Abstract:Visible near infrared spectroscopy combined with genetic algorithm and successive projection algorithm was investigated to detect soil organic matter (OM). A total of 394 soil samples were collected from Wencheng, Zhejiang province. In order to simplify calibration model, a total of 18 characteristic wavelengths were selected with using genetic algorithm and successive projections algorithm. These characteristic wavelengths were subjected to partial least squares regression (PLSR) with leave-one-out cross validation to establish calibration model of soil organic matter (OM) with coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.81, 0.83, RMSEP of 0.22, 0.20 and residual prediction deviation (RPD) of 2.31, 2.45 for the calibration set and prediction set respectively. The results showed that using genetic algorithm and successive projections algorithm can simplify the model greatly while the assessing indexes of model such as R2, RMSEP and RPD were not reduced greatly compared with indexes of model using full spectra data to develop calibration model. Therefore, genetic algorithm combined with successive projections algorithm can be used to simply the model to predict soil organic matter.
Real-time Analysis of Soil Total N and P with Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy

Abstract:The tide salt clay in Zhejiang Province was selected as research object,and the soil N and soil P were analyzed with NIR spectroscopic techniques.Six group samples were collected from a rice farm.Several kinds of nutritional water with different concentrations were added to the six groups,and then the samples were dried and rubbed.At last,120 samples were got from six groups equably.Standard normal variate(SNV),multivariate scatter correction(MSC) and smoothing of moving average were used to process the spectral data.Different calibration models were established and the performance of these models was compared with different pretreatment methods.After comparison,smoothing of moving average was found to be the best spectral pretreatment method.96 samples were randomly selected from 120 samples as the calibration set,and the other 24 samples were used as the validation samples.Two discriminating analysis models were developed using partial least squares(PLS) method and least squares-support vector machine(LS-SVM) method respectively.The correlation coefficients(r) between the measured data and the predicted data from PLS were 0.945 4(N),0.932 7(P) respectively,and 0.032 1(N),0.954 7(P) from LS-SVM,respectively.The root mean standard error of prediction(RMSEP) were 0.032 1(N),0.008 9(P) from PLS,and 0.037 8(N),0.010 1(P) from LS-SVM.The results showed that NIRS could be used to evaluate the soil N and soil P.
Development and performance test of an in-situ soil total nitrogen-soil moisture detector based on near-infrared spectroscopy

Abstract:In order to accurately acquire soil total nitrogen (STN) content and soil moisture (SM) content, an in-situ STN-SM content detector was developed, and the stability and accuracy of the detector were tested. The in-situ detector consisted of an optical unit, a control unit and a mechanical unit. The optical unit comprised eight single band Near-infrared (NIR) laser sources at 1260, 1330, 1360, 1430, 1530, 1580, 1660 and 1450 nm, collimator and an InGaAs photoelectric sensor, a laser source holder with “Eight faces” umbrella structure and sapphire glass. The control unit was composed of hardware part and software part. The hardware part included I-U conversion circuit, amplifier and filter circuit, and JN5139 module responsible for A/D conversion and data transmission. The software part of the program was written in the JN5139 microcontroller unit. The mechanical unit comprised a cylindrical detection darkroom, an electrical component mounting tray and a cylindrical shading and dust cover. The stability test results showed that the repeatability error at eight sensitive bands were 0.7758%, 0.8091%, 0.7958%, 0.5189%, 0.6405%, 0.8556%, 0.7391% and 0.5294%, respectively. The correlation coefficients between the absorbance of in-situ detector and MATRIX-I Fourier transform near-infrared spectrophotometer were all above 0.88. A portable LED STN content detector was taken as the reference in the performance test. The results showed that the calibration coefficient R c 2 and the validation coefficient R v 2 of in-situ detector model were 0.8322 and 0.7832, respectively. While those of the portable LED STN content detector model were 0.7205 and 0.6851, respectively. Two regression models were established for the SM content by respectively using the portable LED STN content detector and the in-situ detector, and the results showed that both detectors had good detection effects in SM. The experimental results showed that compared with the portable LED STN content detector, in-situ detector greatly improved the STN content detection precision, and could realize STN and SM content field detection in real-time.

A Near-Infrared Spectral Index for Estimating Soil Organic Matter Content

Abstract:Taking the air-dried samples of five soil types from middle and eastern China as test materials, the correlations of their organic matter content with the spectral reflectance of near-infrared (1000-2500 nm), and with the ratio index (RI), difference index (DI), and normalized difference index (ND) of the first derivative values of the reflectance between two bands were studied. Based on this, the key spectral indices and the quantitative models for estimating soil organic matter (SOM) content were developed. After corrected with Multiplicative Scatter Correction (MSC) and Savitzky-Golay (SG) smoothing methods, the spectral reflectance of near-infrared had an obviously high correlation with SOM, compared with the original spectral reflectance, while the corrected spectral indices of the first derivative values of the reflectance between two bands took the intermediate position. The correlation of the spectral indices with SOM was in the order of was DI > RI > ND, regardless the composition of the original spectral reflectance or the first derivative spectra. The DI of the reflectance of near-infrared between 1883 and 2065 nm corrected with MSC and SG smoothing methods [DI(CR1883, CR2065)] had the best linear correlations with SOM. The test of the monitoring model based on DI(CR1883, CR2065) with the independent datasets of SOM showed that the R2 and RMSE validation values were 0.837 and 4.06, respectively. Comparing with the results from the Partial Least Square (PLS) method, the monitoring model based on DI (CR1883, CR2065) was somewhat inferior. However, the DI(CR1883, CR2065) only needed two reflectance bands, and the monitoring model was simpler, being able to provide more available information for developing portable instruments, and a good spectral index for estimating SOM content.

Abstract:Visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) reflectance spectroscopy, which is rapid, cost-effective, in-situ, nondestructive and without hazardous chemicals, is increasingly being used for prediction and digital soil mapping of soil organic matter (SOM). This method is the inevitable demand for precision agriculture and soil remote sensing mapping. In the present study, the Vis-NIR (350-2 500 nm) diffuse reflectance spectral collected by ASD FieldSpec Pro FR spectrometer was truncated by removing the noisy edge values below 400 nm and above 2 450 nm and then was transformed into apparent absorbance spectral using log(1/ R). Based on the relationship analysis between absorbance spectral, spectral indices and SOM, partial least squares regression (PLSR) model was applied to predict SOM, and finally the spatial variability of SOM was characterized by geostatistics method. The results indicated that good model was modeling from the characteristic bands (CB, R2 = 0.91, RPD = 3.28) of correlation coefficient more than 0. 5, the spectral index (SI) of normalized difference index (NDI, R2 0.90, RPD = 3.08), CB integrating SI with which a correlation coefficient was more than 0.5 (R2 = 0.87, RPD = 2.67), and total bands (TA, 400-2 450 nm, R2 = 0.95, RPD = 4.36). While the digital mapping of SOM produced by kriging and cokriging interpolation methods implied a better prediction result, showing similar spatial distribution with the measured SOM, indicating that it is feasible and reliable to use these spectral indices to predict and map the spatial variability.
Laboratory Assessment of Three Quantitative Methods for Estimating the Organic Matter Content of Soils in China Based on Visible/near-Infrared Reflectance Spectra

Abstract:Hyperspectral reflectance data (350nm to 2500nm) were recorded for five different soil types originating from seven eco-climatic zones in middle and eastern China. Three spectral formats were prepared for use in the development of soil organic matter content (SOM) prediction models: (1) original spectral reflectance (OR), (2) first derivative spectra corrected using the Savitzky–Golay (FD-SG) technique and (3) using Norris (FD-NG) smoothing filters. All two-band combinations of the three types of spectra in ratio index (RI), normalized difference index (NDI) and difference index (DI) were used in linear and non-linear regression analyses with SOM content. A new difference index [DI(NDR554, NDR1398)] composed of the first derivative spectra at 554nm and 1398nm with a FD-NG smoothing filter gave the best prediction of SOM in all two-band indices. Partial least square (PLS) models using FD-NG and calibration of the spectral regions 500–900nm and 1350–1460nm resulted in an R2 of 0.91 (n=331), indicating better performance than that obtained using OR and FD-SG and the entire spectral region (400–2500nm) or their sensitive bands. With principal components extracted by PLS serving as inputs for a backpropagation neural network (BPNN), the PLS–BPNN calibration model for estimating SOM resulted in an improved performance (R2=0.98; n=331). The results were tested with independent validation datasets, which indicated that the models were reliable for SOM estimation with predictive accuracy in the following sequence: PLS–BPNN model>PLS>DI(NDR554, NDR1398). Thus, the PLS–BPNN model may serve as a useful tool for estimating SOM content with high prediction accuracy. Since DI(NDR554, NDR1398) needed only two derivative spectral bands, it is also recommended as a good spectral index for reliably estimating SOM. These results are of significant potential valuable in the field of soil ecosystem observation, specifically for sensor selection and future portable sensor design. Although they were shown to be useful in the five different soil types from middle and eastern China, these models and methods should be further tested in soils sampled from other regions and countries to prove their validity and applications.
Research on the Best Measurement Situation Between Optical Probe and Tissue Surfaces in Non-Invasive Detection.

Abstract:Near-infrared spectroscopy is often used for the non-invasive detection of composition in the human body, such as that of blood glucose and haemoglobin, due to its high penetration depth into tissues. Although it is feasible to position the optical probe precisely, contact situation between probe and human tissues is a difficult problem to determine because of physiological tremor and mechanical performance of bio-soft tissue. Here, we proposed a novel estimation method for the situation between the optical probe and tissue surfaces based on the dynamic auto-correlation matrix of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) and radar chart. The diffuse reflectance spectra from the left palm of 4 healthy volunteers were collected while the optical probe gradually approached and pressed bio-tissues with a custom-design controlling device. 2DCOS in the wavelength with lower absorption (1000-1400 nm) was calculated under the perturbation of relative-distance and contact pressure between the optical probe and tissue surface. The synchronous 2DCOS showed that the surface reflection and diffuse reflectance were greatly affected by the contact conditions in 1100 nm, 1220 nm, and 1300 nm. Then the dynamic auto-correlation matrix of 2DCOS was established for the adjacent spectra, and the significant difference wavelengths were used to build radar charts to determine the critical contact situation visually. Results showed that the maximum variations of dynamic auto-correlation matrix appeared at near 1300 nm, and the relative distance between the probe and tissue corresponding to the critical contact state can be easily observed with radar charts with 0.25 mm uncertainty, which was consistent with the self-feeling of each volunteer. So this method can be applied to exactly determine the optimal measurement status for the non-invasive body composition detection in vivo. It is important for the design of human-machine interface and the accuracy improvement of body composition measurements.
Development of an Imaging Spectrometer with a High Signal-to-Noise Ratio Based on High Energy Transmission Efficiency for Soil Organic Matter Detection

Abstract:Hyperspectral detection of the change rate of organic matter content in agricultural remote sensing requires a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, due to the large number and efficiency limitation of the components, it is difficult to improve the SNR. This study uses high-efficiency convex grating with a diffraction efficiency exceeding 50% across the 360-850 nm range, a back-illuminated Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) detector with a 95% efficiency in peak wavelength, and silver-coated mirrors to develop an imaging spectrometer for detecting soil organic matter (SOM). The designed system meets the spectral resolution of 10 nm in the 360-850 nm range and achieves a swath of 100 km and a spatial resolution of 100 m at an orbital height of 648.2 km. This study also uses the basic structure of Offner with fewer components in the design and sets the mirrors of the Offner structure to have the same sphere, which can achieve the rapid adjustment of the co-standard. This study performs a theoretical analysis of the developed Offner imaging spectrometer based on the classical Rowland circular structure, with a 21.8 mm slit length; simulates its capacity for suppressing the +2nd-order diffraction stray light with the filter; and analyzes the imaging quality after meeting the tolerance requirements, which is combined with the surface shape characteristics of the high-efficiency grating. After this test, the grating has a diffraction efficiency above 50%, and the silver-coated mirrors have a reflection value above 95% on average. Finally, the laboratory tests show that the SNR over the waveband exceeds 300 and reaches 800 at 550 nm, which is higher than some current instruments in orbit for soil observation. The proposed imaging spectrometer has a spectral resolution of 10 nm, and its modulation transfer function (MTF) is greater than 0.23 at the Nyquist frequency, making it suitable for remote sensing observation of SOM change rate. The manufacture of such a high-efficiency broadband grating and the development of the proposed instrument with high energy transmission efficiency can provide a feasible technical solution for observing faint targets with a high SNR.
Rapid Detection Method of Soil Organic Matter Contents Using Visible/near Infrared Diffuse Reflectance Spectral

Abstract:The effect of different soil particle sizes on the visible/near infrared spectra to detect soil organic matter contents was analyzed.The visible/near infrared spectra of soil samples with the particle sizes of 0.169-2 mm and 0.169 mm were measured at the range of 325-1 075 nm.Then the principal component analysis-back propagation neural network(PCA-BPNN),least squares-support vector machine(LS-SVM) and partial least squares(PLS) models were established to detect the soil organic matter contents.When the soil particle size range was from 0.169 to 2 mm,the correlation coefficients(r) of prediction of all three models were above 0.84 and root mean square errors of prediction(RMSEP) were below 0.20.When the soil particle size range was smaller than 0.169 mm,the r values of the models were below 0.71 and RMSEPs were above 0.23.When either the soil particle size range was from 0.169 to 2 mm or smaller than 0.169 mm,PLS models obtained better results than LS-SVM and PCA-BPNN models.The overall results show that the difference of soil particle size can significantly affect the prediction results of visible/near infrared spectra to detect the soil organic matter contents.
Detection of soil organic matter from laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and mid-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) coupled with multivariate techniques

Abstract:Spectroscopy is a useful method for soil monitoring because of its environmental friendliness, and its ability to produce rapid, nondestructive, simultaneous multi-element analysis. In this work, data fusion strategies for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform mid-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), as well as a combination of multivariate calibration methods were investigated for prediction of soil organic matter (SOM) content. The root mean square error (RMSE) and residual prediction deviation (RPD) of the calibration and validation sets, systematic error, and residual assessment, were applied to evaluate the robustness and accuracy of these predictions. The results of a principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that baseline wander present in the spectral data could be effectively removed using morphological weighted penalized least squares (MPLS) and wavelet transform (WT) algorithms. The quantitative prediction ability of SOM content by a partial least squares regression (PLSR) model could be improved using principal component weighted mean (PCWM) and Euclidean distance weighted mean (EDWM) algorithms applied to parallel LIBS spectra. The prediction ability of SOM content was dramatically improved using mid-level data fusion based on the concatenation of latent variables of LIBS and FTIR-ATR spectra obtained by partial least squares algorithm. The considerable prediction accuracy and robustness were achieved using the PLSR model (RV2 = 0.792, RMSEV = 1.76 g kg−1, and RPDV = 2.16), the support vector regression (SVR) model (RV2 = 0.811, RMSEV = 1.68 g kg−1, and RPDV = 2.27), and the artificial neural network (ANN) model (RV2 = 0.830, RMSEV = 1.60 g kg−1, and RPDV = 2.39). The findings from this work suggest that the use of LIBS and FTIR-ATR spectra in combination with multivariate calibration can be a simple, fast, and nondestructive approach to monitor SOM. This strategy is potentially of great significance in the evaluation of soil fertility, the management of soil nutrients, and in guiding the agricultural production of precision agriculture.

RAPID DETECTION OF SOIL ORGANIC CARBON USING SHORTWAVE NEAR INFRARED (SW-NIR) SPECTROSCOPY

Abstract:— Soil organic matter content is a primary indicator of quality over measuring soil organic carbon (SOC). Demand has been created for quick and real time multiple analysis methods for SOC instead of available laborious, time consuming and expensive methods. There are developed Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) methodologies for detecting SOC, however imply either expensive full scale NIR instruments or considerable work on sample preparation. There are attempt in narrow range vehicle mounted NIR detections in precision agriculture on the go mode SOC very low accuracy. This study develops a rapid method for the detection of SOC for laboratory scale. Soil samples(n=144) were collected from a range of sites at Mapalana research farm, University of Ruhuna in three different depths including 3 replicates from each depth. Seventy-two air-dried, sieved and finely ground soil samples were prepared in conventional dry sample presentation method. Four spectra per sample were taken by holding them into sample cups. Soil samples, saturated with distilled water were kept for 30min and similar process were followed for new wet sample presentation approach. Direct probe NIR Spectrometer FQA-NIR Gun (588-1100 nm) (Shibuya Seiki, Hamamatsu, Japan), was used to acquire NIR reflectance spectra. Standard Walkey-Black method was used to detect the organic carbon contents of spectra acquired soil samples as the respective reference data to validate the approach. For both wet and dry soil sample types, Partial Least Square (PLS) regression models were developed to predict the SOC. The validation results of both experiments were successful for the prediction of SOC where 0.95 of R 2 and 0.248 of SEV for dry sample test and 0.91 of R 2 and 0.245 of SEV for new wet sample approach. Sample preparation time and procedures were substantially reduced by the newly introduced wet method (30 min) when it is compared to the conventional spectroscopic methods (24 hrs). Average spectra investigation shows that 770 nm was strongly correlated with the SOC which could possibly be employed in further simplified instrumentation. The research revealed that the potential of using NIR technology as a nondestructive and rapid detection method for soil organic carbon with quick multiple field level detection facilities.

A rapid detection method for soil organic matter using a carbon dioxide sensor in situ

Abstract:Precision agriculture requires timely soil organic matter (SOM) detection in order to quickly obtain SOM information before sowing commences. Aiming to improve the slow detection speeds of traditional SOM detection methods, this study proposes a method using a CO 2 sensor to measure CO 2 produced by soil combustion at high temperatures. It then indirectly detects the SOM content by detecting the concentration of emitted CO 2 . A prediction regression of SOM content is obtained using artificially proportioned soil, and the model is tested using four natural soil samples. The determination coefficient of the predicted SOM content by the model is 0.977, with the lowest achieved error rate of 5.65 %, the highest error rate of 18.29 %, and an average error rate of 12.61 %.

Abstract:Rice grain moisture has a great impact on th production and storage storage quality of rice. The main objective of this study was to design and develop a rapid-detection sensor for rice grain moisture based on the Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) characteristic band, aiming to realize its accurate and on-line measurement. In this paper, the NIR spectral information of grain samples with different moisture content was obtained using a portable NIR spectrometer. Then, the partial least squares (PLS) and competitive adaptive reweighted squares (CARS) were applied to model and analyze the spectral data to find the rice grain moisture NIR spectroscopy. As a result, the 1450 nm band was sensitive to the rice grain moisture and a rapid-detection sensor was developed with a 1450 nm light emitting diode (LED) light source, InGaAs photodiode, lens and filter, whose basic principle is to establish the relationship between the rice grain moisture and the measured voltage signal. To evaluate the sensor performance, rice grain samples with 13–30% moisture content were detected, the coefficient of determination R2 was 0.936, and the sum of squares for error (SSE) was 23.44. It is concluded that this study provides a spectroscopic measuring method, as well as developing an effective and accurate sensor for the rapid determination of rice grain moisture, which is of great significance for monitoring the quality of rice grain during its production, transportation and storage process.
[A Study on Predicting Model of Organic Matter Contend Incorporating Soil Moisture Variation]

Abstract:Soil organic matter (SOM) is one of the most important measuring indexes of soil fertility. How to predict SOM spatial distribution precisely has great significance to soil carbon storage estimation and precision agriculture development. Traditional measurement of SOM, although with higher accuracy, consumes a lot of labor resources and costs long-term monitoring period, therefore, it is hard to achieve dynamic monitor of SOM. Spectroscopy technique has been used in SOM and other soil physicochemical parameters quick measurement. However spatial inversion model accuracy of SOM based on remote sensing images is relatively lower than laboratory model accuracy due to the influence of soil moisture, roughness and so on. In recent years, most studies have not eliminated the effect of moisture. Since moisture has great influence on SOM spectra reflectance, this study introduced the temporal information combined with the spectral information in order to solve this problem. Soil moisture has differences in multi period remote sensing images, and the spectra reflectance is also different. Based on the combination of reflectance from of two periods remote sensing images, the spectral index was constructed to predict SOM in this study. MODIS images of study area acquired in this study area (Blacksoil zone) because of the advantage of high temporal resolution. Spectra reflectance of MODIS images were used to analyze the effect of moisture on soil spectral reflectance, and then the spectral prediction models of SOM were built based on the comprehensive impacts of SOM and soil moisture. The results shows that: (1) the accuracy of SOM prediction model based on single image was lower without consideration of moisture effect, The Root mean square error (RMSE) of SOM prediction model were 0.591, 0.522, 0.545, 0.553, and the determination coefficient (R(2)) were 0.505, 0.614, 0.562, 0.568, 0.645 respectively based on the day of year (DOY) 117, 119, 130, 140, 143 single image. (2) Model with multi temporal images (DOY119 and 143) which considered the effect of moisture and SOM showed better predictive ability. RMSE was 0.442 while R2 was 0.723. Therefore the accuracy and stability of the model were significantly improved, and it can be used to predict the spatial distribution of SOM in regional scale. This study provides important information for regional soil fertility evaluation, soil carbon storage estimation, and precision agriculture development.

Abstract:When grown on blood-containing solid media, the anaerobic periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis produces a haem pigment, the major component of which is the mu-oxo bishaem of iron protoporphyrin IX [Smalley, Silver, Marsh and Birss (1998) Biochem. J. 331, 681-685]. In this study, mu-oxo bishaem generation by P. gingivalis from oxy- and deoxyhaemoglobin was examined. Bacterial cells were shown to convert oxyhaemoglobin into methaemoglobin, which was degraded progressively, generating a mixture of both monomeric and mu-oxo dimeric iron protoporphyrin IX. The rate of methaemoglobin formation was accelerated in the presence of bacterial cells, but was inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide and tosyl-lysylchloromethylketone. Interaction of cells with deoxyhaemoglobin resulted in formation of an iron(III) haem species (Soret gamma(max), 393 nm), identified as pure mu-oxo bishaem.

Abstract:Spectral imaging is performed primarily using reflective devices, but for transparent objects, especially transparent liquids, a transmission-based device is required to obtain more effective spectral imaging data. For this purpose, a transmitted spectral imaging data acquisition device based on a miniature multispectral spectrometer was developed and demonstrated its capability in the analysis of transparent liquids. This device allows rapid and noncontact acquisition of spectral imaging signals from transparent liquid samples. The design of the device mainly includes two parts: a shooting system and a master computer, and the optical path is optimized by selecting the appropriate diffusion plate. As an application example, a concentration-absorbance model of liquid samples at characteristic wavelengths was established and used to predict the concentrations of different liquid samples. Experimental results showed that the relative error of the predicted concentration values was within 4%, indicating excellent detection performance. Therefore, the design of the device demonstrates favorable feasibility and wide applicability in liquid detection systems.

Abstract:The improvement of water management in agriculture by exactly detecting moisture parameters of soil is crucial. To investigate this problem, a mini inside-out nuclear magnetic resonance sensor (NMR) was proposed to measure moisture parameters of model soils. This sensor combines three cylindrical magnets that are magnetized in the axial direction and three arc spiral coils of the same size in series. We calculated and optimized the magnet structure by equivalent magnetization to current density. By adjusting the radius and height between the cylinders, a circumferential symmetric constant gradient field (2.28 T/m) was obtained. The NMR sensor was set at 2.424 MHz to measure the water content of sandy soil with small particle diameter and silica sand with large particle diameter. The complete decaying, an NMR signal was analyzed through inverse Laplace transformation and averaged on a T-2 space. According to the results, moisture content of the sample is positively correlated with the integral area of T-2 spectrum peak (A(peak)); T-2 of the water in small pores is shorter than that in large pores, because the movement of water molecules are limited by the inner wall of the pores. In the same volume, water in large pore sample is more than that in small pore sample, so A(peak) of silica sand is larger than A(peak) of sandy soil. Therefore, the sensor is capable of detecting moisture both content and pore size of the sample. This mini sensor (4.0 cm in diameter and 10 cm in length) is portable, and the lowest measurable humidity is 0.38%. Thus, this sensor will allow easy soil moisture measurements on-field in the future.

Abstract:Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been widely applied in the areas of agriculture, food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries because of its advantages such as its speed, non-destructive nature and simultaneous detection of multiple components. However, most existing NIR instruments are too large to be carried into the field. Herein, we have developed an interface by which the application (app) runs on a smart phone (or tablet) to drive a miniature NIR spectrometer (MicroNIR, a product of the JDSU Uniphase Corporation). This app has three modules; the first drives the hardware to control the spectrometer; the second facilitates graphical display of spectral data, spectral pretreatment according to method provided by the model file and production of a calculated result while the third is the management of models, samples, spectral parameter setting and an address book. We have used this app with the MicroNIR to measure soluble solids content (SSC) in Fuji apples in the field; results were compatible with the reference results based on an Abbé refractometer analysis. To conclude, this new hand-held NIR spectroscopy system based on android device is convenient and practical in rapid measurement of SSC of Fuji apples in the field. It has potential to be used for in situ measurement of other constituents of agriculture products.
A Portable Spectrophotometer for Water Quality Analysis

Abstract:A portable water analyzer based on spectrophotometer has been designed and developed. The system embedded a module of 6 LEDs as long-life light source and a photodiode sensor transforms the light signal to electric signal, a microcontroller acts as the core of the analyzer to control the LEDs on/off, data acquisition, LCD and signal processing. For water quality analysis, a series of peak wavelength are selected including 420 nm, 455 nm, 515 nm, 560 nm, 605 nm and 630 nm, which can cover multiparameter like ammonia nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, hexavalent chromium and arsenite up to 45 types. In order to test the performance, optical absorbance is measured back and fro, the results show it is with virtue of high repeatability and linearity. The system is suitable for rapid test in laboratory and in-situ river water samples test.

Abstract:Soil profile moisture is a crucial parameter of agricultural irrigation. To meet the demand of soil profile moisture, simple fast-sensing, and low-cost in situ detection, a portable pull-out soil profile moisture sensor was designed based on the principle of high-frequency capacitance. The sensor consists of a moisture-sensing probe and a data processing unit. The probe converts soil moisture into a frequency signal using an electromagnetic field. The data processing unit was designed for signal detection and transmitting moisture content data to a smartphone app. The data processing unit and the probe are connected by a tie rod with adjustable length, which can be moved up and down to measure the moisture content of different soil layers. According to indoor tests, the maximum detection height for the sensor was 130 mm, the maximum detection radius was 96 mm, and the degree of fitting (R2) of the constructed moisture measurement model was 0.972. In the verification tests, the root mean square error (RMSE) of the measured value of the sensor was 0.02 m3/m3, the mean bias error (MBE) was ±0.009 m3/m3, and the maximum error was ±0.039 m3/m3. According to the results, the sensor, which features a wide detection range and good accuracy, is well suited for the portable measurement of soil profile moisture.
