Abstract:ObjectiveTo determine whether transcranial magnetic stimulation over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex produces pathologic changes or leakage of the blood-brain barrier in patients with depression by using apparent diffusion coefficient magnetic resonance imaging. BackgroundTranscranial magnetic stimulation is a new technology for noninvasively stimulating the brain. It appears to be a relatively safe technique, with some important exceptions. Its neurobiologic mechanisms of action are poorly understood. One theory to explain its apparent antidepressant effects involves a potential change in local blood-brain barrier settings, allowing passage of peripheral substances directly into brain parenchyma. Knowing whether transcranial magnetic stimulation changes local brain diffusion is important as well from a safety perspective. To test whether transcranial magnetic stimulation changes local brain diffusion, we used apparent diffusion coefficient magnetic resonance imaging in depressed patients undergoing interleaved transcranial magnetic stimulation/functional magnetic resonance imaging over the left prefrontal cortex. MethodsWithin a 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging scanner, 14 depressed patients were stimulated with a figure-eight transcranial magnetic stimulation coil over the left prefrontal cortex. Apparent diffusion coefficient magnetic resonance imaging was acquired before, and immediately after, 1 Hertz transcranial magnetic stimulation (147 stimuli) intermittently delivered at a motor threshold of more than 7.35 minutes. Phase maps of the transcranial magnetic stimulation magnetic fields were used to guide region-of-interest placement. ResultsNo significant qualitative apparent diffusion coefficient differences were observed before and after 1 Hertz transcranial magnetic stimulation underneath the coil. ConclusionsOne Hertz transcranial magnetic stimulation over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex as applied in this study did not result in pathologic changes or leakage of the blood-brain barrier in patients with depression. If prefrontal transcranial magnetic stimulation at these usage parameters changes local diffusion, it is not an obvious or large effect.

Based on progressive type-II censored and masked data, the maximum likelihood estimates for the parameters and acceleration factors are obtained by using the decomposition approach. In addition, this method can also be applied to the Bayes estimates, which are too complex to obtain as usual way. Finally, a Monte Carlo simulation study is carried out to verify the accuracy of the methods under different masking probabilities and censoring schemes.
Trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid reduces milk fat content and lipogenic gene expression in the mammary gland of sows without altering litter performance

Abstract:Trans -10, cis -12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) decreases milk fat synthesis in lactating sows and involves, at least in part, the down-regulation of lipogenic genes. The objective was to evaluate the effect of CLA on milk composition and lipogenic gene expression. Twenty multiparous sows were randomly assigned to one of the two treatments for 18 d (from day 7 to day 25 of lactation): (1) control (no CLA added) and (2) 1 % of CLA mixed into the ration. CLA treatment decreased milk fat and protein content by 20 % ( P = 0·004) and 11 % ( P = 0·0001), respectively. However, piglet weight did not differ between treatments ( P = 0·60). Dietary CLA increased the concentration of SFA in milk fat by 16 % ( P < 0·0001) and decreased MUFA by 17·6 % ( P < 0·0001). In the mammary gland, CLA reduced gene expression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase- α by 37 % ( P = 0·003), fatty acid synthase by 64 % ( P = 0·002), stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 by 52 % ( P = 0·003), lipoprotein lipase by 26 % ( P = 0·03), acyl glycerol phosphate acyltransferase 6 by 15 % ( P = 0·02) and diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 by 27 % ( P = 0·02), whereas the expression of fatty acid binding protein 3 was not altered by CLA treatment ( P = 0·09). Mammary expression of casein- β and α -lactalbumin was reduced by CLA by 68 % ( P = 0·0004) and 62 % ( P = 0·005), respectively. Additionally, CLA had no effect on the expression of lipogenic genes evaluated in adipose tissue. In summary, CLA reduced milk fat content without negatively affecting litter performance and it affected mammary expression of genes involved in all lipogenic pathways studied.

Abstract:It is now well understood that, although proteins fold spontaneously (in a thermodynamic sense), many nevertheless require the assistance of helpers called molecular chaperones to reach their correct and active folded state in living cells. This is because the pathways of protein folding are full of traps for the unwary: the forces that drive proteins into their folded states can also drive them into insoluble aggregates, and, particularly when cells are stressed, this can lead, without prevention or correction, to cell death. The chaperonins are a family of molecular chaperones, practically ubiquitous in all living organisms, which possess a remarkable structure and mechanism of action. They act as nanoboxes in which proteins can fold, isolated from their environment and from other partners with which they might, with potentially deleterious consequences, interact. The opening and closing of these boxes is timed by the binding and hydrolysis of ATP. The chaperonins which are found in bacteria are extremely well characterized, and, although those found in archaea (also known as thermosomes) and eukaryotes have received less attention, our understanding of these proteins is constantly improving. This short review will summarize what we know about chaperonin function in the cell from studies on the archaeal chaperonins, and show how recent work is improving our understanding of this essential class of molecular chaperones.
Production performance and pattern of milk fat depression of high-yielding dairy cows supplemented with encapsulated conjugated linoleic acid

Abstract:Several processes have been suggested to protect lipids from bioactivity of the rumen microorganisms. The majority of experiments with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) were conducted using calcium salts of CLA. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of encapsulated CLA (E-CLA) that was supplemented during days 21 to 100 post partum (PP), on milk fat depression, recovery rate and performance parameters. Forty-two multiparous Israeli-Holstein cows were divided at day 21 PP into two treatment groups: (i) control - supplemented with 43 g/day per cow of calcium salts of fatty acids (FAs). (ii) E-CLA - supplemented with 50 g/day per cow of encapsulated lipid supplement providing 4.7 g/day per cow of trans-10, cis-12 CLA. Post-treatment cows were followed for recovery rate until 140 days PP. Dry matter intake (DMI) during the treatment period was reduced by 2.5%, and milk yield was enhanced by 4.5% in the E-CLA cows. Milk fat percentage and yield were reduced by 13% and 9%, respectively, in the E-CLA treatment as compared with the control. The energy-corrected milk output was 3.6% higher in the control group than in the E-CLA group. Yields of trans-10, cis-12 CLA isomer in milk was 2.13-fold higher in the E-CLA cows than in the controls. Full recovery to milk fat percentage of the control group occurred 4 to 5 weeks after cessation of the E-CLA supplementation. No differences between groups were observed in any fertility parameter that was tested. In conclusion, the E-CLA supplement decreased DMI, enhanced milk yield, and decreased energy output in milk, and was effective in depressing milk fat. Full recovery to the milk fat content, but not yield, of the control group in the E-CLA group was relatively slow and occurred 4 to 5 weeks after termination of the supplementation.

Abstract:Dietary fatty acids (FAs) determine the quality of dairy products. The trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (t10c12-CLA) is commonly considered an FA factor leading to milk fat depression syndrome (MFDs) in dairy cow. However, its effect on dairy cow performance and involvement in milk fat metabolism have been insufficiently explored. This study administered 136.17 g/day of rumen-protected CLA (RP-CLA) to dairy cows and found a diminution in milk fat percentage and a trend of increasing milk protein percentage on day 21 postpartum. Lactose content, milk yield, and net energy for lactation were unaffected. In the cell experiments, Oil Red O staining showed a notable increase in lipid droplets. Gene and protein expression analysis showed that 300 μM t10c12-CLA upregulated the expression of CD36, DGAT2, and ADRP, while downregulating the expression of ACACA, FASN, SREBP1, FABP3, FATP3, ACSL4, LPIN1, DGAT1, BTN1A1, XDH, SNAP23, and VAMP4. This provides a possible mechanistic pathway for the contradictory phenomenon of t10c12-CLA reducing milk fat while increasing lipid droplets. Overall, t10c12-CLA, as a long-chain fatty acid, can promote lipid droplet synthesis but may reduce milk fat by inhibiting lipid droplet fusion and secretion, FAs de novo synthesis, and triglyceride biosynthesis.

Abstract:Despite the growing acknowledgment of the necessity for patient safety initiatives to address medical errors, the role of managed care organizations (MCOs) in these programs has only recently been challenged. Managed care quality improvement programs have mainly focused upon pay-for-performance initiatives, largely ignoring specific patient safety efforts. To effectively reduce medical errors, MCOs must leverage their unique positions to influence and educate both providers and consumers. This article describes MCOs' self-implemented barriers to quality improvement, and early initiatives by MCOs to encourage safe practices, including pay-for-performance. An approach for MCOs to facilitate progress and inspire a culture of patient safety is discussed. Avenues for strengthening the organizational and technological infrastructure of the health care system from a managed care perspective are examined, and strategies for implementing best practices within the constraints of managed care are explored. System-wide solutions that address the critical areas of culture, infrastructure, and best practices are necessary to continue to make significant strides in reducing medical errors and prioritizing patient safety.
Size, number and phospholipid composition of milk fat globules are affected by dietary conjugated linoleic acid

Abstract:Milk fat globules (MFGs) surround the triacylglycerol core that composes milk fat. The aim of this study is to induce milk fat depression via dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplementation to study MFG size parameters, number and glycerophospholipid composition. Eighteen Holstein dairy cows (136 ± 28 days in milk, 571 ± 37.9 kg body weight, 27.6 ± 2.1 kg milk/day) were selected and randomly assigned to a control or CLA group for a 14-day period. Cows were fed a basal diet (control, n = 8) or the control plus 400 g/day CLA (C18:2 cis-9, trans-11 38.1% and C18:2 trans-10, cis-12 36.8%) (n = 10) for 7 days after which the CLA group was switched to the basal diet for another 7 days along with the control group. Cow performance, milk composition, MFG size and numbers were measured daily. On the seventh day after the start of the experiment, milk samples were identified and the quantification of glycerophospholipid compounds, and RNA were isolated from milk fat samples for a real-time polymerase chain reaction. Compared with control, at Day 7 from the start of feeding, supplemental CLA did not affect milk production (28.09 vs. 28.50 kg/day), dry matter intake (14.9 vs. 15.4 kg/day), or milk protein (3.55/100 vs. 3.70 g/100 ml) and lactose contents (5.11/100 vs. 5.17 g/100 ml). However, although the specific surface area of MFG (2138 vs. 1815 m²/kg) was greater, CLA reduced milk fat content (1.95/100 vs 3.64 g/100 ml on Day 7) and particle size parameters of MFG. The number of MFG gradually decreased until Day 7 of feeding, and then increased by Day 14 (2.96 × 109 on Day 1, 1.63 × 109 on Day 7 and 2.28 × 109 on Day 14) in the CLA group. Compared with control, glycerophospholipid analysis revealed that concentrations of phosphatidylcholine (PC) (e.g., PC [16:0/18:1] 20322 vs. 29793 nmol/L), lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LPE) (e.g., LPE [18:1] 956 vs. 4610 nmol/L) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) (e.g., PE [16:0/18:1] 7000 vs. 9769 nmol/L) in milk lipids decreased during CLA feeding. In contrast, concentrations of phosphatidylinositol (PI) (e.g., PI [18:0/18:1] 4052 vs. 1799 nmol/L) and phosphatidylserine (PS) (e.g., PS [18:1/18:2] 9500 vs. 6843 nmol/L) increased. The messenger RNA abundance of fatty acid synthase, diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1, glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase 4 and phosphate cytidylyltransferase 1, choline, alpha (PCYT1A) were downregulated in the CLA group, confirming published data demonstrating a negative effect of CLA on lipogenesis in the mammary gland. Overall, these results provided evidence for the important role of lipogenic gene expression in the regulation of MFG size, number and glycerophospholipid composition.

Abstract:The effect of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on milk lipids and on the size of milk fat globules (MFGs) during milk fat depression in dairy cows was evaluated. Twelve Holstein cows were randomly assigned to a control diet or control plus Ca-protected CLA at 15 g kg-1 dry matter for an 8-day period. Feeding CLA did not affect milk production, dry matter intake or lactose level, but tended to reduced milk protein (–0.19%; P = 0.08) and reduced milk fat content (–1.39%; P < 0.01). Compared with the controls, the size of MFGs in cows fed CLA was lower, while their specific surface area was higher. CLA supplementation reduced the relative contents of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine in milk fat.

Abstract:Primary bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs) were treated by 0, 37.5, 75, 112.5, 150 mol/L trans10, cis12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) to evaluate the effects of different level trans10, cis12 CLA on lipogenesis in BMEC. Addition of 75-150 mol/L trans10, cis12 CLA reduced significantly the triacylglycerol (TAG) content (P < 0.05), but did not have inhibiting action on cell proliferation (P > 0.05). Treatment with 150 mol/L trans10, cis12 CLA for 48 h resulted in a 17.1% reduction (P < 0.0001) of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA, C14 < C < C16), a 26.5% reduction (P < 0.0001) of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) and a corresponding reduction of the mRNA abundance of acetyl coenzyme A (acetylCoA) carboxylase (ACC) (P = 0.046), fatty acid synthase (FAS) (P = 0.017) and stearoylCoA desaturase1 (SCD1) (P = 0.002). Another finding was that trans10, cis12 CLA elevated expression of diacylglycerol acyltransferase2 (DGAT2) (P = 0.020) and long chain acylCoA synthetases (ACSL) (P = 0.032). In conclusion, higher trans10, cis12 CLA, not low trans10, cis12 CLA, inhibited milk fat synthesis and changed fatty acid composition by regulating the expression of FAS, ACC, SCD1, DGAT2 and ACSL.

Abstract:As a valuable nutrient in milk, fat accounts for a significant proportion of the energy requirements of ruminants and is largely responsible for determining milk quality. Fatty acids (FAs) are a pivotal component of milk fat. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is one of the naturally occurring FAs prevalent in ruminant dairy products and meat. Increasing attention has been given to CLA because of its anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, immune regulation, and lipid metabolism regulation properties, and these benefits potentially contribute to the growth and health of infants. In breast milk, CLA is present in trace amounts, mainly in the form of cis-9, trans-11 CLA. Notably, cis-9, trans-11 CLA improves the milk fat rate while trans-10, cis-12 CLA inhibits it. Apart from having multiple physiological functions, CLA is also a pivotal factor in determining the milk quality of ruminants, especially milk fat rate. In response to growing interest in green and healthy functional foods, more and more researchers are exploring the potential of CLA to improve the production performance of animals and the nutritional value of livestock products. Taken together, it is novel and worthwhile to investigate how CLA regulates milk fat synthesis. It is the purpose of this review to clarify the necessity for studying CLA in ruminant milk fat and breast milk fat.

Abstract:Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a group of positional and geometric isomers of conjugated dienoic derivatives of linoleic acid. The major dietary source of CLA for humans is ruminant meats, such as beef and lamb, and dairy products, such as milk and cheese. The major isomer of CLA in natural food is cis-9,trans-11 (c9,t11). The commercial preparations contain approximately equal amounts of c9,t11 and trans-10,cis-12 (t10,c12) isomers. Studies have shown that CLA, specifically the t10,c12-isomer, can reduce fat tissue deposition and body lipid content but appears to induce insulin resistance and fatty liver and spleen in various animals. A few human studies suggest that CLA supplementation has no effect on body weight and could reduce body fat to a much lesser extent than in animals. To draw conclusions on this form of dietary supplementation and to ultimately make appropriate recommendations, further human studies are required. The postulated antiobesity mechanisms of CLA include decreased energy and food intakes, decreased lipogenesis, and increased energy expenditure, lipolysis, and fat oxidation. This review addresses recent studies of the effects of CLA on lipid metabolism, fat deposition, and body composition in both animals and humans as well as the mechanisms surrounding these effects.

Abstract:Feeding dietary supplements containing trans-10, cis-12-conjugated linoleic acid (t10,c12-CLA) has been shown to induce milk fat depression in cows, ewes and goats. However, the magnitude of the response is apparently less pronounced in lactating goats. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of increasing doses of CLA methyl esters (CLA-ME) on milk production, composition and fatty-acid profile of dairy goats. Eight Toggenburg goats were separated in two groups (four primiparous and four multiparous) and received the following dietary treatments in a 4×4 Latin Square design: CLA0: 45 g/day of calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA); CLA15; 30 g/day of CSFA+15 g/day of CLA-ME; CLA30: 15 g/day of CSFA+30 g/day of CLA-ME; and CLA45: 45 g/day of CLA-ME. The CLA-ME supplement (Luta-CLA 60) contained 29.9% of t10,c12-CLA; therefore, the dietary treatments provided 0, 4.48, 8.97 and 13.45 g/day of t10,c12-CLA, respectively. Feed intake, milk production, concentration and secretion of milk protein and lactose, body condition score and body weight were unaffected by the dietary treatments. Milk fat secretion was reduced by 14.9%, 30.8% and 40.5%, whereas milk fat concentration was decreased by 17.2%, 33.1% and 40.7% in response to CLA15, CLA30 and CLA45, respectively. Secretions of both de novo synthesized and preformed fatty acids were progressively reduced as the CLA dose increased, but the magnitude of the inhibition was greater for the former. There was a linear reduction in most milk fat desaturase indexes (14:1/14:0, 16:1/16:0, 17:1/17:0 and 18:1/18:0). Milk fat t10,c12-CLA concentration and secretion increased with the CLA dose, and its apparent transfer efficiency from diet to milk was 1.18%, 1.17% and 1.21% for CLA15, CLA30 and CLA45 treatments, respectively. The estimated energy balance was linearly improved in goats fed CLA.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to determine the effects of milk fat depression induced by supplementing conjugated linoleic acid (CLA; trans-10,cis-12 and cis-9,trans-11 CLA) or feeding a higher starch and oil-containing diet (HSO) on metabolic changes in dairy cows after calving. The main hypothesis was that the 2 strategies to decrease milk fat yield could have different effects on performance, energy balance (EB), and inflammatory status in early lactation. Thirty-three Nordic Red dairy cows were used in a randomized block design from 1 to 112 d of lactation and fed one of the following treatments: control (CON), CLA-supplemented diet, or HSO diet. Dry matter intake and milk yield were measured daily whereas milk composition was measured weekly throughout the experiment. Nutrient digestibility, EB, and plasma hormones and metabolites were measured at 3, 7, 11, and 15 wk of lactation in respiration chambers. The HSO diet led to lower intakes of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, and gross energy compared with CON and CLA diets. The CLA diet and especially the HSO diet resulted in lower energy-corrected milk yield during the first 7 wk of lactation than those fed CON. The EB was numerically higher for HSO and CLA diets compared with CON at wk 3 and 7. Plasma glucose concentration was higher by the CLA diet at wk 3 and by the HSO diet from wk 3 to 15 compared with CON. Plasma nonesterified fatty acids were higher at wk 3 in the CON group (indicating more lipid mobilization) but decreased thereafter to similar levels with the other groups. The HSO-fed cows had higher plasma ceruloplasmin, paraoxonase, and total bilirubin concentrations in the entire experiment and showed the highest levels of reactive oxygen metabolites. These results suggest an increased inflammatory and oxidative stress state in the HSO cows and probably different regulation of the innate immune system. This study provides evidence that milk fat depression induced by feeding HSO (as well as CLA) decreased milk fat secretion and improved EB compared with CON in early lactation. The increase in plasma glucose and paraoxonase levels with the HSO diet may imply a better ability of the liver to cope with the metabolic demand after parturition. However, the negative effect of HSO on feed intake, and the indication of increased inflammatory and oxidative stress warrant further studies before the HSO feeding strategy could be supported as an alternative to improve EB in early lactation.
Short communication: A decrease in diameter of milk fat globules accompanies milk fat depression induced by conjugated linoleic acid supplementation in lactating dairy cows

Abstract:Milk fat is secreted from the mammary gland in the form of milk fat globules (MFG). Although milk fat depression has been studied since the beginning of the last century, the extent to which this phenomenon alters MFG synthesis is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on the size and distribution of MFG during milk fat depression in dairy cows. Twelve Holstein cows in mid lactation (145 ± 31 d in milk, 583 ± 34.6 kg of body weight, and 27.2 ± 2.4 kg of milk/d) were randomly assigned to a control diet or control plus Ca-protected CLA at 15 g/kg of dry matter for a 6-d period. The average diameter and particle size distribution of MFG were measured using a Mastersizer 3000 laser particle size analyzer (Malvern Instruments Ltd., Malvern, UK). Feeding CLA did not affect dry matter intake (16.2 ± 0.4 kg/d), milk production (28.4 ± 0.4 kg/d), milk protein, or lactose, but it decreased milk fat content (3.46 vs. 2.52%). In addition, surface area-related mean diameter of fat globules in cows fed CLA was lower compared with controls (3.02 vs. 3.45 μm). The percentage of large fat globules decreased and that of small fat globules increased in response to CLA. Overall, the data suggest that the milk fat depression induced by CLA is accompanied by a decrease in average diameter of MFG.
Neuromuscular and hormonal responses to constant and variable resistance loadings.

Abstract:PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of constant and variable resistance exercise on neuromuscular and endocrine responses during maximal strength and hypertrophic loadings. METHODS Thirteen young men (age = 28.4 ± 3.7 yr) took part in four loadings (maximal strength and hypertrophic loadings using both constant and variable resistance) in a counterbalanced order. Maximal strength loadings consisted of 15 sets of one repetition at 100% one-repetition maximum, and hypertrophic loadings consisted of five sets of 10 repetitions (initial load of 80% one-repetition maximum). Preloading, immediately postloading, 15 min postloading, and 30 min postloading tests consisted of maximal bilateral isometric leg press, venous blood samples (analyzed for total testosterone, growth hormone, and cortisol), and fingertip blood lactate samples. Concentric force and vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, rectus femoris, and biceps femoris EMG was recorded throughout each loading protocol and analyzed over 20° segments. RESULTS Force and quadriceps EMG was greater from 120° to 180° knee angle (P < 0.05) during variable resistance hypertrophic loadings. Larger increases in concentric quadriceps muscle activation and slower recovery in isometric force and muscle activation were observed during variable resistance hypertrophic loadings. Preloading to postloading serum total testosterone, growth hormone, and cortisol concentration increased during variable resistance hypertrophic loading, whereas during constant resistance loadings, only growth hormone increased (P = 0.051). During 30 min postloading, growth hormone and cortisol concentrations remained elevated after both hypertrophic loadings. CONCLUSIONS A greater level of neuromuscular fatigue and larger responses in serum hormone concentrations occurred after hypertrophic variable resistance loading. These findings indicate greater fatigability during variable resistance loading and that this fatigability influences acute hormonal responses.
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) modulates bovine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) proteome in vitro

Abstract:Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a group of natural isomers of the n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) linoleic acid, exerting biological effects on cow physiology. This study assessed the impact of the mixture 50:50 (vol:vol) of CLA isomers (cis-9, trans-11 and trans-10, cis-12) on bovine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) proteome, identifying 1608 quantifiable proteins. A supervised multivariate statistical analysis, sparse variant partial least squares - discriminant analysis (sPLS-DA) for paired data identified 407 discriminant proteins (DP), allowing the clustering between the CLA and controls. The ProteINSIDE workflow found that DP with higher abundance in the CLA group included proteins related to innate immune defenses (PLIN2, CD36, C3, C4, and AGP), with antiapoptotic (SERPINF2 and ITIH4) and antioxidant effects (HMOX1). These results demonstrated that CLA modulates the bovine PBMC proteome, supports the antiapoptotic and immunomodulatory effects observed in previous in vitro studies on bovine PBMC, and suggests a cytoprotective role against oxidative stress. SIGNIFICANCE: In this study, we report for the first time that the mixture 50:50 (vol:vol) of cis-9, trans-11, and trans-10, cis-12-CLA isomers modulates the bovine PBMC proteome. Our results support the immunomodulatory and antiapoptotic effects observed in bovine PBMC in vitro. In addition, the present study proposes a cytoprotective role of CLA mixture against oxidative stress. We suggest a molecular signature of CLA treatment based on combining a multivariate sparse discriminant analysis and a clustering method. This demonstrates the great value of sPLS-DA as an alternative option to identify discriminant proteins with relevant biological significance.
