Abstract:We recorded sunlight intensity at anthesis of 390 rice landraces flowering in short-day season, and find that flower opening time (FOT) is delayed but flower exposure duration (FED) is shortened on cloudy days (<30000 lux). These results construe a reversal of the effect previously reported from a larger set of 1114 landaces (including the 390 landraces in this study), recorded during short-day and long-day seasons over 3 years. To resolve this Simpson’s paradox, we subsequently recorded solar illuminance at FOT of 25 landrace populations, half of which was open to direct sunlight, compared to another half under shade. This experiment revealed that low sunlight intensity, mimicking cloudy days, significantly delays FOT, corroborating the pattern detected in our earlier findings. However, experimental shading has an indeterminate effect on FED of the same landraces. We hypothesize that the delayed FOT on overcast days is an adaptation in rice plants in anticipation of rain, for protection of the pollen from rainwash.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the impact of sunlight intensity on the rice flower opening time (FOT) and flower exposure duration (FED). Specifically, through observation and experiments, the researchers aim to understand whether there are significant differences in the flower opening time and flower exposure duration of rice varieties under different light conditions (sunny days and cloudy days), and whether these differences have an impact on the pollination process of rice. ### Research Background - **Biology of Rice Flowering**: The flower opening time (FOT) and flower exposure duration (FED) of rice are crucial to its pollination process. The FOT and FED of different rice varieties are affected by multiple environmental factors, such as photoperiod, light conditions, and temperature. - **Deficiencies in Existing Research**: Although it is known that light intensity has an impact on the rice flower opening time, there is a lack of systematic research to quantify this impact, especially the specific performance under natural conditions (such as sunny days and cloudy days). ### Research Methods - **Field Observation**: The researchers recorded the flower opening time (FOT), flower closing time (FCT), flower exposure duration (FED), and sunrise - to - anthesis duration (SAD) of 388 local rice varieties (a total of 420 populations) during the short - day season in 2022. - **Experimental Design**: During the same short - day season, 26 rice varieties were selected for the experiment. Half were exposed to natural light (OL), and the other half were placed under shaded conditions (SH) to simulate the low - light environment on cloudy days. - **Statistical Analysis**: Non - parametric tests (such as the Wilcoxon - Mann - Whitney test) and permutation tests were used to evaluate the differences in FOT and FED under different light conditions. ### Main Findings - **Impact of Light Intensity on SAD**: On sunny days (light intensity ≥ 40,000 lux), the SAD of rice is significantly shorter than that on cloudy days (light intensity < 40,000 lux). This difference is statistically very significant (p < 0.0001). - **Impact of Light Intensity on FED**: There is no significant difference in FED between sunny days and cloudy days (p > 0.9). This indicates that light intensity mainly affects the flower opening time and has less impact on the flower exposure duration. - **Experimental Verification**: In the experiment, the SAD of rice under shaded conditions is significantly longer than that under natural light conditions (p < 0.0001), further confirming the impact of light intensity on SAD. ### Conclusions - **Impact of Light Intensity on Rice Flowering Time**: Low light intensity (such as on cloudy days) will significantly delay the rice flowering time and prolong the sunrise - to - anthesis duration (SAD). - **Adaptation Mechanism**: The researchers speculate that the delay in rice flowering on cloudy days may be to protect pollen from being washed away by rain, which is an adaptive mechanism. This research not only enhances the understanding of rice flowering biology but also provides an important reference for rice breeding, especially in the selection of rice varieties suitable for specific light conditions.
