Abstract:Randomly blinking nanocrystals have given rise to numerous and intense theoretical and experimental investigations recently. An experimental breakthrough was finally made by fabricating the non-blinking Cd$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$Se/ZnSe graded nanocrystal [Nature 459 (2009) 686]. Here, we report (1) an unequivocal and detailed theoretical investigation to understand the properties of the potential-well and the distribution of Zn content with respect to the nanocrystal radius and (2) develop a strategy to find the relationship between the photoluminescence (PL) energy peaks and the potential-well due to Zn distribution in nanocrystals. We found that the non-square-well potential can be varied in such a way that one can indeed control the PL intensity and the energy-level difference (PL energy peaks) in any non-free-electron nanocrystals accurately. This implies that we can either suppress the blinking altogether, or alternatively, manipulate the PL energy peaks and intensities systematically to give non-random blinking. Our theoretical strategy developed here is generic and can be applied to any non-free-electron nanocrystals.

Abstract:Applications of semiconductor nanocrystals such as biomarkers and light-emitting optoelectronic devices require that their fluorescence quantum yield be close to 100%. However, such quantum yields have not been obtained yet, in part, because non-radiative Auger recombination in charged nanocrystals could not be suppressed completely. Here, we synthesize colloidal core/thick-shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals with 100% quantum yield and completely quenched Auger processes at low temperatures, although the nanocrystals are negatively photocharged. Single particle and ensemble spectroscopy in the temperature range 30–300 K shows that the non-radiative Auger recombination is thermally activated around 200 K. Experimental results are well described by a model suggesting a temperature-dependent delocalization of one of the trion electrons from the CdSe core and enhanced Auger recombination at the abrupt CdS outer surface. These results point to a route for the design of core/shell structures with 100% quantum yield at room temperature.

Abstract:Abstract Almost all colloidal quantum dots (QDs) exhibit undesired photoluminescence (PL) blinking, which poses a significant obstacle to their use in numerous luminescence applications. An in‐depth study of the blinking behavior, along with the associated mechanisms, can provide critical opportunities for fabricating high‐quality QDs for diverse applications. Here the blinking of a large series of colloidal QDs is investigated with different surface ligands, particle sizes, shell thicknesses, and compositions. It is found that the blinking behavior of single alloyed CdSe/ZnS QDs with a shell thickness of up to 2 nm undergoes an irreversible conversion from Auger‐blinking to band‐edge carrier blinking (BC‐blinking). Contrastingly, single perovskite QDs with particle sizes smaller than their Bohr diameters exhibit reversible conversion between BC‐blinking and more pronounced Auger‐blinking. Changes in the effective trapping sites under different excitation conditions are found to be responsible for the blinking type conversions. Additionally, changes in shell thickness and particle size of QDs have a significant effect on the blinking type conversions due to altered wavefunction overlap between excitons and effective trapping sites. This study elucidates the discrepancies in the blinking behavior of various QD samples observed in previous reports and provides deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying diverse types of blinking.

Influence of Morphology on Blinking Mechanisms and Excitonic Fine Structure of Single Colloidal Nanoplatelets

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) with electronic structure as quantum wells have recently emerged as exciting materials for optoelectronic applications. Here we investigate how morphology affects important photoluminescence (PL) properties of single CdSe and core/shell CdSe/CdZnS nanoplatelets. By analyzing PL intensity-lifetime correlation and second-order photon correlation results, we demonstrate that, irrespective of morphology, Auger recombination cannot be responsible for PL blinking of single NPLs. We propose that hot carrier trapping plays a significant role in blinking and find that a rough shell induces additional nonradiative channels presumably related to defects or traps of an imperfect shell. Polarization-resolved PL spectroscopy analysis reveals exciton fine-structure splitting on the order of several tens of meV in rough-shell NPLs at room temperature, which is attributed to exciton localization and substantiated with theoretical calculations taking into account the NPL shape and electron-hole exchange interaction.

Abstract:CdSe/ZnS colloidal quantum dot generally exists blinking phenomenon during luminescence process, that remarkably influences its application as a single photon source. In this work, we used the effect of surface plasmon to effectively suppressed the blinking by locating quantum dot on gold film. The anti-bunching character was also observed with g((2))(0) as low as 0.34 at room temperature. Surface plasmon was shown to enhance the photoluminescence and reduce the lifetime of exciton, which was controlled by excitation power. Our result suggests a potential way to utilize CdSe/ZnS as a high efficient single photon emitter in optics.

Abstract:CdSe/ZnS colloidal quantum dots generally exist as blinking phenomena during the luminescence process that remarkably influences its applications. In this work, we used the surface plasmonic effect to effectively modulate single quantum dots. Obvious contrasts have been observed by comparing single quantum dots on silica and gold films. The surface plasmon is shown to obviously suppress the blinking of single quantum dots. With further demonstrated second- order correlation measurements, an anti-bunching effect was observed. The anti-bunching dip gives the smallest value of g(2)(0) = 0.15, and the lifetime of the exciton has been reduced. This method presents the application's potential towards tunable high-emitting-speed single photon sources at room temperature.

Abstract:Here we report the first series of phase-pure zinc-blende CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with reproducibly controlled shell thickness (4-16 monolayers), which are nonblinking (≥95% 'on' time) in single-exciton regime for the entire series. These unique QDs possess well-controlled yet simple excited-state decay dynamics at both single-dot and ensemble levels, extremely small nonblinking volume threshold, if any, and unique 'on' and 'off' probability statistics. The outstanding optical properties of the QDs at the single-dot level were found to be correlated well with their ensemble properties. These small and bright nonblinking QDs offer promising technical application prospect in both single-dot and ensemble levels. The consistent and reproducible experimental results shed new light on the mechanisms of blinking of QDs.
Bright nonblinking photoluminescence with blinking lifetime from a nanocavity-coupled quantum dot

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are excellent luminescent nanomaterials for a broad range of optoelectronic applications. Their photoluminescence blinking, however, hinders their practical use in many aspects. It has been shown that coupling QDs to plasmonic nanostructures may provide a viable way to suppress blinking. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism of blinking suppression remains unclear and debated. Here, by deterministically coupling a single QD to a plasmonic nanocavity, we clarify the mechanism of blinking suppression, and demonstrate unprecedentedly bright emission from a single colloidal QD. In particular, we report for the first time that the coupled system exhibits nonblinking photoluminescence with blinking lifetime, which shows that the elimination of photoluminescence blinking originates from enhanced quantum yield of the charged states. We identify that the radiative decay rate is boosted from (48 ns)-1 to (0.7 ns)-1, which outcompetes Auger processes and enables similar quantum yields for charged and neutral excitons. Moreover, we demonstrate ultrabright photoluminescence of up to 17 million detected photons per second from a single QD. This work sheds new light on the goal of achieving ultrabright nonblinking QDs and may benefit a variety of QD-based applications.

Abstract:Blinking and time correlation between fluorescences of neighboring negatively charged CdSe/CdS and CdSe/ZnS colloidal quantum dots have been studied experimentally. A tendency of synchronous blinking, that is, a bunching effect, is clearly observed from two neighboring QDs with a spatial separation up to 1.1 mu m. We believe that our observations will help to better understand the mechanisms for the blinking.

Abstract:Nonblinking colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are significant to their applications as single-photon sources or light-emitting materials. Herein, a simple heat-up method was developed to synthesize high-qualityWZ-CdSe/CdS core-shell colloidal QDs, which achieved a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). It was found that the blinking behavior of such QDs was completely suppressed at high excitation intensities, and ultra-stable PL emission was observed. For this reason, a systematic investigation was conducted, revealing that the complete blinking suppression was attributed mainly to the efficient multiexciton emission at high excitation intensities. Such high-quality QDs with nonblinking behaviors and nearly ideal PL properties at high excitation intensities have massive potential applications in various robust conditions, including QD display screens, single-particle tracks, and single-photon sources.

Abstract:A seed‐mediated heat‐up approach is developed for scalable production of high‐quality CdSe/CdS and CdSe/ZnCdS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with continuously tunable shell thickness. With the increasing shell thickness, the as‐obtained core/shell QDs show a narrow photoluminescence (PL) emission peak, near‐unity PL quantum yield, and obviously suppressed blinking behavior, which enables them to work as good emission layers in quantum dot light‐emitting diodes. A facile and reproducible method for scalable synthesis of high‐quality core/shell quantum dots (QDs) is a prerequisite to facilitate their versatile applications. Herein, a seed‐mediated heat‐up approach is developed for the preparation of high‐quality core/shell QDs with variable shell composition and continuously tunable shell thickness by selection of conventional salts as the precursors. The method is very simple and highly reproducible and, therefore, can be easily scaled up to get gram‐level product. The as‐obtained CdSe/CdS and CdSe/ZnCdS core/shell QDs exhibit intriguing optical properties, that is a narrow photoluminescence (PL) emission peak and near‐unity PL quantum yield. Importantly, the CdSe/ZnCdS core/shell QDs with a size of 11.4 nm exhibit obviously suppressed blinking behavior, and the fraction of nonblinking QDs (defined by an on‐time fraction ≥ 0.95) can reach as high as 96.0% on the measurement of more than 200 QDs. Moreover, quantum‐dot light‐emitting diodes (QLEDs) based on CdSe/ZnCdS core/shell QDs show a peak external quantum efficiency of 14.8% and low efficiency roll‐off at luminance ranging from 1000 to 25 000 cd·m−2. It is anticipated that the presented work will pave a novel way for the large‐scale production of high‐quality QDs and further boost their applications in light‐emitting diodes, lasing, and biological imaging.

Abstract:Understanding photoluminescence (PL) intermittency of single quantum dots (QDs) (intensity blinking by randomly switching between distinguishable brightness states under continuous excitation) has been a longstanding fundamental challenge and potential roadblock for their applications. Here we introduce a new analysis method for single-molecule spectroscopy that treats the blinking as photochemical/chemical processes (switching between neutral/ bright and charged/dim states). It uncovers the channels for charging (bright to dim) and discharging (dim to bright) involved in PL blinking of single CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs. Both charging and discharging of the single CdSe/CdS core/shell QD possess a photochemical channel (-1075 to 10(-6) events/photon) that linearly depends on excitation in both single- and multi-exciton regime. These two linear channels coupled to a spontaneous discharging channel (similar to 2 events/s) to dictate the QDs from nonblinking to gradually blinking under increasing excitation. For high-quality CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs, Auger ionization of multiexciton for both charging and discharging is negligible.

Abstract:Seeded semiconductor nanorods represent a unique family of quantum confined materials that manifest characteristics of mixed dimensionality. They show polarized emission with high quantum yield and fluorescence switching under an electric field, features that are desirable for use in display technologies and other optical applications. So far, their robust synthesis has been limited mainly to CdSe/CdS heterostructures, thereby constraining the spectral tunability to the red region of the visible spectrum. Herein we present a novel synthesis of CdSe/Cd<sub>1-x</sub>Zn<sub>x</sub>S seeded nanorods with a radially graded composition that show bright and highly polarized green emission with minimal intermittency, as confirmed by ensemble and single nanorods optical measurements. Atomistic pseudopotential simulations elucidate the importance of the Zn atoms within the nanorod structure, in particular the effect of the graded composition. Thus, the controlled addition of Zn influences and improves the nanorods' optoelectronic performance by providing an additional handle to manipulate the degree confinement beyond the common size control approach. These nanorods may be utilized in applications that require the generation of a full, rich spectrum such as energy-efficient displays and lighting.

Abstract:The further practical applications of halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are blocked by problems of instability and nonradiative Auger recombination manifested as photoluminescence blinking. Here, single core/shell structured perovskite semiconductor QDs are successfully fabricated by capping CsPbBr3 QD core with CdS shell. It is demonstrated that CsPbBr3/CdS core/shell QDs exhibit ultrahigh chemical stability and nonblinking photoluminescence with high quantum yield due to the reduced electronic traps within the core/shell structure. Efficiency of amplified spontaneous emission exhibits obvious enhancement compared to that of pure CsPbBr3 QDs, originating from the mitigated competition between stimulated emission and suppressed nonradiative biexciton Auger recombination. Furthermore, low-threshold whispering-gallery-mode lasing with a high-quality factor is achieved by incorporating CsPbBr3/CdS QDs into microtubule resonators. Density functional theory (DFT)-based first-principles calculations are also performed to reveal the atomic interface structure, which supports the existence of CsPbBr3/CdS structure. An interesting feature of spatially separated charge density at CsPbBr3/CdS interface is found, which may greatly contribute to the suppressed Auger recombination. The results provide a practical approach to improve the stability and suppress the blinking of halide perovskite QDs, which may pave the way for future applications for various optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:In this Letter, we reported the unusual non-blinking characteristics of the fluorescence from individual CdZnSe/ZnSe alloyed quantum dots. Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are promising candidates for quantum light sources, yet their application has been impeded by photoluminescence instability due to blinking and spectral diffusion. This study introduces a new category of cube-shaped CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals with exceptionally stable photoluminescence characteristics. Under continuous excitation, the emissive quantum state remained consistent without alterations of the charge state for 4000 s, and the average photon energy variation stayed within the bounds of spectral resolution throughout this extended duration. Systematic examination of single-nanocrystal photoluminescence, upon variation of the core and shell dimensions, revealed that a thicker CdS shell and increased core edge length significantly curtail spectral diffusion, considering that the nanocrystals possess well-controlled CdSe-CdS and facet-ligand interfaces. This study advances the optimization of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals as high-performance quantum light sources.

Abstract:Photoluminescence (PL) blinking of single colloidal quantum dot (QD)-PL intensity switching between different brightness states under constant excitation-and photo-bleaching are roadblocks for most applications of QDs. This progress report shall treat PL blinking and photo-bleaching both as photochemical events, namely, PL blinking as reversible and photo-bleaching being irreversible ones. Most studies on single-molecule spectroscopy of QDs in literature are related to PL blinking, which invites us to concentrate our discussions on the PL blinking, including its brief history in 20 years, analysis methods, competitive mechanisms and different strategies to battle it. In terms of suppression of the PL blinking, wavefunction confinement-confining photo-generated electron and hole within the core and inner portion of the shell of a core/shell QD-demonstrates significant advantages. This strategy yields nearly non-blinking QDs with their emission peaks covering most part of the visible window. As expected, the resulting QDs from this new strategy also show substantially improved anti-bleaching features.

Abstract:Metal–halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have gained significant attention in the field of optoelectronic and photonic devices due to their promising applications. Despite their exceptional optical properties, the impact of different synthetic strategies on the fundamental nature of NCs, such as nonradiative recombination centers, remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the photophysical properties of CsPbBr 3 NCs synthesized using two distinct methods, hot injection and ligand-assisted reprecipitation, at the individual particle level. We observed different blinking behaviors under specific photoexcitation power densities and proposed, through intensity–lifetime analysis and Monte–Carlo simulations, that these different synthetic strategies can fabricate NCs with similar crystal structures but distinct surface quenchers with varying energy levels, which significantly affected the photo-induced blinking-down and blinking-up behaviors in individual NCs. Our findings indicate a practical and feasible approach for controlling defect engineering in perovskite NCs, with significant implications for their use in optoelectronic and other technological applications.

In this study, we investigated the photophysical properties of CsPbBr 3 NCs synthesized using two distinct methods, hot injection and ligand-assisted reprecipitation, at the individual particle level. We observed different blinking behaviors under specific photoexcitation power densities and proposed, through intensity–lifetime analysis and Monte–Carlo simulations, that these different synthetic strategies can fabricate NCs with similar crystal structures but distinct surface quenchers with varying energy levels, which significantly affected the photo-induced blinking-down and blinking-up behaviors in individual NCs. Our findings indicate a practical and feasible approach for controlling defect engineering in perovskite NCs, with significant implications for their use in optoelectronic and other technological applications.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of the inner shell on the fluorescence blinking and exciton dynamics is essential to promote the optical performances of InP-based quantum dots (QDs). Here, the fluorescence blinking, exciton dynamics, second-order correlation function g2(τ), and ultrafast carrier dynamics of InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs regulated by inner ZnSe shell thickness varying from 2 to 7 monolayers (MLs) are systematically investigated. With an inner ZnSe shell thickness of 5 MLs, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) can reach 98% due to the suppressed blinking and increased probability of multiphoton emission. The exciton dynamics of InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs with different inner shell indicates that two decay components of neural exciton and charged trion are competitive to affect the photon emission behavior. The probability density distributions of the ON and OFF state duration in the blinking traces demonstrate an effective manipulation of the inner ZnSe shell in the non-radiative processes via defect passivation. Accordingly, the radiative recombination dominates the exciton deactivation and the non-radiative Auger recombination rate is remarkably reduced, leading to a QY close to unity and a high PL stability for the InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs with 5 MLs of ZnSe shell. These results provide insights into the photophysical mechanism of InP-based QDs and are significant for developing novel semiconductor PL core/shell QDs.
