Abstract:Physical activity (PA) has many benefits in preventing diseases and maintaining physical and mental health. Women, in particular, can benefit from regular PA. However, women's PA did not increase over the past decade globally, and the situations faced by women are often gender-specific. Healthy young adult women's PA does not receive as much attention as older women and adolescent girls, yet, they face the same situation of low level of PA. This review aims to explore and synthesise the self-identified barriers and facilitators to young adult women's participation in PA from qualitative research studies and offer suggestions for future studies and programs designed for this population.

Abstract:The aim of this systematic mixed studies review was to examine how social networks influence physical activity and dietary patterns among African American women. We searched PUBMED, CINAHL, JSTOR, SocioIndex, Medline, Cochrane Library, sportDISCUS, and PsycINFO to review articles published between Jan 1, 2007, and July 1, 2021. Only 23 studies met the inclusion criteria. All studies were conducted in the US. Social support received from family members, friends, and churches was found to positively influence physical activity and/or dietary patterns among African American women. An inconsistent relationship was found between social network size, health behavior characteristics of social networks, and physical activity and/or dietary patterns among African American women. Future research should incorporate structural and functional social network strategies to promote physical activity and healthy eating behaviors effectively and sustainably among African American women.

Abstract:This review aims to identify and characterize physical activity interventions developed to address mental and physical health outcomes among Black breast cancer (BC) survivors. Over 3.8 million BC survivors in the U.S. may experience physical, psychological, and functional symptoms that alter their ability to engage in physical activity. Physical activity for BC survivors is well recognized for managing these cancer-related symptoms and improving quality of life. However, physical inactivity is a public health problem among Black women with BC. Black women experience a 41% higher mortality rate and worse outcomes across all stages of BC than any other racial/ethnic group due to many factors, including psychosocial stressors and disproportionate socioeconomic disadvantages. More research is needed to understand barriers and facilitators among Black BC survivors to engage in physical activity, specifically posttreatment, and to decrease BC disparities. A systematic review was deemed appropriate, and the keywords "breast cancer AND black women AND exercise" were searched using the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO as of May 2024. Studies were selected based on inclusion/exclusion criteria using two reviewers. This review included 19 studies (n=8 descriptive and n=11 experimental) involving 9,691 breast cancer patients, focusing on the mental and physical health outcomes associated with physical activity among Black women. Findings indicate that Black women generally do not meet physical activity guidelines, exhibit lower physical functioning, higher body mass index (BMI), and often live with multimorbidity. Studies were categorized into physical health (BMI, lymphedema, fatigue, muscle strength, physical function, diet, and comorbidities) and mental health (quality of life, emotional well-being, social support, and negative mood). Exercise interventions demonstrated potential for improving physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and muscle strength, with mixed results on quality of life (QOL) and fatigue. Significant associations were found between higher physical activity levels and QOL (n=7). Physical health-related findings included significant associations between physical activity and improved BMI (n=2), decreased lymphedema (n=2), and weight loss (n=1). However, four out of six studies focusing on BMI reported no significant associations with physical activity. An 8-week moderate-intensity exercise intervention led to marginal reductions in fatigue and slight improvements in QOL (P = 0.06) compared to baseline. A high prevalence of obesity, physical inactivity, and suboptimal adherence to physical activity among Black BC survivors from this systematic review highlight the need to develop culturally tailored physical activity interventions to address this public health issue. Specifically, more studies are needed to incorporate more goal setting, motivational techniques, and access to physical/psychosocial resources that address barriers and enhance facilitators to long-term exercise adherence. Abstract:African American women have a high prevalence of atherosclerotic risk factors. Many of these atherosclerotic risk factors can be modified through increased physical activity and a healthy diet. We conducted a phenomenological qualitative study on perceptions of physical activity and healthy eating among 26 African American women, 55 years and older. Interviews were conducted and coded for emerging themes on barriers and facilitators of physical activity and dietary behaviors. Perceived barriers were pain and motivation to be active, limited definition of physical activity, time, preparation, cost of healthy meals, and daily decisions on food choice and preference. Facilitators were a routine of regular physical activity, awareness of healthy food choices, and influence of family. Overall, participants had a general perception about the importance of physical activity and healthy eating; however, their motivation to engage in these behaviors depends on their definition, personal motivation, and food preference.

Abstract:As researchers categorize issues facing Black women's health, obesity and physical exercise continue to be significant topics of debate. General interventions targeted toward Black women to address obesity and increase physical exercise have been largely ineffective. In this article, I situate the current public health discourse on obesity and related interventions within a sociocultural context of body appearance, with a specific focus on hair. Why do some African American women feel such strong ties to their hair that they will avoid exercise? What can be done to understand this phenomenon and address alternatives that may make both hair maintenance and regular exercise feasible? I map a theoretical argument for why hair matters for some women, and discuss how physical activity intervention strategies might be improved by considering such complexities.

Abstract:Despite considerable research and programmatic efforts to alleviate racial/ethnic disparities in physical activity (PA), disparities in PA among older minorities and major racial ethnic groups persist. This study explored perceptions of PA among regularly active (RA) and insufficiently active (IA) older African American women (AAW) and the factors that influence (positively and negatively) their physical participation in their socio-cultural environment. A total of 20 AAW aged 60 to 80 years participated in a cross-sectional mixed-methods study (i.e., qualitative and quantitative) employing participatory research approaches (i.e., photoelicitation) along with an objective assessment of PA. Nine women were considered RA and 11 IA according to current PA recommendations. RA and IA women held two major beliefs about the nature of PA (i.e., PA as a broadly defined construct that goes beyond traditional exercise routines; and PA and exercise are synonymous and can be used interchangeably) and had a good understanding of its benefits. Participants in both groups did not know about the importance of PA intensity for health benefits. Barriers and facilitator of PA were found to be similar among RA and IA participants. Special attention should be paid to providing access to no or low cost opportunities for PA participation in safe environments.
Estimating physical activity trends among blacks in the United States through examination of four national surveys

Abstract:Physical activity is essential for overall good health and aids in the prevention and reduction of many diseases. In 2008, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans to foster appropriate levels of physical activity at various ages of development. Despite these guidelines and the known benefit to being physically active; physical activity levels are significantly lower in Blacks, contributing to higher prevalence of poor health outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to look at four national datasets [Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)] to identify any patterns and trends that could be used to improve physical activity behavior within this population. These national datasets were used to estimate the proportion of Black adults and youth meeting national physical activity recommendations overall-stratified by age, gender and other demographic characteristics, to help identify patterns. The proportion of Black youth reporting regular physical activity ranged from 33% to 52%; and of Black adults, 27% to 52%. Physical activity was highest among men, younger age groups, highest education and income groups, and those who were employed or married. Trends were consistent across surveys. Among Black youth, physical activity decline with increasing grade level, and improvements over the past 10 years have been minimal. The percentage of Black adults achieving physical activity guidelines has improved slightly over the last ten years, but physical activity participation is still low and continues to decline with age. Trends identified from examining these national datasets can be used to inform development of physical activity interventions aimed at promoting and maintaining regular physical activity behavior among high risk subgroups across the life span.
Black Girls as Transformative Leaders in Physical Activity Programs

Abstract:Black American adolescent girls possess a unique ability to inspire and enact change in their communities yet are overlooked in discussions of leadership and empowerment. Coupled with deficit approaches to school-based physical activity programming, positioning Black girls as physical activity leaders is missing from practice. BLinG-HealthTM (Black Leadership in Girls' Health) trained peer leaders in group fitness instruction that was instrumental in an 8-week after-school physical activity pilot program. This paper presents qualitative data illustrating the program's impact on Black girls leading peers in a group fitness setting using general inductive narrative analysis based on group interviews, observations, reflection notes, and faculty leadership testimonials. Participants exuded community, collaboration, and confidence. Peer leadership was effective but differed. Girls recognized the program's benefits and challenges while enjoying it. Black girls can lead physical activity initiatives when allowed to do so while building a community. Researchers and school and community activists should empower Black girls to lead physical activity programs, which can ultimately foster better health outcomes.
Racial Differences in Neighborhood Perceptions and Their Influences on Physical Activity among Urban Older Women

Abstract:Background Proper levels of physical activity (PA) are important to healthy aging. Little is known about racial differences in influences of neighborhood perceptions (NP) on PA and use of neighborhood resources among community-dwelling older women. Materials and methods In 2014 and 2015, 49 white and 44 black women of age 65 and older living in Washington, DC were queried about their PA, NP, use of neighborhood resources and sociodemographic characteristics. They wore an accelerometer and a Global Positioning System device concurrently for 7 consecutive days. Data were analyzed by race. Results Compared to Whites, Blacks had lower NP scores (71% positive vs. 77%, p = 0.01), lower mean daily step counts (mean (SD): 3256 (1918) vs. 5457 (2989), p < 0.001), and lower frequencies of all exercise activities combined (19.7 (8.7) vs. 25.2 (11.8) per week, p = 0.01). For both Whites and Blacks, better NPs were associated with more frequent PA both at (p = 0.05) and away from home (p = 0.01). However, better NPs were associated with higher frequencies of exercise activities, moderate-to-high intensity activities, and utilitarian walking for Whites but not Blacks (p < 0.05 for race-perception interaction terms). Conclusions In an urban setting, older Black women were more likely than older White women to have poor NPs, less PA, and weaker or no association of positive NPs with higher levels of certain PAs. Such substantial racial differences warrant further investigation and consideration in health promotion programs.

Abstract:There is growing recognition that race and socioeconomic variables in health research demand greater attention. The investigators compared racial differences in health definition, health value, and health-promoting behavior of 62 pairs (N = 124) of Black and White college women matched on age, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. Both groups of women had similar definitions of health, valued health to the same extent, and reported similar levels of self-actualization, health responsibility, exercise, and stress management. Black women, relative to White women, practiced fewer nutrition behaviors and had less interpersonal support. Interventions to reduce health risk associated with nutrition practices of Black women are warranted and further research is needed to explore the influence of the social structure of educational institutions on interpersonal relationships and other health behaviors. When socio-economic status is taken into consideration, Black and White college women demonstrated more commonalities in health behavior than differences.

Abstract:African American (AA) women have disproportionately high physical inactivity and obesity prevalence rates in comparison to their gender and racial counterparts. AA women experience unique barriers to leisure-time physical activity (LTPA); however, methods to overcome these barriers are less developed. Therefore, this study used semistructured interviews to explore strategies of young, active AA women that support LTPA maintenance and to identify their psychosocial and behavioral characteristics. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire-long was also administered to provide descriptors of participants’ LTPA. Ten women (age: M = 26.1, SD = 1.7 years) who met national guidelines for aerobic or muscle-strengthening LTPA at least 6 months (aerobic LTPA: M = 2,578.0, SD = 1,228.5 metabolic equivalent-minutes [MET-min]/week; muscle-strengthening physical activity: M = 4.0, SD = 1.9 days/week) completed the study. Four categories emerged from the interviews: (a) early-life contributors to LTPA participation, (b) characteristics of current LTPA, (c) initiating LTPA participation, and (d) maintaining LTPA participation. Findings revealed participants identified weightlifting as a preferred type of LTPA, identified various planning/preparation methods to overcome LTPA challenges, and relied on social media to initiate and maintain LTPA. This study identified several strategies used by young AA women to maintain regular LTPA and program preferences. These data are important in this understudied group as similar strategies may help inactive young AA women overcome LTPA challenges and promote long-term adherence. This could help prevent health and physical activity disparities in this population.

Abstract:Promoting individuals' participation in physical activity (PA) holds significant significance in the field of public health due to the demonstrated preventative impact on diverse metabolic disorders, such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. There is a lack of research on how race and ethnicity affect people's propensity to exercise and how to best encourage them to get moving. However, the research that is currently available suggests that a sizeable percentage of African American (AA) Youths do not achieve the levels of PA that are suggested. The primary objective of this study is to give a preliminary examination of the demographic features and health disparities that are experienced by AA adolescents. Additionally, it aims to explore the various factors influencing their engagement in PA and propose viable interventions to address these issues.

Abstract:Background Health care inequities have partially contributed to the existing racial gaps in health. Despite having lower incidence rates of breast cancer, Black women have a 41% higher mortality rate than White women. Black individuals remain underrepresented in research. Diversity in research is paramount to the improvement of clinical care practices and subgroup‐specific guidelines. Methods Black women from various community venues across geographic regions of the United States were invited via email, online fliers, social media platforms, and word of mouth to participate in focus groups. Six online focus groups of six to 10 Black women aged 25–65 years (N = 38) with and without a history of cancer were conducted with an in‐depth semistructured discussion guide. Results Most participants were college educated (32 of 38; 84.2%), aged 50 years or older (31 of 38; 81.6%), and had an annual income of $50,000 or more (26 of 38; 68.4%). Several barriers to research participation were identified. They included a lack of empathy and respect in health care settings, apprehension regarding the sharing of personal information, mistrust of medical research, and logistical/technical barriers. Alternatively, building individual and community trust and communicating the value of conducting research beneficial to the Black community were viewed as facilitators to research participation. Conclusions Successful engagement of Black women in research requires the acknowledgment and consideration of the numerous barriers that affect their ability to participate. Black women are more inclined to participate in research when the research team is knowledgeable, has experience within their communities, and engages trusted community partners. Additionally, the research must be meaningful and impactful to future generations of Black women.

Background: Exercise is a safe and beneficial way of improving physical and psychological well-being in postpartum people; yet, postpartum people are less likely to meet the recommended guidelines for physical activity. Identifying the barriers to exercise in the postpartum period may assist health care professionals to better understand how to counsel this population on strategies for exercise. Objective: To synthesize the current literature on barriers to exercise in postpartum people. Study Design: A mixed-methods systematic review. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and CINAHL databases of both qualitative and quantitative studies that examined the barriers to exercise among postpartum people. The articles were selected on the basis of predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Downs and Black Checklist of Methodological Quality was used to assess study quality. Results: Ten studies met the inclusion criteria (7 qualitative and 3 quantitative). Barriers were categorized into the following categories: intrapersonal, interpersonal, sociocultural/demographic, physical environment, and health care environment. The most reported barriers in each category were tiredness and/or lack of sleep (7 out of 10 mentioned), time and/or unpredictable routines/schedule and busy with domestic chores/care/responsibilities (both 8 out of 10 mentioned), lack of support from family, friends, and other mothers (9 out of 10 mentioned), weather (7 out of 10 mentioned), and breastfeeding (3 out of 10 mentioned), respectively. Conclusion: Physical therapists and other health care professionals should be aware of the major reported barriers to exercise among postpartum people, as this will help guide them in providing meaningful education and counseling strategies to increase exercise in this unique population. Further research is needed to capture a more diverse group of postpartum people, as well as considering how policy may affect exercise postpartum.

Abstract:Aim. To explore how Black African international students adjust to their new university environment and gain insight into how they feel supported to engage in physical activity (PA). Background. People from ethnic minority backgrounds have poor physical activity levels compared with white populations in the UK. The Black population is known to have the lowest PA levels among the ethnic minority groups in the UK. This trend is suggested to be the case among university students, but no research has examined this. Ethnic minority students, including international students, encounter adaptation difficulties such as cultural barriers and social isolation which affect their university experiences and health behaviours such as physical activity. Methodology. This was a qualitative method, with in‐depth semistructured interviews conducted with five African students (two males and three females) aged between 21 and 40 years from a university in the West Midlands. The transcribed interviews were analysed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis. Results/Findings. Culture and lifestyle of physical activity; knowledge, experience, and self‐motivation; the effect of various social groups, activities, and services at the university; and weather variations and physical settings were the identified themes. The key finding of the study is that respondents engaged in PA to a greater extent at the British university than they did in their home countries. This was due to a combination of factors, including low‐cost gym memberships and events and a general lack of racial or gender‐based discrimination. Conclusions/Recommendations. Participants expressed satisfaction with the cultural and social support systems at their university, such as sports clubs and societies, and mental health support services that encouraged them to learn about and engage more in physical activity. Although some barriers, such as weather variations, were mentioned, various indoor options coupled with cheaper gymnasiums motivated students to remain or become active. Understanding the experiences of minority student groups in physical activity could help in reviewing current provisions and extending them to a wider population.

Abstract:Objective: Black Feminism and Womanism offers an interdisciplinary lens and practice to center Black women's health, engage relevant health, and create Black women-informed solutions to address obesity. The purpose of this review article is to employ Black Feminism and Womanism to examine approaches and results of Black women-centered behavioral weight loss interventions. Methods: A narrative review of Black women-centered behavioral weight loss interventions was conducted. To be included, articles met the following criteria: published between 2012 and 2022, standard behavioral treatment for weight loss, randomized design, weight loss outcomes stratified by race and gender, sample size of at least 75 individuals, adults at least 18 years of age, and at least 51% Black women in the sample. Results: Eight studies met the inclusion criteria for a Black women-centered behavioral weight loss intervention and were evaluated. Findings indicate that weight loss among Black women was mostly low, below the clinical target of 5 to 10% weight loss. Intervention designs ranged widely in their approach to respond to the context of Black women's lives, with little consistency between designs. Conclusions: To make meaningful improvement in the effectiveness of behavioral weight loss interventions for Black women, new approaches are critical. Approaches grounded in Black Feminism and Womanism can provide the essential foundation to generate new knowledge, novel hypotheses, and intervention designs that fully attend to the lived context of Black women, including consideration of the potential health effects of gendered racism.

Abstract:Physical activity has cultural significance and population health benefits. However, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults may experience challenges in participating in physical activity. This mixed methods systematic review aimed to synthetize existing evidence on facilitators and barriers for physical activity participation experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults in Australia. The Joanna Briggs Institute methodology was used. A systematic search was undertaken of 11 databases and 14 grey literature websites during 2020. The included studies reported physical activity facilitators and barriers experienced by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander participants aged 18+ years, living in the community. Twenty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Sixty-two facilitators were identified: 23 individual, 18 interpersonal, 8 community/environmental and 13 policy/program facilitators. Additionally, 63 barriers were identified: 21 individual, 17 interpersonal, 15 community/environmental and 10 policy/program barriers. Prominent facilitators included support from family, friends, and program staff, and opportunities to connect with community or culture. Prominent barriers included a lack of transport, financial constraints, lack of time, and competing work, family or cultural commitments. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults experience multiple facilitators and barriers to physical activity participation. Strategies to increase participation should seek to enhance facilitators and address barriers, collaboratively with communities, with consideration to the local context.

Abstract:In the United States, non-Hispanic Black adolescents have a significantly higher prevalence of obesity than their peers. Though physical activity (PA) has many benefits, many adolescents fail to engage in adequate amounts of PA. Black adolescents are also more sedentary than those from other races and ethnicities.
