Abstract:New inhibitor or inhibitors of nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide-dependent 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (PGDH) activity were found in breast milk but not in powdered milk. Milk samples were obtained manually from 23 puerperae who had delivered at 38 to 41 weeks. The inhibition pattern was competitive and noncompetitive. The percentage of inhibition of PGDH activity kept at 4.0 degrees C increased to a maximum at 12 hours after milk sampling and decreased thereafter. The percentage of inhibition of each milk sample decreased gradually with the duration postpartum. In addition, the inhibitor or inhibitors showed a smaller molecular weight than 1000 daltons and were partially resistant to heat and trypsin. Moreover, they were easily soluble in petroleum ether at various pH values, although the adsorption to C18 cartridge was inadequate. These new factor or factors may increase the benefits of breast feeding.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Rhodiola rosea (R. rosea) is a botanical adaptogen with putative anti-stress and antidepressant properties. Evidence-based data supporting the effectiveness of R. rosea for depression in adults is limited, and therefore a comprehensive review of available animal and human studies suggesting a putative antidepressant action is warranted.PURPOSE: A review of the literature was undertaken to ascertain studies of possible antidepressant mechanisms of action and studies of the safety and effectiveness of R. rosea extracts in animals and adult humans.METHODS: A search of MEDLINE and the Russian state library database was conducted (up to October 2015) on R. rosea.RESULTS: MECHANISM OF ACTION: R. rosea extracts and its purified constituent, salidroside, has been shown to produce a variety of mediator interactions with several molecular networks of neuroendocrine-immune and neurotransmitter receptor systems likely to be involved in the pathophysiology of depression. A wide variety of preclinical in vivo and ex vivo studies with laboratory animals suggests the presence of several biochemical and pharmacological antidepressant-like actions.EFFECTIVENESS: Clinical assessment of R. rosea L. rhizome extracts in humans with various depressive syndromes is based upon results from two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of 146 subjects with major depressive disorder and seven open-label studies totaling 714 individuals with stress-induced mild depression (diagnosed as asthenic syndrome or psychoneurosis). Overall, results of these studies suggests a possible antidepressant action for R. rosea extract in adult humans.SAFETY: In contrast to most conventional antidepressants, R. rosea extract appears to be well-tolerated in short-term studies with a favorable safety profile.CONCLUSIONS: R. rosea demonstrates multi-target effects on various levels of the regulation of cell response to stress, affecting various components of the neuroendocrine, neurotransmitter receptor and molecular networks associated with possible beneficial effects on mood.

Abstract:Rhodiola species, belonging to the family Crassulaceae, have long been used as an adaptogen, tonic, antidepressant, and antistress medicine or functional food in Asia and Europe. Due to the valuable application, the growing demand of Rhodiola species has led to a rapid decrease in resource content. This review aims to summarize the integrated research progress of seven mainstream Rhodiola species. We first outline both traditional and current use of Rhodiola for the treatment of various diseases. A detailed summary and comparison of chemical, pharmacological, toxicological, and clinical studies of various Rhodiola species highlight recent scientific advances and gaps, which gives insights into the understanding of Rhodiola application and would be helpful to improve the situation of biological resources and diversities of Rhodiola plants.

Abstract:Members of the genus Rhodiola L. are perennial herbaceous plants indigenous to high altitudes in the Arctic, throughout the central Himalayan Mountain regions, Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and to the European Alps. Nearly, 84 Rhodiola species (including subspecies and varieties) are recorded worldwide. For thousands of years, Rhodiola species has been in use as an important adaptogen, hemostatic, and tonic in traditional Tibetan medicines (TTM). The review describes the morphological characteristics of Rhodiola species, provides information about their distribution, summarizes the secondary metabolites of R. rosea that is the predominant species screened in efficacy studies, and compares the differences of secondary metabolites among other species such as R. crenulata, R. sachlinesis and R. sacra. Rhodiola L containing numerous active chemical compounds: phenyl propanoids, phenylethanol derivatives, flavanoids, terpenes, and phenolic acids. These compounds have important biological activities, such as adaptogenic/adaptogen, antioxidant, antifatigue, anticancer, postponing ageing, immunomodulatory, cardioprotective, metabolic effects, and antineuronal apoptosis effects.

Abstract:The traditional medicines of Asia and Europe have long used various Rhodiola species, which are endemic to the subarctic areas of the northern hemisphere, as tonic, adaptogen, antidepressant, and anti-inflammatory drugs. In order to establish the therapeutic uses of these plants in modern medicine, the pharmacological effects of Rhodiola sp. have been widely studied. Indeed, the most amply researched species, Rhodiola rosea, has been shown to possess antioxidant, adaptogenic, antistress, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, angiomodulatory, and antitumoral effects. Salidroside (p-hydroxyphenethyl-β-D-glucoside), a major compound in Rhodiola, seems to be responsible for many of the effects observed with Rhodiola extracts.The aim of this paper is to review the pharmacological effects not only of various Rhodiola species, mainly R. rosea along with Rhodiola imbricata, Rhodiola algida, and Rhodiola crenulata, but also of salidroside, focusing especially on its antioxidant, immunomodulatory, antitumoral, and antiproliferative activities, as well as to describe their therapeutic significance in disease management. Although previous pharmacological studies have established a scientific basis for possible therapeutic uses of Rhodiola extracts and salidroside, high-quality, randomized, controlled clinical trials are still needed.

Abstract:Medicinal plants have always been prescribed around the world with therapeutic purposes for various diseases and disorders related to their profile of biologically active substances and health-promoting effects. Meantime, Rhodiola rosea has been of particular importance among physicians, researchers and the general public. Accordingly, the present perspective aimed to explore the beneficial effects of this plant by focusing on in vitro and in vivo studies, and nutritional effects. The current work also provides a comprehensive analysis of the Rhodiola rosea studies in the literature throughout a quantitative literature research analysis approach. The literature search was carried out by means of the Scopus database to retrieve Rhodiola rosea-related publications. VOSviewer software (v.1.6.16, 2020) was used to extract and elaborate bibliometric data. 958 publications ranging from 1966 to 2021 were given by the literature search. Technological prospecting for patents was also assessed.

Abstract:The genus Rhodiola L., an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine and Tibetan medicine in China, exhibits a broad spectrum of applications. This genus contains key compounds such as ginsenosides, polysaccharides, and flavonoids, which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycaemic, immune-enhancing, and anti-hypoxic properties. As a vital raw material, Rhodiola L. contributes to twenty-four kinds of Chinese patent medicines and 481 health food products in China, finding extensive application in the health food sector. Recently, polysaccharides have emerged as a focal point in natural product research, with applications spanning the medicine, food, and materials sectors. Despite this, a comprehensive and systematic review of polysaccharides from the genus Rhodiola L. polysaccharides (TGRPs) is warranted. This study undertakes a systematic review of both domestic and international literature, assessing the research advancements and chemical functional values of polysaccharides derived from Rhodiola rosea. It involves the isolation, purification, and identification of a variety of homogeneous polysaccharides, followed by a detailed analysis of their chemical structures, pharmacological activities, and molecular mechanisms, structure-activity relationship (SAR) of TGRPs. The discussion includes the influence of molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, and glycosidic bonds on their biological activities, such as sulfation and carboxymethylation et al. Such analyses are crucial for deepening the understanding of Rhodiola rosea and for fostering the development and exploitation of TGRPs, offering a reference point for further investigations into TGRPs and their resource utilization.
Low-frequency absorption using a two-layer system with active control of input impedance.

Abstract:Broadband noise absorption, including low frequencies, may be obtained by a hybrid passive-active two-layer system. A porous layer in front of an air layer provides passive absorption, at medium and high frequencies. Active control of the input impedance of the two-layer system yields absorption at low frequencies. The active control system can implement either pressure-release or impedance-matching conditions. A simple analytical model based upon plane waves propagating in a tube permits the comparison of both control strategies. The results of this simple model show that the pressure-release condition affords higher absorption than the impedance-matching condition for some combinations of geometrical and material parameters. Experimental results corroborate the good performance of the pressure-release condition under the prescribed geometrical setup.

Abstract:Due to its rich chemical composition including unique biologically active compounds the gold root (Rhodiola rosea L.) is still of interest to researchers all over the world. However, deficiency of the raw material base and metabolome variability are determination the modern development ways of pharmacologically active substances in vitro obtaining. The article summarizes and systematizes the information about of Rhodiola rosea biologically active compounds obtaining, which are most often obtaining from callus tissues. Callus tissue is usually obtaining from leaf explants, and Murashige and Skoog medium with plant growth regulators in various combinations and concentrations is most commonly used for its induction. At the same time, the tissue growth efficiency and target compounds accumulation depends on the intact plant genotype, the precursors presence of these compounds in the medium, elicitors, as well as external influence factors. Recently, a promising direction is the transgenic hairy roots cultivation, which reveals new aspects of synthesis, accumulation and secondary metabolites production regulation. Biosynthesis genetic regulation of significant secondary metabolites is also a promising direction. Numerous studies have demonstrated that salidroside biosynthesis depends on the expression of the TyrDC gene encoding tyrosinedecarboxylase. Consequently, understanding the molecular and genetic mechanisms opens up opportunities for its regulation and metabolic engineering. In this regard, biotechnological methods may be a priority to obtaining salidroside, rosin and their derivatives at higher or at least comparable levels with wild type or cultivated plants. Among the various biotechnological strategies used to increase the accumulation of salidroside and glycosides of cinnamic alcohol in cells and cultures of Rhodiola organs, the approach with the addition of the metabolic precursors to the nutrient medium proved to be the most effective. In vitro cultures, a significant increase in the production of rosin and its derivatives was observed when precursors (cinnamic alcohol, cinnamic acid and cinnamic aldehyde) were added to the medium.

Abstract:Rhodiola rosea L. (RRL) is a popular plant in traditional medicine, and Rosavin, a characteristic ingredient of RRL, is considered one of the most important active ingredients in it. In recent years, with deepening research on its pharmacological actions, the clinical application value and demand for Rosavin have been steadily increasing. Various routes for the extraction and all-chemical or biological synthesis of Rosavin have been gradually developed for the large-scale production and broad application of Rosavin. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated that Rosavin has a variety of biological activities, including antioxidant, lipid-lowering, analgesic, antiradiation, antitumor and immunomodulation effects. Rosavin showed significant therapeutic effects on a range of chronic diseases, including neurological, digestive, respiratory and bone-related disorders during in vitro and vivo experiments, demonstrating the great potential of Rosavin as a therapeutic drug for diseases. This paper gives a comprehensive and insightful overview of Rosavin, focusing on its extraction and synthesis, pharmacological activities, progress in disease-treatment research and formulation studies, providing a reference for the production and preparation, further clinical research and applications of Rosavin in the future.

Abstract:Golden root (Rhodiola rosea L., Crassulaceae) is a famous medical plant with a one-sided history of scientific interest in the roots and rhizomes as sources of bioactive compounds, unlike the herb, which has not been studied extensively. To address this deficiency, we used high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array and electrospray triple quadrupole mass detection for comparative qualitative and quantitative analysis of the metabolic profiles of Rhodiola rosea organs before and after gastrointestinal digestion in simulated conditions together with various biochemical assays to determine antioxidant properties of the extracts and selected compounds. R. rosea organs showed 146 compounds, including galloyl O-glucosides, catechins, procyanidins, simple phenolics, phenethyl alcohol derivatives, (hydroxy)cinnamates, hydroxynitrile glucosides, monoterpene O-glucosides, and flavonol O-glycosides, most of them for the first time in the species. The organ-specific distribution of compounds found for catechins, procyanidins, and cinnamyl alcohols and glucosides was typical for underground organs and flavonoids and galloylated glucoses concentrated in the herb. Extracts from rhizomes, leaves and flowers showed high phenolic content and were effective scavengers of free radicals (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS•+), O2•−, •OH) and protected β-carotene in a bleaching assay. Digestion in the gastric and intestine phase influenced the composition of R. rosea extracts negatively, affecting the content of catechins, procyanidins, and galloyl glucoses, and therefore, the antioxidativity level. After gut microbiota treatment, the antioxidant capacity of rhizome extract was lower than leaves and flowers due to the aglycone composition found in the colonic phase of digestion. Our study demonstrated that the herb of R. rosea is a rich source of metabolites with high antioxidant properties and could be a valuable plant for new bioactive products.

Abstract:Cardiovascular diseases, also known as circulatory diseases, are diseases of the heart and blood vessels, and its etiology is hyperlipidemia, thick blood, atherosclerosis, and hypertension. Due to its high prevalence, disability, and mortality, it seriously threatens human health. According to reports, the incidence of cardiovascular disease is still on the rise. Rhodiola rosea is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine, which has the effects of antimyocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, lowering blood fat, antithrombosis, and antiarrhythmia. Rhodiola rosea has various chemical components, and different chemical elements have the same pharmacological effects and medicinal values for various cardiovascular diseases. This article reviews the research on the pharmacological effects of Rhodiola rosea on cardiovascular diseases and provides references for the clinical treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract:Rhodiola rosea L. (R. rosea) is an adaptogenic plant increasing body resistance to stress. Its efficacy has been evidenced mainly in chronic stress models, data concerning its effect in acute stress and underlying mechanisms being scarce. The objective was to investigate the effect of repeated doses of a R. rosea hydroethanolic root extract (HRE) on hypothalamic pituitary adrenal response in a murine model of acute mild stress and also the mechanisms involved. Stress response was measured in Balb/c mice having received by gavage HRE (5 g/kg) or vehicle daily for 2 weeks before being submitted to an acute mild stress protocol (open‐field test then elevated plus maze). Corticosterone was measured in plasma from mandibular vein blood drawn before and 30, 60, and 90 min after initiation of the stress protocol. Mice were sacrificed at 90 min, and the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and amygdala were excised for high‐frequency RT‐PCR gene expression analysis. At 30 min after acute mild stress induction, corticosterone level in mice having received the HRE was lower than in control mice and comparable to that in nonstressed mice in the HRE group. HRE administration induced brain structure‐dependent changes in expression of several stress‐responsive genes implicated in neuronal structure, HPA axis activation, and circadian rhythm. In the acute mild stress model used, R. rosea HRE decreased corticosterone level and increased expression of stress‐responsive genes, especially in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. These findings suggest that R. rosea HRE could be of value for modulating reactivity to acute mild stress.

Abstract:Rhodiola rosea L. rhizome has been used as a traditional medicine to treat fatigue, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. We aimed to authenticate R. rosea L. rhizome using the DNA barcoding technique and to quantify its main compounds, total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity, and then to investigate their neuroprotective effects. The sequences of internal transcribed spacer and trnH-psbA of R. rosea L. rhizomes showed a 99% identity with those of NCBI GenBank database according to BLAST searches. Analysis using reversed-phase HPLC revealed five main compounds in R. rosea L. rhizome. Rhodiola rosea L. rhizome and two bioactive compounds, salidroside and tyrosol, showed free radical scavenging activity. Rhodiola rosea L rhizome and its identified compounds protected neuronal PC-12 cells against oxidative stress and showed moderate acetylcholinesterase inhibition. Taken together, these results suggest that R. rosea L rhizomes with bioactives can be used as a functional ingredient with potential for neuroprotection.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Rhodiola rosea L. (Crassulaceae) is a plant that lives at high altitude in Europe and Asia, widely used for its high capacity to increase the organism resistance to different stress conditions. Although a few international literature supports these effects, today R. rosea has become a common component of many dietary supplements also in the Western world. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of the R. rosea roots aqueous extract on in vitro human erythrocytes exposed to hypochlorous acid (HOCl)-oxidative stress. Several damages occur in human erythrocytes exposed in vitro to HOCl, among these membrane protein and lipid modifications, shifting from the discocyte shape to the echinocyte one, and determining lysis ultimately. Therefore, in the present work, the evaluation of the antioxidant capacity of the Rhodiola extract has been carried out by means of scanning electron microscopy and of hemolytic behaviour on human erythrocytes exposed to HOCl in the presence of increasing doses of the aqueous extract in different experimental environments (co-incubation and subsequent incubations). The results obtained are consistent with a significant protection of the extract in presence of the oxidative agent, but a cautionary note emerges from the analysis of the data related to the cell exposition to the plant extract in the absence of any induced oxidative stress. In fact, the addition to erythrocyte of high doses of R. rosea extract always determines severe alterations of the cell shape.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to identify the most productive cenopopulations (CP) of the rare species Rhodiola rosea based on the accumulation of biologically active compounds in the rhizomes in 14 CP from different ecological and geographical conditions of Altai Mountains. The composition and content of 11 components, including salidroside, tyrosol, (+)-catechin, epigallocatechin gallate, rosarin, rosavin, rosin, cinnamyl alcohol, rhodiosin, and rhodionin, were determined by HPLC analysis. The composition of phenolic compounds (PC) in the studied CPs of R. rosea was stable. The amounts of each of the 11 components of the PC and groups of compounds were different in the CPs from different ecological and geographical conditions. The highest and lowest levels of phenylpropanoids (PP) were found in individuals from the Ust-Kan region. These are CP1, from the Baschelaksky ridge, 2000 m above sea level (masl), and CP7 in the Talkash River valley, 1200 m above sea level (4613.1 ± 170.1 and 1362.0 ± 57.0 mg/100 g, respectively). The highest content of PP was found in the samples from seven CPs. Of these, 60% grew in the milder climatic conditions (Ust-Kan region). In terms of individual variability in PC content in two model CPs of R. rosea , a significantly higher content of most PC groups was found in the representatives from more stressful high-mountain conditions (2000 masl) in alpine zone, compared with the same indicators in plants growing at lower altitude in forest zone (1500 masl) (classification of N.I. Preclinical Evidence and Possible Mechanisms of Rhodiola rosea L. and Its Components for Ischemic Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background: Rhodiola rosea L. has long been used as traditional medicines in Europe and Asia to treat a variety of common conditions and diseases including Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular disease, cognitive dysfunctions, cancer, and stroke. Previous studies reported that Rhodiola rosea L. and its components (RRC) improve ischemia stroke in animal models. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis for preclinical studies to evaluate the effects of RRC and the probable neuroprotective mechanisms in ischemic stroke. Methods: Studies of RRC on ischemic stroke animal models were searched in seven databases from inception to Oct 2021. The primary measured outcomes included the neural functional deficit score (NFS), infarct volume (IV), brain water content, cell viability, apoptotic cells, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL)-positive cells, B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) level and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) level. The secondary outcome measures were possible mechanisms of RRC for ischemic stroke. All the data were analyzed via RevMan version 5.3. Results: 15 studies involving 345 animals were identified. Methodological quality for each included studies was accessed according to the CAMARADES 10-item checklist. The quality score of studies range from 1 to 7, and the median was 5.53. Pooled preclinical data showed that compared with the controls, RRC could improve NFS (Zea Longa (p < 0.01), modified neurological severity score (mNSS) (p < 0.01), rotarod tests (p < 0.01), IV (p < 0.01), as well as brain edema (p < 0.01). It also can increase cell viability (p < 0.01), Bcl-2 level (p < 0.01) and reduce TNF-α level (p < 0.01), TUNEL-positive cells (p < 0.01), apoptotic cells (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The findings suggested that RRC can improve ischemia stroke. The possible mechanisms of RRC are largely through antioxidant, anti-apoptosis activities, anti-inflammatory, repressing lipid peroxidation, antigliosis, and alleviating the pathological blood brain barrier damage.

Abstract:A natural "medicine and food" plant, Rhodiola rosea (RR) is primarily made up of organic acids, phenolic compounds, sterols, glycosides, vitamins, lipids, proteins, amino acids, trace elements, and other physiologically active substances. In vitro, non-clinical and clinical studies confirmed that it exerts anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune regulatory effects, balances the gut microbiota, and alleviates vascular circulatory disorders. RR can prolong life and has great application potential in preventing and treating suboptimal health, non-communicable diseases, and COVID-19. This narrative review discusses the effects of RR in preventing organ damage (such as the liver, lung, heart, brain, kidneys, intestines, and blood vessels) in non-communicable diseases from the perspective of predictive, preventive, and personalised medicine (PPPM/3PM). In conclusion, as an adaptogen, RR can provide personalised health strategies to improve the quality of life and overall health status.

Abstract:Rhodiola rosea L. radix (RRL) is one of the most popular medical herb which has been widely used for the treatment of different diseases effectively, including cardiovascular diseases and nerve system diseases. However, due to the multiple compounds in RRL, the underlying molecular mechanisms of RRL are remained unclear. To decipher the action mechanisms of RRL from a systematic perspective, a systems pharmacology approach integrated absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) system, drug targeting, and network analysis was introduced. First, by the ADME screening system and the target fishing process, 56 potential active compounds and 62 targets were obtained, respectively. In addition, compound-target network demonstrated that most compounds interacted with multiple targets, indicating that RRL may enhance its therapeutic effects probably through hitting on multiple targets in a holistic level. Moreover, target-pathway network and gene ontology analysis showed that multiple targets of RRL were involved in several biological pathways, i.e. Neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, calcium signaling pathway, adrenergic signaling in cardiomyocytes, and VEGF signaling pathway, which dissecting the therapeutic effects of RRL on various diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, depression, adaptation diseases, etc. In summary, this work successfully explains the potential active compounds and the multi-scale curative action mechanisms of RRL for treating various diseases; meanwhile, it implies that RRL could be applied as a novel therapeutic agent in arthritic diseases. Most importantly, this work provides an in silico strategy to understand the action mechanisms of herbal medicines from molecular/system levels, which will promote the new drug development of traditional Chinese medicine.

Abstract:ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Rhodiola rosea (golden root) is a unique phytoadaptagen with immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activity. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of the alcohol/water extract of Rhodiola rosea roots in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were used in the study. They were divided in 3 groups (n = 10), treated respectively with saline (controls), Rhodiola rosea extract 50 mg/kg bw and 100 mg/kg bw orally. The antinociceptive effect was evaluated using the hot-plate test, Randall-Sellito test and the formalin test. The hot-plate test evaluates the reaction time of rats which are dropped on a heated surface. The analgesy-meter test exerts a force increased at constant rate. In the formalin test we measured the total time spent in licking the injected paw during the early (0-10 min) and late phase (20-30 min) of test. To study anti-inflammatory effect the carrageenan-induced paw edema was used. The paw volume was measured plethysmometrically at 2, 3 and 4 hours. RESULTS: In the hot-plate test Rhodiola rosea increased in both doses the latency reaction compared with that in the controls. In analgesy-meter test Rhodiola rosea in a dose of 50 mg/kg showed a significant increase of pressure reaction compared with the controls. In the formalin test Rhodiola rosea in a dose of 100 mg/kg significantly decreased the paw licking time during the first phase. In the plethysmometer test Rhodiola rosea extract significantly reduced carrageenan-induced paw edema when compared with the saline-induced edema. CONCLUSION: The studied extract of Rhodiola rosea exhibited significant analgesic activity in all the pain models used - inhibition of thermal pain, mechanical hyperalgesia and formalin-induced pain behavior. Significant anti-inflammatory activity was observed from Rhodiola rosea extract in carrageenan induced paw edema in rats.
