Abstract:One usually defines the Brown-York energy for a 2-surface embedded in a spacelike 3-slice as an integration of the mean curvature of the 2-surface isometrically embedded into the 3-slice, with a proper reference 3-space. We demonstrate that this naive definition is ill for stationary spacetimes. As an example, we investigate the Kerr-Newman spacetime in detail. We show that the naive definition of the Brown-York energy is not a component of the Brown-York boundary stress tensor, and thus deviates from the original idea of Brown and York. Furthermore, we present the exact form of the Brown-York energy for the Kerr-Newman spacetime with the proper reference.

Abstract:In this work, a null geometric approach to the Brown-York quasilocal formalism is used to derive an integral law that describes the rate of change of mass and/or radiative energy escaping through a dynamical horizon of a non-stationary spacetime. The result thus obtained shows - in accordance with previous results from the theory of dynamical horizons of Ashtekar et al. - that the rate at which energy is transferred from the bulk to the boundary of spacetime through the dynamical horizon becomes zero at equilibrium, where said horizon becomes non-expanding and null. Moreover, it reveals previously unrecognized quasilocal corrections to the Bondi mass-loss formula arising from the combined variation of bulk and boundary components of the Brown-York Hamiltonian, given in terms of a bulk-to-boundary inflow term akin to an expression derived in an earlier paper by the author [#huber2022remark]. For clarity, this is discussed with reference to the Generalized Vaidya family of spacetimes, for which derived integral expressions take a particularly simple form.

Abstract:Classical black holes and event horizons are highly non-local objects, defined in terms of the causal past of future null infinity. Alternative, (quasi)local definitions are often used in mathematical, quantum, and numerical relativity. These include apparent, trapping, isolated, and dynamical horizons, all of which are closely associated to two-surfaces of zero outward null expansion. In this paper we show that three-surfaces which can be foliated with such two-surfaces are suitable boundaries in both a quasilocal action and a phase space formulation of general relativity. The resulting formalism provides expressions for the quasilocal energy and angular momentum associated with the horizon. The values of the energy and angular momentum are in agreement with those derived from the isolated and dynamical horizon frameworks.

Abstract:The Brown-York stress tensor provides a means for defining quasilocal gravitational charges in subregions bounded by a timelike hypersurface. We consider the generalization of this stress tensor to null hypersurfaces. Such a stress tensor can be derived from the on-shell subregion action of general relativity associated with a Dirichlet variational principle, which fixes an induced Carroll structure on the null boundary. The formula for the mixed-index tensor $T{}^i{}_j$ takes a remarkably simple form that is manifestly independent of the choice of auxiliary null vector at the null surface, and we compare this expression to previous proposals for null Brown-York stress tensors. The stress tensor we obtain satisfies a covariant conservation equation with respect to any connection induced from a rigging vector at the hypersurface, as a result of the null constraint equations. For transformations that act covariantly on the boundary structures, the Brown-York charges coincide with canonical charges constructed from a version of the Wald-Zoupas procedure. For anomalous transformations, the charges differ by an intrinsic functional of the boundary geometry, which we explicity verify for a set of symmetries associated with finite null hypersurfaces. Applications of the null Brown-York stress tensor to symmetries of asymptotically flat spacetimes and celestial holography are discussed.

Abstract:There exist constant radial surfaces, S, that may not be globally embeddable in R-3 for Kerr spacetimes with a > root 3M/2. To compute the Brown and York (B-Y) quasi-local energy (QLE), one must isometrically embed S into R3. On the other hand, the Wang and Yau (W-Y) QLE embeds S into Minkowski space. In this paper, we examine the W-Y QLE for surfaces that may or may not be globally embeddable in R3. We show that their energy functional, E[tau], has a critical point at tau = 0 for all constant radial surfaces in t = constant hypersurfaces using Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. For tau = 0, the W-Y QLE reduces to the B-Y QLE. To examine the W-Y QLE in these cases, we write the functional explicitly in terms of t under the assumption that t is only a function of.. We then use a Fourier expansion of tau (theta) to explore the values of E[tau (theta)] in the space of coefficients. From our analysis, we discovered an open region of complex values for E[tau (theta)]. We also study the physical properties of the smallest real value of E[tau (theta)], which lies on the boundary separating real and complex energies.
Spacetime structure near generic horizons and soft hair

Abstract:We explore the spacetime structure near non-extremal horizons in any spacetime dimension greater than two and discover a wealth of novel results: 1. Different boundary conditions are specified by a functional of the dynamical variables, describing inequivalent interactions at the horizon with a thermal bath. 2. The near horizon algebra of a set of boundary conditions, labeled by a parameter $s$, is given by the semi-direct sum of diffeomorphisms at the horizon with "spin-$s$ supertranslations". For $s=1$ we obtain the first explicit near horizon realization of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra. 3. For another choice, we find a non-linear extension of the Heisenberg algebra, generalizing recent results in three spacetime dimensions. This algebra allows to recover the aforementioned (linear) ones as composites. 4. These examples allow to equip not only black holes, but also cosmological horizons with soft hair. We also discuss implications of soft hair for black hole thermodynamics and entropy.

Abstract:In this paper, we will study the limiting behavior of the Brown York mass of the coordinate spheres in an asymptotically flat manifold. Limiting behaviors of volumes of regions related to coordinate spheres are also obtained, including a discussion on the isoperimetric mass introduced by Huisken [14]. We will also study expansions of the Brown-York mass and the Hawking mass of geodesic spheres with center at a fixed point p of a 3-manifold. Some geometric consequences will be derived.

Abstract:We explore the Wang and Yau (W-Y) quasi-local energy (QLE) for a family of spacelike surfaces in a Kerr spacetime. Their approach is an extension of the Hamilton-Jacobi approach developed by Brown and York (B-Y). W-Y broadened their definition for a surface $\mathcal{S}$ from its isometric embedding into Euclidean 3-space to its isometric embedding into Minkowski spacetime. This extension solves earlier problems and provides a QLE for a larger class of surfaces in spacetimes. In order to explore this new definition of QLE we examine a family of spacelike 2-surfaces $\mathcal{S}_r$ of constant radii in a $t=constant$ hypersurface of Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. There exists a critical radius $r^*$ below which these 2-surfaces are not globally embeddable in Euclidean 3-space. Within this subcritical region, the original application of B-Y is not defined. However, since these surfaces are time-flat, $\tau=0$ is a solution to the W-Y Euler-Lagrange equation and reproduces the same complex-valued QLE of B-Y. These surfaces are excluded from a W-Y positivity condition. Nevertheless, we see no reason why such surfaces should not have a well defined QLE. Therefore, we explore their formalism in this domain to gain clues for its possible extension. We find that W-Y QLE functional yields a global minimum for each of these subcritical surfaces and it is not a solution of the W-Y Euler-Lagrange equation. Our numerical results suggest that this global QLE minimum lies on a boundary separating admissible energies from inadmissible complex energies.
Horizon entanglement area law from regular black hole thermodynamics

Abstract:We investigate the thermodynamics of regular black hole configurations via quantum analogs of entropy and energy -- namely, the entanglement entropy and entanglement energy -- near the event horizon of Bardeen and Hayward black holes. Following standard approaches, we introduce a quantum scalar field propagating in such black hole spacetimes and discretize the field degrees of freedom on a lattice of spherical shells. We observe that, at leading order, the entanglement entropy associated with the scalar field is proportional to Bekestein-Hawking entropy, while the corresponding entanglement energy scales proportionally to Komar energy. We then compute the heat capacity in both scenarios, discussing the black hole stability conditions and the possible appearance of second-order phase transitions. Finally, we extend our analysis to the black hole core, showing that in this sector entanglement energy serves as a valuable tool towards discriminating between singular and regular solutions.

Abstract:In this work, we will study the boundary behaviors of a spacelike positive constant mean curvature surface in the Schwarzschild spacetime exterior to the black hole. We consider two boundaries: the future null infinity and the horizon. Suppose near , is the graph of a function in the form , where is the retarded null coordinate with and . Suppose the boundary value of at is a smooth function f on the unit sphere . If P is at , then f must satisfy a fourth order PDE on . If P is , then all the derivatives of P up to order three can be expressed in terms of f and its derivatives on . For the extrinsic geometry of , under certain conditions we obtain decay rate of the trace-free part of the second fundamental forms . In case decays fast enough, some further restrictions on f are given. For the intrinsic geometry, we show that under certain conditions, is asymptotically hyperbolic in the sense of Chruściel–Herzlich (Pac J Math 212(2):231–264, 2003). Near the horizon, we prove that under certain conditions, can be expressed as the graph of a function u which is smooth in and , and all its derivatives are determined by the boundary value u at . In particular, a Neumann-type condition is obtained. This may be related to a remark of Bartnik (in: Proc Centre Math Anal Austral Nat Univ, 1987). As for intrinsic geometry, we show that under certain conditions the inner boundary of given by is totally geodesic.

Abstract:The Thorne hoop conjecture is an attempt to make precise the notion that gravitational collapse occurs if enough energy is compressed into a small enough volume, with the "size" being defined by the circumference. We can make a precise statement of this form, in spherical symmetry, using the Brown-York mass as our measure of the energy. Consider a spherical 2-surface in a spherically symmetric spacetime. If the Brown-York mass M(BY) and the circumference C satisfy C<2 pi M(BY), then the system must either have emerged from a white hole or will collapse into a black hole. We show that no equivalent result can hold true using either the Liu-Yau mass M(LY) or the Wang-Yau mass M(WY). This forms a major obstacle to any attempt to establish a Thorne-type hoop theorem in the general case based on either the Liu-Yau or the Wang-Yau mass.
Extracting Dynamical Degrees of Freedom From the Quasi-Local Energy Term in the Gravitational Action

Abstract:It is shown that under proper conditions in an appropriate coordinate system with a suitable time slicing the Hamiltonian and the Einstein-Hilbert action including all necessary boundary terms can be written on shell in terms of the Brown-York quasi-local energy in the absence of matter. If matter is present the non-vanishing bulk term only consists of stress-energy. It is argued that the dynamical content of general relativity is stored in the quasi-local energy term. The results underscore the interpretation of the Brown-York quasi-local energy as the field energy of the gravitational field plus stress-energy. As an application we derive uncertainty relations of the time-energy kind which may be useful in the understanding of gravity induced quantum state reduction and the more conventional kind for conjugate variables. The latter is computed for a modified Vaidya metric which may be used in the investigation of black hole radiance. The boundary terms expressed as quasi-local energy cancel second derivatives in the action leaving only a square of a first derivative term in the chosen gauge which is desirable for a quantization of the action.

Horizon thermodynamics and cosmological equations: A holographic-like connection between thermostatistical quantities on a cosmological horizon and in the bulk

Abstract:Horizon thermodynamics is expected to be related to the effective energy based on the energy density calculated from the Friedmann equation for a Friedmann--Robertson--Walker (FRW) universe. In the present study, the effective energy and thermostatistical quantities on a cosmological horizon are examined to clarify the holographic-like connection between them, with a focus on a de Sitter universe. To this end, the Helmholtz free energy on the horizon is derived from horizon thermodynamics. The free energy is found to be equivalent to the effective energy calculated from the Friedmann equation. This consistency is interpreted as a kind of holographic-like connection. To examine this connection, Padmanabhan's holographic equipartition law, which is related to the origin of spacetime dynamics, is applied to a de Sitter universe. It is found that the law should lead to a holographic-like connection. The holographic-like connection is considered to be a bridge between thermostatistical quantities on the horizon and in the bulk. For example, cosmological equations for a flat FRW universe can be derived from horizon thermodynamics by accepting the connection as a viable scenario. In addition, a thermal entropy equivalent to the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy is obtained from the Friedmann equation using the concept of a canonical ensemble in statistical physics. The present study provides new insight into the discussion of horizon thermodynamics and cosmological equations.

Abstract:We calculate the free-fall energy density of scalar fields semi-classically by employing the trace anomaly on a two-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole with respect to various black hole states in order to clarify whether something special at the horizon happens or not. For the Boulware state, the energy density at the horizon is always negative divergent, which is independent of initial free-fall positions. However, in the Unruh state the initial free-fall position is responsible for the energy density at the horizon and there is a critical point to determine the sign of the energy density at the horizon. In particular, a huge negative energy density appears when the freely falling observer is dropped just near the horizon. For the Hartle-Hawking state, it may also be positive or negative depending on the initial free-fall position, but it is always finite. Finally, we discuss physical consequences of these calculations.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain lower bounds for the Brown-York quasilocal mass and the Bartnik quasilocal mass for compact three manifolds with smooth boundaries. As a consequence, we derive sufficient conditions for the existence of horizons for a certain class of compact manifolds with boundary and some asymptotically flat complete manifolds. The method is based on analyzing Hawking mass and inverse mean curvature flow.

In the present analysis these are extended for scalar-tensor theory. The present analysis also suggests that, regarding the equivalence (or inequivalence) of the two frame, the null formalism draws the same inferences as of the timelike case, which in turn establishes the consistency of the newly developed null Brown-York formalism.

Abstract:The standard (Euclidean) action principle for the gravitational field implies that for spacetimes with black hole topology, the opening angle at the horizon and the horizon area are canonical conjugates. It is shown that the opening angle bears the same relation to the horizon area that the time separation bears to the mass at infinity. The dependence of the wave function on this new degree of freedom is governed by an extended Wheeler-DeWitt equation. Summing over all horizon areas yields the black hole entropy.

Abstract:We study the momentum and Hamiltonian constraints of vacuum Einstein equations, within the Bowen-York formalism, for two interacting black holes in close separation, with anti-parallel spins and anti-parallel linear momenta. We give an analytical solution using perturbation theory. We also compute the location and the shape of the apparent horizon which generically depend on all the parameters, angles and the separation between the black holes. Our solution only works for distances far away from the black holes. To gain more insight close to the black holes, one has to go to the higher orders in perturbation theory, which is a rather cumbersome process. But the solution presented here can be of some use for numerical computations as the latter should match our result for the described problem.

Horizon-absorbed energy flux in circularized, nonspinning black-hole binaries and its effective-one-body representation

Abstract:We propose, within the effective one body (EOB) approach, a new, resummed, analytical representation of the gravitational wave energy flux absorbed by a system of two circularized (nonspinning) black holes. This expression is such to be well-behaved in the strong-field, fast motion regime, notably up to the EOB-defined last unstable orbit. Building conceptually upon the procedure adopted to resum the multipolar asymptotic energy flux, we introduce a {\it multiplicative} decomposition of the multipolar absorbed flux made by three factors: (i) the leading-order contribution, (ii) an "effective source" and (iii) a new residual amplitude correction $(\tilde{\rho}_\lm^H)^{2\ell}$. In the test-mass limit, we use a frequency-domain perturbative approach to accurately compute numerically the horizon-absorbed fluxes along a sequence of stable and unstable circular orbits and we extract from them the functions $\tilde{\rho}_\lm^H$. These quantities are then fitted via rational functions. The resulting analytically represented test-mass knowledge is then suitably {\it hybridized} with lower-order analytical information that is valid for any mass ratio. This yields a resummed representation of the absorbed flux for a generic, circularized, nonspinning black-hole binary. Our result adds new information to the state-of-the-art calculation of the absorbed flux at fractional 5 post-Newtonian order [S. Taylor and E. Poisson, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 78} 084016 (2008)], that is recovered in the weak-field limit approximation by construction.
