Abstract:Propiconazole (PCZ) and Tianfengsu (TFS) are widely used plant growth regulators in vegetable production for improving crop growth, quality, and flavor. This study investigated the effects of PCZ and TFS, applied individually or in combination, on the growth, development, flavor quality, and nutritional components of choy sum ( ) and , as well as the underlying molecular mechanisms. The results showed that PCZ inhibited the growth of choy sum and but enhanced the accumulation of flavor compounds such as soluble sugars, proteins, and vitamin C. In contrast, TFS promoted plant growth and increased the content of nutritional components, including chlorophyll and unsaturated fatty acids. Notably, the combined application of PCZ and TFS significantly improved overall plant quality, achieving the optimal balance of flavor and nutritional value while maintaining high yield. Transcriptomic analysis revealed the molecular mechanisms of PCZ and TFS in differentially regulating the expression of brassinosteroid (BR) signaling and downstream metabolism-related genes. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) further identified key gene modules and hub genes controlling flavor metabolism in choy sum. This study elucidates the synergistic mechanisms of PCZ and TFS in regulating vegetable growth and quality formation, providing valuable insights for the safe production of high-quality choy sum and the development of novel plant growth regulators or elite varieties.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses the effects of two plant growth regulators, propiconazole (PCZ) and triacontanol (TFS), on the growth, flavor, and nutritional value of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa), as well as their molecular mechanisms through the brassinosteroid (BR) pathway. The study found that PCZ inhibits the growth of Chinese cabbage but increases the accumulation of soluble sugars, proteins, and vitamin C, thereby improving flavor. In contrast, TFS promotes plant growth, increases photosynthetic pigments and unsaturated fatty acid content, and enhances nutritional composition. When used in combination, they significantly improve the overall quality of plants, achieving an optimal balance between flavor and nutritional value while maintaining high yield. Through transcriptome analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), the researchers revealed key genes and modules that control the flavor metabolism of Chinese cabbage, providing potential targets for the development of novel plant growth regulators or the cultivation of superior varieties. The paper also points out that the molecular mechanism by which PCZ affects vegetable flavor quality through interfering with BR biosynthetic pathways is still unclear, and the interaction between TFS and PCZ in regulating plant architecture and flavor formation needs further investigation. In summary, the paper attempts to address the question of how PCZ and TFS affect the growth, development, flavor, and nutritional value of Chinese cabbage through the BR pathway, and explore the molecular mechanisms behind these effects.
