Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) play an increasingly important role in military, public, and civilian applications, where providing connectivity to UAVs is crucial for its real-time control, video streaming, and data collection. Considering that cellular networks offer wide area, high speed, and secure wireless connectivity, cellular-connected UAVs have been considered as an appealing solution to provide UAV connectivity with enhanced reliability, coverage, throughput, and security. Due to the nature of UAVs mobility, the throughput, reliability and End-to-End (E2E) delay of UAVs communication under various flight heights, video resolutions, and transmission frequencies remain unknown. To evaluate these parameters, we develop a cellular-connected UAV testbed based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network with its uplink video transmission and downlink control\&command (CC) transmission. We also design algorithms for sending control signal and controlling UAV. The indoor experimental results provide fundamental insights for the cellular-connected UAV system design from the perspective of transmission frequency, adaptability, and link outage, respectively.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is: With the increasing importance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in military, public, and civilian applications, providing reliable real-time control, video streaming, and data collection for these vehicles has become crucial. However, traditional short-range communication technologies (such as WiFi and Bluetooth) have limitations in transmission range, inefficient multi-UAV coordination, and limited multi-UAV control capabilities, making it difficult to meet the demands of beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) communication. To overcome these issues, this paper proposes a UAV system based on cellular network connectivity, utilizing the wide-area coverage, high speed, and high security of cellular networks to enhance the communication reliability, coverage range, throughput, and security of UAVs. Specifically, the paper develops a cellular-connected UAV test platform based on Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks to evaluate communication performance parameters under different flight altitudes, video resolutions, and transmission frequencies, including throughput, reliability, and end-to-end (E2E) delay. The main research objectives include: 1. **Evaluating the communication performance of cellular-connected UAVs**: Through experimental testing, evaluate E2E delay, throughput, and reliability under different conditions. 2. **Designing and implementing control signal and video streaming algorithms**: Develop algorithms for sending control signals and real-time video streaming, and measure their performance. 3. **Providing design guidance for practical applications**: Based on experimental results, provide key insights for the practical design of cellular-connected UAV systems, particularly in terms of transmission frequency, adaptability, and link interruption. Through this research, the paper aims to provide theoretical and practical foundations for the design and optimization of future cellular-connected UAV systems.
