Abstract:Root parasitic weeds broomrapes (Phelipanche and Orobanche spp.) cause devastating damages to agricultural production all over the world. The seeds of broomrapes germinate when they are exposed to germination stimulants, mainly strigolactones (SLs), released from roots of any plant species, while broomrapes parasitize only dicot plants. Therefore, monocots can be trap crops for broomrapes, as they induce seed germination but are not parasitized. In this study, we examined two European and one Japanese cultivars of barley for their potentials as trap crops for broomrapes and found that the European cultivars, Sebastian and Golden promise, are good potential trap crops as they produce more SLs and exhibit higher mycorrhizal colonization rates as compared to the Japanese cultivar Shunrai.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the potential of barley as a trap crop for root - parasitic weeds such as plants in the genus *Phelipanche* and *Orobanche*. Specifically, researchers evaluated the potential of these barley varieties as trap crops by comparing the performance of two European barley varieties (Sebastian and Golden Promise) and one Japanese barley variety (Shunrai) in terms of their ability to produce strigolactones (SLs), the activity of inducing broomrape seed germination, and the efficiency of symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. The core question of the paper is: **How can barley be used as a trap crop to reduce the harm of root - parasitic weeds to crops?** ### Main research contents: 1. **The amount of SLs produced**: - The amount of SLs produced by different barley varieties during growth was studied, and it was found that the SLs yields of the European varieties Sebastian and Golden Promise were higher, while the SLs yield of the Japanese variety Shunrai was lower. 2. **The activity of inducing broomrape seed germination**: - The germination - stimulating effect of root exudates of different barley varieties on broomrape seeds (especially *Phelipanche ramosa* and *Orobanche minor*) was tested through experiments. The results showed that the root exudates of the European varieties had a stronger germination - stimulating effect on broomrape seeds. 3. **The symbiosis efficiency with AM fungi**: - The symbiosis efficiency of different barley varieties with AM fungi was compared, and it was found that the symbiosis efficiency of the European variety Sebastian was the highest, while the symbiosis efficiency of the Japanese variety Shunrai was the lowest. 4. **The influence of nutrient deficiency on SLs secretion and tillering**: - The influence of nutrient deficiency (especially the deficiency of phosphorus and nitrogen) on SLs secretion and tillering of barley was studied. The results showed that nutrient deficiency significantly promoted SLs secretion but inhibited tiller formation. ### Conclusions: - The two European barley varieties, **Sebastian and Golden Promise**, are considered potentially excellent trap crops due to their higher SLs yields and stronger ability to induce broomrape seed germination. - The Japanese barley variety **Shunrai** performed poorly, with low SLs yield, weak ability to induce broomrape seed germination, and low symbiosis efficiency with AM fungi. ### Significance: - By using these barley varieties with high SLs yields as trap crops, broomrape seeds can be induced to germinate without being parasitized, thereby reducing the number of broomrape seeds in the soil and alleviating their harm to main crops. This paper provides a new strategy for controlling root - parasitic weeds in agricultural practice and has important application value.
