Abstract:High-resolution beam telescopes for charged particle tracking are one of the most important and equally demanding infrastructure items at test beam facilities. The main purpose of beam telescopes is to provide precise reference track information of beam particles to measure the performance of a device under test (DUT). In this report the development of the ADENIUM beam telescope (ALPIDE sensor based DESY Next test beam Instrument) as a demonstrator and prototype for a next-generation beam telescope is presented. The ADENIUM beam telescope features up to six pixelated reference planes framed by plastic scintillators for triggering. ADENIUM is capable of replacing the currently used EUDET-type beam telescopes without impacting existing DUT implementations due to the integration of the telescope DAQ into EUDAQ2. In this report the concept and design of the ADENIUM telescope as well as its performance are discussed. The telescope's pointing resolution is determined in different configurations. For an optimal setup at an momentum of 5.6 GeV with an ALPIDE as DUT, a resolution better than 3 um has been extracted. No rate limitations have been observed at the DESY II test beam.

Abstract: A high-resolution beam telescope is one of the most important and equally demanding infrastructure at any test beam facility. Its main purpose is to provide reference particle tracks from the incoming test beam particles to the test beam users, which allows to measure the performance of the so-called device-under-test (DUT). We present the development of the ADENUIM beam telescope (ALPIDE sensor based DESY Next testbeam Instrument). The ADENUIM beam telescope is equipped with vary number of telescope planes depending on testbeam measurement by users. The telescope planes are framed by plastic scintillators. The coincident signal of all scintillators is used as trigger and then used as a trigger and distributed to the entire system, including all the telescope planes and any devices under test from test beam users. Both the data acquisition and offline reconstruction software are kept being compatible to the EUDET-style beam telescope. This allows an telescope hardware replacement, without forcing users to migrate their data acquisition system. The biased residual distribution is studied as a function of the beam energy, pixel layers distance and sensor threshold. The measure pointing resolution of reconstructed tracks is better than 6 um. The design trigger rate is up to 100 kHz. The number of fake hits is negligible after applying an masking of a few defect pixels.

Abstract:This work investigates the astigmatic dual-beam interferometric particle imaging (ADIPI) to enable the measurement of the three-dimensional (3D) spatial position and particle size of spherical opaque particles. A general theoretical model based on the generalized Huygens-Fresnel integral and the ray transfer matrix model is established to characterize ADIPI signal, revealing the orientation and spacing of typical ADIPI fringes relating to the depth position and size. The model is applied to study the effects of several parameters, such as the focal length of cylindrical lens, the focal length of spherical lens and the distances between the elements in the optical system, on the relationship between the inclination angle of fringes and depth position by theoretical simulation. Experiments of ADIPI, incorporating dual-view digital inline holography (DIH), is performed to demonstrate the utility of ADIPI in the measurement of opaque spherical particles. Through the analysis of the general ADIPI signal based on two-dimensional Fourier transforms, 3D position and the particle size are obtained. The results of ADIPI, in both of the depth position and size measuring, exhibit a high degree of consistency with DIH's, given the average relative deviations of 5% in size measuring and 1% in depth position, respectively. As a new measurement approach, the ADIPI signal exists at arbitrary angle except the two laser beam axes, determining the flexibility of ADIPI configurations which facilitates its great prospect in opaque particles measurement, e.g., metal combustion, chip manufacturing, 3D metal printing.

Abstract:DESI (Dark Energy Spectropic Instrument) is a Stage IV ground-based dark energy experiment that will study baryon acoustic oscillations and the growth of structure through redshift-space distortions with a wide-area galaxy and quasar redshift survey. The DESI instrument is a robotically-actuated, fiber-fed spectrograph capable of taking up to 5,000 simultaneous spectra over a wavelength range from 360 nm to 980 nm. The fibers feed ten three-arm spectrographs with resolution $R= \lambda/\Delta\lambda$ between 2000 and 5500, depending on wavelength. The DESI instrument will be used to conduct a five-year survey designed to cover 14,000 deg$^2$. This powerful instrument will be installed at prime focus on the 4-m Mayall telescope in Kitt Peak, Arizona, along with a new optical corrector, which will provide a three-degree diameter field of view. The DESI collaboration will also deliver a spectroscopic pipeline and data management system to reduce and archive all data for eventual public use.

Abstract:The enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission (eXTP) is a next-generation flagship X-ray astronomy satellite currently in phase-B study. The large Area Detector (LAD) on board eXTP contains 40 modules, each consisting of a set of 4 4 large area SDDs and 4 4 collimators, and has a designed effective area of 3.0 m at 8 keV and a Field of View (FoV) of 1 . To achieve such a large effective area, the collimator's Open Area Ratio (OAR) should be greater than 70%. In this paper, we introduce the measurement methods used to determine the OAR and the rocking curve (angular response) of the LAD collimator at the 100-m X-ray Test Facility (100XF) of the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) in Beijing, and report the results of the collimators manufactured under different conditions. The measured OARs of the collimators are usually smaller than the theoretical values by a few percent, which is due to the non-uniformity and irregularity of the pores. The measured rocking curves are usually broader than the theoretical triangular curves, and the lower the energy of the incident X-ray the broader the rocking curve. This broadening of the rocking curve is the result of reflection on the inner wall of the pores. Our results also show that increasing the etching time in the manufacturing of the collimators can increase the OARs but does not change significantly the shape of the rocking curves.

Abstract:Four years after the last LISA meeting, the NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS) finds itself in the middle of major changes to the infrastructure and contents of its database. In this paper we highlight a number of features of great importance to librarians and discuss the additional functionality that we are currently developing. Starting in 2011, the ADS started to systematically collect, parse and index full-text documents for all the major publications in Physics and Astronomy as well as many smaller Astronomy journals and arXiv e-prints, for a total of over 3.5 million papers. Our citation coverage has doubled since 2010 and now consists of over 70 million citations. We are normalizing the affiliation information in our records and, in collaboration with the CfA library and NASA, we have started collecting and linking funding sources with papers in our system. At the same time, we are undergoing major technology changes in the ADS platform which affect all aspects of the system and its operations. We have rolled out and are now enhancing a new high-performance search engine capable of performing full-text as well as metadata searches using an intuitive query language which supports fielded, unfielded and functional searches. We are currently able to index acknowledgments, affiliations, citations, funding sources, and to the extent that these metadata are available to us they are now searchable under our new platform. The ADS private library system is being enhanced to support reading groups, collaborative editing of lists of papers, tagging, and a variety of privacy settings when managing one's paper collection. Abstract:The LYCORIS Large Area Silicon Strip Telescope for the DESY II Test Beam Facility is presented. The DESY II Test Beam Facility provides elec- tron and positron beams for beam tests of up to 6 GeV. A new telescope with a large 10x20 cm$^2$ coverage area based on a 25 {\mu}m pitch strip sensor is to be installed within the PCMAG 1 T solenoid. The current state of the system is presented.

Abstract:ARDESIA is an SDD-based, X-ray spectrometer, optimized for synchrotron measurements that require high count rates (>1 Mcounts/s/channel) and good energy resolution (<130 eV of FHWM Mn-K α line at optimum shaping time, ≤ 200 eV at short shaping times). The main target applications are XRF and XAFS techniques. The detection module consists of 2 × 2 pixel monolithic SDD (5 mm pitch) coupled with a 4-channel version of the CUBE CMOS preamplifier. The mechanical structure of the instrument has been realized to fit inside a sample chamber with a finger-like structure. The system grants proper cooling (-40 o C) and operation in vacuum. ARDESIA is also equipped with two auxiliary electronic boards: one for SDD powering and biasing and the other for closed-loop driving of two Peltier TECs. The output signals of the instrument are processed by digital pulse processors using short pulse processing times in order to achieve good spectroscopic performance at high count rates. Two different measurement campaigns were performed at synchrotron beamlines to assess the performance of the instrument. At the LNF DAΦNE-Light DXR1 soft X-ray beamline, XRF measurements on low atomic number elements (down to C-K line, 277 eV) demonstrated the good energy resolution of the spectrometer and made possible to acquire the first XAFS spectrum of Silicon K-edge in a Pyrex TM glass sample. At the LISA CRG beamline at ESRF—Grenoble, XAFS measurements on different samples, such as kesterite and protochabourn'eite, were performed, demonstrating the high count rate capability and stability of the instrument over time.

ARIADNE+: Large scale demonstration of fast optical readout for dual-phase LArTPCs at the CERN Neutrino Platform

Abstract:Optical readout of large scale dual-phase liquid Argon TPCs is an attractive alternative to charge readout and has been successfully demonstrated on a 2x2m active region within the CERN protoDUNE cold box. ARIADNE+ uses four Timepix3 cameras imaging the S2 light produced by 16 novel, patent pending, glass THGEMs. ARIADNE+ takes advantage of the raw Timepix3 data coming natively 3D and zero suppressed with a 1.6ns timing resolution. Three of the four THGEM quadrants implement readout in the visible light range through wavelength shifting, with the fourth featuring a VUV light intensifier, thus removing the need for wavelength shifting altogether. Cosmic ray reconstruction and energy calibration was performed. Presented is a summary of the detector setup and experimental run, preliminary analysis of the run data and future outlook for the ARIADNE program.

Abstract:Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxies (LAEs) are typically young, low-mass, star-forming galaxies with little extinction from interstellar dust. Their low dust attenuation allows their Lyα emission to shine brightly in spectroscopic and photometric observations, providing an observational window into the high-redshift Universe. Narrowband surveys reveal large, uniform samples of LAEs at specific redshifts that probe large-scale structure and the temporal evolution of galaxy properties. The One-hundred-deg 2 DECam Imaging in Narrowbands (ODIN) utilizes three custom-made narrowband filters on the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to discover LAEs at three equally spaced periods in cosmological history. In this paper, we introduce the hybrid-weighted double-broadband continuum estimation technique, which yields improved estimation of Lyα equivalent widths. Using this method, we discover 6032, 5691, and 4066 LAE candidates at z = 2.4, 3.1, and 4.5 in the extended COSMOS field (∼9 deg 2 ). We find that [O ii] emitters are a minimal contaminant in our LAE samples, but that interloping Green Pea–like [O iii] emitters are important for our redshift 4.5 sample. We introduce an innovative method for identifying [O ii] and [O iii] emitters via a combination of narrowband excess and galaxy colors, enabling their study as separate classes of objects. We present scaled median stacked spectral energy distributions for each galaxy sample, revealing the overall success of our selection methods. We also calculate rest-frame Lyα equivalent widths for our LAE samples and find that the EW distributions are best fit by exponential functions with scale lengths of w 0 = 53 ± 1, 65 ± 1, and 59 ± 1 Å, respectively.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:The Arecibo Observatory (AO) is a multidisciplinary research and education facility that is recognized worldwide as a leading facility in astronomy, planetary, and atmospheric and space sciences. AO's cornerstone research instrument was the 305-m William E. Gordon telescope. On December 1, 2020, the 305-m telescope collapsed and was irreparably damaged. In the three weeks following the collapse, AO's scientific and engineering staff and the AO users community initiated extensive discussions on the future of the observatory. The community is in overwhelming agreement that there is a need to build an enhanced, next-generation radar-radio telescope at the AO site. From these discussions, we established the set of science requirements the new facility should enable. These requirements can be summarized briefly as: 5 MW of continuous wave transmitter power at 2 - 6 GHz, 10 MW of peak transmitter power at 430 MHz (also at 220MHz under consideration), zenith angle coverage 0 to 48 deg, frequency coverage 0.2 to 30 GHz and increased Field-of-View. These requirements determine the unique specifications of the proposed new instrument. The telescope design concept we suggest consists of a compact array of fixed dishes on a tiltable, plate-like structure with a collecting area equivalent to a 300m dish. This concept, referred to as the Next Generation Arecibo Telescope (NGAT), meets all of the desired specifications and provides significant new science capabilities to all three research groups at AO. This whitepaper presents a sample of the wide variety of the science that can be achieved with the NGAT, the details of the telescope design concept and the need for the new telescope to be located at the AO site. We also discuss other AO science activities that interlock with the NGAT in the white paper.

Abstract:Off-axis telescopes with unobstructed pupils offer great advantages in terms of emissivity, throughput, and diffractionlimited energy concentration. For most telescope designs, implementation of an off-axis configuration imposes enormous penalties in terms of cost, optical difficulty and performance, and for this reason off-axis telescopes are rarely constructed. However, for the reflective Schmidt design, implementation of an off-axis configuration is very straightforward, and involves only a modest optical penalty. Moreover, the reflective Schmidt gets particular benefits, avoiding the obstruction of its large focal plane and support column, and gaining a highly accessible, gravity-invariant prime focus, capable of accommodating very large instrumentation. We present an off-axis f/8 reflective Schmidt design for the proposed 'KDUST' Chinese infrared telescope at Dome A on the Antarctic plateau, which offers simultaneous diffraction-limited NIR imaging over 1 degree, and close to diffraction-limited imaging out to 2 degrees for fibre-fed NIR spectroscopy.

Abstract:Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is one of the most powerful experimental techniques in condensed matter physics. Synchrotron ARPES, which uses photons with high flux and continuously tunable energy, has become particularly important. However, an excellent synchrotron ARPES system must have features such as a small beam spot, super-high energy resolution, and a user-friendly operation interface. A synchrotron beamline and an endstation (BL03U) were designed and constructed at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The beam spot size at the sample position is 7.5 ( V ) μm × 67 ( H ) μm, and the fundamental photon range is 7–165 eV; the ARPES system enables photoemission with an energy resolution of 2.67 meV at 21.2 eV. In addition, the ARPES system of this endstation is equipped with a six-axis cryogenic sample manipulator (the lowest temperature is 7 K) and is integrated with an oxide molecular beam epitaxy system and a scanning tunneling microscope, which can provide an advanced platform for in situ characterization of the fine electronic structure of condensed matter.

Abstract:Our article "Optical system for extremely large spectroscopic survey telescope" has been accepted on December 26, 2023, published online on March 7, 2024, and will be published in July 2024 Vol. 67 No. 7: 279511 in Sci. China-Phys. Mech. Astron. In this article, a pure reflecting optical system with a novel strip lensm (lens-prism) atmospheric dispersion corrector (S-ADC) is used, breaking through the glass material size limit of the lens atmospheric dispersion corrector, making possibility to have an aperture of 16 meters and a field of view 2.5 degrees for the spectral survey telescope. This paper gives a brief introduction to the previous article first, and then presents the progress of four important issues that were not discussed in depth in the previous article: (1) The study of Integrated Field Unit (IFU) observation of the galaxy extended sources in coudé focus; (2) The support structure and fabrication test of S-ADC; (3) A new special method of optical fiber positioning unit to resolve the problem of chief ray not perpendicular to the focal plane. (4) The preliminary telescope structure. Finally, this paper proposes to develop a spectroscopic survey telescope with a diameter of 14.5 meters. Its Nasmyth focus with a focal ratio of 4 or 3.5, a field of view diameter of 2.5 degrees (or 2 degrees), equipped with about 50,000 optical fibers, is mainly used for spectral survey of point sources. The coudé focus is used for integrated field spectral observation of extended sources (galaxies, etc.) with 4 arc-minutes and 2 arc-minutes field of view in diameter, equipped with about 50,000 or even more optical fibers. We refer to this Telescope simply as ESST (Extremely large Spectroscopic Survey Telescope).

Abstract:Two recent papers (Opt. Lett. 28 (2003) 179; Appl. Opt. 42 (2003) 6710) show that the conventional anomalous diffraction theory (ADT) can be reformulated by using the probability distribution function of the geometrical paths of rays inside a scattering particle. In this study we further enhance the new ADT formulation by introducing a dimensionless scaled projectile-length (l˜q) defined in the domain of the cumulative projected-area distribution (q) of a particle. The quantity l˜q contains essentially all the information about particle shape and aspect ratio, which, however, is independent of particle dimension (e.g., large and small spheres have the same l˜q). With this feature of l˜q, the present ADT algorithm is computationally efficient if a number of particle sizes and wavelengths are considered, particularly when a random orientation condition is assumed. Furthermore, according to the fundamental ADT assumption regarding the internal field within a scattering particle, we modify ADT on the basis of two rigorous relationships that relate the extinction and absorption cross sections to the internal field. Two tuning factors are introduced in the modified ADT solution, which can be determined for spheres by fitting the modified ADT results to the corresponding Lorenz-Mie solutions. For nonspherical particles, the tuning factors obtained for spheres can be used as surrogates. This approach is tested for the case of circular cylinders whose optical properties can be accurately calculated from the T-matrix method. Numerical computations show that the modified ADT solution is more accurate than its conventional ADT counterpart.
