Abstract:Negative refraction of acoustic waves is demonstrated through underwater experiments conducted at ultrasonic frequencies on a 3D locally resonant acoustic metafluid made of soft porous silicone-rubber micro-beads suspended in a yield-stress fluid. By measuring the refracted angle of the acoustic beam transmitted through this metafluid shaped as a prism, we determine the acoustic index to water according to Snell's law. These experimental data are then compared with an excellent agreement to calculations performed in the framework of Multiple Scattering Theory showing that the emergence of negative refraction depends on the volume fraction $\Phi$ of the resonant micro-beads. For diluted metafluid ($\Phi=3\%$), only positive refraction occurs whereas negative refraction is demonstrated over a broad frequency band with concentrated metafluid ($\Phi=17\%$).

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to achieve the negative refraction phenomenon in three - dimensional acoustic metamaterials. Specifically, the author experimentally demonstrated the negative refraction phenomenon observed in a three - dimensional locally resonant acoustic metafluid (metafluid) in which soft porous silicone rubber microbeads are suspended in a yield - stress fluid at ultrasonic frequencies. The focus of the study is to determine its acoustic index relative to water by measuring the refraction angle of the acoustic beam after passing through this prism - like metafluid and analyze it according to Snell's law. The experimental data were compared with the calculation results based on the Multiple Scattering Theory, showing that the occurrence of negative refraction depends on the volume fraction (\(\Phi\)) of the resonant microbeads. For the diluted metafluid (\(\Phi = 3\%\)), only positive refraction was observed; while for the concentrated metafluid (\(\Phi = 17\%\)), the negative refraction phenomenon was observed in a wide frequency range.
