Abstract:Given a set U of alternatives, a choice (correspondence) on U is a contractive map c defined on a family Omega of nonempty subsets of U. Semantically, a choice c associates to each menu A in Omega a nonempty subset c(A) of A comprising all elements of A that are deemed selectable by an agent. A choice on U is total if its domain is the powerset of U minus the empty set, and partial otherwise. According to the theory of revealed preferences, a choice is rationalizable if it can be retrieved from a binary relation on U by taking all maximal elements of each menu. It is well-known that rationalizable choices are characterized by the satisfaction of suitable axioms of consistency, which codify logical rules of selection within menus. For instance, WARP (Weak Axiom of Revealed Preference) characterizes choices rationalizable by a transitive relation. Here we study the satisfiability problem for unquantified formulae of an elementary fragment of set theory involving a choice function symbol c, the Boolean set operators and the singleton, the equality and inclusion predicates, and the propositional connectives. In particular, we consider the cases in which the interpretation of c satisfies any combination of two specific axioms of consistency, whose conjunction is equivalent to WARP. In two cases we prove that the related satisfiability problem is NP-complete, whereas in the remaining cases we obtain NP-completeness under the additional assumption that the number of choice terms is constant.

Abstract:Supersymmetric particles represent the best motivated candidates to fill the Dark Matter gap, and are actively hunted by a number of competing experiments. Discriminating experiments are testing for the first time SUSY models compatible with accelerator constraints. These experiments contradict the 60 GeV WIMP candidate reported by the DAMA experiment. The sensitivities of direct and indirect detection techniques for both present experiments and future projects are compared.

A Topological Version of Schaefer's Dichotomy Theorem

Abstract:Schaefer's dichotomy theorem [Schaefer, STOC'78] states that a boolean constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) is polynomial-time solvable if one of six given conditions holds for every type of constraint allowed in its instances. Otherwise, it is NP-complete. In this paper, we analyze boolean CSPs in terms of their topological complexity, instead of their computational complexity. We attach a natural topological space to the set of solutions of a boolean CSP and introduce the notion of projection-universality. We prove that a boolean CSP is projection-universal if and only if it is categorized as NP-complete by Schaefer's dichotomy theorem, showing that the dichotomy translates exactly from computational to topological complexity. We show a similar dichotomy for SAT variants and homotopy-universality.

Abstract:The infinite-domain CSP dichotomy conjecture extends the finite-domain CSP dichotomy theorem to reducts of finitely bounded homogeneous structures. Every finitely bounded homogeneous structure is uniquely described by a universal first-order sentence, and every reduct of such a structure by a sentence of the logic SNP. By Fraïssé's Theorem, testing the existence of a finitely bounded homogeneous structure for a given universal first-order sentence is equivalent to testing the amalgamation property for the class of its finite models. The present paper motivates a complexity-theoretic view on the classification problem for finitely bounded homogeneous structures. We show that this meta-problem is EXPSPACE-hard or PSPACE-hard, depending on whether the input is specified by a universal sentence or a set of forbidden substructures. By relaxing the input to SNP sentences and the question to the existence of a structure with a finitely bounded homogeneous expansion, we obtain a different meta-problem, closely related to the question of homogenizability. We show that this second meta-problem is already undecidable, even if the input SNP sentence comes from the Datalog fragment and uses at most binary relation symbols. As a byproduct of our proof, we also get the undecidability of some other properties for Datalog programs, e.g., whether they can be rewritten in the logic MMSNP, whether they solve some finite-domain CSP, or whether they define a structure with a homogeneous Ramsey expansion in a finite relational signature.

The Connectivity of Boolean Satisfiability: Dichotomies for Formulas and Circuits

Abstract:For Boolean satisfiability problems, the structure of the solution space is characterized by the solution graph, where the vertices are the solutions, and two solutions are connected iff they differ in exactly one variable. In 2006, Gopalan et al. studied connectivity properties of the solution graph and related complexity issues for CSPs, motivated mainly by research on satisfiability algorithms and the satisfiability threshold. They proved dichotomies for the diameter of connected components and for the complexity of the st-connectivity question, and conjectured a trichotomy for the connectivity question. Recently, we were able to establish the trichotomy [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1312.4524" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1312.4524">arXiv:1312.4524</a>]. Here, we consider connectivity issues of satisfiability problems defined by Boolean circuits and propositional formulas that use gates, resp. connectives, from a fixed set of Boolean functions. We obtain dichotomies for the diameter and the two connectivity problems: on one side, the diameter is linear in the number of variables, and both problems are in P, while on the other side, the diameter can be exponential, and the problems are PSPACE-complete. For partially quantified formulas, we show an analogous dichotomy.

Abstract:In the nineties Immerman and Medina initiated the search for syn- tactic tools to prove NP-completeness. In their work, amongst several results, they conjecture that the NP-completeness of a problem defined by the conjunction of a sentence in Existential Second Order Logic with a First Order sentence, necessarily imply the NP-completeness of the problem defined by the Existential Second Order sentence alone. This is interesting because if true it would justify the restriction heuristic pro- posed in Garey and Johnson in his classical book on NP completeness, which roughly says that in some cases one can prove NP- complete a problem A by proving NP-complete a problem B contained in A. Borges and Bonet extend some results from Immerman and Medina and they also prove for a host of complexity classes that the Immerman- Medina conjecture is true when the First Order sentence in the conjunc- tion is universal. Our work extends that result to the Second Level of the Polynomial-Time Hierarchy.

On a Certain NP-Complete Problem

Abstract:We intend to create new concepts aimed at finding necessary and sufficient conditions for Boolean satisfiability so that these conditions can be verified in polynomial time. Based on these conditions it will be possible to create an algorithm that determines in polynomial time whether a given Boolean formula represented in conjunctive normal form is satisfiable. The work will consist of three articles. This is the first of a planned series of these articles. In this article we introduce the concept of special decomposition of a set and the concept of special covering for a set under such a decomposition. We formulate the decision problem of existance of a special covering for a set under a special decompostition of this set. In order to determine the complexity class in which this problem is located, we study the relationship between the sat CNF problem and the problem of existence of a special covering for a set under a special decomposition of this set. The article proves that the decidability of the sat CNF problem is polynomially reduced to the problem of the existence of a special covering for a set. It is also proved that the problem of existence of a special covering for a set is polynomially reduced to the decidability of the sat CNF problem. Therefore, the mentioned problems are polynomially equivalent. And then, the problem of existence of a special covering for a set is an NP-complete problem. The conditions for the existence of special coverings for a set under special decompositions of this set will be study in the next articles.

Abstract:Gottfried Leibniz embarked on a research program to prove all the Aristotelic categorical syllogisms by diagrammatic and algebraic methods. He succeeded in proving them by means of Euler diagrams, but didn't produce a manuscript with their algebraic proofs. We demonstrate how key excerpts scattered across various Leibniz's drafts on logic contained sufficient ingredients to prove them by an algebraic method -- which we call the Leibniz-Cayley (LC) system -- without having to make use of the more expressive and complex machinery of first-order quantificational logic. In addition, we prove the classic categorical syllogisms again by a relational method -- which we call the McColl-Ladd (ML) system -- employing categorical relations studied by Hugh McColl and Christine Ladd. Finally, we show the connection of ML and LC with Boolean algebra, proving that ML is a consequence of LC, and that LC is a consequence of the Boolean lattice axioms, thus establishing Leibniz's historical priority over George Boole in characterizing and applying (a sufficient fragment of) Boolean algebra to effectively tackle categorical syllogistic.

Abstract:We study Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) in an infinite context. We show that the dichotomy between easy and hard problems -- established already in the finite case -- presents itself as the strength of the corresponding De Bruijin-Erdős-type compactness theorem over ZF. More precisely, if $\mathcal{D}$ is a structure, let $K_\mathcal{D}$ stand for the following statement: for every structure $\mathcal{X}$ if every finite substructure of $\mathcal{X}$ admits a solution to $\mathcal{D}$, then so does $\mathcal{X}$. We prove that if $\mathcal{D}$ admits no cyclic polymorphism, and thus it is NP-complete by the CSP Dichotomy Theorem, then $K_\mathcal{D}$ is equivalent to the Boolean Prime Ideal Theorem (BPI) over ZF. Conversely, we also show that if $\mathcal{D}$ admits a cyclic polymorphism, and thus it is in P, then $K_\mathcal{D}$ is strictly weaker than BPI.

Choiceless Computation and Symmetry: Limitations of Definability

Abstract:The search for a logic capturing PTIME is a long standing open problem in finite model theory. One of the most promising candidate logics for this is Choiceless Polynomial Time with counting (CPT). Abstractly speaking, CPT is an isomorphism-invariant computation model working with hereditarily finite sets as data structures. While it is easy to check that the evaluation of CPT-sentences is possible in polynomial time, the converse has been open for more than 20 years: Can every PTIME-decidable property of finite structures be expressed in CPT? We attempt to make progress towards a negative answer and show that Choiceless Polynomial Time cannot compute a preorder with colour classes of logarithmic size in every hypercube. The reason is that such preorders have super-polynomially many automorphic images, which makes it impossible for CPT to define them. While the computation of such a preorder is not a decision problem that would immediately separate P and CPT, it is significant for the following reason: The so-called Cai-Fürer-Immerman (CFI) problem is one of the standard benchmarks for logics and maybe best known for separating fixed-point logic with counting (FPC) from P. Hence, it is natural to consider this also a potential candidate for the separation of CPT and P. The strongest known positive result in this regard says that CPT is able to solve CFI if a preorder with logarithmically sized colour classes is present in the input structure. Our result implies that this approach cannot be generalised to unordered inputs. In other words, CFI on unordered hypercubes is a PTIME-problem which provably cannot be tackled with the state-of-the-art choiceless algorithmic techniques.

Abstract:We study techniques for deciding the computational complexity of infinite-domain constraint satisfaction problems. For certain fundamental algebraic structures Delta, we prove definability dichotomy theorems of the following form: for every first-order expansion Gamma of Delta, either Gamma has a quantifier-free Horn definition in Delta, or there is an element d of Gamma such that all non-empty relations in Gamma contain a tuple of the form (d,...,d), or all relations with a first-order definition in Delta have a primitive positive definition in Gamma. The results imply that several families of constraint satisfaction problems exhibit a complexity dichotomy: the problems are in P or NP-hard, depending on the choice of the allowed relations. As concrete examples, we investigate fundamental algebraic constraint satisfaction problems. The first class consists of all first-order expansions of (Q;+). The second class is the affine variant of the first class. In both cases, we obtain full dichotomies by utilising our general methods.

The Logic of Prefixes and Suffixes is Elementary under Homogeneity

Abstract:In this paper, we study the finite satisfiability problem for the logic BE under the homogeneity assumption. BE is the cornerstone of Halpern and Shoham's interval temporal logic, and features modal operators corresponding to the prefix (a.k.a. "Begins") and suffix (a.k.a. "Ends") relations on intervals. In terms of complexity, BE lies in between the "Chop logic C", whose satisfiability problem is known to be non-elementary, and the PSPACE-complete interval logic D of the sub-interval (a.k.a. "During") relation. BE was shown to be EXPSPACE-hard, and the only known satisfiability procedure is primitive recursive, but not elementary. Our contribution consists of tightening the complexity bounds of the satisfiability problem for BE, by proving it to be EXPSPACE-complete. We do so by devising an equi-satisfiable normal form with boundedly many nested modalities. The normalization technique resembles Scott's quantifier elimination, but it turns out to be much more involved due to the limitations enforced by the homogeneity assumption.

Abstract:Descriptive complexity theory aims at inferring a problem's computational complexity from the syntactic complexity of its description. A cornerstone of this theory is Fagin's Theorem, by which a graph property is expressible in existential second-order logic (ESO logic) if, and only if, it is in NP. A natural question, from the theory's point of view, is which syntactic fragments of ESO logic also still characterize NP. Research on this question has culminated in a dichotomy result by Gottlob, Kolatis, and Schwentick: for each possible quantifier prefix of an ESO formula, the resulting prefix class either contains an NP-complete problem or is contained in P. However, the exact complexity of the prefix classes inside P remained elusive. In the present paper, we clear up the picture by showing that for each prefix class of ESO logic, its reduction closure under first-order reductions is either FO, L, NL, or NP. For undirected, self-loop-free graphs two containment results are especially challenging to prove: containment in L for the prefix $\exists R_1 \cdots \exists R_n \forall x \exists y$ and containment in FO for the prefix $\exists M \forall x \exists y$ for monadic $M$. The complex argument by Gottlob, Kolatis, and Schwentick concerning polynomial time needs to be carefully reexamined and either combined with the logspace version of Courcelle's Theorem or directly improved to first-order computations. A different challenge is posed by formulas with the prefix $\exists M \forall x\forall y$: We show that they express special constraint satisfaction problems that lie in L.

Abstract:Stable infiniteness, strong finite witnessability, and smoothness are model-theoretic properties relevant to theory combination in satisfiability modulo theories. Theories that are strongly finitely witnessable and smooth are called strongly polite and can be effectively combined with other theories. Toledo, Zohar, and Barrett conjectured that stably infinite and strongly finitely witnessable theories are smooth and therefore strongly polite. They called counterexamples to this conjecture unicorn theories, as their existence seemed unlikely. We prove that, indeed, unicorns do not exist. We also prove versions of the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem and the Łoś-Vaught test for many-sorted logic.

Abstract:Using the methods of topological dynamics, H. Furstenberg introduced the notion of a central set and proved the famous Central Sets Theorem. D. De, N. Hindman, and D. Strauss introduced $C$-set, satisfying the strong central set theorem. Using the algebraic structure of the Stone-Čech compactification of a discrete semigroup, N. Hindman and D. Strauss proved that the Cartesian product of two $C$-sets is a $C$-set. S. Goswami has proved the same result using the elementary characterization of $C$-sets. In this article, we will prove that the product of two $C$-sets is a $C$-set, using the dynamical characterization of $C$-sets. Recently, S. Goswami has proved that the Cartesian product of two $CR$-sets is a $CR$-set, which was a question posed by N. Hindman, H. Hosseini, D. Strauss, and M. Tootkaboni in [Semigroup Forum 107 (2023)]. Here we also prove that the Cartesian product of two essential $CR$-sets is an essential $CR$-set.
