Abstract:Chalcogenide perovskites have emerged as non-toxic and stable photovoltaic materials, acting as an alternative to lead halide hybrid perovskites having similar optoelectronic properties. In the present work, we report the electronic and optical properties of chalcogenide perovskites AZrS$_3$ (A=Ca, Sr, Ba) by using the density functional theory (DFT) and many-body perturbation theory (MBPT viz. G$_0$W$_0$ and BSE). This study includes excitonic analysis for the aforementioned systems. The exciton binding energy (E$_\textrm{B}$) is found to be larger than that of the halide perovskites, as the ionic contribution to dielectric screening is negligible in the former. We also observe a more stable charge-separated polaronic state as compared to that of the bound exciton. Finally, on the basis of direct gap and absorption coefficient, the estimated spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency (SLME) of the solar cells is large and suggests the applicability of these perovskites in photovoltaics.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the electronic and optical properties of chalcogenide perovskites AZrS₃ (A = Ca, Sr, Ba), especially to study the exciton characteristics of these materials through density - functional theory (DFT) and many - body perturbation theory (MBPT, such as G⁰W⁰ and BSE methods). Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Electronic structure**: Use DFT and the hybrid exchange - correlation functional HSE06 to optimize the crystal structure and calculate the atom - projected partial density of states (pDOS) in order to understand the electronic structure of these materials. 2. **Optical properties**: Solve the contribution of electron pairs to the dielectric function by using the Bethe - Salpeter equation (BSE) in MBPT, and study the contribution of ions to the dielectric function through density - functional perturbation theory (DFPT), so as to fully understand the optical properties of these materials. 3. **Exciton binding energy**: Calculate the exciton binding energies (\(E_B\)) of different chalcogenide perovskites and compare them with lead halide perovskites. It is found that their exciton binding energies are relatively large, which may be related to the relatively small contribution of ion - pair dielectric screening in these materials. 4. **Spectral - limited maximum efficiency (SLME)**: Based on the direct band gap and absorption coefficient, calculate the theoretical maximum photoelectric conversion efficiency (SLME) of these chalcogenide perovskites as solar cell materials. The results show that these materials have potential in photovoltaic applications. In conclusion, through systematic research, the paper aims to provide a theoretical basis and experimental guidance for the application of chalcogenide perovskites in optoelectronic devices, especially in solar cells.
