuki [38], Vetter [39] and the author [43]. Abstract:Let p be a normal singularity of the 2-dimensional Stein space V . Let π : M → V be a resolution of V such that the irreducible components Ai, 1 ≤ i ≤ n, of A = π−1(p) are nonsingular and have only normal crossings.
