Abstract:We study the average height of random trees generated by leaf-centric binary tree sources as introduced by Zhang, Yang and Kieffer. A leaf-centric binary tree source induces for every $n \geq 2$ a probability distribution on the set of binary trees with $n$ leaves. Our results generalize a result by Devroye, according to which the average height of a random binary search tree of size $n$ is in $\mathcal{O}(\log n)$.

Abstract:Three standard subtree transfer operations for binary trees, used in particular for phylogenetic trees, are: tree bisection and reconnection ($TBR$), subtree prune and regraft ($SPR$) and rooted subtree prune and regraft ($rSPR$). For a pair of leaf-labelled binary trees with $n$ leaves, the maximum number of such moves required to transform one into the other is $n-\Theta(\sqrt{n})$, extending a result of Ding, Grunewald and Humphries. We show that if the pair is chosen uniformly at random, then the expected number of moves required to transfer one into the other is $n-\Theta(n^{2/3})$. These results may be phrased in terms of agreement forests: we also give extensions for more than two binary trees.

Abstract:We prove limit theorems for sums of functions of subtrees of binary search trees and random recursive trees. In particular, we give simple new proofs of the fact that the number of fringe trees of size $ k=k_n $ in the binary search tree and the random recursive tree (of total size $ n $) asymptotically has a Poisson distribution if $ k\rightarrow\infty $, and that the distribution is asymptotically normal for $ k=o(\sqrt{n}) $. Furthermore, we prove similar results for the number of subtrees of size $ k $ with some required property $ P $, for example the number of copies of a certain fixed subtree $ T $. Using the Cram\'er-Wold device, we show also that these random numbers for different fixed subtrees converge jointly to a multivariate normal distribution. As an application of the general results, we obtain a normal limit law for the number of $\ell$-protected nodes in a binary search tree or random recursive tree. The proofs use a new version of a representation by Devroye, and Stein's method (for both normal and Poisson approximation) together with certain couplings.

Abstract:The branching structure of uniform recursive trees is investigated in this paper. Using the method of sums for a sequence of independent random variables, the distribution law of η n , the number of branches of the uniform recursive tree of size n are given first. It is shown that the strong law of large numbers, the central limit theorem and the law of iterated logarithm for η n follow easily from this method. Next it is shown that η n and ξ n , the depth of vertex n, have the same distribution, and the distribution law of ζ n,m , the number of branches of size m, is also given, whose asymptotic distribution is the Poisson distribution with parameter $\lambda = \frac{1}{m}$. In addition, the joint distribution and the asymptotic joint distribution of the numbers of various branches are given. Finally, it is proved that the size of the biggest branch tends to infinity almost sure as n → ∞.
Finite Sample Complexity Analysis of Binary Segmentation

Abstract:Binary segmentation is the classic greedy algorithm which recursively splits a sequential data set by optimizing some loss or likelihood function. Binary segmentation is widely used for changepoint detection in data sets measured over space or time, and as a sub-routine for decision tree learning. In theory it should be extremely fast for $N$ data and $K$ splits, $O(N K)$ in the worst case, and $O(N \log K)$ in the best case. In this paper we describe new methods for analyzing the time and space complexity of binary segmentation for a given finite $N$, $K$, and minimum segment length parameter. First, we describe algorithms that can be used to compute the best and worst case number of splits the algorithm must consider. Second, we describe synthetic data that achieve the best and worst case and which can be used to test for correct implementation of the algorithm. Finally, we provide an empirical analysis of real data which suggests that binary segmentation is often close to optimal speed in practice.

Abstract:The eccentricity index of a graph is the sum of the eccentricities of all vertices in the graph. A segment S of a tree T is a subgraph isomorphic to a non-trivial path where all internal vertices have degree 2 in T and the end-vertices are branching vertices or leaves. The segment sequence of a tree is the sequence of the lengths of all segments in a tree. In this paper, we characterise trees of a given segment sequence with minimum eccentricity index. We show that in the family of trees of a given segment sequence, the tree with minimum eccentricity index is the unique 'starlike' tree (a tree with one branching vertex).

We prove similar looking formulas for other families of trees whose nodes are embedded in Z. We also refine these formulas by taking into account the number of nodes at abscissa j whose parent lies at abscissa i, and/or the number of vertices at abscissa i having a prescribed number of children at abscissa j, for all i and j. Our proofs are bijective.

Abstract:We introduce an "intermediate branching number"(IBN) which captures the branching of intermediate growth trees, similar in spirit to the well-studied branching number of exponential growth trees. We show that the IBN is the critical threshold for several random processes on trees, and analyze the IBN on some examples of interest. Our main result is an algorithm to find spherically symmetric trees with large IBN inside some permutation wreath products. We demonstrate the usefulness of these trees to the study of intermediate growth groups by using them to get the first tight bounds for the firefighter problem on some inetrmediate growth groups.

Abstract:For any real-valued $k > 1$, we consider the tree rooted at 0, where each positive integer $n$ has parent $\lfloor\frac{n}{k}\rfloor$. The average number of children per node is $k$, thus this definition gives a natural way to extend $k$-ary trees to irrational $k$. We focus on the sequence $r_d$: the count of nodes at depth $d$. We first prove there exists some constant $\rho(k)$ such that $r_d \sim \rho(k)\cdot k^d$. We then study a family of values $k=\frac{a + \sqrt{a+4b}}{2}$, where we prove the sequence satisfies the exact recurrence $r_d = a\cdot r_{d-1} + b \cdot r_{d-2}$. This generalizes a special case when $k$ is the golden ratio and $r_d$ is the Fibonacci sequence.

Abstract:We study a model of random binary trees grown "by the leaves" in the style of Luczak and Winkler. If $\tau_n$ is a uniform plane binary tree of size $n$, Luczak and Winkler, and later explicitly Caraceni and Stauffer, constructed a measure $\nu_{\tau_n}$ such that the tree obtained by adding a cherry on a leaf sampled according to $\nu_{\tau_n}$ is still uniformly distributed on the set of all plane binary trees with size $n+1$. It turns out that the measure $\nu_{\tau_n}$, which we call the leaf-growth measure, is noticeably different from the uniform measure on the leaves of the tree $\tau_n$. In fact, we prove that, as $n \to \infty$, with high probability it is almost entirely supported by a subset of only $n^{3 ( 2 - \sqrt{3})+o(1)} \approx n^{0.8038...}$ leaves. In the continuous setting, we construct the scaling limit of this measure, which is a probability measure on the Brownian Continuum Random Tree supported by a fractal set of dimension $ 6 (2 - \sqrt{3})$. We also compute the full (discrete) multifractal spectrum. This work is a first step towards understanding the diffusion limit of the discrete leaf-growth procedure.

The Critical Beta-splitting Random Tree: Heights and Related Results

Abstract:In the critical beta-splitting model of a random $n$-leaf binary tree, leaf-sets are recursively split into subsets, and a set of $m$ leaves is split into subsets containing $i$ and $m-i$ leaves with probabilities proportional to $1/{i(m-i)}$. We study the continuous-time model in which the holding time before that split is exponential with rate $h_{m-1}$, the harmonic number. We (sharply) evaluate the first two moments of the time-height $D_n$ and of the edge-height $L_n$ of a uniform random leaf (that is, the length of the path from the root to the leaf), and prove the corresponding CLTs. We find the limiting value of the correlation between the heights of two random leaves of the same tree realization, and analyze the expected number of splits necessary for a set of $t$ leaves to partially or completely break away from each other. We give tail bounds for the time-height and the edge-height of the {\em tree}, that is the maximal leaf heights. We show that there is a limit distribution for the size of a uniform random subtree, and derive the asymptotics of the mean size. Our proofs are based on asymptotic analysis of the attendant (sum-type) recurrences. The essential idea is to replace such a recursive equality by a pair of recursive inequalities for which matching asymptotic solutions can be found, allowing one to bound, both ways, the elusive explicit solution of the recursive equality. This reliance on recursive inequalities necessitates usage of Laplace transforms rather than Fourier characteristic functions.

Abstract:An infection spreads in a binary tree of height n as follows: initially, each leaf is either infected by one of k states or it is not infected at all. The infection state of each leaf is independently distributed according to a probability vector p=(p_1,...,p_{k+1}). The remaining nodes become infected or not via annihilation and coalescence: nodes whose two children have the same state (infected or not) are infected (or not) by this state; nodes whose two children have different states are not infected; nodes whose only one of the children is infected are infected by this state. In this note we characterize, for every p, the limiting distribution at the root node of the tree as the height n goes to infinity. We also consider a variant of the model when k=2 and a mutation can happen, with a fixed probability q, at each infection step. We characterize, in terms of p and q, the limiting distribution at the root node of the tree as the height n goes to infinity. The distribution at the root node is driven by a dynamical system, and the proofs rely on the analysis of this dynamics.

Abstract:The Horton-Strahler number of a rooted tree $T$ is the height of the tallest complete binary tree that can be homeomorphically embedded in $T$. The number of full binary trees with $n$ internal vertices and Horton-Strahler number $s$ is known to be the same as the number of Dyck paths of length $2n$ whose height $h$ satisfies $\lfloor \log_2(1+h)\rfloor=s$. In this paper, we present a new bijective proof of the above result, that in fact strengthens and refines it as follows. We introduce a sequence of trees $(\tau_i,i \ge 0)$ which "interpolates" the complete binary trees, in the sense that $\tau_{2^h-1}$ is the complete binary tree of height $h$ for all $h \ge 0$, and $\tau_{i+1}$ strictly contains $\tau_i$ for all $i \ge 0$. Defining $\mathcal{S}(T)$ to be the largest $i$ for which $\tau_i$ can be homeomorphically embedded in $T$, we then show that the number of full binary trees $T$ with $n$ internal vertices and with $\mathcal{S}(T)=h$ is the same as the number of Dyck paths of length $2n$ with height $h$. (We call $\mathcal{S}(T)$ the refined Horton-Strahler number of $T$.) Our proof is bijective and relies on a recursive decomposition of binary trees (resp. Dyck paths) into subtrees with strictly smaller refined Horton-Strahler number (resp. subpaths with strictly smaller height). In a subsequent paper, we will show that the bijection has a continuum analogue, which transforms a Brownian continuum random tree into a Brownian excursion and under which (a continuous analogue of) the refined Horton-Strahler number of the tree becomes the height of the excursion.

It is known that the size of the largest common subtree (i.e., the maximum agreement subtree) of two independent random binary trees with [math] given labeled leaves is of order between [math] and [math]. We improve the lower bound to order [math] by constructing a common subtree recursively and proving a lower bound for its asymptotic growth. The construction modifies an algorithm proposed by D. Aldous by splitting the tree at the centroid and proceeding recursively.

Abstract:We are interested in the local limits of families of random trees that satisfy the Markov branching property, which is fulfilled by a wide range of models. Loosely, this property entails that given the sizes of the sub-trees above the root, these sub-trees are independent and their distributions only depend upon their respective sizes. The laws of the elements of a Markov branching family are characterised by a sequence of probability distributions on the sets of integer partitions which describes how the sizes of the sub-trees above the root are distributed. We prove that under some natural assumption on this sequence of probabilities, when their sizes go to infinity, the trees converge in distribution to an infinite tree which also satisfies the Markov branching property. Furthermore, when this infinite tree has a single path from the root to infinity, we give conditions to ensure its convergence in distribution under appropriate rescaling of its distance and counting measure to a self-similar fragmentation tree with immigration. In particular, this allows us to determine how, in this infinite tree, the "volume" of the ball of radius $R$ centred at the root asymptotically grows with $R$. Our unified approach will allow us to develop various new applications, in particular to different models of growing trees and cut-trees, and to recover known results. An illustrative example lies in the study of Galton-Watson trees: the distribution of a critical Galton-Watson tree conditioned on its size converges to that of Kesten's tree when the size grows to infinity. If furthermore, the offspring distribution has finite variance, under adequate rescaling, Kesten's tree converges to Aldous' self-similar CRT and the total size of the $R$ first generations asymptotically behaves like $R^2$.

Abstract:We consider a continuous time random walk on the rooted binary tree of depth $n$ with all transition rates equal to one and study its cover time, namely the time until all vertices of the tree have been visited. We prove that, normalized by $2^{n+1} n$ and then centered by $(\log 2) n - \log n$, the cover time admits a weak limit as the depth of the tree tends to infinity. The limiting distribution is identified as that of a Gumbel random variable with rate one, shifted randomly by the logarithm of the sum of the limits of the derivative martingales associated with two negatively correlated discrete Gaussian free fields on the infinite version of the tree. The existence of the limit and its overall form were conjectured in the literature. Our approach is quite different from those taken in earlier works on this subject and relies in great part on a comparison with the extremal landscape of the discrete Gaussian free field on the tree.

Abstract:The evolution of aligned DNA sequence sites is generally modeled by a Markov process operating along the edges of a phylogenetic tree. It is well known that the probability distribution on the site patterns at the tips of the tree determines the tree and its branch lengths. However, the number of patterns is typically much larger than the number of edges, suggesting considerable redundancy in the branch length estimation. In this paper we ask whether the probabilities of just the `edge-specific' patterns (the ones that correspond to a change of state on a single edge) suffice to recover the branch lengths of the tree, under a symmetric 2-state Markov process. We first show that this holds provided the branch lengths are sufficiently short, by applying the inverse function theorem. We then consider whether this restriction to short branch lengths is necessary, and show that for trees with up to four leaves it can be lifted. This leaves open the interesting question of whether this holds in general.
