Abstract:In this survey, we discuss volumetric and combinatorial results concerning (mostly finite) intersections or unions of balls (mostly of equal radii) in the $d$-dimensional real vector space, mostly equipped with the Euclidean norm. Our first topic is the Kneser-Poulsen Conjecture, according to which if a finite number of unit balls are rearranged so that the pairwise distances of the centers increase, then the volume of the union (resp., intersection) increases (resp., decreases). Next, we discuss Blaschke-Santaló type, and isoperimetric inequalities for convex sets in Euclidean $d$-space obtained as intersections of (possibly infinitely many) unit balls, which we call spindle convex sets. We present some results on spindle convex sets in the plane, with special attention paid to their approximation by the spindle convex hull of a finite subset. A ball-polyhedron is a convex body obtained as the intersection of finitely many unit balls in Euclidean $d$-space. We consider the combinatorial structure of their faces, and volumetric properties of ball polyhedra obtained from choosing the centers of the balls randomly.

Abstract:Borell's inequality states the existence of a positive absolute constant $C>0$ such that for every $1\leq p\leq q$ $$ \left(\mathbb E|\langle X, e_n\rangle|^p\right)^\frac{1}{p}\leq\left(\mathbb E|\langle X, e_n\rangle|^q\right)^\frac{1}{q}\leq C\frac{q}{p}\left(\mathbb E|\langle X, e_n\rangle|^p\right)^\frac{1}{p}, $$ whenever $X$ is a random vector uniformly distributed in any convex body $K\subseteq\mathbb R^n$ containing the origin in its interior and $(e_i)_{i=1}^n$ is the standard canonical basis in $\mathbb R^n$. In this paper, we will prove a discrete version of this inequality, which will hold whenever $X$ is a random vector uniformly distributed on $K\cap\mathbb Z^n$ for any convex body $K\subseteq\mathbb R^n$ containing the origin in its interior. We will also make use of such discrete version to obtain discrete inequalities from which we can recover the estimate $\mathbb E w(K_N)\sim w(Z_{\log N}(K))$ for any convex body $K$ containing the origin in its interior, where $K_N$ is the centrally symmetric random polytope $K_N=\operatorname{conv}\{\pm X_1,\ldots,\pm X_N\}$ generated by independent random vectors uniformly distributed on $K$ and $w(\cdot)$ denotes the mean width.

Abstract:Let K be a convex body in Rd in which a ball rolls freely and which slides freely in a ball. Let K(n) be the intersection of n i.i.d. random half‐spaces containing K chosen according to a certain prescribed probability distribution. We prove an asymptotic upper bound on the variance of the mean width of K(n) as n→∞ . We achieve this result by first proving an asymptotic upper bound on the variance of the weighted volume of random polytopes generated by n i.i.d. random points selected according to certain probability distributions, then, using polarity, we transfer this to the circumscribed model.

Abstract:The paper contains a survey of the results obtained by the author in recent years. These results concern the application in multivariate polynomial interpolation of some geometric constructions and methods. Widths and rigidity of unconditional sets and random vectors

Abstract:We prove that any unconditional set in $\mathbb{R}^N$ that is invariant under cyclic shifts of coordinates is rigid in $\ell_q^N$, $1\le q\le 2$, i.e. it can not be well approximated by linear spaces of dimension essentially smaller than $N$. We apply the approach of E.D.~Gluskin to the setting of averaged Kolmogorov widths of unconditional random vectors or vectors of independent mean zero random variables, and prove their rigidity. These results are obtained using a general lower bound for the averaged Kolmogorov width via weak moments of biorthogonal random vector. This paper continues the study of the rigidity initiated by the first author. We also provide several corollaries including lower bounds for Kolmogorov widths of mixed norm balls.

Abstract:We study volumes of sections of convex origin-symmetric bodies in $\mathbb{R}% ^{n}$ induced by orthonormal systems on probability spaces. The approach is based on volume estimates of \ John-Löwner ellipsoids and expectations of norms induced by the respective systems. The estimates obtained allows us to establish lower bounds for the radii of sections which gives lower bounds for Gelfand widths (or linear cowidths). As an application we offer a new method of evaluation of Gelfand and Kolmogorov widths of multiplier operators. In particular, we establish sharp orders of widths of standard Sobolev classes $W_{p}^{\gamma }$ in $L_{q}$ in the difficult case, i.e. $% 1<q\leq p\leq \infty $.

On Efficient Approximation of the Maximum Distance to A Point Over an Intersection of Balls

Abstract:In this paper we study the NP-Hard problem of maximizing the distance over an intersection of balls to a given point. We expand the results found in \cite{funcos1}, where the authors characterize the farthest in an intersection of balls $\mathcal{Q}$ to the given point $C_0$ by constructing some intersection of halfspaces. In this paper, by slightly modifying the technique found in literature, we characterize the farthest in an intersection of balls $\mathcal{Q}$ with another intersection of balls $\mathcal{Q}_1$. As such, going backwards, we are naturally able to find the given intersection of balls $\mathcal{Q}$ as the max indicator intersection of balls of another one $\mathcal{Q}_{-1}$. By repeating the process, we find a sequence of intersection of balls $(\mathcal{Q}_{i})_{i \in \mathbb{Z}}$, which has $\mathcal{Q}$ as an element, namely $\mathcal{Q}_{0}$ and show that $\mathcal{Q}_{-\infty} = \mathcal{B}(C_0,R_0)$ where $R_0$ is the maximum distance from $C_0$ to a point in $\mathcal{Q}$. As a final application of the proposed theory we give a polynomial algorithm for computing the maximum distance under an oracle which returns the volume of an intersection of balls, showing that the later is NP-Hard. Finally, we present a randomized method %of polynomial complexity which allows an approximation of the maximum distance.

Abstract:In this paper we completely solve the problem of finding the (upper) approximation order with respect to the Kolmogorov, Gel'fand, and linear widths for the embedding of the Sobolev spaces $W^{\alpha,p}$ and $W_{0}^{\alpha,p}$ in the euclidian measure spaces $L_{\nu}^{q}$ for an arbitrary Borel probability measure $\nu$ with support contained in the open $m$-dimensional unit cube and for all possible choices of $1\leq p,q\leq\infty$. We will determine the exact values for the various upper approximation orders in terms of the $L^{q}$-spectrum of $\nu$ only and finally give sufficient conditions imposed on the regularity of the $L^{q}$-spectrum for the approximation orders to exist. We also elucidate some intrinsic connections between the concept of approximation order and the fractal geometric notion of the upper and lower Minkowski dimension of the support of $\nu$.

Abstract:We study isomorphic properties of two generalizations of intersection bodies, the class of k-intersection bodies and the class of generalized k-intersection bodies. We also show that the Banach-Mazur distance of the k-intersection body of a convex body, when it exists and it is convex, with the Euclidean ball, is bounded by a constant depending only on k, generalizing a well-known result of Hensley and Borell. We conclude by giving some volumetric estimates for k-intersection bodies.

Abstract:Recently the theory of widths of Kolmogorov-Gelfand has received a great deal of interest due to its close relationship with the newly born area of Compressive Sensing in Signal Processing. However fundamental problems of the theory of widths in multidimensional Theory of Functions remain untouched, as well as analogous problems in the theory of multidimensional Signal Analysis. In the present paper we provide a multidimensional generalization of the original result of Kolmogorov about the widths of an "ellipsoidal sets" consisting of functions defined on an interval.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the average Kolmogorov σ–widths and the average linear σ–widths of multivariate isotropic and anisotropic Besov classes in Orlicz spaces and give the weak asymptotic estimates of these two widths. At the same time, we also give the asymptotic property of the optimal recovery of isotropic Besov classes in Orlicz spaces.

A Note on the Hausdorff Distance between Norm Balls and their Linear Maps

Abstract:We consider the problem of computing the (two-sided) Hausdorff distance between the unit $\ell_{p_{1}}$ and $\ell_{p_{2}}$ norm balls in finite dimensional Euclidean space for $1 \leq p_1 < p_2 \leq \infty$, and derive a closed-form formula for the same. We also derive a closed-form formula for the Hausdorff distance between the $k_1$ and $k_2$ unit $D$-norm balls, which are certain polyhedral norm balls in $d$ dimensions for $1 \leq k_1 < k_2 \leq d$. When two different $\ell_p$ norm balls are transformed via a common linear map, we obtain several estimates for the Hausdorff distance between the resulting convex sets. These estimates upper bound the Hausdorff distance or its expectation, depending on whether the linear map is arbitrary or random. We then generalize the developments for the Hausdorff distance between two set-valued integrals obtained by applying a parametric family of linear maps to different $\ell_p$ unit norm balls, and then taking the Minkowski sums of the resulting sets in a limiting sense. To illustrate an application, we show that the problem of computing the Hausdorff distance between the reach sets of a linear dynamical system with different unit norm ball-valued input uncertainties, reduces to this set-valued integral setting.

Abstract:We find two-sided estimates for Kolmogorov, Bernstein, linear and projection widths of the classes of convolutions of $2\pi$-periodic functions $\varphi$, such that $\|\varphi\|_2\le1$, with fixed generated kernels $\Psi_{\bar{\beta}}$, which have Fourier series of the form $\sum\limits_{k=1}^\infty \psi(k)\cos(kt-\beta_k\pi/2), $ where $\psi(k)\ge0,$ $\sum\psi^2(k)<\infty, \beta_k\in\mathbb{R},$ in the space $C$. It is shown that for rapidly decrising sequences $\psi(k)$ (in particular, if $\lim\limits_{k\rightarrow\infty}{\psi(k+1)}/{\psi(k)}=0$) obtained estimates are asymptotic equalities. We establish that asymptotic equalities for widths of this classes are realized by trigonometric Fourier sums.

Abstract:This paper aims at characterizing the approximability of bounded sets in the range of nonlinear operators in Banach spaces by finite-dimensional linear varieties. In particular, the class of operators we consider includes the endpoint maps of nonlinear distributed-parameter control systems. We describe the relationship between the Kolmogorov n-width of a bounded subset and the width of its image under an essentially nonlinear transformation. We propose explicit estimates of the n-width in the space of images in terms of the affine part of the corresponding operator and the width of its nonlinear perturbation. These $n$-width estimates enable us to describe the reachable sets for infinite-dimensional bilinear control systems, with applications to controlling the Euler-Bernoulli beam using a contraction force and to a single-input Schrödinger equation.

The Kolmogorov N-width for linear transport: Exact representation and the influence of the data

Abstract:The Kolmogorov $N$-width describes the best possible error one can achieve by elements of an $N$-dimensional linear space. Its decay has extensively been studied in Approximation Theory and for the solution of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). Particular interest has occurred within Model Order Reduction (MOR) of parameterized PDEs e.g.\ by the Reduced Basis Method (RBM). While it is known that the $N$-width decays exponentially fast (and thus admits efficient MOR) for certain problems, there are examples of the linear transport and the wave equation, where the decay rate deteriorates to $N^{-1/2}$. On the other hand, it is widely accepted that a smooth parameter dependence admits a fast decay of the $N$-width. However, a detailed analysis of the influence of properties of the data (such as regularity or slope) on the rate of the $N$-width seems to lack. In this paper, we use techniques from Fourier Analysis to derive exact representations of the $N$-width in terms of initial and boundary conditions of the linear transport equation modeled by some function $g$ for half-wave symmetric data. For arbitrary functions $g$, we derive bounds and prove that these bounds are sharp. In particular, we prove that the $N$-width decays as ${c_r N^{-r}}$ for functions {with Sobolev regularity} $g\in H^{r{-\varepsilon}}$ for all $\varepsilon>0$ even if $g\not\in H^{r}$. Our theoretical investigations are complemented by numerical experiments which confirm the sharpness of our bounds and give additional quantitative insight.
