Abstract:Video highlights are welcomed by audiences, and are composed of interesting or meaningful shots, such as funny shots. However, video shots of highlights are currently edited manually by video editors, which is inconvenient and consumes an enormous amount of time. A way to help video editors locate video highlights more efficiently is essential. Since interesting or meaningful highlights in videos usually imply strong sentiments, a sentiment analysis model is proposed to automatically recognize sentiments of video highlights by time-sync comments. As the comments are synchronized with video playback time, the model detects sentiment information in time series of user comments. Moreover, in the model, a sentimental intensity calculation method is designed to compute sentiments of shots quantitatively. The experiments show that our approach improves the F1 score by 12.8% and overlapped number by 8.0% compared with the best existing method in extracting sentiments of highlights and obtaining sentimental intensities, which provides assistance for video editors in editing video highlights efficiently.

Abstract:Sentiment analysis is one of the fields of affective computing, which detects and evaluates people's psychological states and sentiments through text analysis. It is an important application of text mining technology and is widely used to analyze comments. Bullet screen videos have become a popular way for people to interact and communicate while watching online videos. Existing studies have focused on the form, content, and function of bullet screen comments, but few have examined bullet screen comments using natural language processing. Bullet screen comments are short text messages of different lengths and ambiguous emotional information, which makes it extremely challenging in natural language processing. Hence, it is important to understand how we can use the characteristics of bullet screen comments and sentiment analysis to understand the sentiments expressed and trends in bullet screen comments. This study poses the following research question: how can one analyze the sentiments ex-pressed in bullet screen comments accurately and effectively? This study mainly proposes an ERNIE-BiLSTM approach for sentiment analysis on bullet screen comments, which provides effective and innovative thinking for the sentiment analysis of bullet screen comments. The experimental results show that the ERNIE-BiLSTM approach has a higher accuracy rate, precision rate, recall rate, and F1-score than other methods.

Abstract:The bullet subtitle reflects a kind of instant feedback from the user to the current video. It is generally short but contains rich sentiment. However, the bullet subtitle has its own unique characteristics, and the effect of applying existing sentiment classification methods to the bullet subtitle sentiment classification problem is not ideal. First, since bullet subtitles usually contain a large number of buzzwords, existing sentiment lexicons are not applicable, we propose Chinese Bullet Subtitle Sentiment Lexicon on the basis of existing sentiment lexicons. Second, considering that some traditional affective computing methods only consider the text information and ignore the information of other dimensions, we construct a bullet subtitle affective computing method by combining the information of other dimensions of the bullet subtitle. Finally, aiming at the problem that existing classification algorithms ignore the importance of sentiment words in short texts, we propose a sentiment classification method based on affective computing and ensemble learning. Our experiment results show that the proposed method has higher accuracy and better practical application effect.

Exploring Controversy Via Sentiment Divergences of Aspects in Reviews.

Abstract:A visual summary of the controversial aspects of an item enables both customers and marketers to identify and address complaints and concerns about the item effectively. In this paper, we propose a novel visual analytics system, to visually explore when a controversy occurs and the causes behind the controversy via user-generated reviews with text and ratings in various domains, such as restaurants, home goods, and cultural products. Quantitative analysis of the ratings of an item is first applied to characterize the evolution of controversy over time. A novel aspect-extraction method based on hierarchical clustering is proposed to identify aspect-level reasons garnered from review texts that explain why a controversy occurs. Our system allows the user to interactively explore the time-evolving controversy trend, major aspects of reviews, and sentiment divergences of aspects to understand in depth the controversy in reviews. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed aspect-extraction method by means of accuracy of aspect identification, the usefulness of our system using three case studies in different domains, and a user study.

Abstract:Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) is used in different fields for analyzing customer reviews to project an overall customer opinion on certain products. With the expansion of the internet, people are provided with an inexpensive and time-saving method to express their opinion to a larger audience, while various industries are handed with the opportunity to gather free information from it to obtain market value. The implementation of machine learning methods for the evaluation of aspects related to movies and television series has not been commenced, and it could be a new development for the industry. This study focuses on conducting an ABSA on a movie or a television series based on genre, story as well as cast and crew aspects. The data collected from social media through web scraping is processed to produce adequate results to get a broad understanding on how the popularity of the movie or the television series related to above mentioned aspects. Then, each aspect is further analyzed to gather precise information belonging to each aspect. The accuracy of the results of the proposed system has been achieved over 79%. The results proved that the solution is highly successful than the former works with high business value.

Abstract:Automatic movie summarization helps users to skim a movie in an efficient way. However, it is challenging because it requires the computer to automatically understand the movie content and the users’ opinions. Most previous works rely on the movie data itself without considering the opinions of the audience. In this paper, a novel approach for automatic movie summarization is presented by exploring a new type of user-generated data, i.e. bullet screen comments, which allow the audience to comment on the movie in a real-time manner. The number of the comments on a movie segment shows the exciting degree of the audience, while the content of the comments includes the concepts (e.g. the characters and the scenes) that interest the audience. In our approach, given a movie, bullet screen comments are utilized to select candidate highlight segments which are the most commented. Then the candidates are scored based on the number and the content of the bullet screen comments. Visual diversity is also considered in the scoring process. Finally, a subset of candidates which achieves the highest score is selected to compose a summary. Our experiments carried out on movies of different genres have shown the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Abstract:Bullet screen, a form of online video commentary in emerging social media, is widely used on video websites frequented by young people. It has become a novel means of expressing emotions towards videos. The characteristics, such as varying text lengths and the presence of numerous new words, lead to ambiguous emotional information. To address these characteristics, this paper proposes a Robustly Optimized BERT Pretraining Approach (RoBERTa) + Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) sentiment classification algorithm integrated with a sentiment lexicon. RoBERTa encodes the input text to enhance semantic feature representation, and CNN extracts local features using multiple convolutional kernels of different sizes. Sentiment classification is then performed by a softmax classifier. Meanwhile, we use the sentiment lexicon to calculate the emotion score of the input text and normalize the emotion score. Finally, the classification results of the sentiment lexicon and RoBERTa+CNN are weighted and calculated. The bullet screens are grouped according to their length, and different weights are assigned to the sentiment lexicon based on their length to enhance the features of the model's sentiment classification. The method combines the sentiment lexicon can be customized for the domain vocabulary and the pre-trained model can deal with the polysemy. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves improvements in precision, recall, and F1 score. The experiments in this paper take the Russia–Ukraine war as the research topic, and the experimental methods can be extended to other events. The experiment demonstrates the effectiveness of the model in the sentiment analysis of bullet screen texts and has a positive effect on grasping the current public opinion status of hot events and guiding the direction of public opinion in a timely manner.

Abstract:Aspect-based sentiment summarization systems generally use sentences associated with relevant aspects extracted from the reviews as the basis for summarization. However, in real reviews, a single sentence often exhibits several aspects for opinions. This paper proposes a two-stage segmentation model to address the challenge of identifying multiple single-aspect and single-polarity units in one sentence, namely aspect-based sentence segmentation. Our model deals with both issues of aspect change and polarity change occurring in the input sentence. Experiments on restaurant reviews show that our model outperforms state-of-the-art linear text segmentation methods.

Abstract:At present, the method of extracting highlights snippets of video is restricted to image and audio analysis in sports videos. About this problem, this paper proposes a new method of using bullet curtain text as sentiment carrier for sentiment analysis, and then using its time coupling to identify the highlight snippets. Firstly, according to the particularity of bullet curtain text, a domain sentiment dictionary is constructed. Secondly, the paper proposes a new feature integrating time series of bullet curtain, and classifies bullet curtain text by support vector machine. Finally, bullet curtain with intense sentiment is superimposed on the video time scale, and the full video brilliance curve is obtained. The best threshold is selected to identify highlight snippets. Experimental results show that the proposed method has higher accuracy, precision and recall rate, and the validity of the proposed method is verified.

Abstract:With the special \"@, #, //\" symbols, which include a lot of emotional symbols and pictures etc., tweets are different with other user-generated general texts, such as blogs, forums, reviews. Considering structural features and content of tweets, we present a semi-supervised Aspect and Sentiment Unification ModelPL-SASU. Using more information rather than solo texts, this model can model tweets better. The experiments of sentiment classification and aspect identification on real twitter data show that PL-SASU outperforms JTS, ASUM and UTSU model.

Abstract:Aspect term sentiment classification (ATSC) aims at identifying sentiment polarities towards some aspect terms described in a text. One of the challenges in the ATSC is that the same word may express different sentiment polarities for distinct aspects. For instance, if the word “high” is used to describe the quality of a product, this word is most likely used to express a positive opinion towards the product. However, if the aspect term is about the price of the product, the same word “high” is quite likely used to represent a negative sentiment polarity. Such aspect-sensitive word features are also useful for the ATSC when the comparative forms are used to express opinions. What sentiment or opinion is expressed largely depends on who we compare with and how we compare. We describe a weakly supervised method to create an aspect-sensitive lexicon for each aspect, which is a relatively accurate representation of the sentiments that are related to that aspect. We also propose a sentiment analysis model enhanced with the learned aspect-sensitive word embeddings, and extensive experiments show that this model achieved state-of-the-art performances on multiple datasets.

Abstract:Existing research efforts in sentiment analysis of online user reviews mainly focus on extracting features (such as quality and price) of products/services and classifying users' sentiments into semantic orientations (such as positive, negative or neutral). However, few of them take the strength of user sentiments into consideration, which is particularly important in measuring the overall quality of products/services. Intuitively, different reviews for the same feature should have quite different sentiment strength, even though they may express the same polarity of sentiment. This paper presents an approach to estimating the sentiment strength of user reviews according to the strength of adverbs and adjectives expressed by users in their opinion phrases. Experimental result on a hotel review dataset in Chinese shows that the proposed approach is effective in the task of sentiment classification and achieves a good performance on a multi-scale evaluation.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the Internet and information technology,the online comments of users are also increasing. Using computer technology to analyze emotional tendencies of large-scale network texts in the government's public opinion analysis and evalu-ation of the company's product applications such as intelligent feedback has enormous development prospects. Mainly study the influence of selecting different text features on the final classification accuracy of sentiment classification in this paper. Different text features studied in the experiment include emotional words,adjectives,adverbs,modal and punctuation. The experimental results show that selecting emo-tional words,adjectives,adverbs as feature items on sentiment classification can achieve good classification performance,and adding mo-dal and punctuation features can effectively improve the sentiment classification accuracy. The research findings can be applied to social public opinion analysis,filtering spam blog,commodity reviews and recommendations,film evaluation and so on.

Abstract:With the rapid development of Internet social platforms, buyer shows (such as comment text) have become an important basis for consumers to understand products and purchase decisions. The early sentiment analysis methods were mainly text-level and sentence-level, which believed that a text had only one sentiment. This phenomenon will cover up the details, and it is difficult to reflect people’s fine-grained and comprehensive sentiments fully, leading to people’s wrong decisions. Obviously, aspect-level sentiment analysis can obtain a more comprehensive sentiment classification by mining the sentiment tendencies of different aspects in the comment text. However, the existing aspect-level sentiment analysis methods mainly focus on attention mechanism and recurrent neural network. They lack emotional sensitivity to the position of aspect words and tend to ignore long-term dependencies. In order to solve this problem, on the basis of Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), this paper proposes an effective aspect-level sentiment analysis approach (ALM-BERT) by constructing an aspect feature location model. Specifically, we use the pretrained BERT model first to mine more aspect-level auxiliary information from the comment context. Secondly, for the sake of learning the expression features of aspect words and the interactive information of aspect words’ context, we construct an aspect-based sentiment feature extraction method. Finally, we construct evaluation experiments on three benchmark datasets. The experimental results show that the aspect-level sentiment analysis performance of the ALM-BERT approach proposed in this paper is significantly better than other comparison methods.

Abstract:Sentiment classification aims at mining reviews of customers for a certain product by automatic classifying the reviews into positive or negative opinions. With the fast developing of World Wide Web applications, sentiment classification would have huge opportunity to help people automatic analysis of customers’ opinions from the web information. Automatic opinion mining will benefit to both consumers and sellers. Up to now, it is still a complicated task with great challenge. There are mainly two types of approaches for sentiment classification, machine learning methods and semantic orientation methods. Though some pioneer researches explored the approaches for English movie review classification, few jobs have been done on sentiment classification for Chinese reviews. The improved semantic approach for sentiment classification on movie reviews written in Chinese was proposed in this paper. Data experiment shows the capability of this approach.
Embarrassingly Simple Unsupervised Aspect Based Sentiment Tuple Extraction

Abstract:Aspect Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) tasks involve the extraction of fine-grained sentiment tuples from sentences, aiming to discern the author's opinions. Conventional methodologies predominantly rely on supervised approaches; however, the efficacy of such methods diminishes in low-resource domains lacking labeled datasets since they often lack the ability to generalize across domains. To address this challenge, we propose a simple and novel unsupervised approach to extract opinion terms and the corresponding sentiment polarity for aspect terms in a sentence. Our experimental evaluations, conducted on four benchmark datasets, demonstrate compelling performance to extract the aspect oriented opinion words as well as assigning sentiment polarity. Additionally, unsupervised approaches for opinion word mining have not been explored and our work establishes a benchmark for the same.

Abstract:With the developing technology, social media, forum sites and blocks have been widely used. People are now using these channels very widely and they share their feelings and thoughts in these environments. Therefore, natural language processing applications have started to become a more popular topic with each passing day. One of the most popular topics in natural language processing is sentiment analysis. In sentiment analysis, subjective information is extracted by making examinations according to certain criteria. In this study, the IMDB data set was used to perform sentiment analysis. The IMDB dataset is one of the largest datasets on this subject, consisting of movie reviews. This dataset contains users' comments about movies. In the study, firstly, the data preprocessing step was carried out. Then, the prepared data set was classified in classical machine learning classifiers and the proposed ESA-based model. The proposed ESA-based model was more successful than the classical machine learning classifiers in analyzing the texts in the IMDB dataset, and the proposed deep model achieved an accuracy of 85.57%.
