Abstract:Plants serve as a crucial source of active ingredients in skincare products and cosmetics. The use of plants as a source of active principles for cosmetics has significantly increased in the last few years. Safety, compatibility with all types of skin, fewer side effects, and availability are among the advantages of herbal cosmetics above synthetic ingredients. The present review aims to explore the most important plants used in cosmetics. A literature search was carried out in several electronic databases with the following phrases: skincare and plants; cosmetics and plants; natural and cosmetics; and natural and skincare. Furthermore, more detailed filters such as clinical studies, meta‐analyses, and systemic reviews were applied to positive results. Various plants and plant extracts currently used in skin care, scaring, whitening, and aging, as well as in sun protection, acne, eczema, and others, have been included in this review. The effectiveness of these plants is based mainly on preclinical research, and to a lesser extent on clinical studies. Some plant extracts or oils have been tested clinically, such as onions, aloe, and tea tree oil, more than other plant extracts. Despite many studies on natural products to improve dermal needs, proper clinical cosmeceutical trials are much fewer than expected. Therefore, more clinical trials are needed to evaluate appropriate efficacy. Furthermore, new formulation technologies might enhance the cosmeceutical benefits, but more work is warranted.

Abstract:Herbal extracts and isolated plant compounds play an increasing role in the treatment of skin disorders and wounds. Several new herbal drugs, medicinal products and cosmetic products for the treatment of various skin conditions have been developed in recent years. In this nonsystematic review, we focus on herbal drugs that were tested in controlled clinical studies or in scientifically sound preclinical studies. The herbal biomedicines are intended to treat atopic dermatitis (St. John's wort, licorice, tormentil, bitter substances, evening primrose), psoriasis (araroba tree, lace flower, barberry bark, indigo, turmeric, olibanum, St. John's wort), actinic keratosis (birch bark, petty spurge), herpes simplex (lemon balm, sage and rhubarb), rosacea (green tea, licorice, tormentil) and acne vulgaris (tea tree oil, green tea, hop), or to improve photo protection (green tea, Dyer's weed, cocoa tree, carotinoids, licorice), aesthetic dermatology (licorice, pine bark, gotu kola) and wound healing (birch bark, onion).

Abstract:Complementary and alternative medicine approaches are popular among some patient segments due to the perception that they are "natural" and thus are believed to be less likely to be dangerous, to be less toxic, or to cause fewer side effects. In dermatology, these can include aromatherapy, botanicals, and essential oils (plant extracts). Preliminary evidence, biological activity studies, and small pilot clinical trials conducted outside of North America, mostly in young adults, suggest that some may have value in acne treatment. When additional research and larger clinical trials are conducted, both clinicians and patients will be able to understand the risks and benefits compared with allopathic remedies.
Dermocosmetics for dry skin: a new role for botanical extracts

Abstract:Dry skin is associated with a disturbed skin barrier and reduced formation of epidermal proteins and lipids. During recent years, skin-barrier-reinforcing properties of some botanical compounds have been described. Searching the PubMed database revealed 9 botanical extracts that specifically improve skin barrier and/or promote keratinocyte differentiation in vivo after topical application. The topical application of Aloe vera (leaf gel), Betula alba (birch bark extract), Helianthus annuus (sunflower oleodistillate), Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort extract), Lithospermum erythrorhizon (root extract), Piptadenia colubrina (angico-branco extract) and Simarouba amara (bitter wood extract) increased skin hydration, reduced the transepidermal water loss, or promoted keratinocyte differentiation in humans in vivo. The topical application of Rubia cordifolia root extract and rose oil obtained from Rosa spp. flowers stimulated keratinocyte differentiation in mouse models. The underlying mechanisms of these effects are discussed. It is concluded that some botanical compounds display skin-barrier-reinforcing properties that may be used in dermocosmetics for dry skin. However, more investigations on the mode of action and more vehicle-controlled studies are required.

The Therapeutic Potential of Essential Oils in Managing Inflammatory Skin Conditions: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Conventional therapy is commonly used for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions, but undesirable effects, such as erythema, dryness, skin thinning, and resistance to treatment, may cause poor patient compliance. Therefore, patients may seek complementary treatment with herbal plant products including essential oils (EOs). This scoping review aims to generate a broad overview of the EOs used to treat inflammatory skin conditions, namely, acne vulgaris, dermatitis and eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea, in a clinical setting. The quality, efficacy, and safety of various EOs, as well as the way in which they are prepared, are reviewed, and the potential, as well as the limitations, of EOs for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions are discussed. Twenty-nine eligible studies (case studies, uncontrolled clinical studies, and randomized clinical studies) on the applications of EOs for inflammatory skin conditions were retrieved from scientific electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library). As an initial result, tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil emerged as the most studied EO. The clinical studies with tea tree oil gel for acne treatment showed an efficacy with fewer adverse reactions compared to conventional treatments. The uncontrolled studies indicated the potential efficacy of ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) oil, eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) oil, and cedarwood (Cedrus libani) oil in the treatment of acne, but further research is required to reach conclusive evidence. The placebo-controlled studies revealed the positive effects of kānuka (Kunzea ericoides) oil and frankincense (Boswellia spp.) oil in the treatment of psoriasis and eczema. The quality verification of the EO products was inconsistent, with some studies lacking analyses and transparency. The quality limitations of some studies included a small sample size, a short duration, and the absence of a control group. This present review underscores the need for extended, well-designed clinical studies to further assess the efficacy and safety of EOs for treating inflammatory skin conditions with products of assured quality and to further elucidate the mechanisms of action involved.

Structural requirements of nociceptin antagonist Ac‐RYYRIK‐NH2 for receptor binding

Abstract:Ac‐RYYRIK‐NH2 is a peptide isolated from the peptide library as an antagonist that inhibits the biological activities of nociceptin, a hyperalgesic neuropeptide. In order to clarify the structural requirements of this peptide for binding to the nociceptin receptor ORL1, systematic structure–activity studies were carried out. The result of Ala‐scanning indicated that the N‐terminal tripeptide RYY(=Arg‐Tyr‐Tyr) is crucially important for binding to the ORL1 receptor. Residual truncations from the N‐ or C‐terminus revealed the special importance of the N‐terminal Arg residue. The removal of protecting groups indicated that the N‐terminal acetyl group is essential, but the C‐terminal amide group is insignificant. These results indicated the conspicuous importance of acetyl‐Arg at position 1 of Ac‐RYYRIK‐NH2 as a key structure allowing binding to the receptor. To investigate the binding site of this peptide in the ORL1 receptor, we synthesized and assayed a series of analogues of the nociceptin dibasic repeat region, residues 8–13 of RKSARK. None of the derivatives were active. Ac‐RYYRIK‐NH2 was inactive for the µ opioid receptor to which nociceptin binds with considerable strength. All the results suggested that the mode of binding between Ac‐RYYRIK‐NH2 and the ORL1 receptor is different to that between the ORL1 receptor and nociceptin, and that it may consist of interaction with the receptor site to which nociceptin(1–7) or ‐(14–17) binds. Abstract:Introduction: Dermocosmetics are increasingly being recognized as an integral part of acne management. Dermocosmetics may minimize the side effects of acne medications, provide synergistic effects by improving the efficacy of other treatments, and limit exposure to environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation. We aimed to provide an overview of the active ingredients and different types of preparations used in dermocosmetics for acne, and highlight supporting evidence for their use in clinical practice.Methods: A literature search for selected key words was performed using PubMed. Additional papers were identified based on author expertize.Results and discussion: The different types of active ingredients in dermocosmetics for acne can be classified as: sebum-controlling, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and/or keratolytic. Such agents may modulate the pathogenic pathways in acne. Dermocosmetics can be formulated as emulsions/creams, cleansers or camouflaging make-up. Dermocosmetics are useful treatment adjuncts for acne and have been shown to improve the clinical signs of acne, reduce transepidermal water loss and modify sebum production. Dermocosmetics have also been associated with reducing side effects of pharmacological treatments, high levels of patient satisfaction and increased adherence to treatment regimens. Together this evidence supports the use of dermocosmetics in clinical practice.

Abstract:Treatment of skin conditions with medicinal plants has been an ongoing human activity lasting over thousands of years. The use of specific plant species developed regionally, based on local flora. Commonly used medicinal plants for dermatological complaints are: Phlebodium aureum (L.) J. Sm., Ginkgo biloba L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Panax ginseng C.A.Mey., Allium cepa L., Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f., Capsicum annuum L., Berbe ris aquifolium Pursh, Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze, and Podophyllum peltatum L. The demand for complementary therapeutics is an emerging trend due to the awareness of potential side effects that synthetic drugs might cause. More scientific evidence and better documentation are needed before advising dermatologic patients on herbal medicinal treatment. Standardised extracts and formulations with proven clinical efficacy should be developed for this cause. Here provided review entails the use of herbal medicinal products in the treatment of frequent chronic skin diseases, such as vitiligo, alopecia, psoriasis and genital warts.

Abstract:Inflammation, follicular epidermal hyperproliferation, and Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) are the primary causes of acne vulgaris, a prevalent skin condition that affects millions of young adults and adolescents. This intricate pathophysiology leads to various acne symptoms, such as whiteheads and blackheads, inflammatory nodules, and scarring. Among the many traditional allopathic acne therapies that often have serious side effects include hormone therapy, hydroxy acids, oral and topical antibiotics, retinoic acid derivatives, and acne medications. Herbal extracts are becoming more and more well-liked as more holistic, kinder substitutes with fewer side effects. Herbal extracts with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant qualities include Eucalyptus Globulus, Thymus vulgaris (thyme), Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree), Lavandula angustifolia (lavender), Origanum vulgare (oregano), and Curcuma longa (turmeric). Because of these qualities, they are considered to be viable candidates for treating different elements of acne etiology, including wound healing, inflammation reduction, and P. acnes growth inhibition. Developing herbal remedies is a viable approach to developing efficient and minimally invasive acne treatments. Medicinal plants and essential oils have a long history of traditional use and the potential to attenuate harmful exposures and lessen drug-induced side effects. Their use in dermatological treatments demonstrates their ability to offer comprehensive and natural solutions for the treatment of acne vulgaris, a common and frequently upsetting skin condition.

Abstract:Background A wide variety of dermocosmetics (products with both active skincare and cosmetic activity) are available for the management of acne vulgaris. These products are important because they may be the first line of approach for patients desiring to self‐treat and they can also have beneficial effects—reducing lesion counts and improving global acne severity. When used in conjunction with medical therapy, dermocosmetics can improve tolerability and enhance results. We reviewed available evidence and combined it with our clinical experience to help guide clinicians in selecting skincare products with acne‐targeting ingredients. Methods An international panel of dermatologists with an interest and expertise in managing acne performed a literature review, formulated clinical questions related to the role of dermocosmetics in the acne setting, used a modified GRADE approach to evaluate available evidence and then utilized an online iterative Delphi process to create consensus recommendations. It should be noted that due to the limited number of available studies, the category of dermocosmetics was evaluated rather than specific ingredients. Results The quality of evidence was found to be low to moderate. Key recommendations were made based on available evidence for the use of dermocosmetics in acne to improve acne global assessment, reduce acne lesion counts, reduce superficial skin oiliness and serve as maintenance therapy after medical treatment, while providing a good tolerability. Recommendations were also made for using dermocosmetics as adjuncts to medical treatment. Conclusions While there is a need for better quality evidence, dermocosmetics have demonstrated some benefit for acne both when used alone in its milder clinical presentations or in maintenance post acne medication and as adjunct to acne treatments.

Abstract:Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that involves the pilosebaceous unit. It is a common universal disease affecting about 85% of teenagers. The disfiguring dermatosis of acne can destroy self-confidence, causing significant emotional distress. Topical and systemic therapies are available as a conventional acne treatment, including comedolytic agents, antibiotics, and various anti-inflammatory drugs. Interest in medicinal herbs has been progressively increasing due to antibiotic resistance in acne-causing bacteria, side effects, and sometimes high cost of conventional treatment. This review provides up-to-date evidence on medicinal plants and the phytoconstituents used in acne treatment. The data presented in this review were gathered from several databases, including Pubmed, Wiley Online Library, Elsevier, and Web of Science, using keywords such as; Acne vulgaris, Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes), skin diseases, medicinal plants, active constituents, complementary and alternative medicines. The present manuscript provides an updated review of the most reported active constituents with anti-acne properties. Among these classes were the phenolic compounds, exemplified by anthraquinones, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, certain terpenes and oxygenated terpenes present in the essential oils of many medicinal plants.

Abstract:Dietary patterns have been shown to worsen or alleviate several dermatological diseases. A well-balanced, plant-based diet is known to have anti-inflammatory, probiotic, and antioxidant properties, along with weight loss-promoting effects. Moreover, a plant-based diet has a low glycemic load, improving metabolic disease. Due to these qualities, plant-based diets may have beneficial effects on inflammatory skin conditions. In this review, we aim to discuss the possible mechanisms by which a plant-based diet reduces disease severity in psoriasis, acne, hidradenitis suppurativa, and atopic dermatitis. We also aim to clarify how a plant-based diet may influence skin healing and identify sources of vitamins, nutrients, fatty acids, and protein in a well-balanced, plant-based diet. We performed a literature search on PubMed/MEDLINE databases with the following keywords: "plant-based" OR "vegan" OR "vegetarian" OR "meat" OR "diet" AND "psoriasis" OR "hidradenitis suppurativa" OR "acne" OR "atopic dermatitis" OR "skin healing" OR "dermatology". Our findings demonstrate that plant-based foods may improve inflammatory skin diseases by supporting the gut microbiome, exerting anti-inflammatory effects, providing barrier support, and improving glycemic control. With the proper education, there is an abundance of plant-based food sources or supplements that contain riboflavin, vitamin B12, vitamin A, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein, thereby ameliorating the risk of nutritional deficiencies. Thus, a plant-based diet may have therapeutic potential in dermatology. In spite of the evidence available, there is a paucity of clinical studies focusing specifically on plant-based diets and dermatologic conditions and further investigation is warranted.

Abstract:Abstract: Frequently occurring inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, including skin cancer, wounds and other disorders arising out of premature skin aging, deteriorate skin health and adversely impact human life. Even though several synthetic compounds have evolved for treating these skin conditions, natural-product-based therapeutics are gaining popularity with growing evidence of their efficacy and safety for treating skin disorders. Many of these inflammatory skin diseases have underlying disturbances in our immune system and immunomodulatory natural products provide solutions for their effective treatment and aid in understanding the underlying mechanism of such inflammatory skin conditions. Based on this premise, the present review summarizes the possible application of plant-derived immunomodulatory compositions and single molecules for treating inflammatory skin conditions. in vitro, in vivo and mechanistic studies reported the application of selected plant-derived natural products for the treatment of inflammatory skin disorders including, cancer and infections. Several online databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct have been searched for gathering the information covered in this review. Empirical studies demonstrated that most of these natural compounds exhibited therapeutic properties through their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory potential supplemented often with anti-microbial, anti-neoplastic, and anti- oxidant activities. Overall, plant-based natural products discussed here are capable of modulating the immune system to minimize or completely suppress the pro-inflammatory markers, scavenge free radicals (ROS), prevent bacteria, fungal, and virus-derived skin infections and often regress skin cancer through the induction of apoptosis. The challenges and opportunities associated with the application of plant-based immunomodulators for skin applications and their safety considerations are also discussed here. The present study indicated that immunomodulatory plant natural products being biologically validated ligands against various biological targets manifested in inflammatory skin diseases, offer an effective, safe and affordable treatment for such disorders affecting skin health. However, further clinical evaluations are needed to substantiate these findings.

Abstract:BackgroundWhile a plethora of literature continues to be published on the role of nutritional agents both in lay press and indexed journals, the data is not on a firm footing and leaves the dermatologist in a quandry and the patient confused. The various agents include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, diets & gluten. A proper knowledge of the role of nutritional supplements in dermatological diseases can be a useful tool in advising the patients and in certain cases ameliorating the disorder. Patients/MethodsLiterature review of last 15 years was made using the terms "diet in dermatology," "nutrition and skin," "nutritional supplements in dermatology," "nutritional agents and acne," "nutritional agents and alopecia," and "nutritional agents and psoriasis." ResultsWhile there are multiple publications on the use of nutritional supplements for amelioration of skin diseases, most of them are based on either associations or in vitro studies, but very few transcend the rigors of a clinical trial or the holey grail of a double-blinded randomized controlled trial. There seem to be some evidence in acne, psoriasis, telogen effluvium, urticaria & vitiligo. Coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis have a strong link with diet. Rosacea has a strong link with certain foods, but the other disorders like melasma, aphthous stomatitis do not have any scientifically validated association with diet. ConclusionsOur updated review examines the role of nutritional supplements and antioxidants in various dermatological disorders. We have found that there are varying levels of evidence with notable associations of low glycemic diet & acne, fish oil & weight loss with psoriasis, fish oils & probiotics with atopic dermatitis & vitamins & botanical extracts with vitiligo. The evidence for diet and nutrition in bullous disorders and photoageing is scarce. The role of low histamine diet in urticaria is useful in select cases of episodic urticaria. Rosacea is triggered by hot and spicy food . Apart from gluten and Dermatitis Herpetiformis, no diet can be considered disease modifying in our reveiw. The lack of comparison of nutritional or dietary modiffication with conventional validated agents, makes the data difficult to translate in real world patient management.

Abstract:Dermatological issues pose a frequent challenge for small clinical practitioners, presenting a spectrum of conditions encompassing otitis, pyoderma, anal sac problems, flea allergy, and atopic dermatitis (AD). Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a chronic and recurring skin condition characterized by distributed skin lesions. In recent decades, researchers have shown a keen interest in AD due to its increased prevalence in developed countries. While various treatment strategies, including biological and immune modulators, are available for AD, each has certain limitations. Researchers have exhibited a significant interest in managing AD with herbal medicines. The use of herbal drugs for AD could potentially eliminate local and systemic adverse effects associated with long-term corticosteroid use, as well as reduce the high cost of therapy with biological drugs. This review discusses traditional East Asian herbal medicines as well as scientific data related to newer herbal extracts or compositions for the treatment of AD. The paper also delves into in vivo animal models and in vitro cell cultures that have been investigated with herbal medicines to establish a potential role in the treatment of AD. In conclusion, herbal medicines could serve as a better and safer complementary and alternative treatment option for AD.

Abstract:Our increased knowledge of normal skin physiology has ushered in a subtle revolution in cosmetic science. Originally designed as preparations to enhance personal appearance by direct application on to the skin, cosmetics have now taken on a new role in dermatology, through the support of the management of many skin disorders. This evolving role of cosmetics in skin care is primarily due to scientific and technological advancements that have changed our understanding of normal skin physiology and how cosmetics modify its appearance both physically and biologically. The vast array of techniques currently available to investigate skin responsivity to multiple stimuli has brought about a new era in cosmetic and dermocosmetic development based on a robust understanding of skin physiology and its varied responses to commonly encountered environmental insults. Most cosmetic research is undertaken on reconstructed skin models crucial in dermatological research, given the strict ban imposed by the European Union on animal testing. In addition, the design and conduct of trials evaluating cosmetics now follow rules comparable to those used in the development and evaluation of pharmaceutical products. Cosmetic research should now aim to ensure all trials adhere to strictly reproducible and scientifically sound methodologies. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of the multidisciplinary scientific approach used in formulating dermocosmetics, and to examine the major advances in dermocosmetic development and assessment, the safety and regulatory guidelines governing their production and the exciting future outlook for these dermocosmetic processes following good practice rules.

Vegetable Butters and Oils as Therapeutically and Cosmetically Active Ingredients for Dermal Use: A Review of Clinical Studies

Abstract:While the chemical composition of vegetable butters and oils has been studied in detail, there is limited knowledge about their mechanisms of action after application on the skin. To understand their dermal effects better, 27 clinical studies evaluating 17 vegetable oils (almond, argan, avocado, borage, coconut, evening primrose, kukui, marula, mustard, neem, olive, rapeseed, sacha inchi, safflower, shea butter, soybean and sunflower oils) were reviewed in this research. The reviewed studies focused on non-affected skin, infant skin, psoriasis, xerosis, UVB-induced erythema, atopic dermatitis, molluscum contagiosum, tungiasis, scars, striae and striae gravidarum. We conclude that in inflammation-affected skin, vegetable oils with a high content of oleic acid, together with the lack of or a low linoleic acid content, may cause additional structural damage of the stratum corneum, while oils high in linoleic acid and saturated fatty acids may express positive effects. Non-affected skin, in contrast, may not react negatively to oils high in oleic acid. However, the frequency and duration of an oil's use must be considered an important factor that may accelerate or enhance the negative effects on the skin's structural integrity.
Safety and Effectiveness of Oral Nutraceuticals for Treating Acne: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Importance: Patients with acne are interested in nutraceuticals as a potential treatment option. However, there is uncertainty regarding the efficacy and safety of these products. Objective: To evaluate the evidence for oral nutraceuticals in the treatment of acne. Evidence review: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception through January 30, 2023, to identify randomized clinical trials evaluating oral nutraceutical interventions (ie, vitamins and minerals, botanical extracts, prebiotics, and probiotics) in individuals with acne. Clinician-reported outcomes (eg, investigator global assessment, lesion counts), patient-reported outcomes (eg, quality of life), and adverse events were extracted from the included studies. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias checklist tool for randomized clinical trials. Based on the Risk of Bias tool, articles were converted to Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality standards of good, fair, or poor quality. Findings: A total of 2582 abstracts were identified in the database search, 42 of which met inclusion criteria (a total of 3346 participants). Studies of fair or good quality showed the potential benefit of vitamins B5 and D, botanical extracts (green tea), probiotics, and ω-3 fatty acids in the treatment of acne. These interventions were most frequently associated with decreased lesion counts or improved investigator global assessment scores. Adverse effects were rare for most of the therapies evaluated, but gastrointestinal tract adverse effects were reported for zinc therapy. Conclusions and relevance: This systematic review suggests a possible role for nutraceutical supplements in the treatment of acne. Physicians should be prepared to discuss the evidence regarding the potential role of nutraceuticals with patients. Many studies were of small size, and future research should focus on larger randomized clinical trials to assess the utility of nutraceuticals in the treatment of acne.
