Abstract:Introduction: Calcium silicate-based cements (CSC), are self-setting hydraulic biomaterials widely used for reparative procedures in dentistry and endodontics. These materials possess physical properties, such as ion release, porosity, solubility, and radiopacity. Their biological properties are connected to their alkalizing activity and calcium release capacity. Materials and Methods: Six calcium silicate-based materials were selected for this study: TheraCal LC (Bisco Inc., Schaumburg, IL, USA), MTA Plus (PrevestDenpro, Jammu, India Avalon Biomed Inc., Bradenton, FL, USA), Biodentine (Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France), RetroMTA (BioMTA, Seoul, Korea), MTA Flow (Ultradent Products, Inc., South Jordan, UT, USA), and OrthoMTA (BioMTA, Seoul, Korea). The pH was analyzed immediately after immersion (baseline) and after 1 h, 3 h, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 1 year with a pH meter, previously calibrated with solutions of known pH. All testing materials had alkaline pH. Results: Analysis of the tested materials showed statistically significant differences in terms of pH changes as a function of the time showed a gradual rise in the pH of all materials. Conclusions: All tested materials exhibited continuous hydroxyl ion release resulting in a rise in pH until the end of time of experience.

In Vitro Analysis of Microbiologic Sealing of Two Different Fixed Implant-Supported Prosthesis Designs Cemented By Four Different Dental Cements

Abstract:Purpose: Despite the high success rate of implant-supported fixed restorations in dentistry, there is a lack of evidence on the marginal seal for dental cement. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the marginal seal of implant-supported crowns and partial dentures cemented using four different dental cements. Materials and methods: The study evaluated the marginal seal of implant-supported crowns and partial dentures cemented using zinc phosphate, resin-modified glass-ionomer, self-adhesive resin, and noneugenol, acrylic-urethane polymer-based temporary dental cements. After cementation and thermal cycling procedures, the samples were incubated in Escherichia coli suspension for 5 days at 37°C under an aerobic environment. After debonding the restorations under sterile conditions, sterile cotton swabs were used to obtain microbial samples from the inner surface of each restoration and abutment surface. To analyze the contamination, each sample was immersed in a brain-heart infusion culture medium and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours, and then, the colony-forming units were counted and recorded. Results: Regarding the number of colonies for Escherichia coli, the results revealed no substantial difference between the crowns and the fixed partial restorations (P = .25). However, the differences in the level of contamination between the cement groups were significant (P ≤ .001). The self-adhesive resin cement samples showed the lowest level of contamination, followed by the zinc phosphate and resin-modified glass-ionomer cements. The difference in the level of contamination between these groups was not significant. The temporary cement group exhibited significantly higher numbers of bacterial colonies in comparison to the other cement groups. Conclusion: Self-adhesive resin cement has better biologic properties for retaining implant-supported restorations than other types of dental cement.
In vitro comparative evaluation of apical leakage using a bioceramic sealer with three different obturating techniques: A glucose leakage model

Abstract:Context: Bioceramic sealers have improved sealing ability by forming an interfacial apatite layer that chemically bonds the sealer and radicular dentin thus decrease apical leakage. Aim: This study aims to evaluate and compare the apical leakage of Cerafill RCS bioceramic sealer and gutta percha when used with three different obturating techniques. Materials and methods: Thirty-four extracted single-rooted premolars were decoronated and prepared up to size F3. Then, the specimens were randomly divided into 3 experimental groups (n = 10) cold lateral obturation technique, warm vertical obturation technique, single-cone obturation technique, positive and negative control groups (n = 2), according to the obturation technique used along with a bioceramic sealer. To evaluate apical leakage, all specimens were mounted in a glucose leakage model and assessed at 7 and 14 days using an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis: The results were subjected to ANOVA/Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA; followed by post hoc analysis using Bonferroni correction. Results: Significant differences were found in the cumulative leakage of all the three experimental groups. Significantly higher leakage was found in groups obturated using single-cone obturation technique as compared to warm vertical compaction technique at both 7 and 14 days. Conclusions: Warm vertical compaction showed a better sealing result than single-cone obturation techniques at all observation periods.
Evaluation of sealing ability of four bioceramic root canal sealers and an epoxy resin-based sealer: An in vivo study

Abstract:Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the bacterial leakage of four different bioceramic root canal sealers and to compare it to the conventional epoxy resin-based sealer. Materials and Methods: The study sample consisted of 94 single-rooted human teeth with one round root canal, which were instrumented and randomly distributed into five experimental groups according to the root canal sealer: Group 1: TotalFill bioceramic sealer; Group 2: BioRoot root canal sealer; Group 3: mineral trioxide Aggregate (MTA) Fillapex; Group 4: MTA Plus; Group 5: epoxy resin-based sealer AH Plus and positive and negative control group. The prepared samples were fixed in a model designed for the Enterococcus faecalis leakage evaluation and were sterilized in plasma. The bacterial penetration through the filled root canals was checked by the color change in the lower tube during 60 days. The scanning electron microscopy was used to check the bond between the sealer and the dentine wall. Data were statistically analyzed. Results: Total Fill bioceramic sealer (BCS) group presented significantly lower number of samples that leaked (14.2%) compared to the AH Plus group (78.6%) ( P = 0.002) and MTA Plus group (50%) ( P = 0.046). There was no statistically significant difference between other groups ( P > 0.05). Conclusion: The TotalFill BCS root canal sealer provided better sealing ability compared to the AH Plus and the MTA Plus sealers.

Abstract:Introduction A number of sealers with different chemistries are badged as Bioceramic, implying biological activity, but have dissimilar properties, which has implications on the sealer properties and will affect the quality and outcome of root canal treatment. This study aimed to assess the physical and chemical properties of 3 hydraulic cement–based sealers, namely BC Universal sealer compared with Totalfill BC sealer and AH Plus Bioceramic. Methods The microstructure and composition of the sealers were assessed using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy after setting. The crystalline phases were assessed by X-ray diffraction analysis and the leachates were tested using inductively coupled plasma. All testing was performed at 0, 7, and 28 days. The physical properties of film thickness, flow, radiopacity, and solubility were evaluated using ISO 6876:2012 standards. Results All 3 sealers contained calcium, zirconium, and silicon. Totalfill BC had the highest calcium release at 7 and 28 days followed by AH Plus Bioceramic and BC Universal sealer. All 3 sealers adhered to the ISO standard in terms of flow and radiopacity. BC Universal sealer was slightly over the range (>50 μm) for film thickness. All sealers exceeded the solubility range set by ISO 6876:2012. Conclusion Although these hydraulic cement sealers had similar components and delivery, the properties varied significantly. The testing of material properties to confirm the suitability for clinical use is necessary.

Abstract:Assessment of the micro tensile bond strength ( μ TBS) and microleakage of contemporary restorative materials (Cention N cement (CN), Bulk-fill Resin-based composite (BF-RBC), and Zirconomer Improved) bonded to carious affected dentin (CAD) of primary molars as compared to conventional control Glass ionomer cement (GIC). Eighty human primary molars having scores 4 and 5 of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) were included. Specimens were randomly allocated into four groups ( n = 20) Group I = GIC, Group 2: Zirconomer Improved, Group 3: CN, and Group 4: BF-RBC. All the samples were thermocycled followed by marginal leakage, μ TBS, and failure mode assessment using a dye penetration test, universal testing machine, and a stereomicroscope. The μ TBS and microleakage results were examined using (ANOVA) and Tukey post hoc tests. Samples from Group 1 (GIC) revealed the highest value of marginal leakage (30.55±10.31 nm) and the lowest recorded value of μ TBS (12.28±0.32 MPa). In contrast, the specimens from Group 3 (CN) demonstrated the lowest levels of microleakage (14.89±4.33 nm) and highest bond integrity (18.12±0.79 MPa). Cention N cement and Bulk-fill composite have shown to be reliable options as a restorative material in primary dentition due to their superior tensile bond strength and reduced marginal leakage scores when applied to caries-affected dentin.

Abstract:Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) patients. In this clinical setting, the risk of protein-energy wasting is high because of the metabolic derangements of the uremic syndrome, the difficulties in nutrient needs estimation, and the possible negative effects of renal replacement therapy itself on nutrient balance. No specific guidelines on nutritional support in PICU patients with AKI are currently available. The present review is aimed at evaluating the role of AKI as a risk condition for inadequate protein/energy intake in these patients, on the basis of literature data on quantitative aspects of nutritional support in PICU. Current evidence suggests that a relevant protein/energy debt, a widely accepted concept in the literature on adult intensive care unit patients with its negative implications for patients' major outcomes, is also likely to develop in pediatric critically ill patients, and that AKI represents a key factor for its development.
Evaluation of the root dentin bond strength and intratubular biomineralization of a premixed calcium aluminate-based hydraulic bioceramic endodontic sealer

Abstract:PURPOSE: This study evaluated the dentin bonding strength and biomineralization effect of a recently developed premixed calcium aluminate-based endodontic sealer (Dia-Root Bio Sealer) in comparison with existing calcium silicate-based sealers.METHODS: The root canals of 80 mandibular premolars were filled with Dia-Root Bio Sealer, Endoseal MTA, EndoSequence BC Sealer, and AH Plus Bioceramic Sealer. Medial and apical specimens were then obtained by sectioning. The push-out bond strength was measured using the medial specimens, and the failure mode was recorded. Intratubular biomineralization in the apical specimens was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance followed by the Tukey test (P < 0.05).RESULTS: The push-out bond strength of Dia-Root Bio Sealer was significantly higher than that of the other tested materials, and a cohesive failure pattern was observed in all groups. Dia-Root Bio Sealer also exhibited a significantly higher degree of biomineralization than the other groups, and EDS analysis indicated that the biomineralized precipitates were amorphous calcium phosphate.CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that Dia-Root Bio Sealer has the potential to be used as an adequate root canal sealer due to its favorable bonding performance.

Comparative Cytocompatibility and Mineralization Potential of Bio-C Sealer and TotalFill BC Sealer

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the cytocompatibility and mineralization potential of two premixed hydraulic endodontic sealers compared with an epoxy resin-based root canal sealer. The cellular responses and mineralization capacity were studied in human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) that were exposed to premixed hydraulic sealers, Bio-C Sealer (Angelus, Londrína, PR, Brazil), TotalFill BC Sealer (FKG Dentaire SA, La-Chaux-de-fonds, Switzerland) and an epoxy resin-based material, AH Plus (Dentsply De Trey, Konstanz, Germany). Non-exposed cultures served as the control. The endodontic sealers were assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX). Statistical analyses were done using Analisis of Variance (ANOVA), with Bonferroni adjusted pairwise comparison (p = 0.05). AH Plus reduced cell viability and cell migration, whereas increased cell viability and cell migration were observed in the Bio-C Sealer and the TotalFill BC Sealer (p < 0.05). The lowest cell attachment and spreading were observed for all concentrations of AH Plus, whereas the highest were observed for TotalFill BC Sealer. At the end of 21 days, only the Bio-C Sealer and the TotalFill BC Sealer supported matrix mineralization (p < 0.05). Additionally, SEM-EDX revealed high content of calcium, oxygen, and silicon in the Bio-C Sealer and the TotalFill BC Sealer. Based on the results from this study, Bio-C Sealer and TotalFill BC Sealer demonstrated better cytocompatibility in terms of cell viability, migration, cell morphology, cell attachment, and mineralization capacity than AH Plus.

Abstract:Aim: To compare the sealing ability of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and Biodentine as root-end filling materials by assessing the degree of microleakage through confocal laser scanning microscopy. Materials and Methods: Thirty extracted maxillary incisors were root canal treated using the rotary ProTaper system. Apical root resections followed by retrograde cavity preparation were done. The teeth were divided into three groups and filled with the 3 tested materials (PMMA bone cement, MTA, and Biodentine). Samples were coated with nail varnish, immersed in 0.5% aqueous solution of rhodamine B dye for 24 h, and rinsed with water to remove excess dye. Samples were horizontally sectioned at 1 mm intervals into three using a diamond disk and were labeled A, B, and C and considered first, second, and third, respectively, based on their distance from the apex. Each slice was divided into four equal parts and evaluated using a confocal laser scanning microscope. Dye penetration was scored based on the amount of microleakage. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance. Results: Intergroup comparison of the mean scores of dye penetration among the three materials showed that there is a statistical difference between PMMA bone cement, MTA, and Biodentine, in sections B and C ( P ≤ 0.05). The three groups showed no statistical difference in dye penetration scores in section A. Conclusion: The microleakage is least with PMMA bone cement followed by Biodentine and MTA. Microleakage was least in section C followed by sections B and A.
Mechanical Properties of Dual-Cured Resin Luting Agents for Ceramic Restoration.

Abstract:PURPOSE:The aim of the present study was to evaluate mechanical properties, including surface hardness, flexural strength, and flexural modulus, of two dual-cured resin luting agents [Clearfil Esthetic Cement (CEC) and Variolink II (VLII)] irradiated through four thicknesses of leucite ceramics (0, 1, 2, and 3 mm) and to evaluate their shear bond strength to zirconia ceramic (Cercon) using each ceramic primer.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Knoop hardness was measured on a thin layer of resin luting agent on the ceramic surface. Three-point bending tests were performed after 24 hours of storage at 37 degrees C. Two differently shaped zirconia ceramic specimens with or without sandblasting with alumina were treated with each primer. The specimens were then cemented together with each resin luting agent. Half of the specimens were stored in water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours and the other half were thermocycled 5000 times.RESULTS:VLII revealed statistically higher Knoop hardness and flexural modulus than CEC for each thickness of ceramic. No significant differences in flexural strength were observed between VLII and CEC for each ceramic spacer. Reduction of the mechanical properties with increase of ceramic thickness varied for each property; however, these properties were similar in the two materials. Blasting with alumina was significantly effective for increasing shear bond strength of both resin luting agents before and after thermal cycling. The use of Clearfil Ceramic Primer showed the highest shear bond strength and maintained bond durability after 5000 thermocycles.CONCLUSION:Mechanical properties of CEC dual-cured resin luting agent appear adequate for ceramic restorations.
A Study on Nanoleakage of Apical Retrograde Filling of Premixed Calcium Silicate-Based Cement Using a Lid Technique

Abstract:This study aimed to compare the nanoleakage of retrograde fillings with premixed calcium silicate-based putty and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), using two different techniques (traditional and Lid). Sixty-four extracted human teeth were decoronated, then root canals and ends were instrumented for retrograde filling and divided into four groups according to the retrograde filling technique: the traditional and the Lid technique. Each group (n = 15) was filled with Ceraseal + Well-Root putty, Well-Root putty, Ceraseal + ProRoot MTA, and ProRoot MTA. The nanoleakage was evaluated using the Nanoflow device (IB Systems) on days 1, 3, 7, 15 and 30. Data were collected twice per second at the nanoscale (nL/s) and calculated after archiving the stabilization of fluid flow. The Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U-tests were used for statistical analysis. All groups showed enhanced sealing ability over time. Regardless of filling materials, the Well-Root putty, Ceraseal+Well-Root putty, and Ceraseal+ProRoot MTA groups indicated less nanoleakage than the ProRoot MTA group in the first week of evaluation (p < 0.05). Although all groups did not show significant differences after 2 weeks, the Ceraseal+ProRoot MTA group leaked less than ProRoot MTA on Days 3 and 7 (p < 0.05). The scanning electron microscopic examined good adaptation to the cavity wall, which was similar to nanoleakage results. Premixed calcium silicate-based putty retrograde filling material alone and using the "lid technique" were shown to be faster and less prone to nanoleakage when compared to MTA.

Compartive study of microleakage by using four types of luting agents in glass-infiltrated alumina core ceramic

Abstract:Objective To observe and compare the microleakage of glass-infiltrated alumina core ceramic using four types of luting agents.Methods Forty healthy non-carious human molars were selected and randomly assigned to 4groups,10 in each.The glass ionomer,resin-modified glass ionomer,adhesive resin and RelyX Unicem were used for bonding.All specimens were stored in water at 37℃ for 24 hours,then the specimens were subjected to thermocycling 500 times ranging from 5℃to 55℃.Ten specimens in each group were evaluated by dye penetration.The microleakage was examined with light microscope.Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 10.0 software package.Results The same kind of glass-infiltrated alumina core ceramic treated with different luting agents demonstrated significantly different degree of microleakage(P<0.05).Conclusions RelyX Unicem and RelyX ARC were the superior anti-microleakage luting cement,and it is the ideal material for the glass-infiltrated alumina core ceramic.
Comparison of the Apical Sealing Ability of Calcium Silicate-Based Sealer and Resin-Based Sealer Using the Fluid-Filtration Technique

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate the apical sealing ability of tricalcium silicate-based (MTA Fillapex®) and resin-based (AH Plus®) sealers at 24 h, 7 days and 4 weeks.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four extracted human upper anterior teeth were used. All the teeth were sectioned to leave the root 15 mm long, and then all the roots were instrumented using a set of ProTaper® rotary instruments. Four roots were selected randomly as controls, and the remaining 30 were randomly divided into 2 groups of 15 each: MTA Fillapex and gutta-percha (group 1) and AH Plus and gutta-percha (group 2) using a warm vertical compaction technique. The apical sealing ability of the filled root canal was measured using the fluid-filtration method with 200 mm Hg (26.67 KPa) above atmospheric pressure at 24 h, 7 days and 4 weeks. The apical microleakage of the 2 groups was compared using Student's t test. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS: The mean apical microleakage in group 1 at 24 h, 7 days and 4 weeks was 1.01 ± 0.24, 0.43 ± 0.07 and 0.24 ± 0.08 nl/s. The corresponding values in group 2 were 1.15 ± 0.40, 0.32 ± 0.09, and 0.38 ± 0.10 nl/s. MTA Fillapex had significantly more leakage than AH Plus at 7 days, but at 4 weeks, MTA Fillapex showed a significantly better sealing ability than AH Plus (p < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the tricalcium silicate-based sealer promoted proper sealing when used for filling the root canals.

Physicochemical Properties of Epoxy Resin-Based and Bioceramic-Based Root Canal Sealers

Abstract:Three bioceramic sealers (EndoSequence BC sealer, EndoSeal MTA, and MTA Fillapex) and three epoxy resin-based sealers (AH-Plus, AD Seal, and Radic-Sealer) were tested to evaluate the physicochemical properties: flow, final setting time, radiopacity, dimensional stability, and pH change. The one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test were used to analyze the data ( P = 0 . 05 ). The MTA Fillapex sealer had a highest flow and the BC Sealer presented a flow significantly lower than the others ( P < 0.05 ). The BC Sealer and MTA Fillapex samples were not set in humid incubator condition even after one month. EndoSeal MTA had the longest setting time among the measurable materials and Radic-Sealer and AD Seal showed shorter setting time than the AH-Plus ( P < 0.05 ). AH-Plus and EndoSeal MTA showed statistically higher values and MTA Fillapex showed statistically lower radiopacity ( P < 0.05 ). BC Sealer showed the highest alkaline pH in all evaluation periods. Set samples of 3 epoxy resin-based sealers and EndoSeal MTA presented a significant increase of pH over experimental time for 4 weeks. In conclusion, the bioceramic sealer and epoxy resin-based sealers showed clinical acceptable physicochemical properties, but BC Sealer and MTA Fillapex were not set completely.

Outcome of Root Canal Treatments Using a New Calcium Silicate Root Canal Sealer: A Non-Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to compare the success rate of root canal treatments undertaken using a calcium silicate root canal sealer in combination with a single cone with non-calcium silicate cement and warm vertical condensation. Methods: 150 necrotic or pulpitic teeth were treated. (REC: 08/H0804/79). Following standardized root canal chemo-debridement. The canals were obturated using warm vertical condensation of gutta-percha and epoxy-based sealer (AH plus) or a calcium silicate sealer (BioRootTM RCS) with a single cone technique. Follow-up assessment was conducted at 12 months using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Results: At 1-year recall, 104 teeth were assessed (51 AH plus, 53 BioRootTM RCS). The success rate using loose criteria for the CBCT images and PA radiographs was respectively 80% and 89% in the AH plus/warm vertical condensation group, 84% and 90% in the BioRootTM RCS/single cone group. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (Fisher exact test p value 0.6099 for the CBCT images). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this non-randomized trial, a calcium silicate cement in combination with single cone resulted in a similar proportion of successful cases compared to warm vertical condensation and epoxy-based sealer.

Abstract:ObjectiveCompositional modifications may alter the biological and physicochemical characteristics of calcium silicate-based sealers (CSBS) and, ultimately, their bioactivity. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the biological properties of three CSBS: EndoSequence BC Sealer, Ceraseal, and Endoseal mineral trioxide aggregate.Materials and methodsHuman periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) were exposed to several eluates of CSBS. The ion release profile and pH were determined, and metabolic activity and cell migration were assessed using the MTT and wound healing assays. hPDLSCs were cultured in direct contact with the surface of each material, and cell morphology and attachment were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Bioactivity potential was assessed by RT-qPCR and mineralization assays. Statistical differences between biomaterials were assessed using one- or two-way ANOVA (α < 0.05).ResultsAll materials showed an alkaline pH, although Endoseal exhibited a significantly higher pH compared with the other CSBS (p < 0.05). Ceraseal released significantly more Ca2+ (p < 0.05) than EndoSequence BC Sealer and Endoseal. Interestingly, Endoseal induced a significant reduction in cell viability and cell migration compared with the control (p < 0.001). Moreover, SEM showed abundant cells adhering to EndoSequence BC Sealer and Ceraseal surfaces, whereas very few round cells were detected on the surface of Endoseal. Finally, Ceraseal and EndoSequence induced ALP, CAP, and CEMP-1 expression and a significantly higher mineralization capacity than Endoseal (***p < 0.001).ConclusionsThe eluates from EndoSequence BC Sealer and Ceraseal displayed higher cell viability, cell attachment, cell migration rates, and ion release rates than Endoseal. Ceraseal and EndoSequence BC Sealer exhibited significantly more gene expression and mineralization capacity than Endoseal.Clinical relevanceThe results obtained in the present work suggest that EndoSequence BC Sealer and Ceraseal possess biological properties that make them suitable materials for root canal treatment.

Influence of luting agent on the microleakage of all-ceramic crowns

Abstract:Purpose: In this in-vitro study, microleakage of all-ceramic crowns was evaluated at enamel and dentin margins. Materials and methods: Forty maxillary central incisors were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 10). While buccal and palatal margins were placed on enamel, mesial and distal margins were placed below the cementoenamel junction. In groups 1 to 3, IPS Empress 2 crowns were luted with Variolink 2/Syntac Classic (group 1), Bifix DC/Solobond Plus (group 2) and Calibra/Prime & Bond NT combinations (group 3), respectively. In the control group (group 4), porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns were luted with a zinc-phosphate cement. All specimens were subjected to 5000 thermocycles (at 5 degrees C to 55 degrees C; 30-s dwell time). After immersion in India ink for 48 h at 37 degrees C, the specimens were sectioned both buccolingually and mesiodistally. Each section was evaluated for microleakage under a stereomicroscope at 24X magnification. Results: According to the Krukal-Wallis test, in all groups, there were significant differences in microleakage at the enamel margins (p = 0.001). Nevertheless, the margins finished in dentin showed no significant differences (p = 0.163). According to the Mann-Whitney U-test, statistically significant differences were observed in microleakage between groups 1 and 3 (p = 0.049), groups 1 and 4 (p = 0.001), groups 2 and 4 (p = 0.002), and between groups 3 and 4 (p = 0.045) at the enamel margin. In group 1, significantly greater microleakage was observed at the dentin margin compared to the enamel margin (p = 0.007). Conclusion: The adhesive luting technique demonstrated an excellent ability to minimize microleakage of all-ceramic crowns at the enamel margins. Water-based dentin bonding systems showed less microleakage than the water-free acetone-based dentin bonding system at the enamel margin.
Assessment of pH Value and Release of Calcium Ions in Calcium Silicate Cements: An In Vitro Comparative Study

Abstract:The goal of this study was to evaluate the pH and the release of calcium from four calcium-silicate-based cements. Methods: Four materials were tested (ProClinic MTA; Angelus MTA; ProRoot MTA; Biodentine). The palatal canal root of acrylic upper molars was filled with each cement. Afterwards, they were set in phosphate-buffered saline. Measurements were taken by atomic adsorption spectroscopy (AAS) at 3, 24, 72, 168, 336, 672, and 1008 h. The pH was measured at the same timepoints. Kruskal–Wallis tests were carried out in each period, as the Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Shapiro–Wilk tests showed no parametric results. Results: Significant differences (p < 0.05) in calcium release were found at the 3-, 24-, and 72-hour evaluations. All of the analyzed groups presented a release of calcium ions up to 168 h, and the general tendency was to increase up to 672 h, with a maximum release of 25.45 mg/g in the ProRoot group. We could only observe significant differences (p < 0.05) in pH value over 168 h between the Biodentine (7.93) and Angelus MTA (7.31) groups. Conclusions: There were significant differences (p 0.05) in the pH values were found at the studied timepoints, except for the values at 168 h.

Abstract:Statement of problem. Self-adhesive resin cement with the characteristics of glass ionomer cement is more susceptible to water than conventional resin cements. It is unknown if there is a higher risk of bond degradation at the interface with silanized ceramic in an oral environment. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond degradation behavior of self-adhesive cement under simulated oral conditions, by comparing it with the behavior of 3 conventional resin cements. Material and methods. Three conventional resin cements, Linkamx HV (LMHV), Clearfil Esthetic Cement (CEC), and SuperBond (SB), were bonded to silanized ceramic (ProCAD) with the manufacturer's recommended silane coupler (GC Ceramic Primer (GCCP), Clearfil Ceramic Primer (CCP), and Porcelain Liner M (PLM), respectively), while a self-adhesive cement (G-CEM) was bonded with each of the 3 silane couplers. Maximum water sorption and solubility of the resin cements were measured according to the ISO 4049 standard during 6 weeks of water storage. The microshear bond strength of each silane/cement group (n=10 per thermal cycling subgroup) was tested after 0, 10,000, and 30,000 thermal cycles (TC), and bond failure types were counted. One- and two-way ANOVAs and the Tukey multiple comparisons test (alpha=.05) were used to evaluate the bond strength data. Results. G-CEM had significantly higher water sorption (P<.001) and solubility than conventional resin cements. Statistical analysis showed that the bond strength of all silane/cement groups was reduced significantly by thermal cycling (P=.01 for CCP/G-CEM, P=.003 for GCCP/LMHV, P<.001 for other groups). The bond strength of G-CEM with the 3 silane couplers was significantly degraded from TC 0 to 10,000 (P<.001 for GCCP/G-CEM and PLM/G-CEM, P=.01 for CCP/G-CEM); however, the bond strength appeared to stabilize with no significant degradation from TC 10,000 to 30,000. This behavior was different from that of conventional resin cements, which demonstrated bond degradation throughout TC 0-30,000. After TC 30,000, the bond strength of G-CEM did not differ significantly from that of the 3 conventional resin cements. Conclusions. The bond degradation behavior of G-CEM under thermal cycling conditions differs from that of conventional resin cements. (J Prosthet Dent 2011;105:177-184)
