Abstract:CSG trees are an intuitive, yet powerful technique for the representation of geometry using a combination of Boolean set-operations and geometric primitives. In general, there exists an infinite number of trees all describing the same 3D solid. However, some trees are optimal regarding the number of used operations, their shape or other attributes, like their suitability for intuitive, human-controlled editing. In this paper, we present a systematic comparison of newly developed and existing tree optimization methods and propose a flexible processing pipeline with a focus on tree editability. The pipeline uses a redundancy removal and decomposition stage for complexity reduction and different (meta-)heuristics for remaining tree optimization. We also introduce a new quantitative measure for CSG tree editability and show how it can be used as a constraint in the optimization process.

Abstract:The goal of this document is to survey existing methods for recovering CSG representations from unstructured data such as 3D point-clouds or polygon meshes. We review and discuss related topics such as the segmentation and fitting of the input data. We cover techniques from solid modeling and CAD for polyhedron to CSG and B-rep to CSG conversion. We look at approaches coming from program synthesis, evolutionary techniques (such as genetic programming or genetic algorithm), and deep learning methods. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of techniques for the generation of computer programs representing solids (not just CSG models) and higher-level representations (such as, for example, the ones based on sketch and extrusion or feature based operations).

Abstract:Reconstructing CSG trees from CAD models is a critical subject in reverse engineering. While there have been notable advancements in CSG reconstruction, challenges persist in capturing geometric details and achieving efficiency. Additionally, since non-axis-aligned volumetric primitives cannot maintain coplanar characteristics due to discretization errors, existing Boolean operations often lead to zero-volume surfaces and suffer from topological errors during the CSG modeling process. To address these issues, we propose a novel workflow to achieve fast CSG reconstruction and reliable forward modeling. First, we employ feature removal and model subdivision techniques to decompose models into sub-components. This significantly expedites the reconstruction by simplifying the complexity of the models. Then, we introduce a more reasonable method for primitive generation and filtering, and utilize a size-related optimization approach to reconstruct CSG trees. By re-adding features as additional nodes in the CSG trees, our method not only preserves intricate details but also ensures the conciseness, semantic integrity, and editability of the resulting CSG tree. Finally, we develop a coplanar primitive discretization method that represents primitives as large planes and extracts the original triangles after intersection. We extend the classification of triangles and incorporate a coplanar-aware Boolean tree assessment technique, allowing us to achieve manifold and watertight modeling results without zero-volume surfaces, even in extreme degenerate cases. We demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art approaches. Moreover, the reconstructed CSG trees generated by our method contain extensive semantic information, enabling diverse model editing tasks.

Abstract:Signed distance field (SDF) is a prominent implicit representation of 3D meshes. Methods that are based on such representation achieved state-of-the-art 3D shape reconstruction quality. However, these methods struggle to reconstruct non-convex shapes. One remedy is to incorporate a constructive solid geometry framework (CSG) that represents a shape as a decomposition into primitives. It allows to embody a 3D shape of high complexity and non-convexity with a simple tree representation of Boolean operations. Nevertheless, existing approaches are supervised and require the entire CSG parse tree that is given upfront during the training process. On the contrary, we propose a model that extracts a CSG parse tree without any supervision - UCSG-Net. Our model predicts parameters of primitives and binarizes their SDF representation through differentiable indicator function. It is achieved jointly with discovering the structure of a Boolean operators tree. The model selects dynamically which operator combination over primitives leads to the reconstruction of high fidelity. We evaluate our method on 2D and 3D autoencoding tasks. We show that the predicted parse tree representation is interpretable and can be used in CAD software.
Point containment algorithms for constructive solid geometry with unbounded primitives

Abstract:We present several algorithms for evaluating point containment in constructive solid geometry (CSG) trees with unbounded primitives. Three algorithms are presented based on postfix, prefix, and infix notations of the CSG binary expression tree. We show that prefix and infix notations enable short-circuiting logic, which reduces the number of primitives that must be checked during point containment. To evaluate the performance of the algorithms, each algorithm was implemented in the OpenMC Monte Carlo particle transport code, which relies on CSG to represent solid bodies through which subatomic particles travel. Two sets of tests were carried out. First, the execution time to generate a high-resolution rasterized image of a 2D slice of a detailed CSG model of the ITER tokamak was measured. Use of both prefix and infix notations offered significant speedup over the postfix notation that has traditionally been used in particle transport codes, with infix resulting in a 6$\times$ reduction in execution time relative to postfix. We then measured the execution time of neutron transport simulations of the same ITER model using each of the algorithms. The results and performance improvements reveal the same trends as for the rasterization test, with a 4.59$\times$ overall speedup using the infix notation relative to the original postfix notation in OpenMC.

Accelerating Evolutionary Construction Tree Extraction via Graph Partitioning

Abstract:Extracting a Construction Tree from potentially noisy point clouds is an important aspect of Reverse Engineering tasks in Computer Aided Design. Solutions based on algorithmic geometry impose constraints on usable model representations (e.g. quadric surfaces only) and noise robustness. Re-formulating the problem as a combinatorial optimization problem and solving it with an Evolutionary Algorithm can mitigate some of these constraints at the cost of increased computational complexity. This paper proposes a graph-based search space partitioning scheme that is able to accelerate Evolutionary Construction Tree extraction while exploiting parallelization capabilities of modern CPUs. The evaluation indicates a speed-up up to a factor of $46.6$ compared to the baseline approach while resulting tree sizes increased by $25.2\%$ to $88.6\%$.

Abstract:The continuous development of new commodity hardware intended to capture the surface structure of objects is quickly making point cloud data ubiquitous. Scene understanding methods address the problem of determining the objects present in a point cloud which, dependant on sensor capabilities and object occlusions, is normally noisy and incomplete. In this paper, we propose a novel technique which enables automatic identiﬁcation of semantically meaningful structures within point clouds acquired using different sensors on a variety of scenes. The representation model, namely the structure graph, with nodes representing planar surface segments, is computed over these point clouds to help with the identiﬁcation task. In order to accommodate for more complex objects (e.g. chair, couch, cabinet, table), a training process is used to determine and concisely describe, within each object’s structure graph, its important shape characteristics. Results on a variety of point clouds show how our method can quickly discern certain object types.

Abstract:The Diameter-bounded max-Coverage Group Steiner Tree (DCGST) problem has recently been proposed as an expressive way of formulating keyword-based search and exploration of knowledge graphs. It aims at finding a diameter-bounded tree which covers the most given groups of vertices and has the minimum weight. In contrast to its specialization—the classic Group Steiner Tree (GST) problem which has been extensively studied, the emerging DCGST problem still lacks an efficient algorithm. In this paper, we propose Cba, the first approximation algorithm for the DCGST problem, and we prove its worst-case approximation ratio. Furthermore, we incorporate a best-first search strategy with two pruning methods into PrunedCBA, an improved approximation algorithm. Our extensive experiments on real and synthetic graphs demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of PrunedCBA.
Exact predicates, exact constructions and combinatorics for mesh CSG

Abstract:This article introduces a general mesh intersection algorithm that exactly computes the so-called Weiler model and that uses it to implement boolean operations with arbitrary multi-operand expressions, CSG (constructive solid geometry) and some mesh repair operations. From an input polygon soup, the algorithm first computes the co-refinement, with an exact representation of the intersection points. Then, the decomposition of 3D space into volumetric regions (Weiler model) is constructed, by sorting the facets around the non-manifold intersection edges (radial sort), using specialized exact predicates. Finally, based on the input boolean expression, the triangular facets that belong to the boundary of the result are classified. This is, to our knowledge, the first algorithm that computes an exact Weiler model. To implement all the involved predicates and constructions, two geometric kernels are proposed, tested and discussed (arithmetic expansions and multi-precision floating-point). As a guiding principle,the combinatorial information shared between each step is kept as simple as possible. It is made possible by treating all the particular cases in the kernel. In particular, triangles with intersections are remeshed using the (uniquely defined) Constrained Delaunay Triangulation, with symbolic perturbations to disambiguate configurations with co-cyclic points. It makes it easy to discard the duplicated triangles that appear when remeshing overlapping facets. The method is tested and compared with previous work, on the existing "thingi10K" dataset (to test co-refinement and mesh repair) and on a new "thingiCSG" dataset made publicly available (to test the full CSG pipeline) on a variety of interesting examples featuring different types of "pathologies"

GCS*: Forward Heuristic Search on Implicit Graphs of Convex Sets

Abstract:We consider large-scale, implicit-search-based solutions to Shortest Path Problems on Graphs of Convex Sets (GCS). We propose GCS*, a forward heuristic search algorithm that generalizes A* search to the GCS setting, where a continuous-valued decision is made at each graph vertex, and constraints across graph edges couple these decisions, influencing costs and feasibility. Such mixed discrete-continuous planning is needed in many domains, including motion planning around obstacles and planning through contact. This setting provides a unique challenge for best-first search algorithms: the cost and feasibility of a path depend on continuous-valued points chosen along the entire path. We show that by pruning paths that are cost-dominated over their entire terminal vertex, GCS* can search efficiently while still guaranteeing cost-optimality and completeness. To find satisficing solutions quickly, we also present a complete but suboptimal variation, pruning instead reachability-dominated paths. We implement these checks using polyhedral-containment or sampling-based methods. The former implementation is complete and cost-optimal, while the latter is probabilistically complete and asymptotically cost-optimal and performs effectively even with minimal samples in practice. We demonstrate GCS* on planar pushing tasks where the combinatorial explosion of contact modes renders prior methods intractable and show it performs favorably compared to the state-of-the-art. Abstract:This paper presented single task coalition structure generation(STCSG) algorithm to generate optimal single task coalition structure.It used CSGs model and hypergraph to generate skill hypergraph.According to the optimal coalition structure characteristics of STSG,specifically in both cases when each agent had only one skill and a skill was at most shared by two agent,it discussed the search strategy of skill hypergraph to obtain the optimal coalition structure.Experimental results show that search efficiency of the algorithm is high,and the time complexity is O(n2).
On Steiner Trees of the Regular Simplex

Abstract:In the Euclidean Steiner Tree problem, we are given as input a set of points (called terminals) in the $\ell_2$-metric space and the goal is to find the minimum-cost tree connecting them. Additional points (called Steiner points) from the space can be introduced as nodes in the solution. The seminal works of Arora [JACM'98] and Mitchell [SICOMP'99] provide a Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme (PTAS) for solving the Euclidean Steiner Tree problem in fixed dimensions. However, the problem remains poorly understood in higher dimensions (such as when the dimension is logarithmic in the number of terminals) and ruling out a PTAS for the problem in high dimensions is a notoriously long standing open problem (for example, see Trevisan [SICOMP'00]). Moreover, the explicit construction of optimal Steiner trees remains unknown for almost all well-studied high-dimensional point configurations. Furthermore, a vast majority the state-of-the-art structural results on (high-dimensional) Euclidean Steiner trees were established in the 1960s, with no noteworthy update in over half a century. In this paper, we revisit high-dimensional Euclidean Steiner trees, proving new structural results. We also establish a link between the computational hardness of the Euclidean Steiner Tree problem and understanding the optimal Steiner trees of regular simplices (and simplicial complexes), proposing several conjectures and showing that some of them suffice to resolve the status of the inapproximability of the Euclidean Steiner Tree problem. Motivated by this connection, we investigate optimal Steiner trees of regular simplices, proving new structural properties of their optimal Steiner trees, revisiting an old conjecture of Smith [Algorithmica'92] about their optimal topology, and providing the first explicit, general construction of candidate optimal Steiner trees for that topology.

Abstract:Let G be a simple connected graph with vertex set V(G) and edge set E(G. Each vertex of V(G) is colored by a color from the set of colors {c_1, c_2,\dots, c_{\alpha}}. We take a subset S of V(G), such that for every vertex v in V(G)§, at least one vertex of the same color is present in its set of nearest neighbors in S. We refer to such an S as a consistent subset (CS). The Minimum Consistent Subset (MCS) problem is the computation of a consistent subset of the minimum cardinality. It is established that MCS is NP-complete for general graphs, including planar graphs. The strict consistent subset is a variant of consistent subset problems. We take a subset S^{\prime} of V(G), such that for every vertex v in V(G)§^{\prime}, all the vertices in its set of nearest neighbors in S^{\prime} have the same color as that of v. We refer to such an S^{\prime} as a strict consistent subset (SCS). The Minimum Strict Consistent Subset (MSCS) problem is the computation of a strict consistent subset of the minimum cardinality. We demonstrate that MSCS is NP-hard for general graphs using a reduction from dominating set problems. We construct a 2-approximation algorithm and a polynomial-time algorithm in trees. Lastly, we conclude the faster polynomial-time algorithms in paths, spiders, and combs.

In the classic Steiner Tree problem, we aim to connect a set of vertices known as terminals using the minimum-weight tree in a given weighted graph. In this generalized version, each vertex has a penalty, and there is flexibility to decide whether to connect each vertex or pay its associated penalty, making the problem more realistic and practical.

Abstract:We propose an efficient non-incremental approach to evaluate the boundary of constructive solid geometry (CSG) in this paper. In existing CSG evaluation methods, the face membership classification is a bottleneck in executive efficiency. To increase the executive speed, we take advantages of local coherence of space labels to accelerate the classification process. We designed a two-level grouping scheme to group faces that share specific space labels to reduce redundant computation. To further enhance the performance of our approach in the non-incremental evaluation, we optimize our model generation which can produce the results in one-shot without performing a step-by-step evaluation of the Boolean operations. The robustness of our approach is strengthened by the plane-based geometry embedded in the intersection computation. Various experiments in comparison with state-of-the-art techniques have shown that our approach outperforms previous methods in boundary evaluation of both trivial and complicated CSG with massive faces while maintaining high robustness.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with geometric constraint solvers, i.e., with programs that find one or more solutions of a geometric constraint problem. If no solution exists, the solver is expected to announce that no solution has been found. Owing to the complexity, type or difficulty of a constraint problem, it is possible that the solver does not find a solution even though one may exist. Thus, there may be false negatives, but there should never be false positives. Intuitively, the ability to find solutions can be considered a measure of solver's competence. We consider static constraint problems and their solvers. We do not consider dynamic constraint solvers, also known as dynamic geometry programs, in which specific geometric elements are moved, interactively or along prescribed trajectories, while continually maintaining all stipulated constraints. However, if we have a solver for static constraint problems that is sufficiently fast and competent, we can build a dynamic geometry program from it by solving the static problem for a sufficiently dense sampling of the trajectory of the moving element(s). The work we survey has its roots in applications, especially in mechanical computer-aided design (MCAD). The constraint solvers used in MCAD took a quantum leap in the 1990s. These approaches solve a geometric constraint problem by an initial, graph-based structural analysis that extracts generic subproblems and determines how they would combine to form a complete solution. These subproblems are then handed to an algebraic solver that solves the specific instances of the generic subproblems and combines them.

DiffCSG: Differentiable CSG via Rasterization

Abstract:Differentiable rendering is a key ingredient for inverse rendering and machine learning, as it allows to optimize scene parameters (shape, materials, lighting) to best fit target images. Differentiable rendering requires that each scene parameter relates to pixel values through differentiable operations. While 3D mesh rendering algorithms have been implemented in a differentiable way, these algorithms do not directly extend to Constructive-Solid-Geometry (CSG), a popular parametric representation of shapes, because the underlying boolean operations are typically performed with complex black-box mesh-processing libraries. We present an algorithm, DiffCSG, to render CSG models in a differentiable manner. Our algorithm builds upon CSG rasterization, which displays the result of boolean operations between primitives without explicitly computing the resulting mesh and, as such, bypasses black-box mesh processing. We describe how to implement CSG rasterization within a differentiable rendering pipeline, taking special care to apply antialiasing along primitive intersections to obtain gradients in such critical areas. Our algorithm is simple and fast, can be easily incorporated into modern machine learning setups, and enables a range of applications for computer-aided design, including direct and image-based editing of CSG primitives. Efficient Algorithms for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree on Near-Convex Terminal Sets

Abstract:The Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree problem takes as input a set $\mathcal P$ of points in the Euclidean plane and finds the minimum length network interconnecting all the points of $\mathcal P$. In this paper, in continuation to the works of Du et al. and Weng et al., we study Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree when $\mathcal P$ is formed by the vertices of a pair of regular, concentric and parallel $n$-gons. We restrict our attention to the cases where the two polygons are not very close to each other. In such cases, we show that Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree is polynomial-time solvable, and we describe an explicit structure of a Euclidean Steiner minimal tree for $\mathcal P$. We also consider point sets $\mathcal P$ of size $n$ where the number of input points not on the convex hull of $\mathcal P$ is $f(n) \leq n$. We give an exact algorithm with running time $2^{\mathcal{O}(f(n)\log n)}$ for such input point sets $\mathcal P$. Note that when $f(n) = \mathcal{O}(\frac{n}{\log n})$, our algorithm runs in single-exponential time, and when $f(n) = o(n)$ the running time is $2^{o(n\log n)}$ which is better than the known algorithm stated in Hwang et al. We know that no FPTAS exists for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree unless P=NP, as shown by Garey et al. On the other hand FPTASes exist for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree on convex point sets, as given by Scott Provan. In this paper, we show that if the number of input points in $\mathcal P$ not belonging to the convex hull of $\mathcal P$ is $\mathcal{O}(\log n)$, then an FPTAS exists for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree. In contrast, we show that for any $\epsilon \in (0,1]$, when there are $\Omega(n^{\epsilon})$ points not belonging to the convex hull of the input set, then no FPTAS can exist for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree unless P=NP.

Abstract:Monte Carlo Tree Search and Monte Carlo Search have good results for many combinatorial problems. In this paper we propose to use Monte Carlo Search to design mathematical expressions that are used as exploration terms for Monte Carlo Tree Search algorithms. The optimized Monte Carlo Tree Search algorithms are PUCT and SHUSS. We automatically design the PUCT and the SHUSS root exploration terms. For small search budgets of 32 evaluations the discovered root exploration terms make both algorithms competitive with usual PUCT.
