Abstract:We have constructed a Carmichael number with 10,333,229,505 prime factors, and have also constructed Carmichael numbers with kk prime factors for every kk between 3 and 19,565,220. These computations are the product of implementations of two new algorithms for the subset product problem that exploit the non-uniform distribution of primes pp with the property that p−1p-1 divides a highly composite Λ\Lambda.

Abstract:Alford, Granville, and Pomerance proved that there are infinitely many Carmichael numbers. In the same paper, they ask if a statement analogous to Bertrand's postulate could be proven for Carmichael numbers. In this paper, we answer this question, proving the stronger statement that for all $\delta>0$ and $x$ sufficiently large in terms of $\delta$, there exist at least $e^{\frac{\log x}{(\log\log x)^{2+\delta}}}$ Carmichael numbers between $x$ and $x+\frac{x}{(\log x)^{\frac{1}{2+\delta}}}$.

Advances in Tabulating Carmichael Numbers

Abstract:We report that there are $49679870$ Carmichael numbers less than $10^{22}$ which is an order of magnitude improvement on Richard Pinch's prior work. We find Carmichael numbers of the form $n = Pqr$ using an algorithm bifurcated by the size of $P$ with respect to the tabulation bound $B$. For $P < 7 \cdot 10^7$, we found $35985331$ Carmichael numbers and $1202914$ of them were less than $10^{22}$. When $P > 7 \cdot 10^7$, we found $48476956$ Carmichael numbers less than $10^{22}$. We provide a comprehensive overview of both cases of the algorithm. For the large case, we show and implement asymptotically faster ways to tabulate compared to the prior tabulation. We also provide an asymptotic estimate of the cost of this algorithm. It is interesting that Carmichael numbers are worst case inputs to this algorithm. So, providing a more robust asymptotic analysis of the cost of the algorithm would likely require resolution of long-standing open questions regarding the asymptotic density of Carmichael numbers.

Abstract:Fix coprime natural numbers $a,q$. Assuming the Prime $k$-tuple Conjecture, we show that there exist arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions of Carmichael numbers, each of which lies in the reduced residue class $a$ mod $q$ and is a product of three distinct prime numbers.

Abstract:For a Carmichael number $n$ with prime factors $p_1,\cdots,p_m$, define $$K=GCD[p_1-1,\cdots,p_m-1],$$ and let $C_\nu(X)$ denote the number of Carmichael numbers up to $X$ such that $K=\nu$. Assuming a strong conjecture on the first prime in an arithmetic progression, we prove that for any even natural number $\nu$, $$C_\nu(X)\geq X^{1-(2+o(1))\frac{\log\log\log \log X}{\log\log\log X}}.$$ This is a departure from standard constructions of Carmichael numbers, which generally require $K$ to grow along with $n$.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:We establish quantitative lower bounds for the number of primes $p$ such that, for an odd integer $b$, $p - b \leq N$ and $p - b = 2^{k(N) + m} P_k \quad \text{for some } m \geq 0$, where $P_k$ is a product of at most $k$ primes other than 2, for $k \geq 2$. These results hold under various upper bounds for $2^{k(N)}$ depending on $k $, specifically when $2^{k(N)} \leq N^a$ for different values of $a$. Our approach combines techniques from Chen's theorem, weighted sieves, and Selberg's lower bound sieve, as well as results on primes in arithmetic progressions with large power factor moduli.

Abstract:In this article we show that the Czech mathematician Vaclav Simerka discovered the factorization of (10^17-1)/9 using a method based on the class group of binary quadratic forms more than 120 years before Shanks and Schnorr developed similar algorithms. Simerka also gave the first examples of what later became known as Carmichael numbers.

Abstract:We prove a power saving upper bound for the sum of Fourier coefficients $\rho_f(\cdot)$ of a fixed cubic metaplectic cusp form $f$ over primes. Our result is the cubic analogue of a celebrated 1990 Theorem of Duke and Iwaniec, and the cuspidal analogue of a Theorem due to the author and Radziwill for the bias in cubic Gauss sums.

Abstract:In 2023, the first author and Vandehey proved that the largest $k$ for which the string of equalities $\lambda(n+1)=\lambda(n+2)=\cdots=\lambda(n+k)$ holds for some $n\leq x$, where $\lambda$ is the Carmichael $\lambda$ function, is bounded above by $O\left((\log x\log\log x)^2\right)$. Their method involved bounding the value of $\lambda(n + i)$ from below using the prime factorization of $n + i$ for each $i \leq k$. They then used the fact that every $\lambda(n + i)$ had to satisfy this bound. Here we improve their result by incorporating a reverse counting argument on a result of Baker and Harman on the largest prime factor of a shifted prime.

In this note, we prove an analogue of the above Ramanujan's identity in the functions fields setting, which involves the Bernoulli-Carlitz numbers.

We derive new results for the lower bound sieve suited especially for this setup and we apply them in particular to give a new sieve-propelled proof of Linnik's theorem on the least prime in an arithmetic progression in the case of the presence of exceptional zeros.

Abstract:We prove Bombieri-Vinogradov type theorems for primes with a missing digit in their $b$-adic expansion for some large positive integer $b$. The proof is based on the circle method, which relies on the Fourier structure of the integers with a missing digit and the exponential sums over primes in arithmetic progressions. Combining our results with the semi-linear sieve, we obtain an upper bound and a lower bound of the correct order of magnitude for the number of primes of the form $p=1+m^2+n^2$ with a missing digit in a large odd base $b$.
