Abstract:Mosquitoes, one of the deadliest animals on the planet, cause millions of fatalities each year by transmitting several human illnesses. Synthetic pesticides were previously used to prevent the spread of diseases by mosquitoes, which was effective in protecting humans but caused serious human health problems, environmental damage, and developed mosquito pesticide resistance. This research focuses on exploring new, more effective, safer, and environmentally friendly compounds to improve mosquito vector management. Phytochemicals are possible biological agents for controlling pests and many are target-specific, rapidly biodegradable, and eco-friendly. The potential of extracts of Lantana camara, Melia azedarach, Nerium oleander, Ricinus communis, and Withania somnifera against 3rd instar Culex pipiens (Common house mosquito) larvae was evaluated. Methanol extracts had more toxic effects against Cx. pipiens larvae (95-100%, 24 h post-treatment) than aqueous extracts (63-91%, 24 h post-treatment). The methanol extracts of Nerium oleander (LC50 = 158.92 ppm) and Ricinus communis (LC50 = 175.04 ppm) were very effective at killing mosquito larvae, 24 h after treatment. N. oleander (LC50 = 373.29 ppm) showed high efficacy in aqueous plant extracts. Among the different extracts of the five plants screened, the methanol extract of R. communis recorded the highest ovicidal activity of 5% at 800 ppm concentration. Total developmental duration and growth index were highly affected by R. communis and M. azedarach methanol extracts. In field tests it was clear that plant extracts decreased mosquito larval density, especially when mixed with mosquito Bti briquette, with stability up to seven days for N. oleander. GC-MS results showed that the methanol extract had a higher number of chemical compounds, particularly with more terpene compounds. A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique was used to detect the existence of non-volatile polyphenols and flavonoids. All five methanol extracts showed high concentrations of active ingredients such as gallic acid, chlorogenic acid (more than 100 μg/ml) and the rosmarinic acid was also found in all the five extracts in addition to 17 active polyphenols and flavonoids presented at moderate to low concentrations. Molecular modeling of 18 active ingredients detected by the HPLC were performed to the vicinity of one of the fatty acid binding proteins of lm-FABP (PDB code: 2FLJ). Rutin, Caffeic acid, coumaric acid and rosmarinic acid which presented densely in R. communis and N. oleander showed multiple and stable intermolecular hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions. The inhibition ability of the fatty acid binding protein, FABP4, was evaluated with remarkable receptor inhibition evident, especially with R. communis and N. oleander having inhibitory concentrations of IC50 = 0.425 and 0.599 µg/mL, respectively. The active phytochemical compounds in the plants suggest promising larvicidal and ovicidal activity, and have potential as a safe and effective alternative to synthetic insecticides.
Chemical composition of four essential oils and their adulticidal, repellence, and field oviposition deterrence activities against Culex pipiens L. (Diptera: Culicidae)

Abstract:Effective mosquito repellents can limit the transmission of vector-borne diseases to humans. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop mosquito control strategies that prioritize eco-friendly and cost-effective repellents. Essential oils (EOs) have enormous potential for mosquito repellency. Here, cinnamon, basil, eucalyptus, and peppermint EOs were investigated for adulticide and repellency properties against Culex pipiens as well on the oviposition behavior of gravid females from laboratory (lab test) and field (field test) populations. Cinnamon oil was an effective oviposition deterrent regardless of the population and had high adulticidal activity with toxicity index of 75.00% at 24 h of exposure, relative to deltamethrin. In addition, it exhibited effective repellency at 98.01% and 71.22% at 6.67 and 1.71 μl/cm 2 , respectively. Peppermint oil had the least adulticidal activity with toxicity index of 6.2% at 24 h, and it resulted in low repellency at 70.90% and 50.64% at 6.67 and 1.71 μl/cm 2 , respectively. On average, basil and eucalyptus oils showed some adulticidal efficiency, repellency, and oviposition deterrent activity. For all treatments, the oviposition deterrent index values of gravid females from natural populations (field test) were lower than those from lab-reared (lab test) females. Different ratios of monoterpenoids, phenylpropanoids, and fatty acids in the EOs tested likely account for the activity variations observed. Our results suggest cinnamon, basil, eucalyptus, and peppermint EOs, which are widely available, economical, and eco-friendly, with good potential for mosquito control strategies.

Abstract:Mosquitoes are blood-feeding insects and serve as the most important vectors for spreading human diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and filariasis. The continued use of synthetic insecticides has resulted in resistance in mosquitoes. Synthetic insecticides are toxic and affect the environment by contaminating soil, water, and air, and then natural products may be an alternative to synthetic insecticides because they are effective, biodegradable, eco-friendly, and safe to environment. Botanical origin may serve as suitable alternative biocontrol techniques in the future. Mentha spicata, an edible and medicinal plant, is chiefly distributed in Southeast Asia and South Asia. In the present study, the toxicity of mosquito larvicidal activity of leaf essential oil (EO) and their major chemical constituents from Mentha spicata against Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti, and Anopheles stephensi. The chemical composition of the leaf EO was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). GC-MS revealed that the EO of M. spicata contained 18 compounds. The major chemical components identified were carvone (48.60%), cis-carveol (21.30%), and limonene (11.30%). The EO had a significant toxic effect against early third-stage larvae of C. quinquefasciatus, A. aegypti, and A. stephensi with LC(50) values of 62.62, 56.08, and 49.71 ppm and LC(90) values of 118.70, 110.28, and 100.99 ppm, respectively. The three major pure constituents extracted from the M. spicata leaf EO were also tested individually against three mosquito larvae. The LC(50) values of carvone, cis-carveol, and limonene appeared to be most effective against A. stephensi (LC(50) 19.33, 28.50, and 8.83 ppm) followed by A. aegypti (LC(50) 23.69, 32.88, and 12.01 ppm), and C. quinquefasciatus (LC(50) 25.47, 35.20, and 14.07 ppm). The results could be useful in search for newer, safer, and more effective natural larvicidal agents against C. quinquefasciatus, A. aegypti, and A. stephensi.

Abstract:Current vector control strategies based on synthetic chemicals are not eco-friendly against non-target organisms; hence, alternative approaches are highly required. Commercially purchased oil of Mentha spicata (Spearmint) and Eucalyptus citriodora (Citriodora) were examined against the medical pest Cx. quinquefasciatus (Say) and their non-toxicity on the aquatic species was evaluated. Chemical screening with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis revealed a total of 14 and 11 compounds in Citriodora and Spearmint oils, respectively, with the highest peak (%) at carvone (70.44%) and isopulegol (30.4%). The larvicidal activity on the fourth instar larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus showed dose-dependent mortality and significance at a 100 ppm concentration 48 h post-treatment with Citriodora (76.4%, P ≤ 0.001) and Spearmint (100%, P ≤ 0.001). Additionally, the photomicrograph of the fourth instar larvae revealed significant physical abnormalities in the head and midgut tissues post-exposure to Spearmint and Citriodora oils. Moreover, the histological assay revealed severe damage in the epithelial cells and gut lumen 2 to 24 h post-treatment. The repellency percentage of adult Culex mosquitoes was prominent across both oils at 150 ppm 210 min post-exposure. Non-target toxicity on the aquatic predator showed both essential oils (Spearmint oil (17.2%) and Citriodora oil (15.2%)) are safer at the maximum treatment (200 ppm) compared to temephos (75.4% at 1 ppm). The in silico screening of phyto-compounds derived by both essential oils with BeeTox (online server) showed no contact toxicity to the honey bee Apis mellifera . Overall, the present research revealed that Spearmint and Citriodora essential oils and their active phyto-compounds were toxic to Cx. quinquefasciatus and harmless to the aquatic predator and honey bee.

Abstract:Mosquitoes prefer stagnant areas near hospitals to live and easily spread pathogenic bacteria. Our current study aims to isolate multidrug-resistant (MDR) Staphylococcus aureus isolates from midguts of Mosquito Culex pipiens and study the potential of mint as a biocontrol strategy against C. pipiens larvae and their midgut-borne S. aureus . Samples of the third and fourth larval instars of C. pipiens were collected from water ponds around three Cairo hospitals. Ciprofloxacin, gentamycin and tetracycline, as well as various concentrations of mint leaf extract (MLE) were tested for antibiotic susceptibility. Sixty-five isolates were obtained and showed antibiotic resistance to tetracycline, gentamycin, ciprofloxacin, and undiluted MLE with resistant percentages (%) of 27.69, 30.76, 17.46, and 23.08%, respectively. Undiluted MLE inhibited 61.53% of the multidrug S. aureus isolates, whereas it couldn't inhibit any of these isolates at dilutions less than 50 μg/mL. The MIC of MLE was ≤ 700 μg/mL, while the MIC of the antibiotics ranged from 0.25 to 5.0 μg/mL for the three antibiotics. The most inhibited S. aureus isolate was identified by 16SrRNA sequencing approach and registered in GenBank as S. aureus MICBURN with gene accession number OQ766965. MLE killed all larval stages after 72 h of exposure, with mortality (%) reaching 93.33 and 100% causing external hair loss, breakage of the outer cuticle epithelial layer of the abdomen, and larvae shrinkage. Histopathology of treated larvae showed destruction of all midgut cells and organelles. Gas chromatography (GC) of MLE revealed that menthol extract (35.92%) was the largest active ingredient, followed by menthone (19.85%), D-Carvone (15.46%), Pulegone (5.0579%). Docking analysis confirmed that alpha guanine and cadinol had the highest binding affinity to both predicted active sites of Culex pipiens acetylcholinesterase. As a result, alpha-guanine and cadinol might have a role as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors.

Abstract:Aedes aegypti, the main arbovirus vector of the Yellow fever, Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika viruses, is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world. Preventive control efforts have been implemented worldwide aimed at reducing its impact on human health. The recent reduction of chemicals available for vector control due to their negative impact on the environment and human health and the increase in mosquito resistance to insecticides have driven the research community to identify and evaluate sustainable alternatives to synthetic insecticides. In this study, the potential larvicidal effect of essential oils extracted from Ocimum campechianum, Ocotea quixos and Piper aduncum were tested in vitro. GC and GC-MS analyses showed that the main compounds were eugenol (18%), 1,8-cineole (39%) and dillapiole (48%), respectively. Susceptibility to essential oils was measured according to the WHO protocol. After 24 h, the mean percentage mortality ranged from 2.7 to 100% for P. aduncum, from 2.2 to 100% for O. campechianum, and from 2.9 to 100% for O. quixos. The highest potential was displayed by P. aduncum, followed by O. campechianum and O. quixos, with LC50 values of 25.7, 69.3 and 75.5 ppm, respectively. The rapid and effective larvicidal activity of these three oils led us to consider these results to be promising, also considering the possibility of local cultivation of these plants in tropical and subtropical areas and the simple technology for their large-scale preparation and production. Further studies are needed to evaluate the individual components and their activity as larvicides.
Synergistic Effect of Bioactive Monoterpenes against the Mosquito, Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae)

Abstract:Mosquitoes represent one of the most important vectors and are responsible for the transmission of many arboviruses that affect human and animal health. The chemical method using synthetic insecticides disturbs the environmental system and promotes the appearance of resistant insect species. Therefore, this study investigated the insecticidal effect of some binary monoterpene combinations (1,8 cineole + α-pinene and carvone + R (+)-pulegone) using a mixture design approach. The fumigant toxicity was evaluated against Culex pipiens female adults using glass jars. The results show that the toxicity varies according to the proportions of each compound. Indeed, Mixture 1 (1,8-cineole + α-pinene) displayed a strong toxic effect (51.00 ± 0.86% after 24 h and 100.00 ± 0.70% after 48 h) when the pure compounds were tested at 0.25/0.75 proportions of 1,8-cineole and α-pinene, respectively. Nevertheless, the equal proportion (0.5/0.5) of carvone and R (+)-pulegone in Mixture 2 exhibited a toxic effect of 54.35 ± 0.75% after 24 h and 89.96 ± 0.14% after 48 h, respectively. For Mixture 1, the maximum area of mortality that the proposed model indicated was obtained between 0/1 and 0.25/0.75, while the maximum area of mortality in the case of Mixture 2 was obtained between 0.25/0.75 and 0.75/0.25. Moreover, the maximum possible values of mortality that could be achieved by the validated model were found to be 51.44% (after 24 h) and 100.24% (after 48 h) for Mixture 1 and 54.67% (after 24 h) and 89.99% (after 48 h) for Mixture 2. It can be said that all purev molecules tested through the binary mixtures acted together, which enhanced the insecticide's effectiveness. These findings are very promising, as the chemical insecticide (deltamethrin) killed only 19.29 ± 0.01% and 34.05 ± 1.01% of the female adults after 24 h and 48 h, respectively. Thus, the findings of our research could help with the development of botanical insecticides that might contribute to management programs for controlling vectors of important diseases.

Abstract:Mosquito-borne diseases represent a growing health challenge over time. Numerous potential phytochemicals are target-specific, biodegradable, and eco-friendly. The larvicidal activity of essential oils, a jasmine blend consisting of Jasmine oil and Azores jasmine (AJ) ( Jasminum sambac and Jasminum azoricum ) and peppermint (PP) Mentha arvensis and their nanoformulations against 2nd and 4th instar larvae of Culex pipiens , was evaluated after subjecting to different concentrations (62.5, 125, 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 ppm). Two forms of phase-different nanodelivery systems of layered double hydroxide LDH and oil/water nanoemulsions were formulated. The synthesized nanoemulsions showed particle sizes of 199 and 333 nm for AJ-NE and PP-NE, with a polydispersity index of 0.249 and 0.198, respectively. Chemical and physiochemical analysis of TEM, SEM, XRD, zeta potential, drug loading capacity, and drug release measurements were done to confirm the synthesis and loading efficiencies of essential oils' active ingredients. At high concentrations of AJ and PP nanoemulsions (2000 ppm), O/W nanoemulsions showed higher larval mortality than both LDH conjugates and crude oils. The mortality rate reached 100% for 2nd and 4th instar larvae. The relative toxicities revealed that PP nanoemulsion (MA-NE) was the most effective larvicide, followed by AJ nanoemulsion (AJ-NE). There was a significant increase in defensive enzymes, phenoloxidase, and α and β-esterase enzymes in the treated groups. After treatment of L4 with AJ, AJ-NE, PP, and PP-NE, the levels of phenoloxidase were 545.67, 731.00, 700.00, and 799.67 u/mg, respectively, compared with control 669.67 u/mg. The activity levels of α-esterase were 9.71, 10.32, 8.91, and 10.55 mg α-naphthol/min/mg protein, respectively. It could be concluded that the AJ-NE and PP-NE nanoformulations have promising larvicidal activity and could act as safe and effective alternatives to chemical insecticides.

Abstract:Artemisia herba-alba Asso (A. herba-alba) (Asteraceae) is widely used in herbal medicine as it is a mine of natural molecules such as davanone, which is an interesting product on the international market. The present research proposes a method for controlling the late larval (L4) and pupal stages of Culex pipiens based on the essential oil of A. herba-alba. The aerial part of this plant was extracted by hydrodistillation and then analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (CPG/SM) to determine its chemical composition. Three concentrations (1, 5 and 10 μl/ml) were prepared and directly tested on larvae (L4) and pupae under laboratory conditions to measure LC50, LC90, LT50, and LT90 values. The yield obtained in this study was 1.5%. Further, the analysis showed that the oil of A. herba-alba is a davanone chemotype that consists mainly of davanone (48.8%). The efficiency of this essential oil for toxicological parameters (LC50 and LC90) were 3.278 μl/ml and 7.573 μl/ml for larvae, and 1.213 μl/ml and 2.288 μl/ml for pupae. This study indicates that the essential oil of A. herba-alba has toxic properties for Cx. pipiens larvae and pupae. These results are encouraging and open up exciting and promising horizons for its application in the production of bioinsecticides.

Abstract:Abstract We studied the knockdown activity and lethal toxicity of 6 essential oil compounds—methyl salicylate, linalool, 2-phenethyl alcohol, eugenol, &bgr;-citronellol, and trans-cinnamaldehyde—as fumigants against adult female Culex pipiens pallens in the laboratory. Of the 6 products tested, trans-cinnamaldehyde was the most toxic (LC50 = 0.26 µl/l air, 24 h) with a slow knockdown time (KT95 = 176.5 min at 0.5 µl/l air). Methyl salicylate displayed a lower toxicity (LC50 = 1.17 µl/l air, 24 h) but the fastest knockdown activity (KT95 = 16.8 min) at the sublethal concentration 0.5 µl/l air. Furthermore, the binary mixture of methyl salicylate and trans-cinnamaldehyde exhibited a combined effect of fast knockdown activity and high toxicity against Cx. p. pallens adults, showing potential for development as natural fumigants for mosquito control.

Abstract:Plant essential oils have been widely used as fragrance in perfumes or flavouring agents in food products due to their unique characteristic scent of the active constituents. The objective of this study is to qualitatively and quantitatively analyse the repellent activity, and the properties of the bioactive constituents in nutmeg, peppermint, and basil oils. The repellent activity of these essential oils was tested against Aedes aegypti and analysed using gas chromatography-flame ionisation (GC-FID) method. α-pinene, terpinen-4-ol and safrole in nutmeg oil, α-pinene, β-pinene, and menthol in peppermint oil, and methyl chavicol, geraniol, and methyl eugenol in basil oil, were selected for further analysis. Selected constituents were tested for accuracy, intra-and interday precision, recovery, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ). Nutmeg oil contributed to the highest percentage of repellence with 70.2%, with the accuracy values ranged from 99.25 - 99.71%. The precision for intra- and interday measurements for all tested constituents ranged between 1.083 - 7.296% and 1.308 - 7.924% respectively. The range of recovery was 97.43 - 100.86%. LOD ranged from 0.005 - 0.4 mol/L, and LOQ (with signal to noise ratio of 10:1) ranged from 0.0002 - 0.025 mol/L. In conclusion, the proposed method is simple, precise, and accurate, for qualitative and quantitative analysis of constituents present in essential oils. Nutmeg oil is an alternative natural mosquito repellent with α-pinene as the main active constituent.

Abstract:This study was performed to provide data on the chemical composition, skin irritant potential and mosquito repellency of Torreya grandis aril essential oil extracted by hydro distillation. Fifty nine compounds were identified through comparison with reference compounds, tentatively identified by comparing mass spectra and Kovats Index with those reported in mass spectra libraries and literature. Monoterpenes and oxygenated monoterpenes represented more than 80 % of the oil. The oil was characterized by high contents of alpha-pinene (34.20 %), D-limonene (27.58 %), limonene glycol (3.64 %), (E)-carveol (2.50 %) and isoborneol (2.36 %). No positive skin irritant reaction was found within the 15 volunteers exposed to undiluted oil (4-h patch test). Furthermore, the ethanol solutions of the essential oil at several concentrations were tested with arm-in-cage assay for mosquito (Aedes aegypti) repellency. Results showed that the ethanol solutions with essential oil at 12.5 %, 25 %, 50 %, and 100 % (the original undiluted essential oil) provided complete protection of 1.0 +/- 0.5, 5.0 +/- 0.5, 7.0 +/- 1.0, and 7.5 +/- 0.5h for human beings, respectively. These results suggest the promising application of the essential oil in natural mosquito repellent production.

Abstract:Diseases transmitted by vectors such as Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) have been responsible for endemics and epidemics in several countries, causing irreparable damage to human health. For this reason, vector control is one of the main strategies to prevent the contamination and dissemination of these etiological agents. In this study, the essential oil (EO) of Ocimum basilicum was obtained by hydrodistillation, and the compounds were identified by GC/MS. A nanoemulsion was obtained through a low-energy input method and evaluated by photon correlation spectroscopy. Bioassays were performed against 4th instar larvae of A. aegypti and C. quinquefasciatus. Furthermore, additional in silico studies of biological activity prediction and molecular docking for the acetylcholinesterase enzyme and juvenile hormone protein targets were performed with the 53 identified compounds of the EO. The major compounds identified in greater quantity were linalool (32.66%) and anethole (32.48%). The obtained nanoemulsion had an average size diameter between 244.6 and 280.4 nm and a polydispersity index below 0.250 during the entire storage period. The nanoemulsion was tested at concentrations of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mg/L and the following activity values were observed: LC50 = 42.15 mg/L and 40.94 mg/L and LC90 = 50.35 mg/L and 48.87 mg/L for A. aegypti (24 h and 48 h); LC50 = 39.64 mg/L and 38.08 mg/L and LC90 = 52.58 mg/L and 54.26 mg/L for C. quinquefasciatus (24 h and 48 h). The in silico results showed better activity values for linalool, anethole, carvone, α-selinene, eugenol, and limonene. The α-selinene compound showed the best binding affinity with the insect acetylcholinesterase enzyme (−9.1 Kcal) in molecular docking, showing the importance of antagonist compounds in elucidating the mechanism of action for the investigated targets. Thus, the studied nanoemulsion was considered active against the tested species, becoming a potential alternative as an ecological bioinsecticide due to bioactivity and simplicity of formulation.

Abstract:The chemical constituents of hydrodistilled essential oils from the leaves of Litsea umbellata (Lour.) Merr. and Litsea iteodaphne (Ness) Hook. f. growing wild in central Vietnam and mosquito larvicidal activity of these oils against laboratory-reared larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes albopictus were in- vestigated. The major constituents mostly terpenes (percentage abundance, respectively) of the oils were β- pinene (18.8 % and 6.6 %), β-caryophyllene (16.2 % and 21.4 %), α-pinene (10.4 % and 8.7 %) and germacrene D (9.1 % and 15.5 %). The oil of L. umbellata displayed larvicidal activity against Cx. quinquefasciatus with LC 50 of 36.19 μg/mL at both 24 h and 48 h, while LC 50 of 40.09 μg/mL and 27.33 μg/mL at 24 h and 48 h respecti- vely, were exhibited towards Ae. albopictus . Also, an LC 90 value of 54.17 μg/mL was obtained against Cx. quinquefasciatus at both 24 h and 48 h, while values of 68.79 and 60.49 μg/mL respectively, were recorded against Ae. albopictus at 24 h and 48 h. Moreover, the oil of L. iteodaphne exhibited activity against Cx. quinquefasciatus with LC 50 of 37.20 μg/mL (24 h) and 20.21 μg/mL (48 h) while LC 90 values were 39.27 μg/mL (24 h) and 23.78 μg/mL (48 h). Furthermore, L. iteodaphne oil displayed larvicidal activity against Ae. Albopictus with LC 50 values of 40.04 μg/mL (24 h) and 16.63 μg/mL (48 h) as well as LC 90 values of 42.40 μg/mL (24 h) and 23.64 μg/mL (48 h). This is the first report on the chemical composition and larvicidal activity of L. umbellata and L. iteodaphne essential oils.

Abstract:Plant essential oil (EO) is a natural alternative to synthetic chemical insecticides for mosquito control. EOs from Citrus aurantium L., Cymbopogon citratus (Stapf.), and Cinnamomum verum (J. Presl.) were selected for topical assay of their ovicidal activity against Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse). Their efficacy was compared to that of 1% ( w/w ) temephos. In addition, their non-toxicity against aquatic mosquito predators, Poecilia latipinna and Poecilia reticulata , was tested. Found by GC–MS analysis, the major constituent of C . verum EO was trans -cinnamaldehyde, of C . aurantium EO was d -limonene, and of C . citratus EO was geranial. Both C . verum EO and trans -cinnamaldehyde at a high concentration (30,000 ppm) exhibited high ovicidal activity against Ae . aegypti and Ae . albopictus eggs after 48 h of incubation with an inhibition rate of 91.0–93.0% for C . verum EO and 96.7–95.2% for trans -cinnamaldehyde. The combination of C . verum EO + geranial exhibited the strongest synergistic inhibition activity (100%) against the two mosquito vectors and was five times more effective than temephos. Moreover, they were not toxic to the non-target fishes. As a safe ovicidal agent for mosquito egg control, the combination of C . verum EO + geranial has excellent potential.

Abstract:In this study, the chemical composition, repellent, and oviposition deterrent effects of five plant essential oils (EOs) extracted from Lantana camara (Verbenaceae), Schinus terebinthifolia (Anacardiaceae), Callistemon viminalis (Myrtaceae), Helichrysum odoratissimum (Asteraceae), and Hyptis suaveolens (Lamiaceae) were evaluated against Aedes aegypti, Anopheles gambiae, and Culex quinquefasciatus. When tested at 33.3 μg/cm2, L. camara, S. terebinthifolia, C. viminalis, and H. odoratissimum were effective repellents against Ae. aegypti (89%, 91%, 90%, and 51% repellency, respectively), but they were less repellent against An. gambiae (66%, 86%, 59%, and 49% repellency, respectively). Interestingly, L. camara, S. terebinthifolia, C. viminalis, and H. odoratissimum exhibited 100% repellency against Cx. quinquefasciatus at 33.3 μg/cm2. In time-span bioassays performed at 333 μg/cm2, the EO of L. camara exhibited 100% repellence against Ae. aegypti and An. gambiae for up to 15 min and against Cx. quinquefasciatus for 75 min. The oviposition bioassays revealed that L. camara exhibited the highest activity, showing 85%, 59%, and 89% oviposition deterrence against Ae. aegypti, An. gambiae, and Cx. quinquefasciatus, respectively. The major compounds of L. camara, S. terebinthifolia, and C. viminalis were trans-β-caryophyllene (16.7%), α-pinene (15.5%), and 1,8-cineole (38.1%), respectively. In conclusion, the L. camara and S. terebinthifolia EOs have the potential to be natural mosquito repellents.

Abstract:One of the most common ways to prevent mosquito bites is to use treated textiles, which can be used to repel mosquitoes in the form of nets, clothing, uniforms, and other items. Four eco-friendly essential oils: lemongrass ( Cymbopogon citratus ), eucalyptus ( Eucalyptus camaldulensis ), clove ( Dianthus caryophyllus ), and marjoram ( Origanum vulgare ), were evaluated and used to finish polyester fabrics (PE) to give them a pleasant odor and antibacterial properties, as well as mosquito repellent as medical textiles. A low-temperature drying process and thermal stabilization technique were used to bond the polyester to the fragrance-containing compounds. The effect of essential oil finishes on polyester textile properties has been studied using various techniques such as mechanical measurements, contact angle, ultraviolet tests, infrared spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, GC-MS analysis, etc. Scanning electron microscopy showed the physical adsorption of oil on PE surfaces and the penetration of oil droplets between PE fibers. The ability of polyester textiles treated with essential oils of lemongrass, eucalyptus, clove, and marjoram to kill Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger was also tested. Polyester fabrics treated with clove showed the strongest antibacterial effect, surpassing that of eucalyptus oil. 12 essential oils were screened to determine their superiority in repelling mosquitoes at a concentration of 1% through the CDC bottle and WHO cone tests. Cymbopogon citratus (LT 50 = 60.03 min) oil was the most effective against Cx. pipiens , followed by Eucalyptus camaldulensis (LT 50 = 61.65 min) and Dianthus caryophyllus (LT 50 = 64.73 min) with CDC tests. It was found that finishing PE with clove and eucalyptus oils provided 76 and 68% protection from Culex pipiens mosquitoes, even after 6 cycles of washing. This approach is innovative because it meets the goal of having antibacterial, mosquito-repellent, and pleasant-smelling fabrics as requirements for economically viable medical textiles. There is an urgent need to engineer textiles, with or without insecticides, to effectively repel mosquitoes. Our data showed the efficiency of polyester fabric treated with clove and eucalyptus oils in repelling mosquitoes after 6 washings.

Abstract:Essential oils have been tested as insect repellents with moderate results. The most important characteristics of these oils are that they possess a high chemical diversity of compounds, are cheap, and are easily accessible. Recently, mixtures of essential oils have shown a higher repellent activity than a single essential oil, probably by increasing the effectiveness with the number of chemicals in the mixture. The repellent effect of essential oils from citronella (Cymbopogon nardus), mint (Mentha arvensis), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), clove (Eugenia caryophyllata), and their mixture was evaluated against Aedes aegypti. The mixture of citronella, mint, and clove essential oils (1:1:1) was also evaluated in an adulticidal bioassay. Additionally, chemical identification was performed using these commercial essential oils. The 1:1:1 mixture of citronella, mint, and clove essential oils was as effective as the commercial repellent DEET at lower doses (5%), and it is a good candidate for an adulticide at higher doses (20–25%). The chemical constituents of the essential oils were mostly terpenes and oxygenated terpenoids. These findings were discussed in terms of economic and environmental frameworks.

Abstract:Objective To study effective and affordable natural insecticides. Methods The insecticidal activities of essential oil extracts from leaves, barks, fruits and exocarps of eight plants against the susceptible and field strains of the fourth instar larvae of the mosquito Culex pipiens pallens were determined by following the standard World Health Organization larval susceptibility test methods. Results Extract of Ginkgo exocarps is the most toxic, followed by extracts of Cephalotaxaceae and Metasequoia. Other five plants (Chinese Bishopwood, China Tallowtree, China Toona, Eucommia and Fructus Corni) have limited effect against these two strains of Cx. pipiens pallens. Toxicity of extract of Ginkgo exocarps to the eggs, larvae and pupae of the two strains of Cx. pipiens pallens was studied in succession. The most susceptible developmental stage of mosquito is the 1st instar, followed by the 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar. The LC50 values of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instar larvae in susceptible strains are 2.5, 8.6, 13.3 and 18.6 mg/L respectively. The LC50 value of each instar larvae of the field strain is higher than the susceptible strain. The LC50 values of the field strain were 7.4, 15.2, 19.2, and 25.0 mg/L for 1st through 4th instar larvae. The extract of Ginkgo exocarps has no ovicidal activity within 5-100 mg/L while the eclosion of pupae is affected by higher concentration (100 mg/L). Conclusion The insecticidal activities of extracts from the eight plant species may be different. The essential oil of Ginkgo exocarps has noticeable lavicidal property and its use as larvicide against mosquitoes should be explored, as this plant grows abundantly in China.
