Abstract:We show, both theoretically and experimentally, that high-numerical-aperture (NA) optical microscopy is accompanied by strong spin-orbit interaction of light, which translates fine infomation about the specimen to the polarization degrees of freedom of light. An 80nm gold nano-particle scattering the light in the focus of a high-NA objective generates angular momentum conversion which is seen as a non-uniform polarization distribution at the exit pupil. We demonstrate remarkable sensitivity of the effect to the position of the nano-particle: Its subwavelength displacement produces the giant spin-Hall effect, i.e., macro-separation of spins in the outgoing light. This brings forth a far-field optical nanoprobing technique based on the spin-orbit interaction of light.

Abstract:The interaction between light's spin and orbital angular momentum under nonparaxial conditions not only facilitates many fundamental sciences but also underpins a variety of applications. Such a strong coupling between the two separable dimensions normally occurs when light propagates through nanoscale inhomogeneous media or under tight focusing. In this regard, subwavelength scrutinizing the spatial distribution of such light attributes is of utmost importance. Here, we demonstrate a nanointerferometric scheme to map light's spin and orbital angular momentum with a subwavelength resolution via the interferometric scattering signal from a plasmonic nanohole. Abstract:We propose a scattering-type nano-polarimeter for probing the local spin density with subwavelength spatial resolution via the spin-orbital interactions at the nanoscale. The nano-polarimeter is simple to operate and can be applied to a variety of asymmetric nanoprobes, allowing direct data retrieval using two point detectors. Moreover, this technique is not limited to the spin-density detection but can also be used for the measurement of any given polarization states of light, no matter whether it is a free-space propagating wave or nonpropagating wave bound in the near-field region of nanostructures.

Abstract:Photonic spin-orbit interaction has attracted much attention in recent years. This talk first reports the efficient generation of ultra-compact optical vortex (OV) in achiral nanostructures, which has a radius of only 1 μm and possesses a signal-to-noise ratio larger than 6 dB. A spin-selective and phase-resolved scanning near-ﬁeld optical microscope (SNOM) is employed to probe and visualize the OV generation process in the spin basis. Furthermore, a SNOM system is developed for probing and analyzing nonlinear optical signals in nanostructures with subwavelength resolution, which images the near-field third-harmonic generation from an anapole dark-mode state in a silicon nanodisk.

Abstract:The interaction between a quantum particle's spin angular momentum and its orbital angular momentum is ubiquitous in nature. In optics, the spin-orbit optical phenomenon is closely related with the light-matter interaction and has been of great interest. With the development of laser technology, the high-power and ultrafast light sources now serve as a crucial tool in revealing the behaviour of matters under extreme conditions. The comprehensive knowledge of the spin-orbit interaction for the intense light is of utmost importance. Here, we achieve the in-situ modulation and visualization of the optical orbital-to-spin conversion in strong-field regime. We show that, through manipulating the morphology of femtosecond cylindrical vector vortex pulses by a slit, the photons' orbital angular momentum can be controllably transformed into spin after focusing. By employing strong-field ionization experiment, the orbital-to-spin conversion can be imaged and measured through the photoelectron momentum distributions. Such detection and consequent control of spin-orbit dynamics of intense laser fields have implications on controlling the photoelectron holography and coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation.

Abstract:The spin-orbit interaction of light is a fundamental manifestation of controlling its angular momenta with numerous applications in photonic spin Hall effects and chiral quantum optics. However, observation of an optical spin Hall effect, which is normally very weak with subwavelength displacements, needs quantum weak measurements or sophisticated metasurfaces. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the spin-orbit interaction of light in the form of strong chiroptical responses by breaking the in-plane inversion symmetry of a dielectric substrate. The chiroptical signal is observed at the boundary of a microdisk illuminated by circularly polarized vortex beams at normal incidence. The generated chiroptical spectra are tunable for different photonic orbital angular momenta and microdisk diameters. Our findings, correlating photonic spin-orbit interaction with chiroptical responses, may provide a route for exploiting optical information processing, enantioselective sensing, and chiral metrology.

Abstract:Besides a linear momentum, optical fields carry an angular momentum (AM), which have two intrinsic components: one is spin angular momentum (SAM) related to the polarization state of the field, and the other is orbital angular momentum (OAM) caused by the helical phase due to the existence of topological azimuthal charge. The two AM components of the optical field may not be independent of each other, and the Spin-to-Orbital AM conversion (STOC) under focusing will create a spin-dependent optical vortex in the longitudinal filed. Here we demonstrate a new mechanism (or novel way, new way, specific process) for the STOC based on a radial intensity gradient. The radial phase provides an effective way to control the local AM density, which induce counterintuitive orbital motion of isotropic particles in optical tweezers without intrinsic OAM. Our work not only provides fundamental insights into the spin-orbit interaction of light, but also push towards possible applications in optical micro-manipulation.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamic quantities: momentum, spin and orbital angular momenta（SAM and OAM）, and their conversion relationship in the structured optical fields at subwavelength scales, where the spin–orbit interaction（SOI） plays a key role and determines the behaviors of light. Specifically, we examine a nanostructure of a Ag nanoparticle（Ag NP）attached on a cylindrical Ag nanowire（Ag NW） under illumination of elliptically polarized light. These dynamic quantities obey the Noether theorem, i.e., for the Ag nanoparticle with spherical symmetry, the total angular momentum consisting of SAM and OAM conserves; for the Ag NW with translational symmetry, the orbital momentum conserves. Meanwhile, the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion is mediated by SOI arising from the spatial variation of the optical potential.In this nanostructure, the conservation of momentum imposes a strict restriction on the propagation direction of the surface plasmon polaritons along the Ag NW. Meanwhile, the orbital momentum is determined by the polarized properties of the excitation light and the topography of the Ag NP. Our work offers insights to comprehend the light behaviors in the structured optical fields in terms of the dynamic quantities and benefits to the design of optical nano-devices based on interactions between spin and orbital degrees of freedom.
The Effect of Glucose on the Release and Bioactivity of Exosomes From First Trimester Trophoblast Cells.

Abstract:CONTEXT Hyperglycemia and hypoxia are risk factors of metabolic complication during pregnancy. The interactions between oxygen and glucose-sensing pathways that regulate exosome bioactivity from placental cells, however, have not been established. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that exosomal signaling by placental cells (defined as the number of exosomes released per unit time and their bioactivity) is responsive to extracellular glucose concentration. METHODS First-trimester primary trophoblast cells were incubated with D-glucose (5 mM or 25 mM) under 1%, 3%, or 8% O2 for 48 hours. Exosomes were isolated from cell-conditioned media by differential and buoyant density centrifugation. The total number of exosome vesicles was determined by quantifying immunoreactive exosomal CD63. The effect of exosomes on cytokine (granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6. IL-8, IL-10, interferon-γ, and TNF-α) release from endothelial cells was established by a protein solution array analysis. RESULTS Glucose (25 mM) significantly increased the release of exosomes from trophoblast cells at all oxygen tensions tested (by approximately 2-fold when compared with controls, P < .001). Exosomes (100 μg/mL exosomal protein) released from trophoblast cells significantly increased (P < .05) the release of all cytokines from human umbilical vein endothelial cells when compared with the control (ie, cells without exosomes), with the exception of IL-2 and IL-10 (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS The effects of high glucose on exosomes bioactivity may be recapitulated in vivo and is of clinical relevance in association with maternal insulin resistance (resulting in hyperglycemia) and preeclampsia (associated with placental insufficiency and hypoxia).
Single-Shot Orientation Imaging of Nanorods Using Spin-to-Orbital Angular Momentum Conversion of Light

Abstract:The key information about any nanoscale system are orientations and conformations of its parts. Unfortunately, these details are often hidden below the diffraction limit and elaborate techniques must be used to optically probe them. Here, we present a single-shot imaging technique allowing time-resolved monitoring of rotation motion of metal nanorods, realized in a wide-field regime and with no ambiguity of the measured angles. In our novel method, the nanorod orientation is imprinted onto a geometric phase of scattered light composed of the opposite spin states. By spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion, we generate two oppositely winding helical waves (optical vortices) that are used for restoring the nanorod in-plane orientation. The method was calibrated using lithographically fabricated nanorods and tested by the rotation imaging of immobilized and moving sub-100 nm colloidal nanorods (measurement accuracy of 2.5{\deg}). We envision this technique can be used also for estimation of nanorod aspect ratios and their out-of-plane orientations.

Abstract:Photonic spin-orbit interactions (PSOIs) in nanostructures have attracted much interest in nanophotonics, which provide a new paradigm to enhance light-matter interactions and engineer the wavefronts of light on demand at the nanoscale. Many striking phenomena and functionalities, such as the photonic (quantum) spin-Hall effect and the spin-vortex conversion, have been demonstrated. Besides their underlying physics and manifestations, the experimental probing and imaging of PSOIs are also of great importance and highly demanded in not only the fundamental research but also the development of emerging PSOI technologies. Hence, in this review, the state-of-the-art studies on the experimental observations and detections of PSOIs are systematically reviewed, including both the far-field and near-field methods. The respective advantages and difficulties of each method are stated and analyzed. The perspectives in probing PSOIs are also discussed.
Orbital-to-Spin Angular Momentum Conversion Employing Local Helicity

Abstract:Spin-orbit interactions in optics traditionally describe an influence of the polarization degree of freedom of light on its spatial properties. The most prominent example is the generation of a spin-dependent optical vortex upon focusing or scattering of a circularly polarized plane-wave by a nanoparticle, converting spin to orbital angular momentum of light. Here, we present a mechanism of conversion of orbital-to-spin angular momentum of light upon scattering of a linearly polarized vortex beam by a spherical silicon nanoparticle. We show that focused linearly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beams of first order ($\ell = \pm 1$) exhibit an $\ell$-dependent spatial distribution of helicity density in the focal volume. By using a dipolar scatterer the helicity density can be manipulated locally, while influencing globally the spin and orbital angular momentum of the beam. Specifically, the scattered light can be purely circularly polarized with the handedness depending on the orbital angular momentum of the incident beam. We corroborate our findings with theoretical calculations and an experimental demonstration. Our work sheds new light on the global and local properties of helicity conservation laws in electromagnetism.

Abstract:Light that carries linear or angular momentum can interact with a mechanical object, giving rise to optomechanical effects. In particular, a photon can transfer its intrinsic angular momentum to an object when the object either absorbs the photon or changes the photon polarization, as in an action/reaction force pair. Here, we demonstrate resonant driving of torsional mechanical modes of a single-mode tapered optical nanofiber using spin angular momentum. The nanofiber torsional mode spectrum is characterized by polarimetry, showing narrow natural resonances (Q≈2,000). By sending amplitude-modulated light through the nanofiber, we resonantly drive individual torsional modes as a function of the light polarization. By varying the input polarization to the fiber, we find the largest amplification of a mechanical oscillation (>35 dB) is observed when driving the system with light containing longitudinal spin on the nanofiber waist. These results present optical nanofibers as a platform suitable for quantum spin-optomechanics experiments.

Abstract:The momentum space elastic scattering pattern from a monocrystalline silver nanowire has been utilized for the simultaneous detection of spin and orbital angular momentum of light beams. In recent times the spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light have gained prominence because of their significance in optical communication systems, micromanipulation, and sub‐wavelength position sensing. To this end, simultaneous detection of SAM and OAM of light beam is one of the important topics of research from both application and fundamental spin‐orbit interaction (SOI) point of view. While interferometry and metasurface based approaches have been able to detect the states, the presented approach involves elastic scattering from a monocrystalline silver nanowire for the simultaneous detection of SAM and OAM state of a circularly polarized Laguerre–Gaussian beam. By employing Fourier plane (FP) microscopy, the transmitted scattered light intensity distribution in the FP is analyzed to reconstruct the SAM and OAM state unambiguously. The SAM and OAM induced transverse energy flow as well as the polarization dependent scattering characteristics of the nanowire is investigated to understand the detection mechanism. This method is devoid of complex nanofabrication techniques and to the authors' knowledge, is a first example of single nano‐object based simultaneous SAM and OAM detection. The study will further the understanding of SOI effects and can be useful for on‐chip optical detection and manipulation.

A comprehensive study of the Spin-Hall effect of tightly focused linearly polarized light through a stratified medium in optical tweezers

Abstract:The optical Spin-Hall effect originates from the interaction between the spin angular momentum (SAM) and extrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light, leading to mutual interrelations between the polarization and trajectory of light in case of non-paraxial fields. Here, we extensively study the SHE and the resultant Spin-Hall shifts (SHS) in optical tweezers (OT) by varying the numerical aperture of objective lenses, and the refractive index (RI) stratification of the trapping medium. Indeed, we obtain much larger values of the SHS for particular combinations of NA and stratification compared to the sub-wavelength orders typically reported. We also observe that the longitudinal component of the spin angular momentum (SAM) density - which is responsible for the spin of birefringent particles in optical tweezers - changes more-or-less monotonically with the lens numerical aperture, except around values of the latter where the angle subtended by the focused light equals the critical angle for a particular RI interface. Our results may find applications in designing experiments for tuning the SHS and SAM induced due to SOI to generate exotic optomechanics of trapped particles in optical tweezers.

Abstract:As one fundamental property of light, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photon has elicited widespread interest. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that the OAM conversion of light without any spin state can occur in homogeneous and isotropic medium when a specially tailored locally linearly polarized (STLLP) beam is strongly focused by a high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens. Through a high NA objective lens, the STLLP beams can generate identical twin foci with tunable distance between them controlled by input state of polarization. Such process admits partial OAM conversion from linear state to conjugate OAM states, giving rise to helical phases with opposite directions for each focus of the longitudinal component in the focal field.

Abstract:The photon spin is an important resource for quantum information processing as is the electron spin in spintronics. However, for subwavelength confined optical excitations, polarization as a global property of a mode cannot be defined. Here, we show that any polarization state of a plane-wave photon can reversibly be mapped to a pseudo-spin embodied by the two fundamental modes of a subwavelength plasmonic two-wire transmission line. We design a device in which this pseudo-spin evolves in a well-defined fashion throughout the device reminiscent of the evolution of photon polarization in a birefringent medium and the behaviour of electron spins in the channel of a spin field-effect transistor. The significance of this pseudo-spin is enriched by the fact that it is subject to spin-orbit locking. Combined with optically active materials to exert external control over the pseudo-spin precession, our findings could enable spin-optical transistors, i.e. the routing and processing of quantum information with light on a subwavelength scale.

Abstract:To detect the magnetic component of arbitrary unknown optical fields, a candidate probe must meet a list of demanding requirements, including a spatially isotropic magnetic response, suppressed electric effect, and wide operating bandwidth. Here, we show that a silicon nanoparticle satisfies all these requirements, and its optical magnetism driven multiphoton luminescence enables direct mapping of the magnetic field intensity distribution of a tightly focused femtosecond laser beam with varied polarization orientation and spatially overlapped electric and magnetic components.
