Abstract:Regular variations of the pulse period of Her X-1 with X-ray flux observed by Fermi-GBM are examined. We argue that these regular variations result from the free precession of the neutron star in Her X-1.

Abstract:It has been suggested that the 35 day clock mechanism of Her X-1 is caused by the precession of the neutron star. We made calculations for this model. Comparing our calculated results with observations we find: 1. (1) The theoretical light curve over the the 35 day cycle does not agree with the observed curve by Jones and Forman (1976). 2. (2) The change of pulse width and intensity with the 35 day phase is large in the model, seemingly disagreeing with the observations (e.g., Gruber et al. 1980). 3. (3) Parmer et al. (1985) reported that they did not see the expected 35 day variation in X-ray intensity expected in the model. Pravdo et al. (1977) suggested that the observed X-ray pulses were formed by Thomson scattering of symmetric radiating beams generated near the surface of the neutron star. Our analysis based on the theory of Thomson scattering in strong magnetic fields shows that this model agrees well with the observations.
Swift/BAT and RXTE/ASM Observations of the 35-day X-ray Cycle of Hercules X-1

Abstract:Swift/BAT and RXTE/ASM observations have monitored the X-ray binary system Her X-1 for approximately 14.5 years each, and both were monitoring Her X-1 for a period of ~5.5 years. Here we study the 35-day cycle using these observations. Using a cross-correlation method we find the times of peaks of the 35-day cycles for ~150 cycles observed by Swift/BAT and ~150 cycles observed by RXTE/ASM. These cycles include ~60 observed with both instruments. The noise level of the RXTE/ASM measurements is larger than that of Swift/BAT, resulting in larger uncertainty in peak times. The distribution of 35-day cycle lengths can be fit with a Gaussian with mean 34.79 d and $\sigma$ of 1.1 d. The distribution of orbital phases of 35-day cycle peaks is well fit by a uniform distribution, with 76 percent of the cycles, plus a Gaussian distribution peaked at orbital phase ~0.5, with 24 percent of the cycles. We construct the long-term average 35-day lightcurve in the 15-50 keV band from Swift/BAT, and in the 2-12 keV band from RXTE/ASM. The high energy band shows more variability in the Short High state and the low energy band shows more variability in the Main High state. This is consistent with a precessing accretion disk model as cause of the 35-day cycle.

Abstract:We present spin-resolved X-ray data of the neutron star binary Her X-1. We find evidence that the Iron line at 6.4 keV originates from the same location as the blackbody X-ray component. The line width and energy varies over both the spin period and the 35 day precession period. We also find that the correlation between the soft and hard X-ray light curves varies over the 35 day period.

Abstract:The high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) SMC X-1 exhibits a superorbital modulation with a dramatically varying period ranging between ~40 d and ~60 d. This research studies the time-frequency properties of the superorbital modulation of SMC X-1 based on the observations made by the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE).We analyzed the entire ASM database collected since 1996. The Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT), developed for non-stationary and nonlinear time series analysis, was adopted to derive the instantaneous superorbital frequency. The resultant Hilbert spectrum is consistent with the dynamic power spectrum while it shows more detailed information in both the time and frequency domains. The RXTE observations manifest that the superorbital modulation period was mostly betweenn ~50 d and ~65 d, whenas it changed to ~45 d around MJD 50,800 and MJD 54,000. Our analysis further indicates that the instantaneous frequency changed in a time scale of hundreds of days between ~MJD 51,500 and ~MJD 53,500. Based on the instantaneous phase defined by HHT, we folded the ASM light curve to derive a superorbital profile, from which an asymmetric feature and a low state with barely any X-ray emissions (lasting for ~0.3 cycles) were observed. We also calculated the correlation between the mean period and the amplitude of the superorbital modulation. The result is similar to the recently discovered relationship between the superorbital cycle length and the mean X-ray flux for Her X-1.
The 35-Day Evolution of the Hercules X-1 Pulse Profile: Evidence For A Resolved Inner Disk Occultation of the Neutron Star

Abstract:Ginga and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations have allowed an unprecedented view of the recurrent systematic pulse shape changes associated with the 35-day cycle of Hercules X-1, a phenomenon currently unique among the known accretion-powered pulsars. We present observations of the pulse shape evolution. An explanation for the pulse evolution in terms of a freely precessing neutron star is reviewed and shown to have several major difficulties in explaining the observed pulse evolution pattern. Instead, we propose a phenomenological model for the pulse evolution based upon an occultation of the pulse emitting region by the tilted, inner edge of a precessing accretion disk. The systematic and repeating pulse shape changes require a resolved occultation of the pulse emission region. The observed pulse profile motivates the need for a pulsar beam consisting of a composite coaxial pencil and fan beam but the observed evolution pattern requires the fan beam to be focused around the neutron star and beamed in the antipodal direction. The spectral hardness of the pencil beam component suggests an origin at the magnetic polar cap, with the relatively softer fan beam emission produced by backscattering from within the accretion column, qualitatively consistent with several theoretical models for X-ray emission from the accretion column of an accreting neutron star.

Abstract:Aims: We investigate the X-ray spectral and timing properties of the accreting X-ray pulsar Her X-1 observed with the INTEGRAL satellite in July-August 2005. Methods: The data analyzed in this work cover a substantial part of one main-on state of the source. The short-time scale pulse period development is measured. X-ray pulse profiles for different energy ranges and time intervals are constructed. Pulse-averaged and pulse-phase resolved broad band X-ray spectra are studied. Spectral changes during X-ray dips are explored. Results: The X-ray pulse profiles are found to change significantly during the period of observations. For the first time a strong spinup is measured within one 35 d cycle. Spectral characteristics observed during the X-ray dips are consistent with their interpretaion as due to partial covering as has been reported by several authors. The fundamental cyclotron absorption line is firmly observed in both pulse-averaged and pulse-phase resolved X-ray spectra. The energy, width, and the depth of the line are found to vary significantly with pulse phase.

Abstract:In an accreting X-ray pulsar, a neutron star accretes matter from a stellar companion through an accretion disk. The high magnetic field of the rotating neutron star disrupts the inner edge of the disc, funneling the gas to flow onto the magnetic poles on its surface. Hercules X-1 is in many ways the prototypical X-ray pulsar; it shows persistent X-ray emission and it resides with its companion HZ Her, a two-solar-mass star, at about 7~kpc from Earth. Its emission varies on three distinct timescales: the neutron star rotates every 1.2~seconds, it is eclipsed by its companion each 1.7~days, and the system exhibits a superorbital period of 35~days which has remained remarkably stable since its discovery. Several lines of evidence point to the source of this variation as the precession of the accretion disc, the precession of the neutron star or both. Despite the many hints over the past fifty years, the precession of the neutron star itself has yet not been confirmed or refuted. We here present X-ray polarization measurements with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) which probe the spin geometry of the neutron star. These observations provide direct evidence that the 35-day-period is set by the free precession of the neutron star crust, which has the important implication that its crust is somewhat asymmetric fractionally by a few parts per ten million. Furthermore, we find indications that the basic spin geometry of the neutron star is altered by torques on timescale of a few hundred days.

Updating the orbital ephemeris of Her X-1; rate of decay and eccentricity of the orbit

Abstract:We present an update of the orbital ephemeris of the binary X-ray pulsar Her X-1 and determine an improved value for the rate of orbital decay. In addition, we report the first measurement of the orbital eccentricity. We have analyzed pulse timing data of Her X-1 from X-ray observations by RXTE (Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer) and INTEGRAL over the period 1996-2007. Accurate pulse arrival times were determined from solar system bary-centered photon arrival times by generating pulse profiles averaged over appropriately short integration times. Applying pulse phase connection techniques, it was possible to determine sufficiently accurate local ephemeris data for seven observation periods distributed over 12 years. Combining the new local T90 values with historical values from the literature we update the orbital ephemeris of Her X-1 to T90 = MJD 46359.871940(6) and Porb = 1.700167590(2) d and measure a continuous change of the orbital period of dPorb/dt = -(4.85 +/- 0.13) x 10-11 s/s. For the first time, a value for the eccentricity of the orbit of Her X-1 is measured to be e = (4.2 +/- 0.8) x 10-4.

Identification of a 12-17 day timescale in X-ray observations of GRS 1915+105

Abstract:Measurement of the energy emitted from accreting astrophysical systems provides an observational constraint on the plasma processes that may be operating within the disk. Here we examine the continual time variation over the past six years of the total X-ray flux from the microquasar GRS 1915+105. The application of differencing and rescaling techniques to RXTE/ASM data shows that the small amplitude fluctuations scale up to 12-17 days. A 17-day timescale in the X-ray fluctuations corresponds to half the measured binary orbital period of this system (33.5 +/- 1.5 days). While this may be coincidental, it is possible that these two timescales may be linked by, for example, a turbulent cascade in the accretion disk driven by a tidally-induced two-armed spiral shock corotating with the binary system. Temporal scaling is found only in the ever-present small fluctuations, and not in the intermittent larger-amplitude fluctuations. This is consistent with the basic model for this source which consists of a steady, cold outer disk and an unstable inner disk.

HZ Her: Stellar Radius from X-ray Eclipse Observations, Evolutionary State and a New Distance

Abstract:Observations of HZ Her/Her X-1 by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) covering high state eclipses of the neutron star are analyzed here. Models of the eclipse are used to measure the radius and atmospheric scale height of HZ Her, the stellar companion to the neutron star. The radius is 2.58 to 3.01 $\times10^{11}$ cm, depending on system inclination and mass ratio(q), with accuracy of $\sim$1 part in 1000 for given inclination and $q$. We fit Kurucz model stellar atmosphere models to archival optical observations. The resulting effective temperature ($T_{eff}$) of the unheated face of HZ Her is determined to be in the 2$\sigma$ range 7720K to 7865K, and metallicity ($log(Z/Z_{\odot})$) in the range -0.27 to +.03. The model atmosphere surface flux and new radius yield a new distance to HZ Her/ Her X-1, depending on system inclination and $q$: a best-fit value of 6.1 kpc with upper and lower limits of 5.7 kpc and 7.0 kpc. We calculate stellar evolution models for the range of allowed masses (from orbital parameters), and allowed metallicities (from optical spectrum fits). The stellar models agree with $T_{eff}$ and radius of HZ Her for two narrow ranges of mass: 2.15 to 2.20 $M_{\odot}$ and 2.35 to 2.45 $M_{\odot}$ This lower mass range implies a low neutron star mass (1.3 $M_{\odot}$), whereas the higher mass range implies a high neutron star mass (1.5-1.7 $M_{\odot}$).

Abstract:1RXS J083842.1−282723 is a nearly synchronous magnetic cataclysmic variable with a simple X-ray light curve. While its orbital period was fairly well established at P orb = 98.4 minutes from optical spectroscopy, indirect estimates of P spin /P orb ranged from 0.90 to 0.96 because the short X-ray light curves could not determine the beat period to a factor of 2. We analyze a recent 50 days TESS observation, and ground-based optical time-series photometry spanning 9 yr, that together measure precise beat, orbit, and spin periods and enable the X-ray and optical modulations to be phase aligned. Although the X-ray light curves do not distinguish between a beat period of 16.11 or 32.22 hr, all of the optical evidence favors the longer value, with complete pole switching of accretion every half beat cycle. This would require P spin /P orb = 0.952. Long-term optical monitoring also shows a decline in accretion rate, and a change in the beat-folded light curve. It would be useful to obtain a new X-ray/optical observation of at least 32 hr duration to examine any associated change in accretion structure, and to confirm the spin and beat periods.

Is Her-X-1 A Strange Star

Abstract:Though the existence of strange stars have been conjectured, it is very difficult to distinguish them from neutron stars, since both strange stars and neutron stars share similarities in many observable phenomena. But the mass - radius (M - R) relations of strange stars are different from those of neutron stars. The M - R relation of an X-ray pulsar can be determined semi-empirically from the observations of its spin variation and cyclotron spectral line. Here we calculate the semi-empirical M - R relation of the X-ray pulsar Her X-1. Comparing the result with the theoretical interior models of a neutron star and of a strange star respectively, we find that a strange star model is more consistent with Her X-1 and suggest it is a strange star.
Changes in the distribution of circum-binary material around the HMXB GX 301-2 during a rapid spin-up episode of the neutron star

Abstract:Some accretion powered X-ray pulsars with supergiant companion stars undergo occasional rapid spin-up episodes that last for weeks to a few months. We explore the changes in the accretion environment of the pulsar GX 301-2 during its latest 80 days long spin-up episode in 2019 when the spin frequency of the pulsar increased by ~2% over two orbits of the binary. By performing time-resolved spectroscopy with the MAXI/GSC spectra of the source, we estimated the equivalent hydrogen column density and equivalent width of the iron fluorescence line during the spin-up episode, and compared them with the long-term average values estimated by orbital-phase resolved spectroscopy. The measured absorption column density during the spin-up episode is about twice that of an average orbit, while the equivalent width of the iron line is less than half of an average orbit. Though the spin-up episode started immediately after a pre-periastron flare and lasted for the two consecutive orbits of the binary, the associated enhancement in luminosity started a few days after the pre-periastron flare and lasted only during the first orbit, and some enhancement was seen again during the pre-periastron passage of the second orbit. The absorption column density and iron line equivalent width vary throughout the spin-up episode and are distinct from an average orbit. These observations indicate a significant change in the accretion and reprocessing environment in GX 301-2 during the spin-up episode and may hold important clues for the phenomenon in this source and several other sources with supergiant companions.

Abstract:In an accreting X-ray pulsar, a neutron star accretes matter from a companion star through an accretion disk. The magnetic field of the rotating neutron star disrupts the inner edge of the disk, funnelling the gas to flow onto the poles on its surface. Hercules X-1 is a prototypical persistent X-ray pulsar about 7 kpc from Earth. Its emission varies on three distinct timescales: the neutron star rotates every 1.2 s, it is eclipsed by its companion each 1.7 d, and the system exhibits a superorbital period of 35 d, which has remained stable since its discovery. Several lines of evidence point to the source of this variation as the precession of the accretion disk or that of the neutron star. Despite the many hints over the past 50 yr, the precession of the neutron star itself has yet not been confirmed or refuted. X-ray polarization measurements (probing the spin geometry of Her X-1) with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer suggest that free precession of the neutron star crust sets the 35 d period; this has the important implication that its crust is somewhat asymmetric by a few parts per ten million.

The 1999 Hercules X-1 Anomalous Low State

Abstract:A failed main-on in the 35d cycle of Her X-1 was observed with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) on 1999 April 26. Exceptions to the normal 35d cycle have been seen only twice before; in 1983 and again 1993. We present timing and spectral results of this latest Anomalous Low State (ALS) along with comparisons to the main-on and normal low states. Pulsations were observed in the 3-18 keV band with a fractional RMS variation of (0.037+-0.003). Spectral analysis indicates that the ALS spectrum has the same shape as the main-on but is modified by heavy absorption and scattering. We find that 70% of the observed emission has passed through a cold absorber (N_H=5.0x10^{23}cm^{-2}). This partially absorbing spectral fit can be applied to the normal low state with similar results. We find that the ALS observations may be interpreted as a decrease in inclination of the accretion disk causing the central X-Ray source to be obscured over the entire 35d cycle.

Abstract:The X-ray pulsar SMC X-1 shows a superorbital modulation with an unstable cycle length in the X-ray band. We present its timing behaviors, including the spin, orbital, and superorbital modulations, beyond the end of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer mission. The time-frequency maps derived by the wavelet Z-transform and the Hilbert–Huang transform suggest that a new superorbital period excursion event occurred in ~MJD 57,100 (2015 March). This indicates that the excursion is recurrent and probably (quasi)periodic. The hardness ratio obtained with the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) suggests increased absorption during the transition from the high to the low state in the superorbital cycle. Compared to the regular epochs, the superorbital profile during the excursion epochs has a shallower and narrower valley, likely caused by a flatter warp. By tracking the spin period evolution with the MAXI Gas Slit Camera in 2–20 keV, we derive an averaged spin-up rate of s−2 during the period between MJD 55,141 (2009 November) and 58,526 (2019 February). We obtain no positive correlation between the spin frequency residual and the superorbital frequency, but a torque change accompanying the superorbital period excursion is possible. We suggest that the accretion torque on the neutron star could be changed by various mechanisms, including the change of mass accretion rate and the warp angle. We update the value of the orbital decay as yr−1. Finally, we reconfirm the detection of the superorbital modulation in the optical band and its coherence in phase with the X-ray modulation.

Abstract:The cyclotron line feature in the X-ray spectrum of the accretion powered pulsar Her X-1 has been observed and monitored for over three decades. The line energy exhibited a slow secular decline over the period 1995-2014, with a possible (not confirmed) indication of a reversal thereafter. Recent works have shown that the temporal evolution of the line energy may be modelled as a flattening after an earlier decrease until MJD 55400 ($\pm200)$. In this work, we present the results of ASTROSAT observations in the context of earlier data and offer a common interpretation through a detailed study of temporal and flux dependence. We find that the variation of the line energy does not support an upward trend but is consistent with the reported flattening after an earlier decrease until MJD $54487^{+515}_{-469}$.

Abstract:The X-ray spectrum of GRS 1915+105 is known to have a ``broad iron spectral feature'' in the spectral hard state. Similar spectral features are often observed in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and other black-hole binaries (BHBs), and several models have been proposed for explaining it. In order to distinguish spectral models, time variation provides an important key. In AGNs, variation amplitude has been found to drop significantly at the iron K-energy band at timescales of ~10 ks. If spectral variations of black-holes are normalized by their masses, the spectral variations of BHBs at timescales of sub-seconds should exhibit similar characteristics to those of AGNs. In this paper, we investigated spectral variations of GRS 1915+105 at timescales down to ~10 ms. This was made possible for the first time with the Suzaku XIS Parallel-sum clocking (P-sum) mode, which has the CCD energy-resolution as well as a time-resolution of 7.8 ms. Consequently, we found that the variation amplitude of GRS 1915+105 does not drop at the iron K-energy band at any timescales from 0.06 s to 63000 s, and that the entire X-ray flux and the iron feature are independently variable at timescales of hours. These are naturally understood in the framework of the ``partial covering'' model, in which variation timescales of the continuum flux and partial absorbers are independent. The difference of energy dependence of the variation amplitude between AGN and BHB is presumably due to different mechanisms of the outflow winds, i.e., the partial absorbers are due to UV-line driven winds (AGN) or thermally-driven winds (BHB).
