Abstract:The classical Minkowski formula is extended to spacelike codimension-two submanifolds in spacetimes which admit "hidden symmetry" from conformal Killing-Yano two-forms. As an application, we obtain an Alexandrov type theorem for spacelike codimension-two submanifolds in a static spherically symmetric spacetime: a codimension-two submanifold with constant normalized null expansion (null mean curvature) must lie in a shear-free (umbilical) null hypersurface. These results are generalized for higher order curvature invariants. In particular, the notion of mixed higher order mean curvature is introduced to highlight the special null geometry of the submanifold. Finally, Alexandrov type theorems are established for spacelike submanifolds with constant mixed higher order mean curvature, which are generalizations of hypersurfaces of constant Weingarten curvature in the Euclidean space.

Abstract:Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n > 2. The k-curvature, for k = 1,2,...,n, is defined as the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tenser. The k-Yamabe problem is to prove the existence of a conformal metric whose k-curvature is a constant. When k = 1, it reduces to the well-known Yamabe problem. Under the assumption that the metric is admissible, the existence of solutions is known for the case k = 2, n = 4, for locally conformally flat manifolds and for the cases k > n/2. In this paper we prove the solvability of the k-Yamabe problem in the remaining cases k ≤ n/2, under the hypothesis that the problem is variational. This includes all of the cases k = 2 as well as the locally conformally flat case.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a Gauss–Bonnet–Chern formula for real Finsler vector bundles with respect to any metric-compatible connection. The key idea is to modify any given metric-compatible connection to be a new metric-compatible connection with some special properties. As a corollary, a Gauss–Bonnet–Chern formula for Finsler manifolds with respect to any metric-compatible connection is established.

Abstract:In this article, we estimate the quasi-local energy with reference to the Minkowski spacetime [16,17], the anti-de Sitter spacetime [4], or the Schwarzschild spacetime [3]. In each case, the reference spacetime admits a conformal Killing-Yano 2-form which facilitates the application of the Minkowski formula in [15] to estimate the quasi-local energy. As a consequence of the positive mass theorems in [9,13] and the above estimate, we obtain rigidity theorems which characterize the Minkowski spacetime and the hyperbolic space.

Abstract:We provide a generalization of the Lie algebra of conformal Killing vector fields to conformal Killing-Yano forms. A new Lie bracket for conformal Killing-Yano forms that corresponds to slightly modified Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket of differential forms is proposed. We show that conformal Killing-Yano forms satisfy a graded Lie algebra in constant curvature manifolds. It is also proven that normal conformal Killing-Yano forms in Einstein manifolds also satisfy a graded Lie algebra. The constructed graded Lie algebras reduce to the graded Lie algebra of Killing-Yano forms and the Lie algebras of conformal Killing and Killing vector fields in special cases.

Abstract:The asymptotic conformal Yano--Killing tensor proposed in J. Jezierski, On the relation between metric and spin-2 formulation of linearized Einstein theory [GRG, in print (1994)] is analyzed for Schwarzschild metric and tensor equations defining this object are given. The result shows that the Schwarzschild metric (and other metrics which are asymptotically ``Schwarzschildean'' up to O(1/r^2) at spatial infinity) is among the metrics fullfilling stronger asymptotic conditions and supertranslations ambiguities disappear. It is also clear from the result that 14 asymptotic gravitational charges are well defined on the ``Schwarzschildean'' background.

A rigidity theorem for asymptotically flat static manifolds and its applications

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Minkowski-type inequality for asymptotically flat static manifolds $(M^{n}, g)$ with boundary and with dimension $ n < 8$ that was establishedby McCormick. First, we show that any asymptotically flat static $(M^{n},g)$ which achieves the equality and has CMC or equipotential boundary is isometric to a rotationally symmetric region of the Schwarzschild manifold. Then, we apply conformal techniques to derive a new Minkowski-type inequality for the level sets of bounded static potentials. Taken together, these provide a robust approach to detecting rotational symmetry of asymptotically flat static systems. As an application, we prove global uniqueness of static metric extensions for the Bartnik data induced by both Schwarzschild coordinate spheres and Euclidean coordinate spheres in dimension $n < 8$ under the natural condition of Schwarzschild stability. This generalizes an earlier result of Miao. We also establish uniqueness for equipotential photon surfaces with small Einstein-Hilbert energy. This is interesting to compare with other recent uniqueness results for static photon surfaces and black holes.

Abstract:On a compact Riemannian manifold M with boundary Y , we express the log of the zeta-determinant of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator acting on q -forms on Y as the difference of the log of the zeta-determinant of the Laplacian on q -forms on M with the absolute boundary condition and that of the Laplacian with the Dirichlet boundary condition with an additional term which is expressed by curvature tensors. When the dimension of M is 2 and 3, we compute these terms explicitly. We also discuss the value of the zeta function at zero associated to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator by using a metric rescaling method. As an application, we recover the result of the conformal invariance obtained in Guillarmou and Guillope (Int Math Res Not IMRN 2007(22):rnm099, 2007) when .

Abstract:We establish a one-to-one correspondence between Kähler metrics in a given conformal class and parallel sections of a certain vector bundle with conformally invariant connection, where the parallel sections satisfy a set of non--linear algebraic constraints that we describe. The vector bundle captures 2-form prolongations and is isomorphic to $\Lambda^3(\cT)$, where ${\cT}$ is the tractor bundle of conformal geometry, but the resulting connection differs from the normal tractor connection by curvature terms. Our analysis leads to a set of obstructions for a Riemannian metric to be conformal to a Kähler metric. In particular we find an explicit algebraic condition for a Weyl tensor which must hold if there exists a conformal Killing-Yano tensor, which is a necessary condition for a metric to be conformal to Kähler. This gives an invariant characterisation of algebraically special Riemannian metrics of type $D$ in dimensions higher than four.

Abstract:The integrability conditions for the existence of a conformal Killing–Yano tensor of arbitrary order are worked out in all dimensions and expressed in terms of the Weyl tensor. As a consequence, the integrability conditions for the existence of a Killing–Yano tensor are also obtained. By means of such conditions, it is shown that in certain Einstein spaces one can use a conformal Killing–Yano tensor of order p to generate a Killing–Yano tensor of order (p-1). Finally, it is proved that in maximally symmetric spaces the covariant derivative of a Killing–Yano tensor is a closed conformal Killing–Yano tensor and that every conformal Killing–Yano tensor is uniquely decomposed as the sum of a Killing–Yano tensor and a closed conformal Killing–Yano tensor.

Abstract:We identify an anisotropic divergence-free conformal Killing tensor $K_{jl}$ for static spherically symmetric spacetimes, and write the conformal Killing gravity equations as Einstein equations augmented by this tensor. The field equations are of second order: this fact allows for analytic solutions and considerably simplifies the derivation of results of previous studies based on the original Harada equations. In particular, we prove the equivalence of the known third order field equations, with the second order ones obtained by us in the conformal Killing parametrization. The structure of the Ricci tensor and of the conformal Killing tensor are compatible with both anisotropic fluid sources and (non)-linear electrodynamics. We reobtain covariantly and in simple steps the general static spherical solutions for vacuum and linear electrodynamics. Moreover we recover the purely magnetic Lagrangian functions that induce metrics of interest for black holes.

Abstract:Methods are presented for finding Killing-Yano tensors, conformal Killing-Yano tensors, and conformal Killing vectors in spacetimes with a hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector. These methods are similar to a method developed by the authors for finding Killing tensors. In all cases one decomposes both the tensor and the equation it satisfies into pieces along the Killing vector and pieces orthogonal to the Killing vector. Solving the separate equations that result from this decomposition requires less computing than integrating the original equation. In each case, examples are given to illustrate the method.

Abstract:We have established (see Shiohama and Xu in J. Geom. Anal. 7:377–386, 1997; Lemma) an integral formula on the absolute Lipschitz-Killing curvature and critical points of height functions of an isometrically immersed compact Riemannian n-manifold into R n+q. Making use of this formula, we prove a topological sphere theorem and a differentiable sphere theorem for hypersurfaces with bounded L n/2 Ricci curvature norm in R n+1. We show that the theorems of Gauss-Bonnet-Chern, Chern-Lashof and the Willmore inequality are all its consequences.
Quasi-spherical metrics and the static Minkowski inequality

Abstract:We prove that equality in the Minkowski inequality for asymptotically flat static manifolds is achieved only by slices of Schwarzschild space. To show this, we establish uniqueness of *quasi-spherical* static metrics: rotationally symmetric regions of Schwarzschild are the only static vacuum metrics which are quasi-spherical with vanishing shear vector. In addition, we observe that the static Minkowski inequality extends to all dimensions for a connected boundary and to asymptotically flat static manifolds of any positive decay order. Altogether, this yields a robust rigidity criterion for Schwarzschild space. Using this criterion, we recover Israel's static black hole uniqueness theorem under this mild decay assumption. Likewise, the uniqueness theorems for photon surfaces and static metric extensions from the prequel extend to all dimensions under these weaker asymptotics. Finally, as a notable by-product of our analysis, we establish regularity of weak inverse mean curvature flow in asymptotically flat manifolds -- that is, a weak IMCF is eventually smooth in an arbitrary asymptotically flat background.

Abstract:We generalized Xiang, Qi and Wei's results on the M-eigenvalues of Riemann curvature tensor to higher dimensional conformal flat manifolds. The expression of M-eigenvalues and M-eigenvectors are found in our paper. As a special case, M-eigenvalues of conformal flat Einstein manifold have also been discussed, and the conformal the invariance of M-eigentriple has been found. We also discussed the relationship between M-eigenvalue and sectional curvature of a Riemannian manifold. We proved that the M-eigenvalue can determine the Riemann curvature tensor uniquely and generalize the real M-eigenvalue to complex cases. In the last part of our paper, we give an example to compute the M-eigentriple of de Sitter spacetime which is well-known in general relativity.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation on compact Kähler manifold with non-negative orthogonal bisectional curvature. We prove that the curvatures of deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills metrics are parallel with respect to the background metric if there exists a positive constant C such that $$\begin{aligned} -\frac{1}{C}\omega<\sqrt{-1}F<C\omega . \end{aligned}$$ We also consider the self-shrinker over $$\mathbb {C}^n$$ to the corresponding parabolic flow. We prove that the self-shrinker over $${\mathbb {C}}^n$$ is a quadratic polynomial function. At last, we show a similar rigidity theorem for the J-equations and the self-shrinkers over $${\mathbb {C}}^n$$ to J-flow.

Abstract:Let ℚ3 be the common conformal compactification space of the Lorentzian space forms $\mathbb{R}^{3}_{1} ,\mathbb{S}^{3}_{1} \;{\text{and}}\;\mathbb{H}^{3}_{1} $. We study the conformal geometry of space-like surfaces in ℚ3. It is shown that any conformal CMC-surface in ℚ3 must be conformally equivalent to a constant mean curvature surface in $\mathbb{R}^{3}_{1} ,\mathbb{S}^{3}_{1} \;{\text{and}}\;\mathbb{H}^{3}_{1} $. We also show that if x : M → ℚ3 is a space-like Willmore surface whose conformal metric g has constant curvature K, then either K = −1 and x is conformally equivalent to a minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^{3}_{1}$, or K = 0 and x is conformally equivalent to the surface $\mathbb{H}^{1} {\left( {\frac{1}{{{\sqrt 2 }}}} \right)} \times \mathbb{H}^{1} {\left( {\frac{1}{{{\sqrt 2 }}}} \right)}\;{\text{in}}\;\mathbb{H}^{3}_{1} .$

Abstract:We construct the CR invariant canonical contact form can( J ) on scalar positive spherical CR manifold ( M , J ), which is the CR analogue of canonical metric on locally conformally flat manifold constructed by Habermann and Jost. We also construct another canonical contact form on the Kleinian manifold Ω(Γ)/Γ, where Γ is a convex cocompact subgroup of Aut CR S 2 n +1 = PU ( n +1,1) and Ω(Γ) is the discontinuity domain of Γ. This contact form can be used to prove that Ω(Γ)/Γ is scalar positive (respectively, scalar negative, or scalar vanishing) if and only if the critical exponent δ(Γ)< n (respectively, δ(Γ)> n , or δ(Γ)= n ). This generalizes Nayatani’s result for convex cocompact subgroups of SO ( n +1,1). We also discuss the connected sum of spherical CR manifolds.
