Abstract:A hyperbolic group acts by homeomorphisms on its Gromov boundary. We show that if this boundary is a topological n-sphere the action is topologically stable in the dynamical sense: any nearby action is semi-conjugate to the standard boundary action.

Abstract:Let $(M,g_0)$ be a closed oriented hyperbolic manifold of dimension at least $3$. By the volume entropy inequality of G. Besson, G. Courtois and S. Gallot, for any Riemannian metric $g$ on $M$ with same volume as $g_0$, its volume entropy $h(g)$ satisfies $h(g)\geq n-1$ with equality only when $g$ is isometric to $g_0$. We show that the hyperbolic metric $g_0$ is stable in the following sense: if $g_i$ is a sequence of Riemaniann metrics on $M$ of same volume as $g_0$ and if $h(g_i)$ converges to $n-1$, then there are smooth subsets $Z_i\subset M$ such that both $\mathrm{Vol}(Z_i,g_i)$ and $\mathrm{Area}(\partial Z_i,g_i)$ tend to $0$, and $(M\setminus Z_i,g_i)$ converges to $(M,g_0)$ in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology. The proof relies on showing that any spherical Plateau solution for $M$ is intrinsically isomorphic to $(M,\frac{(n-1)^2}{4n} g_0)$.

Hyperbolic groups and spherical minimal surfaces

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed, oriented, negatively curved, $n$-dimensional manifold with fundamental group $\Gamma$. Let $S^\infty$ be the unit sphere in $\ell^2(\Gamma)$, on which $\Gamma$ acts by the regular representation. The spherical volume of $M$ is a topological invariant introduced by Besson-Courtois-Gallot. We show that it is equal to the area of an $n$-dimensional area-minimizing minimal surface inside the ultralimit of $S^\infty/\Gamma$, in the sense of Ambrosio-Kirchheim. Our proof combines the theory of metric currents with a study of limits of the regular representation of torsion-free hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:This article is concerned with boundary stabilization of one-dimensional linear hyperbolic systems with characteristic boundaries. We assume that the systems satisfy a physically relevant structural stability condition for hyperbolic relaxation problems, which describe various non-equilibrium phenomena. By introducing new and simple Lyapunov functions, the structural stability condition is used to derive stabilization results for problems with characteristic boundaries. The result is illustrated with an application to the transport of neurofilaments in axons—a phenomenon studied in neuroscience.
Homological Stability for Spaces of Subsurfaces with Tangential Structure

Abstract:Given a manifold with boundary, one can consider the space of subsurfaces of this manifold meeting the boundary in a prescribed fashion. It is known that these spaces of subsurfaces satisfy homological stability if the manifold has at least dimension five and is simply-connected. We introduce a notion of tangential structure for subsurfaces and give a general criterion for when the space of subsurfaces with tangential structure satisfies homological stability provided that the manifold is simply-connected and has dimension $n\geq 5$. Examples of tangential structures such that the spaces of subsurface with that tangential structure satisfy homological stability are framings or spin structures of their tangent bundle, or $k$-frames of the normal bundle provided that $k\leq n-2$. Furthermore we introduce spaces of pointedly embedded subsurfaces and construct stabilization maps, as well as prove homological stability for these. This is used to prove homological stability for spaces of symplectic subsurfaces.

Abstract:Given an embedded stable hypersurface in a four-dimensional symplectic manifold, we prove that it is stable isotopic to a $C^0$-close stable hypersurface with the following property: $C^\infty$-nearby hypersurfaces are generically unstable. This shows that the stability property is neither open nor generic, independently of the isotopy class of hypersurfaces and ambient symplectic manifold. The proof combines tools from stable Hamiltonian topology with techniques in three-dimensional dynamics such as partial sections, integrability and KAM theory. On our way, we establish non-density properties of Reeb-like flows and a generic non-integrability theorem for cohomologous Hamiltonian structures and volume-preserving fields in dimension three.

Boundaries of open symplectic manifolds and the failure of packing stability

Abstract:A finite volume symplectic manifold is said to have "packing stability" if the only obstruction to symplectically embedding sufficiently small balls is the volume obstruction. Packing stability has been shown in a variety of cases and it has been conjectured that it always holds. We give counterexamples to this conjecture; in fact, we give examples that cannot be fully packed by any domain with smooth boundary nor by any convex domain. The examples are symplectomorphic to open and bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^4$, with the diffeomorphism type of a disc. The obstruction to packing stability is closely tied to another old question, which asks to what extent an open symplectic manifold has a well-defined boundary; it follows from our results that many examples cannot be symplectomorphic to the interior of a compact symplectic manifold with smooth boundary. Our results can be quantified in terms of the volume decay near the boundary, and we produce, for example, smooth toric domains that are only symplectomorphic to the interior of a compact domain if the boundary of this domain has inner Minkowski dimension arbitrarily close to $4$. The growth rate of the subleading asymptotics of the ECH spectrum plays a key role in our arguments. We prove a very general "fractal Weyl law", relating this growth rate to the Minkowski dimension; this formula is potentially of independent interest.

Abstract:We study isometric actions of compact Lie groups on complete orientable positively curved $n$-manifolds whose orbit spaces have non-empty boundary in the sense of Alexandrov geometry. In particular, we classify quotients of the unit sphere by actions of compact simple Lie groups with non-empty boundary. We deduce from this the list of representations of compact simple Lie groups that admit non-trivial reductions. As a tool of special interest, we introduce a new geometric invariant of a compact symmetric space, namely, the minimal number of points in a "spanning set" of the space.

Abstract:We consider a range of geometric stability problems for hypersurfaces of spaceforms. One of the key results is an estimate relating the distance to a geodesic sphere of an embedded hypersurface with integral norms of the traceless Hessian operator of a level set function for the open set bounded by the hypersurface. As application, we give a unified treatment of many old and new stability problems arising in geometry and analysis. Those problems ask for spherical closeness of a hypersurface, given a geometric constraint. Examples include stability in Alexandroff's soap bubble theorem in space forms, Serrin's overdetermined problem, a Steklov problem involving the bi-Laplace operator and non-convex Alexandroff–Fenchel inequalities.

Abstract:Llarull's theorem characterizes the round sphere $S^n$ among all spin manifolds whose scalar curvature is bounded from below by $n(n-1)$. In this paper we show that if the scalar curvature is bounded from below by $n(n-1)-\varepsilon$, the underlying manifold is $C^0$-close to a finite number of spheres outside a small bad set. This completely solves Gromov's spherical stability problem.

Abstract:We prove that, in a Euclidean domain bounded by hyperplanes having linearly independent normals, a connected oriented compact immersed stable capillary hypersurface $M^n$ disjoint from the edges of the domain and with the contact angles belonging to $[\pi /2,\pi ]$ must be part of a sphere, if $\partial M$ is embedded for $n=2$, or $\partial M$ is convex in the hyperplane for $n\ge 3$. By applying a similar argument, we also discuss two other cases where a stable capillary hypersurface must be part of a sphere.

Abstract:Abstract This paper is devoted to the discussion of the exponential stability of a networked hyperbolic system with a circle. Our analysis extends an example by Bastin and Coron about the limits of boundary stabilizability of hyperbolic systems to the case of a networked system that is defined on a graph which contains a cycle. By spectral analysis, we prove that the system is stabilizable while the length of the arcs is sufficiently small. However, if the length of the arcs is too large, the system is not stabilizable. Our results are robust with respect to small perturbations of the arc lengths. Complementing our analysis, we provide numerical simulations that illustrate our findings.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a stability problem of free boundary hypersurfaces, and also capillary ones whose boundary supported on a horosphere in hyperbolic space. We prove that umbilical hypersurfaces are only stable immersed capillary hypersurfaces whose boundary supported on a horosphere. Using the same method, we show that a totally geodesic hyperplane is only stable immersed type-II hypersurface whose boundary supported on a horosphere.

Entropy Stability for products of negatively curved symmetric spaces

Abstract:Let $(M,g_0)$ be a closed oriented $n$-manifold that is locally isometric to a product $(X^{n_1}_1,g_1)\times\cdots (X_k^{n_k},g_k)$, where each $n_i\ge 3,$ and each factor $(X_i^{n_i},g_i)$ is a negatively curved symmetric space. We study the stability of minimal entropy rigidity for such manifolds. Specifically, we consider whether an entropy-minimizing sequence $(M,g_i)$ converges to the model space in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff sense after removing negligible subsets. Previously, Song [Son23] established this type of stability for negatively curved symmetric spaces, where both the $n$-volume of the removed subsets and the $(n-1)$-volume of their boundaries converge to zero. We construct a counterexample demonstrating that this stronger stability notion does not generally hold in the product case; in particular, the condition that the $(n-1)$-volume of the boundary of removed subsets converges to zero cannot be imposed. Nonetheless, we prove that an entropy-minimizing sequence $(M,g_i)$ converges to the model space after removing subsets whose $n$-volume converges to zero in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology. This result provides a weaker form of stability compared to the negatively symmetric case. A key ingredient in establishing this stability is our proof of the intrinsic uniqueness of the spherical Plateau solution for products of negatively curved symmetric spaces, which is of independent interest.

Manhattan geodesics and the boundary of the space of metric structures on hyperbolic groups

Abstract:For any non-elementary hyperbolic group $\Gamma$, we find an outer automorphism invariant geodesic bicombing for the space of metric structures on $\Gamma$ equipped with a symmetrized version of the Thurston metric on Techimüller space. We construct and study a boundary for this space and show that it contains many well-known pseudo metrics including those coming from actions on $\text{CAT}(0)$ cube complexes, real trees and coned-off Cayley graphs. As corollaries we deduce length spectrum rigidity results, regularity results for Manhattan curves, optimal growth rate results for Anosov representations and results regarding continuous extensions of translation distance functions to the space of geodesic currents. Using our results for geodesic currents we settle a conjecture of Bonahon in the negative.

Abstract:We consider actions of cocompact lattices in semisimple Lie groups of the noncompact type on their boundaries $G/Q$, $Q$ a parabolic group, the so-called standard actions. We show that perturbations of the standard action in the homeomorphism group continuously factor onto the original standard action by a semi-conjugacy close to the identity. This generalizes works by Bowden, Mann, Manning and Weisman in the setting of negative curvature or Gromov hyperbolic groups. Finally, we also construct perturbations of the action of lattices on the geodesic boundary which are not $C^0$ semi-conjugate to the original action.

On the stability of Killing cylinders in hyperbolic space

Abstract:In this paper we study the stability of a Killing cylinder in hyperbolic 3-space when regarded as a capillary surface for the partitioning problem. In contrast with the Euclidean case, we consider a variety of totally umbilical support surfaces, including horospheres, totally geodesic planes, equidistant surfaces and round spheres. In all of them, we explicitly compute the Morse index of the corresponding eigenvalue problem for the Jacobi operator. We also address the stability of compact pieces of Killing cylinders with Dirichlet boundary conditions when the boundary is formed by two fixed circles, exhibiting an analogous to the Plateau-Rayleigh instability criterion for Killing cylinders in the Euclidean space. Finally, we prove that the Delaunay surfaces can be obtained by bifurcating Killing cylinders supported on geodesic planes.
