Abstract:We study the geometry of singular $\text{SL}_n$-Hitchin fibres over the elliptic locus. We show that orbifold singularities appear in the $\text{PGL}_n$-moduli space $M^{ell}(\text{PGL}_n)$ exactly when the $\text{SL}_n$ side $M^{ell}(\text{SL}_n)$ has a reducible Hitchin fibre. Our main theorem shows that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a skyscraper sheaf supported at an orbifold singularity in $M^{ell}(\text{PGL}_n)$ satisfies a version of the fractional Hecke eigenproperty, as conjectured by Frenkel and Witten.

Abstract:Certain dissipative physical systems closely resemble Hamiltonian systems in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$, but with the canonical equation for one of the variables in each conjugate pair rescaled by a real parameter. To generalise these dynamical systems to symplectic manifolds in this paper we introduce and study the properties of deformed Hamiltonian vector fields on Lagrangian fibrations. We describe why these objects have some interesting applications to symplectic geometry and discuss how their physical interpretation motivates new problems in mathematics.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a holomorphically symplectic manifold, equipped with a Lagrangian fibration $\pi:\; M \to X$. A degenerate twistor deformation (sometimes also called ``a Tate-Shafarevich twist'') is a family of holomorphically symplectic structures on $M$ parametrized by $H^{1,1}(X)$. All members of this family are equipped with a holomorphic Lagrangian projection to $X$, and their fibers are isomorphic to the fibers of $\pi$. Assume that $M$ is a compact hyperkahler manifold of maximal holonomy, and the general fiber of the Lagrangian projection $\pi$ is primitive (that is, not divisible) in integer homology. We prove that $M$ has a degenerate twistor deformation $M'$ such that the Lagrangian projection $\pi:\; M' \to X$ admits a meromorphic section.

Abstract:In this paper, we translate the Springer theory of Weyl group representations into the language of symplectic topology. Given a semisimple complex group G, we describe a Lagrangian brane in the cotangent bundle of the adjoint quotient g/G that produces the perverse sheaves of Springer theory. The main technical tool is an analysis of the Fourier transform for constructible sheaves from the perspective of the Fukaya category. Our results can be viewed as a toy model of the quantization of Hitchin fibers in the Geometric Langlands program.

Compactifying Lagrangian fibrations

Abstract:We suggest a general framework for compactifing quasi-projective Lagrangian fibrations of geometric origin by holomorphic symplectic varieties. This framework includes a compactification criterion, which we then apply to various fibrations of geometric origin, and a discussion on holomorphic forms that are defined via correspondences in geometric examples. As application, we show that given a Lagrangian fibration $X \to B$ admitting local sections over an open subset $V$ with codimension $\ge 2$ complement, there exists a (possibly singular) holomorphic symplectic compactification of the Albanese fibration $A \to V$ (which we show exists as a smooth commutative algebraic group with connected fibers acting on $X_{V}$), as well as of any other torsor over $A$, or over any smooth commutative group scheme over $B$ with connected fibers that is isogenous to $A$.

Abstract:The Hitchin component of the character variety of representations of a surface group $\pi_1(S)$ into $\mathrm{PSL}_d(\mathbb R)$ for some $d\geq 3$ can be equipped with a pressure metric whose restriction to the Fuchsian locus equals the Weil-Petersson metric up to a constant factor. We show that if the genus of $S$ is at least $3$, then the Fuchsian locus contains quasi-convex subsets of infinite diameter for the Weil--Petersson metric whose diameter for the path metric of the pressure metric is finite. This is established through showing that biinfinite paths of bending deformations have controlled bounded length. To this end we give a geometric interpretation of Fock--Goncharov positivity and show that bending deformations of Fuchsian representations stabilize a uniform Finsler quasi-convex disk in the symmetric space $\mathrm{PSL}_d(\mathbb R)/\mathrm{PSO}(d)$.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the following new ingredients: (1) rework on part of the Lagrangian surgery theory; (2) constructions of Lagrangian cobordisms on product symplectic manifolds; (3) extending Biran-Cornea Lagrangian cobordism theory to the immersed category. As a result, we manifest Seidel's exact sequences (both the Lagrangian version and the symplectomorphism version), as well as Wehrheim-Woodward's family Dehn twist sequence (including the codimension-1 case missing in the literature) as consequences of our surgery/cobordism constructions. Moreover, we obtain an expression of the autoequivalence of Fukaya category induced by Dehn twists along Lagrangian $\mathbb{RP}^n$, $\mathbb{CP}^n$ and $\mathbb{HP}^n$, which matches Huybrechts-Thomas's mirror prediction of the $\mathbb{CP}^n$ case modulo connecting maps. We also prove the split generation of any symplectomorphism by Dehn twists in $ADE$-type Milnor fibers.
Hodge theory and Lagrangian fibrations on holomorphic symplectic manifolds

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to establish several new results about the Hodge theory of Lagrangian fibrations on (not necessarily compact) holomorphic symplectic manifolds. Let $M$ be a holomorphic symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ that is Kähler but not necessarily compact, and let $\pi \colon M \to B$ be a Lagrangian fibration. We establish a relationship between the bundle of holomorphic $(n+i)$-forms on $M$ and the $i$-th perverse sheaf $P_i$ in the decomposition theorem for $\pi$. This is formulated using Saito's theory of Hodge modules and the BGG correspondence (between graded modules over the symmetric and exterior algebra). Along the way, we prove a relative Hard Lefschetz theorem for the action by the symplectic form; we prove two recent conjectures by Maulik, Shen, and Yin; we give a short proof for Matsushita's theorem (about higher direct images of the structure sheaf); and we show, without using hyperkähler metrics, that every Lagrangian fibration gives rise to an action by the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_3(\mathbb{C})$ (in the noncompact case) or $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb{C})$ (in the compact case).

Shifted symplectic pushforwards

Abstract:We introduce how to pushforward shifted symplectic fibrations along base changes. This is achieved by considering symplectic forms that are closed in a stronger sense. Examples include: symplectic zero loci and symplectic quotients. Observing that twisted cotangent bundles are symplectic pushforwards, we obtain an equivalence between symplectic fibrations and Lagrangians to critical loci. We provide two local structure theorems for symplectic fibrations: a smooth local structure theorem for higher stacks via symplectic zero loci and twisted cotangents, and an {é}tale local structure theorem for $1$-stacks with reductive stabilizers via symplectic quotients of the smooth local models. We resolve deformation invariance issue in Donaldson-Thomas theory of Calabi-Yau $4$-folds. Abstractly, we associate virtual Lagrangian cycles for oriented $(-2)$-symplectic fibrations as unique functorial bivariant classes over the exact loci. For moduli of perfect complexes, we show that the exact loci consist of deformations for which the $(0,4)$-Hodge pieces of the second Chern characters remain zero.

Abstract:Let M(Spin(8,C)) be the moduli space of Spin(8,C)-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface X of genus g≥2. This admits a system called the Hitchin integrable system, induced by the Hitchin map, the fibers of which are Prym varieties. Moreover, the triality automorphism of Spin(8,C) acts on M(Spin(8,C)), and those Higgs bundles that admit a reduction in the structure group to G2 are fixed points of this action. This defines a map of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles M(G2)→M(Spin(8,C)). In this work, the action of triality automorphism is extended to an action on the Hitchin integrable system associated with M(Spin(8,C)). In particular, it is checked that the map M(G2)→M(Spin(8,C)) is restricted to a map at the level of the Prym varieties induced by the Hitchin map. Necessary and sufficient conditions are also provided for the Prym varieties associated with the moduli spaces of G2 and Spin(8,C)-Higgs bundles to be disconnected. Finally, some consequences are drawn from the above results in relation to the geometry of the Prym varieties involved.

Deformation of Fuchsian representations and proper affine actions

Abstract:The main goal of this article is to generalize Mess' work and using results from Labourie--Wentworth, Potrie--Sambarino and Smilga, to show that inside Hitchin representations, infinitesimal deformations of Fuchsian representations of a cocompact surface group do not act properly along the directions corresponding to the sum of a mixed odd differential and a $2m$-differential for any $1\leq m \leq \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$. In the process, we introduce affine versions of cross ratios and triple ratios. We introduce Margulis invariants and relate them with affine crossratios and infinitesimal Jordan projections. We obtain a general equivalent criterion for existence of proper affine actions in terms of the structure of the Margulis invariant spectra. Also, using a stability argument we show the existence of proper affine actions of non-abelian free groups whose linear part is a Hitchin representation.

Abstract:In this paper, we study rational sections of the relative Picard scheme of a linear system on a smooth projective variety. We prove that if the linear system is basepoint-free and the locus of non-integral divisors has codimension at least two, then all rational sections of the relative Picard scheme come from restrictions of line bundles on the variety. As a consequence, we describe the group of sections of the Hitchin fibration for moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on curves.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study motivic aspects of the Hitchin system for $\mathrm{GL}_n$. Our results include the following. (a) We prove the motivic decomposition conjecture of Corti-Hanamura for the Hitchin system; in particular, the decomposition theorem associated with the Hitchin system is induced by algebraic cycles. This yields an unconditional construction of the motivic perverse filtration for the Hitchin system, which lifts the cohomological/sheaf-theoretic perverse filtration. (b) We prove that the inverse of the relative Hard Lefschetz symmetry is induced by a relative algebraic correspondence, confirming the relative Lefschetz standard conjecture for the Hitchin system. (c) We show a strong perversity bound for the normalized Chern classes of a universal bundle with respect to the motivic perverse filtration; this specializes to the sheaf-theoretic result obtained earlier by Maulik-Shen. (d) We prove a $\chi$-independence result for the relative Chow motives associated with Hitchin systems. Our methods combine Fourier transforms for compactified Jacobian fibrations associated with integral locally planar curves, nearby and vanishing cycle techniques, and a Springer-theoretic interpretation of parabolic Hitchin moduli spaces.

Abstract:We construct a universal partial compactification of the relative moduli space of semistable meromorphic Higgs bundles over the stack of stable pointed curves. It parametrizes meromorphic Gieseker Higgs bundles, and is equipped with a flat and proper extension of the usual Hitchin morphism. Over an open subset of the Hitchin base parametrizing allowable nodal spectral covers, we describe the relation of the fibers to compactified Jacobians, thus establishing an analogue of the BNR correspondence. We also construct a version of the moduli space where we require the residues of the meromorphic Higgs bundle to lie in a given set of nilpotent conjugacy classes. In this latter case, we show that there is a flat and proper Hitchin morphism to the flat degeneration of the corresponding family of Hitchin bases constructed in previous physics work.

Abstract:We introduce and describe the "regular quotient" for the Hitchin fibration for symmetric spaces and explain some basic consequences for Higgs bundles. We include an invariant theoretic approach to spectral covers in this setting for the particular space $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}/(\mathrm{GL}_n\times \mathrm{GL}_n)$. We also include a study of the regular centralizer group scheme for quasisplit pairs, including a Galois description of a closely related group scheme. We collect some basic consequences for Hitchin systems associated to such pairs.

Abstract:We prove the Strominger--Yau--Zaslow and topological mirror symmetries for parabolic Hitchin systems of types B and C. In contrast to type A, a geometric reinterpretation of Springer duality is necessary. Furthermore, unlike Hitchin's construction in the non-parabolic case, the map between generic fibers in type B and C needs more analysis due to the change of partitions of Springer dual nilpotent orbits, which is the main difficulty in this article. To tackle this challenge, we first construct and study the geometry of the generic Hitchin fibers of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles associated to the nilpotent orbit closures. Then we study their relation with the generic Hitchin fibers of parabolic Hitchin systems. Along this way, we establish intriguing connections between Springer duality, Kazhdan--Lusztig maps, and singularities of spectral curves, and uncover a new geometric interpretation of Lusztig's canonical quotient.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we investigate the properties of the real and complex projective structures associated to Hitchin and quasi‐Hitchin representations that were originally constructed using Guichard–Wienhard's theory of domains of discontinuity. We determine the topology of the underlying manifolds and we prove that some of these geometric structures are fibered in a special standard way. In order to prove these results, we give two new ways to construct these geometric structures: we construct them using gauge theory, flat bundles, and Higgs bundles, and we also give a new geometric way to construct them.
