Abstract:We consider a family of vectorial models for cohesive fracture, which may incorporate -invariance. The deformation belongs to the space of generalized functions of bounded variation and the energy contains an (elastic) volume energy, an opening-dependent jump energy concentrated on the fractured surface, and a Cantor part representing diffuse damage. We show that this type of functional can be naturally obtained as -limit of an appropriate phase-field model. The energy densities entering the limiting functional can be expressed, in a partially implicit way, in terms of those appearing in the phase-field approximation.

Convergence of critical points for a phase-field approximation of 1D cohesive fracture energies

Abstract:Variational models for cohesive fracture are based on the idea that the fracture energy is released gradually as the crack opening grows. Recently, [Conti, Focardi, and Iurlano, Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré C Anal. Non Linéaire, 2016] proposed a variational approximation via $\Gamma$-convergence of a class of cohesive fracture energies by phase-field energies of Ambrosio-Tortorelli type, which may be also used as regularization for numerical simulations. In this paper we address the question of the asymptotic behaviour of critical points of the phase-field energies in the one-dimensional setting: we show that they converge to a selected class of critical points of the limit functional. Conversely, each critical point in this class can be approximated by a family of critical points of the phase-field functionals.

An elliptic approximation for phase separation in a fractured material

Abstract:We consider a free-boundary and free-discontinuity energy connecting phase separation and fracture in an elastic material. The energy excludes the contribution of phase boundaries in the cracked region, providing a heuristic approximation of the interfacial energy in the current material configuration. Our primary result shows that the sharp energy may be recovered via Gamma-convergence from a modified Cahn-Hilliard energy coupled with an Ambrosio-Tortorelli-type approximation of the (linear) elastic and fracture energy.

Abstract:We address brittle fracture in anisotropic materials featuring two-fold and four-fold symmetric fracture toughness. For these two classes, we develop two variational phase-field models based on the family of regularizations proposed by Focardi (2001), for which Γ -convergence results hold. Since both models are of second order, as opposed to the previously available fourth-order models for four-fold symmetric fracture toughness, they do not require basis functions of C 1 -continuity nor mixed variational principles for finite element discretization. For the four-fold symmetric formulation we show that the standard quadratic degradation function is unsuitable and devise a procedure to derive a suitable one. The performance of the new models is assessed via several numerical examples that simulate anisotropic fracture under anti-plane shear loading. For both formulations at fixed displacements (i.e. within an alternate minimization procedure), we also provide some existence and uniqueness results for the phase-field solution.

Abstract:The evolution of brittle fracture in a material can be conveniently investigated by means of the phase-field technique introducing a smooth crack density functional. Following Borden et al. (2014) , two distinct types of phase-field functional are considered: (i) a second-order model and (ii) a fourth-order one. The latter approach involves the bi-Laplacian of the phase field and therefore the resulting Galerkin form requires continuously differentiable basis functions: a condition we easily fulfill via Isogeometric Analysis. In this work, we provide an extensive comparison of the considered formulations performing several tests that progressively increase the complexity of the crack patterns. To measure the fracture length necessary in our accuracy evaluations, we propose an image-based algorithm that features an automatic skeletonization technique able to track complex fracture patterns. In all numerical results, damage irreversibility is handled in a straightforward and rigorous manner using the Projected Successive Over-Relaxation algorithm that is suitable to be adopted for both phase-field formulations since it can be used in combination with higher continuity isogeometric discretizations. Based on our results, the fourth-order approach provides higher rates of convergence and a greater accuracy. Moreover, we observe that fourth- and second-order models exhibit a comparable accuracy when the former methods employ a mesh-size approximately two times larger, entailing a substantial reduction of the computational effort.

Abstract:Phase-field models of brittle fracture are typically endowed with a decomposition of the elastic strain energy density in order to realistically describe fracture under multi-axial stress states. In this contribution, we identify the essential requirements for this decomposition to correctly describe both nucleation and propagation of cracks. Discussing the evolution of the elastic domains in the strain and stress spaces as damage evolves, we highlight the links between the nucleation and propagation conditions and the modulation of the elastic energy with the phase-field variable. In light of the identified requirements, we review some of the existing energy decompositions, showcasing their merits and limitations, and conclude that none of them is able to fulfil all requirements. As a partial remedy to this outcome, we propose a new energy decomposition, denoted as star-convex model, which involves a minimal modification of the volumetric-deviatoric decomposition. Predictions of the star-convex model are compared with those of the existing models with different numerical tests encompassing both nucleation and propagation.

Abstract:A novel variational framework to model the fatigue behavior of brittle materials based on a phase-field approach to fracture is presented. The standard regularized free energy functional is modified introducing a fatigue degradation function that effectively reduces the fracture toughness as a proper history variable accumulates. This macroscopic approach allows to reproduce the main known features of fatigue crack growth in brittle materials. Numerical experiments show that the Wöhler curve, the crack growth rate curve and the Paris law are naturally recovered, while the approximate Palmgren-Miner criterion and the monotonic loading condition are obtained as special cases.

Abstract:We develop a phase-field approximation of the relaxation of the perimeter functional in the plane under a connectedness constraint based on the classical Modica-Mortola functional and the connectedness constraint of (Dondl, Lemenant, Wojtowytsch 2017). We prove convergence of the approximating energies and present numerical results and applications to image segmentation.

Abstract:Damage gradient models approximate fracture mechanics using a modulation of the material stiffness. To this aim a single scalar field, the damage, is used to degrade as a whole the elastic energy. If applied to the structural models of beams and shells, where the elastic energy is the sum of the stretching and bending contributions, a similar approach is not able to capture some important features. For instance, the coupling between axial and bending strains induced by cracks non-symmetric with respect to the center line is completely missed. In this contribution, we deduce a constitutive law for a beam having a crack non-symmetric with respect to the center line. To achieve this, we perform an asymptotic coarse-grained procedure from a 2D problem, using a sharp interface model. We deduce a homogenized 1D elastic energy, coupling the axial and bending strains, the constitutive parameters of which depend in a different way on the crack depth and we state how precisely they do. This should pave the way to a rational development of a phase-field gradient model for thin structures.

Abstract:This paper presents a phase-field model for cohesive-frictional shear fracture. The model is derived based on two energetic principles: the energy conservation law and a variational inequality of virtual work that serves as a stability condition. We show that all the governing equations for frictional fracture can be obtained from the above two principles, including the equilibrium condition, the phase-field evolution law and, most importantly, the yield function and flow rule for the plasticity-like frictional slip. The information of crack direction is naturally included in the flow rule. Theoretical and numerical results show that the proposed model is faithfully consistent with the Mohr–Coulomb theory of frictional failure in terms of the crack nucleation stress and direction. In addition, the presented phase-field model has an explicit frictional cohesive law.

Abstract:We propose a new Cahn-Hilliard phase field model coupled to incompressible viscoelasticity at large strains, obtained from a diffuse interface mixture model and formulated in the Eulerian configuration. A new kind of diffusive regularization, of Allen-Cahn type, is introduced in the transport equation for the deformation gradient, together with a regularizing interface term depending on the gradient of the deformation gradient in the free energy of the system. We study the global existence of a weak solution for the model. While standard diffusive regularizations of the transport equation for the deformation gradient presented in literature allows the existence study only for simplified cases, i.e. in two space dimensions and for convex elastic free energy densities of Neo-Hookean type which are independent from the phase field variable, the present regularization allows to study more general cases. In particular, we obtain the global existence of a weak solution in three space dimensions and for generic nonlinear elastic energy densities with polynomial growth. Our analysis considers elastic free energy densities which depend on the phase field variable and which can possibly degenerate for some values of the phase field variable. By means of an iterative argument based on elliptic regularity bootstrap steps, we find the maximum allowed polynomial growths of the Cahn-Hilliard potential and the elastic energy density which guarantee the existence of a solution in three space dimensions. We propose two unconditionally energy stable finite element approximations of the model, based on convex splitting ideas and on the use of a scalar auxiliary variable, proving the existence and stability of discrete solutions. We finally report numerical results for different test cases with shape memory alloy type free energy with pure phases characterized by different elastic properties.

Abstract:In this contribution, a variational diffuse modeling framework for cracks in heterogeneous media is presented. A static order parameter smoothly bridges the discontinuity at material interfaces, while an evolving phase-field captures the regularized crack. The key novelty is the combination of a strain energy split with a partial rank-I relaxation in the vicinity of the diffuse interface. The former is necessary to account for physically meaningful crack kinematics like crack closure, the latter ensures the mechanical jump conditions throughout the diffuse region. The model is verified by a convergence study, where a circular bi-material disc with and without a crack is subjected to radial loads. For the uncracked case, analytical solutions are taken as reference. In a second step, the model is applied to crack propagation, where a meaningful influence on crack branching is observed, that underlines the necessity of a reasonable homogenization scheme. The presented model is particularly relevant for the combination of any variational strain energy split in the fracture phase-field model with a diffuse modeling approach for material heterogeneities.

Navigating with Stability: Local Minima, Patterns, and Evolution in a Gradient Damage Fracture Model

Abstract:In phase-field theories of brittle fracture, crack initiation, growth and path selection are investigated using non-convex energy functionals and a stability criterion. The lack of convexity with respect to the state poses difficulties to monolithic solvers that aim to solve for kinematic and internal variables, simultaneously. In this paper, we inquire into the effectiveness of quasi-Newton algorithms as an alternative to conventional Newton-Raphson solvers. These algorithms improve convergence by constructing a positive definite approximation of the Hessian, bargaining improved convergence with the risk of missing bifurcation points and stability thresholds. Our study focuses on one-dimensional phase-field fracture models of brittle thin films on elastic foundations. Within this framework, in the absence of irreversibility constraint, we construct an equilibrium map that represents all stable and unstable equilibrium states as a function of the external load, using well-known branch-following bifurcation techniques. Our main finding is that quasi-Newton algorithms fail to select stable evolution paths without exact second variation information. To solve this issue, we perform a spectral analysis of the full Hessian, providing optimal perturbations that enable quasi-Newton methods to follow a stable and potentially unique path for crack evolution. Finally, we discuss the stability issues and optimal perturbations in the case when the damage irreversibility is present, changing the topological structure of the set of admissible perturbations from a linear vector space to a convex cone.

Energy Relations in the Phase Field Approach to Fracture

Abstract:The phase field approach to fracture originates from the variational formulation of brittle fracture proposed by Francfort and Marigo.The regularized version of the latter formulation by Bourdin et al. is also dubbed the phase field approach to fracture.Compared with explicit crack methods such as the extended finite element method, the phase field approach to fracture does not require additional criteria for crack simulation and can naturally simulate complex fracture behaviors such as crack initiation, propagation, branching and merging with a fixed mesh and fixed shape functions.This work examines the energy relations in the phase field approach to fracture.First, the relation of the elastic potential energy and the fracture energy is revisited from the Γ-convergence point of view.Second, the energy balance relation is carefully investigated from the thermodynamic perspective.For this both the first law of thermodynamics and the second law of thermodynamics are considered, and the role of the degradation function and the asymmetric relation for distinguishing tension and compression will be reviewed.Finally, some existing phase field models for fracture are evaluated based on the energy relations.Some popular models will be shown not to always obey thermodynamic laws.With this opportunity, some of the recent works of our research group are showcased from the energy perspective.
Phase-Field Modeling of Crack Branching and Deflection in Heterogeneous Media

Abstract:This contribution presents a diffuse framework for modeling cracks in heterogeneous media. Interfaces are depicted by static phase-fields. This concept allows the use of non-conforming meshes. Another phase-field is used to describe the crack evolution in a regularized manner. The interface modeling implements two combined approaches. Firstly, a method from the literature is extended where the interface is incorporated by a local reduction of the fracture toughness. Secondly, variations of the elastic properties across the interface are enabled by approximating the abrupt change between two adjacent subdomains using a hyperbolic tangent function, which alters the elastic material parameters accordingly. The approach is validated qualitatively by means of crack patterns and quantitatively with respect to critical energy release rates with fundamental analytical results from Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, where a crack impinges an arbitrarily oriented interface and either branches, gets deflected or experiences no interfacial influence. The model is particularly relevant for phase-field analyses in heterogeneous, possibly complex-shaped solids, where cohesive failure in the constituent materials as well as adhesive failure at interfaces and its quantification play a role.

Abstract:This work develops a variational framework with dissipation for deriving governing equations in the phase-field cohesive fracture theory. We show that a phase-field model consistent with cohesive zone theory can be established on only two physical foundations. One of them is the law of energy conservation and the other is a variational inequality of virtual works which serves as a stability condition. The proposed phase-field model can implement a mixed-mode cohesive law of arbitrary form. The mode-dependent fracture toughness and direction-dependent crack driving force in a general cohesive fracture can be taken into account in a unified manner. Since brittle fracture can be viewed as an extreme case of cohesive fracture, the newly proposed method is also applicable to brittle fracture. Three numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented method, including a uniaxial tension test, a mixed-mode fracture of concrete and a compressive failure of rock with flaws. In the first example, the numerical cohesive law is extracted and compared with the target analytical cohesive law. Excellent agreement is observed. In the last two examples, the crack morphology and mechanical response predicted by the model are in excellent agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:In this manuscript, the phase-field fracture irreversibility constraint is transformed into an equality-based constraint using the slack variable approach. The equality-based fracture irreversibility constraint is then introduced in the phase-field fracture energy functional using the Lagrange Multiplier Method and the Penalty method. Both methods are variationally consistent with the conventional variational inequality phase-field fracture problem, unlike the history-variable approach. Thereafter, numerical experiments are carried out on benchmark problems in brittle and quasi-brittle fracture to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.

Abstract:Fracture of viscoelastic solids plays an important role in many applications but it is not yet well understood. In addition to the time and rate dependent response of viscoelastic materials, fracture of these solids is governed by nonlinear processes at the fracture process zone and could also be accelerated by viscous energy dissipation. To this end, we propose a new phase field formulation in which fracture of viscoelastic solids is driven by both elastic and viscous components of the energy. The formulation requires a single additional parameter to quantify the portion of the viscous energy that contributes to fracture and is shown to be thermodynamically consistent. Viscoelastic material behavior, in the form of a Generalized Maxwell model, is obtained through a standard Prony-series type expansion. Fracture driven by viscous dissipation is studied on several important benchmark problems, including (i) a bar under creep, relaxation, strain rate and cyclic loadings, and (ii) two 3-point asphalt-beam bending problems that lead to crack propagation under mode I and mixed mode conditions. It is shown that at low strain rates viscous dissipation accelerates the fracture growth rate but essentially does not affect the crack path, while at high rates the effect of viscous dissipation is minor.

Abstract:Phase-field approaches to fracture based on energy minimization principles have been rapidly gaining popularity in recent years, and are particularly well-suited for simulating crack initiation and growth in complex fracture networks. In the phase-field framework, the surface energy associated with crack formation is calculated by evaluating a functional defined in terms of a scalar order parameter and its gradients. These in turn describe the fractures in a diffuse sense following a prescribed regularization length scale. Imposing stationarity of the total energy leads to a coupled system of partial differential equations that enforce stress equilibrium and govern phase-field evolution. These equations are coupled through an energy degradation function that models the loss of stiffness in the bulk material as it undergoes damage. In the present work, we introduce a new parametric family of degradation functions aimed at increasing the accuracy of phase-field models in predicting critical loads associated with crack nucleation as well as the propagation of existing fractures. An additional goal is the preservation of linear elastic response in the bulk material prior to fracture. Through the analysis of several numerical examples, we demonstrate the superiority of the proposed family of functions to the classical quadratic degradation function that is used most often in the literature.
