Abstract:We review the literature about reaching agreement in quantum networks, also called quantum consensus. After a brief introduction to the key feature of quantum computing, allowing the reader with no quantum theory background to have minimal tools to understand, we report a formal definition of quantum consensus and the protocols proposed. Proposals are classified according to the quantum feature used to achieve agreement.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is reaching consensus (i.e., quantum consensus) in quantum networks. With the development of quantum computing technology and the prospect of the quantum Internet, it has become particularly important to study how to implement an effective consensus mechanism in quantum distributed systems. Traditional consensus protocols are mainly designed for classical computer networks. However, due to its unique quantum properties (such as superposition states, entangled states, the no - cloning theorem, etc.), quantum networks require new consensus algorithms to ensure that nodes can reach an agreement efficiently and securely. Specifically, the paper reviews the existing quantum consensus research and classifies different quantum consensus protocols. These protocols are different according to the utilized quantum properties, including consensus based on symmetric states, consensus based on entanglement, consensus based on measurement, and consensus based on quantum key distribution (QKD). In this way, the paper aims to provide readers with a comprehensive overview of the quantum consensus field. In particular, for those without a background in quantum mechanics, it provides basic tools for understanding quantum formalism. In addition, the paper also discusses the potential applications of quantum consensus in quantum distributed ledgers (such as quantum blockchains), which may be a direction for further research in the future. In summary, the main objective of this paper is to introduce the concepts, definitions, and existing protocols of quantum consensus to promote the research and development of this emerging field.
