Abstract:We investigate minimal charts with loops, a simple closed curve consisting of edges of label $m$ containing exactly one white vertex. We shall show that there does not exist any loop in a minimal chart with exactly seven white vertices in this paper.

Abstract:Charts are oriented labeled graphs in a disk. Any simple surface braid (2-dimensional braid) can be described by using a chart. Also, a chart represents an oriented closed surface (called a surface-link) embedded in 4-space. In this paper, we investigate surface-links by using charts. In [11], [12], we gave an enumeration of the charts with two crossings. In particular, there are two classes for 4-charts with 2 crossings and 8 black vertices. The first class represents surface-links each of which is connected. The second class represents surface-links each of which is exactly two connected components. In this paper, by using quandle colorings, we shall show that the charts in the second class represent different surface-links.

Abstract:We show that any minimal Cayley graph of a (finitely generated) generalized dihedral or nilpotent group has chromatic number at most 3, while 4 colors are sometimes necessary for soluble groups. On the other hand we construct graphs of unbounded chromatic number that admit a proper edge coloring such that each cycle has some color at least twice. The latter disproves a conjecture of Babai'78 that would have implied that all minimal Cayley graphs have bounded chromatic number -- a problem that remains open.

Abstract:We describe a method for generating minimal hard prime surface-link diagrams. We extend the known examples of minimal hard prime classical unknot and unlink diagrams up to three components and generate figures of all minimal hard prime surface-unknot and surface-unlink diagrams with prime base surface components up to ten crossings.

Tight minimum degree conditions for apex-outerplanar minors and subdivisions in graphs and digraphs

Abstract:Motivated by Hadwiger's conjecture and related problems for list-coloring, we study graphs $H$ for which every graph with minimum degree at least $|V(H)|-1$ contains $H$ as a minor. We prove that a large class of apex-outerplanar graphs satisfies this property. Our result gives the first examples of such graphs whose vertex cover numbers are significantly larger than half of the number of its vertices, which breaks a barrier for attacking related coloring problems via extremal functions, and recovers all known such graphs that have arbitrarily large maximum degree. Our proof can be adapted to directed graphs to show that if $\vec H$ is the digraph obtained from a directed cycle or an in-arborescence by adding an apex source, then every digraph with minimum out-degree $|V(\vec H)|-1$ contains $\vec H$ as a subdivision or a butterfly minor respectively. These results provide the optimal upper bound for the chromatic number and dichromatic number of graphs and digraphs that do not contain the aforementioned graphs or digraphs as a minor, butterfly minor and a subdivision, respectively. Special cases of our results solve an open problem of Aboulker, Cohen, Havet, Lochet, Moura and Thomassé and strengthen results of Gishboliner, Steiner and Szabó.

Abstract:The van der Geer-van der Vlugt curves are Artin-Schreier coverings of the affine line defined by linearized polynomials over finite fields. We give several criteria for them to be maximal or minimal, i.e. attaining the upper or lower bound in the Hasse-Weil inequalities. We also study the $L$-polynomials of certain generalizations of van der Geer-van der Vlugt curves. As applications, we find several maximal (or minimal) curves among them. Our proof is based on an explicit formula of $L$-polynomials recently obtained by Takeuchi and the third author.

Abstract:We identify all minimal chordal graphs that are not circular-arc graphs, thereby resolving one of ``the main open problems'' concerning the structures of circular-arc graphs as posed by Dur{á}n, Grippo, and Safe in 2011. The problem had been attempted even earlier, and previous efforts have yielded partial results, particularly for claw-free graphs and graphs with an independence number of at most four. The answers turn out to have very simple structures: all the nontrivial ones belong to a single family. Our findings are based on a structural study of McConnell's flipping, which transforms circular-arc graphs into interval graphs with certain representation patterns.

Almost minimal models of log surfaces

Abstract:We generalize Miyanishi's theory of almost minimal models of log smooth surfaces with reduced boundary to the case of arbitrary log surfaces defined over an algebraically closed field. Given an MMP run of a log surface $(X,D)$ we define and construct its almost minimal model, whose underlying surface has singularities not worse than $X$ and which differs from a minimal model by a contraction of some curves supported in the boundary only. For boundaries of type $rD$, where $D$ is reduced and $r\in [0,1]\cap \mathbb{Q}$, we show that if $X$ is smooth or $r\in [0,\frac{1}{2}]$ then the construction respects $(1-r)$-divisorial log terminality and $(1-r)$-log canonicity. We show that the assumptions are optimal, too.

Abstract:We introduce the Loop Weierstrass Representation for minimal surfaces in Euclidean space and constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in hyperbolic space by applying integral system methods to the Weierstrass and Bryant representations. We unify associated families, dual surfaces and Goursat transformations under the same holomorphic data, we introduce a simple factor dressing for minimal surfaces, and we compute and classify various examples.

Abstract:In this paper, a link diagram is said to be minimal if no Reidemeister move I or II can be applied to it to reduce the number of crossings. We show that for an arbitrary diagram D of a link without a trivial split component, a minimal diagram obtained by applying Reidemeister moves I and II to D is unique. The proof also shows that the number of crossings of such a minimal diagram is unique for any diagram of any link. As the unknot admits infinitely many non-trivial minimal diagrams, we see that every link has infinitely many minimal diagrams, by considering the connected sums with such diagrams. We show that for a link without a trivial split component, an arbitrary Reidemeister move III either does not change the associated minimal diagram or can be reduced to a special type of a move up to Reidemeister moves I and II.

Abstract:The graph minor structure theorem by Robertson and Seymour shows that every graph that excludes a fixed minor can be constructed by a combination of four ingredients: graphs embedded in a surface of bounded genus, a bounded number of vortices of bounded width, a bounded number of apex vertices, and the clique-sum operation. This paper studies the converse question: What is the maximum order of a complete graph minor in a graph constructed using these four ingredients? Our main result answers this question up to a constant factor.

Abstract:We study the Dirichlet problem for minimal surface systems in arbitrary dimension and codimension via mean curvature flow, and obtain the existence of minimal graphs over arbitrary mean convex bounded C2 domains for a large class of prescribed boundary data. This result can be seen as a natural generalization of the classical sharp criterion for solvability of the minimal surface equation by Jenkins-Serrin. In contrast, we also construct a class of prescribed boundary data on just mean convex domains for which the Dirichlet problem in codimension 2 is not solvable. Moreover, we study existence and the uniqueness of minimal graphs by perturbation.
