Abstract:As is well-known, the separation of variables in second order partial differential equations (PDEs) for physical problems with spherical symmetry usually leads to Cauchy's differential equation for the radial coordinate $r$ and Legendre's differential equation for the polar angle $\theta$. For eigenvalues of the form $n\,(n+1)$, $n \ge 0\,$ being an integer, Legendre's equation admits certain polynomials $P_n(\cos{\theta})$ as solutions, which form a complete set of continuous orthogonal functions for all $\theta \in [0,\pi]$. This allows us to take the polynomials $P_n(x)$, where $x = \cos{\theta}$, as a basis for the Fourier-Legendre series expansion of any function $f(x)$ continuous by parts over $\,x \in [-1,1]$. These lecture notes correspond to the end of my course on Mathematical Methods for Physics, when I did derive the differential equations and solutions for physical problems with spherical symmetry. For those interested in Number Theory, I have included an application of shifted Legendre polynomials in \emph{irrationality proofs}, following a method introduced by Beukers to show that $\zeta{(2)}$ and $\zeta{(3)}$ are irrational numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide families of second order non-linear partial differential equations, describing pseudospherical surfaces (pss equations), with the property of having local isometric immersions in E^3, with principal curvatures depending on finite-order jets of solutions of the differential equation. These equations occupy a particularly special place amongst pss equations, since a series of recent papers [2, 7, 11, 12, 13], on several classes of pss equations, seemed to suggest that only the sine-Gordon equation had the above property. Explicit examples are given, which include the short pulse equation and some generalizations.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain eigenvalue estimates for a larger class of elliptic differential operators in divergence form on a bounded domain in a complete Riemannian manifold isometrically immersed in Euclidean space. As an application, we give eigenvalue estimates in the Gaussian shrinking soliton, and we find a domain that makes the behavior of these estimates similar to the estimates for the case of the Laplacian. Moreover, we also give an answer to the generalized conjecture of Pólya.

Abstract:The following notes are intended to make a small digression on the topics mentioned in the title of the same, since these were not addressed in the past tribute by the Institute of Physics of the UdeA. We believe more than platitude try to justify the importance and effectiveness in the development of mathematics and physics during the eighteenth century and present such issues, therefore a brief description of the methods and problems attacked by Euler and his contemporaries using the heuristics. Note in advance that they constitute a strong impoverished attempt to honor the memory of who is considered the Shakespeare of Mathematics: Universal, rich in detail and inexhaustible.

Abstract:Several different problems make the study of the so called Lyapunov type inequalities of great interest, both in pure and applied mathematics. Although the original historical motivation was the study of the stability properties of the Hill equation (which applies to many problems in physics and engineering), other questions that arise in systems at resonance, crystallography, isoperimetric problems, Rayleigh type quotients, etc. lead to the study of $L_p$ Lyapunov inequalities ($1\leq p\leq \infty$) for differential equations. In this work we review some recent results on these kinds of questions which can be formulated as optimal control problems. In the case of Ordinary Differential Equations, we consider periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions at higher eigenvalues and by using a more accurate version of the Sturm separation theory, an explicit optimal result is obtained. Then, we establish Lyapunov inequalities for systems of equations. To this respect, a key point is the characterization of the best $L^p$ Lyapunov constant for the scalar given problem, as a minimum of some especial (constrained or unconstrained) variational problems defined in appropriate subsets of the usual Sobolev spaces. For Partial Differential Equations on a domain $\Omega \subset \real^N$, it is proved that the relation between the quantities $p$ and $N/2$ plays a crucial role in order to obtain nontrivial $L_p$ Lyapunov type inequalities (which are called Sobolev inequalities by many authors). This fact shows a deep difference with respect to the ordinary case. Combining the linear results with Schauder fixed point theorem, we can obtain some new results about the existence and uniqueness of solutions for resonant nonlinear problems for ODE or PDE, both in the scalar case and in the case of systems of equations

Abstract:There are many numerical methods for solving partial different equations (PDEs) on manifolds such as classical implicit, finite difference, finite element, and isogeometric analysis methods which aim at improving the interoperability between finite element method and computer aided design (CAD) software. However, these approaches have difficulty when the domain has singularities since the solution at the singularity may be multivalued. This paper develops a novel numerical approach to solve elliptic PDEs on real, closed, connected, orientable, and almost smooth algebraic curves and surfaces. Our method integrates numerical algebraic geometry, differential geometry, and a finite difference scheme which is demonstrated on several examples.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of $L_p$ Lyapunov-type inequalities for linear systems of equations with Neumann boundary conditions and for any constant $p \geq 1$. We consider ordinary and elliptic problems. The results obtained in the linear case are combined with Schauder fixed point theorem to provide new results about the existence and uniqueness of solutions for resonant nonlinear problems. The proof uses in a fundamental way the nontrivial relation between the best Lyapunov constants and the minimum value of some especial minimization problems.

Abstract:These are the notes from a course of five lectures at the 2009 Park City Math Institute. The focus is on elliptic curves over function fields over finite fields. In the first three lectures, we explain the main classical results (mainly due to Tate) on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in this context and its connection to the Tate conjecture about divisors on surfaces. This is preceded by a "Lecture 0" on background material. In the remaining two lectures, we discuss more recent developments on elliptic curves of large rank and constructions of explicit points in high rank situations.

Solving first order differential equations presenting elementary functions

Abstract:We have already dealt with the problem of solving First Order Differential Equations (1ODEs) presenting elementary functions before in [1, 2]. In this present paper, we have established solid theoretical basis through a relation between the 1ODE we are dealing with and a rational second order ordinary differential equation, presenting a Liouvillian first Integral. Here, we have expanded the results in [3], where we have establish a theoretical background to deal with rational second order ordinary differential equations (2ODEs) via the S-function method. Using this generalisation and other results hereby introduced, we have produced a method to integrate the 1ODE under scrutiny. Our methods and algorithm are capable to deal efficiently with chaotic systems, determining regions of integrability.
