Abstract:Abstract Water scarcity is a pressing issue in California. We develop ambient noise differential adjoint tomography that improves the sensitivity to fluid-bearing rocks by canceling bias caused by noise sources. Here we image the shallow S-wave velocity structure using this method beneath a linear seismic array (LASSIE) in Los Angeles Basin, which shows significant velocity reduction marking a major regional water producer, the Silverado aquifer, along with other fluid-bearing structures. Based on the S-wave tomography and previous P-wave studies, we derive the porosity in Long Beach and discover that the rock from 1-2 km depth surrounding the Newport-Inglewood Fault contains abundant fluids with pore-fluid fraction ~0.33. The high-porosity rock around the fault coincides with previously observed week-long shallow seismicity south of LASSIE array in Long Beach. The imaged S-wave velocity in the top layer shows a similar trend in the geotechnical layer Vs 30, suggesting additional applications to ground motion prediction.

Abstract:Urban geophysical exploration plays an important role in the sustainable development of and the mitigation of geological hazards in metropolitan areas. However, it is not suitable to implement active seismic methods in densely populated urban areas. The rapidly developing ambient-noise tomography (ANT) method is a promising technique for imaging the near-surface seismic velocity structure. We selected the West Lake area of the city of Hangzhou as a case study to probe the shallow subsurface shear-wave velocity (Vs) structure using ANT. We conducted seismic interferometry on the ambient-noise data recorded by 28 seismograph stations during a time period of 17 days. Fundamental-mode Rayleigh-wave group- and phase-velocity dispersion data were measured from cross-correlation functions and then inverted for a 3D Vs model of the uppermost 1 km that covers an area of about 7 km × 8 km. The tomographic results reveal two prominent anomalies, with high velocities in the southwest and low velocities in the northeast. The fast anomaly corresponds to the presence of limestone and sandstone, whereas the slow anomaly is due to the relatively low-velocity rhyolite and volcanic tuff in the area. The boundary between the two anomalies lies to the NE of an NW–SE trending fault, indicating that the fault dips toward the NE. In addition, the pronounced low-velocity anomalies appear under the Baoshi mountain, likely due to the thick rhyolite and volcanic tuff beneath the extinct volcano. Our results correlate well with regional geological features and suggest that ANT could be a promising technique for facilitating the exploration of urban underground space.
Sonar Detection Performance Analysis with Environmental Uncertainty Using Vertical Array Data

Abstract:Sonar detection performance is related to ocean environmental parameters, such as the source position, the ocean depth, the sound speed profile and geoacoustic parameters, etc. These parameters have strong spatial and temporal variability, which result to environmental uncertainty. The sonar detection system can be limited by the presence of environmental uncertainty. Based on a statistical model of the environmental uncertainty, the optimal Bayesian predictor by L. Sha has been applied in this paper to analyze the effects of environmental uncertainty on detection performance using vertical array data collected in two experiments. The first experiment took place in shallow water off the Italian west coast by the NATO SACLANT Center in 1993(SACLANT Sonar Data). The second experiment took place in shallow water in China in 2008(LOFAR'08 data). Quantitative effects of various uncertain parameters on detection performance have been illustrated to evaluate which one is the most sensitive and which one is insignificant. Abstract:Based on the local sound speed measurement model, the acoustic propagation model and the local acoustic pressure measurement model, the approach of ocean acoustic data assimilation suitable to shallow water environments is discussed. In this approach, according to the optimality principle, the a priori knowledge of the local sound speed and acoustic pressure fields is combined with the acoustic propagation model, which effectively improves the precision in the parameter estimation. To validate the approach, the sound speed field in shallow water expressed by empirical orthogonal functions and the geo-acoustic parameters are estimated via a numerical implementation of this approach using the experimental sound velocity measurement data and the effects of different model errors on the precision in the parameter estimation are analyzed. The approach discussed in the paper gives a novel idea for acoustic tomography in shallow water.

Abstract:Abstract The identification of preexisting near-surface faults represents a piece of crucial information needed to correctly assess the seismic hazard of any area. The mapping of these structures is particularly challenging in densely populated and heavily urbanized areas. We use ambient seismic noise recorded by a dense array in Seal Beach, California, to image shallow fault lines via a reflected surface-wave analysis. Our results highlight the presence of previously unknown shallow faults that correlate remarkably well with shallow seismicity and active survey images.

Abstract:Traditional estimation of seismic waves velocities in Earth's interior is based on observation of waves imposed by natural earthquakes or human made explosions. The observation of seismic waves is limited in some places, where the probability of occurrence of natural earthquakes is small, the activity of plates is extremely stable or the seismic waves attenuation is too serious. In recent years a new method to measure the group velocities of Rayleigh waves using cross-correlation analysis of ambient noise has been presented, which largely break of the limitation of above, it does not depend on the natural occurrence of the earthquake, and can provide more information of short periods and shallow structure of the earth, and is successfully used in various areas in the world. Velocities tomography of ambient noise has shown strong vitality not only in the applications of large scale, but also in small scale. In this paper, empirical Green's functions(EGF) of Rayleigh surface waves is extracted through the calculation of ambient noise cross-correlation,which used three-components ambient noise experimental data of 12 receivers, that is acquired in October 15, 2009. The group velocities curve of Rayleigh surface wave is gotten and the method of extracting group velocities of near-surface using ambient noise is discussed in small scale within 100 meters.

Abstract:Ambient noise correlation has been used extensively to retrieve traveltimes of surface waves. However, studies of retrieving amplitude information and attenuation from ambient noise are limited. In this study, we develop methods and strategies to extract Rayleigh wave amplitude and attenuation from ambient noise correlation, based on theoretical derivation, numerical simulation, and practical considerations of real seismic data. The synthetic data included a numerical simulation of a highly anisotropic noise source and Earth-like temporally varying strength. Results from synthetic data validate that amplitudes and attenuations can indeed be extracted from noise correlations for a linear array. A temporal flattening procedure is effective in speeding up convergence while preserving relative amplitudes. The traditional one-bit normalization and other types of temporal normalization that are applied to each individual station separately are problematic in recovering attenuation and should be avoided. In this study, we propose an ‘asynchronous’ temporal flattening procedure for real data that does not require all stations to have data at the same time. Furthermore, we present the detailed procedure for amplitude retrieval from ambient noise. Tests on real data suggest attenuations extracted from our noise-based methods are comparable with those from earthquakes. Our study shows an exciting promise of retrieving amplitude and attenuation information from ambient noise correlations and suggests practical considerations for applications to real data.

Abstract:Summary Although ambient noise interferometry has been extensively utilized for seismic velocity tomography, its application in retrieving attenuation remains limited. This study presents a comprehensive workflow for extracting Rayleigh wave amplitude and attenuation from ambient noise, which consists of three phases: (1) retrieval of empirical Green's Functions (EGFs), (2) selection and correction of amplitude measurements, and (3) inversion of attenuation, site amplification, and noise intensity terms. Throughout these processes, an ‘asynchronous’ temporal flattening method is employed to generate high-quality EGFs while preserving relative amplitudes between stations. Additionally, a novel “t-symmetry” criterion is proposed for data selection along with the signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore, 2-D sensitivity kernels are utilized to estimate the focusing/defocusing effect, which is then corrected in amplitude measurements. These procedures are designed to deliver reliable attenuation measurements while maintaining flexibility and automation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed noise-based attenuation tomography approach, we apply it to a linear array, NCISP-6, located in NE China. The obtained results correlate reasonably well with known geological structures. Specifically, at short periods, high attenuation anomalies delineate the location of major sedimentary basins and faults; while at longer periods, a notable rapid increase of attenuation is observed beneath the Moho discontinuity. Given that attenuation measurements are more sensitive to porosity, defect concentration, temperature, melt, and volatile ratio than seismic velocities, noise-based attenuation tomography provides important additional constraints for exploring the crustal and upper mantle structures.

Imaging the Northern Los Angeles Basins with Autocorrelations

Abstract:We show reflectivity cross-sections for the San Gabriel, Chino, and San Bernardino basins north of Los Angeles, California determined from autocorrelations of ambient noise and teleseismic earthquake waves. These basins are thought to channel the seismic energy from earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault to Los Angeles and a more accurate model of their depth is important for hazard mitigation. We use the causal side of the autocorrelation function to determine the zero-offset reflection response. To minimize the smoothing effect of the source time function, we remove the common mode from the autocorrelation in order to reveal the zero-offset reflection response. We apply this to 10 temporary nodal lines consisting of a total of 758 geophones with an intraline spacing of 250-300 m. We also show that the autocorrelation function from teleseismic events can provide illumination of subsurface that is consistent with ambient noise. Both autocorrelation results compare favorably to receiver functions.

Abstract:Earthquake monitoring in urban settings is essential but challenging, due to the strong anthropogenic noise inherent to urban seismic recordings. Here, we develop a deep-learning-based denoising algorithm, UrbanDenoiser, to filter out urban seismological noise. UrbanDenoiser strongly suppresses noise relative to the signals, because it was trained using waveform datasets containing rich noise sources from the urban Long Beach dense array and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) earthquake signals from the rural San Jacinto dense array. Application to the dense array data and an earthquake sequence in an urban area shows that UrbanDenoiser can increase signal quality and recover signals at an SNR level down to ~0 dB. Earthquake location using our denoised Long Beach data does not support the presence of mantle seismicity beneath Los Angeles but suggests a fault model featuring shallow creep, intermediate locking, and localized stress concentration at the base of the seismogenic zone.

Abstract:Abstract Ambient noise tomography has become a popular method in the past two decades to image the crust and uppermost mantle structure. To date, broadband Rayleigh wave signals can be obtained from ambient noise, which can be utilized to study the earth's interior structure from the surface down to ∼200–300 km depths. However, it is hard to extract intermediate‐ and long‐period (>50 s) Love wave signals from ambient noise using conventional data processing techniques for ambient noise. Array‐based data processing techniques can enhance weak signals. In this study, we adopt a modified algorithm of the double‐beamforming method to extract broadband Love wave signals from ambient noise. We validate the accuracy of the dispersion curves measured from our method by comparing them to those measured from the conventional method. Then, we use a finite frequency ambient noise tomography method to construct broadband Love wave phase velocity maps across the contiguous USA. These phase velocity maps are consistent with those obtained from conventional methods at short periods (<40 s). Finally, we analyze the resolution of our double‐beamforming method based on checkerboard tests and find that the resolution of phase velocity maps based on our method is close to the aperture of the subarrays used in our double‐beamforming method.

Abstract:We collected continuous waveform data from June to December 2007 recorded by 49 broadband seismic stations in western Sichuan and eastern Tibet, and applied an ambient noise technique to obtain a high-resolution tomography model of the crust beneath the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau. Cross-correlations of ambient noise data are calculated in one-hour segments and stacked over 7months. Then Love wave group dispersion curves along approximately 700-station pairs were determined using the multiple-filter analysis method. The study region was divided into a grid of 0.2°×0.2°, and group velocity distribution maps between 8 and 40s were obtained. The Love wave group velocity maps show good correlations with surface features. From the group velocity maps we inverted a 3-D model for SH wave velocity. The inferred SH velocity heterogeneities generally agree with variations in SV derived from Rayleigh wave dispersion, discrepancies between them are examined in view of non-uniqueness of the models and radial anisotropy. Both the Rayleigh and Love wave inversions show the significant difference of the crustal structure and reveal a prominent low-velocity zone within the mid-to-lower crust beneath the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau.
Exploiting the Potential of Urban DAS Grids: Ambient-Noise Subsurface Imaging Using Joint Rayleigh and Love Waves

Abstract:Abstract Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data become important for seismic monitoring of subsurface structures in urban areas. Different from the previous studies that only focused on Rayleigh waves, we report successful observation and analysis of both Rayleigh and Love waves extracted from ambient-noise interferometry, using orthogonal segments of fiber-optic cables in San Jose, California. Theoretical angular responses of DAS ambient-noise cross correlation, together with numerical experiments, help identify DAS channel pairs expected to record stronger Love waves than Rayleigh waves. Based on these waveforms, we further obtain clear Rayleigh- and Love-wave dispersion maps, including both phase and group velocities, with various channel pair orientations. Finally, we perform a joint inversion of Rayleigh- and Love-wave dispersion curves to obtain depth-dependent subsurface velocity structures of the top 100 m. Our inversion result is consistent with the model from the previous study based on Rayleigh-wave dispersion and horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio. In addition, the joint inversion of Love and Rayleigh is more robust than that of the independent inversion of either type of wave. Our new study demonstrates the potential of surface-wave analysis on fiber-optic cables with complex geometry, which can further advance the seismic monitoring of urban areas.

High-Resolution Ambient Noise Imaging of Geothermal Reservoir Using 3C Dense Seismic Nodal Array and Ultra-Short Observation

Abstract:Tomographic imaging based on long-term ambient seismic noise measurements, mainly the phase information from surface waves, has been shown to be a powerful tool for geothermal reservoir imaging and monitoring. In this study, we utilize seismic noise data from a dense nodal array (192 3C nodes within 20 km2) over a ultra-short observation period (4.7 days) to reconstruct surface waves and determine the high-resolution (0.2 km) three-dimensional (3-D) S wave velocity structure beneath a rural town in Zhejiang, China. We report the advantage of cross-coherence over cross-correlation in suppressing pseudo-arrivals caused by persistent sources. We use ambient noise interferometry to retrieve high quality Rayleigh waves and Love waves. Body waves are also observed on the R-R component interferograms. We apply phase velocity dispersion measurements on both Rayleigh waves and Love waves and automatically pick more than 23,000 dispersion curves by using a Machine Learning technique. 3-D surface wave tomographic results after depth inversion indicate low-velocity anomalies (between -1% and -4%) from the surface to 2 km depth in the central area. Combined with the conductive characteristics observed on resistivity profile, the low-velocity anomalies are inferred to be a fluid saturated zone of highly fractured rock. Joint interpretation based on horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) measurements, and existing temperature and fluid resistivity records observed in a nearby well, suggests the existence of the high-temperature geothermal field through the fracture channel. Strong correlation between HVSR measurements and the S wave velocity model highlights the potential of extraction of both amplitude and phase information from ambient noise.
Ambient Noise Love Wave Tomography of China

Abstract:We first report on the Love wave tomography of China based on ambient noise cross-correlations. We used 3 years of continuous waveform data recorded by 206 broadband seismic stations on the Chinese Mainland and 36 neighboring global stations and obtained Love wave empirical Green's functions from cross-correlations of the horizontal components. The Love wave group velocity dispersion measurements were used to construct dispersion maps of 8- to 40-s periods, which were then inverted to obtain a three-dimensional horizontally polarized S-wave (SH) velocity structure. The resolution was approximately 4 degrees x 4 degrees and 8 degrees x 8 degrees for eastern and western China, respectively, and extended to a depth of approximately 50 km. The SH model was generally consistent with a previously published vertically polarized S-wave (SV) model and showed large-scale features that were consistent with geological units, such as the major basins and changes in the crustal thickness across the north-south gravity lineament. The SH and SV models also showed substantial differences, which were used to examine the subsurface radial anisotropy. We define the radial anisotropy parameter as. psi = 2 (V-SH - V-SV) / (V-SH + V-SH). At a shallow depth, we observed significant radial anisotropy under major basins, which may be related to thick sedimentary layers. At the mid to lower crust, most of the Chinese continent showed strong positive radial anisotropy (SH > SV). Central and southern Tibet showed strong positive anisotropy, whereas the radial anisotropy was relatively weak at the northern and eastern margins, which suggests a change in deformation style from the plateau interior to its margins. The North China craton showed prominent positive radial anisotropy, which may be related to decratonization and strong extension since the Mesozoic Era. Love waves are less well retrieved than Rayleigh waves from ambient noise cross-correlations. Increasing the duration of the cross-correlation data beyond 4 to 8 years may not aid in retrieving Love waves of longer periods, for which improved methods need to be explored. Methods of ambient noise-based seismology and their applications

Abstract:Ambient noise-based seismology is fast expanding and has been widely applied to global and regional Earth's interior imaging, near-surface investigation, and oil and gas exploration and production. The review article briefly introduced the origins of ambient noises and traced the root and development history of ambient noise-based seismology. Based on numerous work of modeling and observation, we reviewed the effects of source distribution and station separation on Green's function retrieved for full fields and single mode surface-wave. The theoretical connection and difference between two-station correlation and spatial auto-correlation are also discussed. We then described the methods of ambient noise-based imaging, including ambient noise-based tomography, ambient noise-based eikonal tomography, and seismic interferometry or virtual source method. Finally we summarized its various but emphasizing on near-surface applications and gave an outlook for its future development.

Abstract:Two-dimensional dense seismic ambient noise array techniques have been widely used to image and monitor subsurface structure characterization in complex urban environments. It does not have limitations in the layout under the limitation of urban space, which is more suitable for 3D S -velocity imaging. In traditional ambient seismic noise tomography, the narrowband filtering (NBF) method has many possible dispersion branches. Aliases would appear in the dispersive image, and the dispersion curve inversion also depends on the initial model. To obtain high-accuracy 3D S -velocity imaging in urban seismology, we developed a robust workflow of data processing and S -velocity tomography for 2D dense ambient noise arrays. Firstly, differing from the NBF method, we adopt the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) as an alternative method to measure the phase velocity from the interstation noise cross-correlation function (NCF) without 2 π ambiguity. Then, we proposed the sequential dispersion curve inversion (DCI) strategy, which combines the Dix linear inversion and preconditioned fast descent (PFD) method to invert the S -velocity structure without prior information. Finally, the 3D S -velocity model is generated by the 3D spatial interpolation. The proposed workflow is applied to the 2D dense ambient seismic array dataset in Changchun City. The quality evaluation methods include residual iteration error, horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) map, and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). All tests indicate that the developed workflow provides a reliable 3D S -velocity model, which offers a reference for urban subsurface space exploration.

Abstract:We analyze seismic ambient noise data recorded at a set of permanent and temporary stations across southeastern Tibet to image crustal structure. High-resolution phase velocity maps are presented based on Transdimensional Bayesian seismic ambient noise tomography. Seismic images exhibit more apparent horizontal heterogeneities and show more detailed information compared to previous studies based on traditional ambient noise tomography. As noted from the phase velocity image at 25 s, the rigid high velocity anomalies beneath the Sichuan Basin and the South China Fold System act as a blockage to crustal material expansion, and the distribution of velocity anomalies contributes to the interpretation of a surface clockwise rotation pattern. Our results imply a more complex distributed low-velocity zone rather than two isolated channels beneath SE Tibet. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
