Abstract:Autoimmune disorders involve diverse symptomatic manifestations constituting an abnormal or exaggerated immune function and serve to attack self-antigens and result in tissue destruction. This study aims to comprehensively analyse the prevalence, type, associative factors, and the resultant impact of ocular symptoms on patients presented to rheumatology departments of multi-center tertiary care hospitals in Lahore. Methods. A total of 300 patients were studied during the time frame of Jan 2021-Dec 2022. Results. Rheumatoid Arthritis comprised 45.7 % (n=137) of patients, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) was present in 34.3% (N=103) patients. Spondylarthritis 8.3%, Granulomatous Polyangiitis 3.3%, Juvenile idiopathic arthritis 0.7%, and Bechet Disease 2.3% were present. The total number of patients who developed eye manifestations was 18%. Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca was observed in 4 females and 2 males with overall frequency of 11.1%. Conclusions. Our study showed a surge in the cases of SLE diagnosed and witnessed during the period of 2022, but our study showed an overall decrease in the incidence of eye complications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the common ocular manifestations and their impact on patients with Rheumatic Autoimmune Diseases (ARDs). Specifically, the study aims to comprehensively analyze the prevalence, types, associated factors, and impact of ocular symptoms among patients visiting rheumatology departments in multiple tertiary hospitals in Lahore, Pakistan. ### Main Content Overview: - **Research Background**: Autoimmune diseases involve a variety of symptoms, constituting abnormal or excessive immune function, and leading to tissue damage. Approximately 80 different autoimmune diseases have been identified globally, with women being the primary affected group. This study particularly focuses on the extra-articular effects related to "rheumatoid factor," including Behçet's disease, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Dermatomyositis (DM), Vasculitis, Sjögren's Syndrome, and Polymyositis (PM). - **Research Objective**: The objective of the study is to explore the relationship between rheumatic autoimmune diseases and their ocular manifestations, particularly among patients in the Lahore region. - **Research Methods**: This study is a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted at Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Lahore, with data collection spanning from January 2021 to December 2022. The study sample includes 300 patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases. - **Results**: Among the 300 patients, Rheumatoid Arthritis accounted for 45.7%, and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus accounted for 34.3%. The proportion of patients with ocular manifestations was 18%, with Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca being the most common, accounting for 11.1%. - **Conclusion**: The study shows an increase in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus cases during 2022, but overall, the incidence of ocular complications has decreased. Rheumatoid Arthritis is the most common rheumatic autoimmune disease, while Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca is the most common ocular complication. Through this study, the authors hope to better understand the clinical characteristics of these diseases and their specific impact on ocular health, thereby providing a basis for future diagnosis and treatment.
