Abstract:Background Urban populations usually have higher levels of cardiovascular risk factors than rural populations in developing countries. However, association between cardiovascular risk factors and duration of urban dwelling, particularly for early stages of urban migrations, has not yet been adequately studied. We examined cardiovascular risks in relation to timing of urbanization in Thailand, paying attention to recent internal migrants. Methods Our study base was a large national cohort (n = 87 151) of distance-learning Thai open university students recruited in 2005 and followed up in 2009. After exclusion of longitudinal dropouts and reverse migrants, 51 936 remained for analyses. The information collected included historical residence, urban migration and its lifecycle timing, self-reported doctor-diagnosed diseases, and socio-demographic and personal attributes that could influence health. To relate cardiovascular outcomes (prevalence and incidence of hypertension and hyperlipidaemia) and life-course urbanization status (ie at age 12, 4 years ago [2005] and at present [2009]), we applied logistic regression. Included in the models were 10 other covariates that could confound the urbanization effect. Results Recent migration (arriving within four years) among young cohort members (born after 1980) was associated with higher risk of hypertension (OR 1.80 for prevalence and 1.68 for four-year incidence). Higher hyperlipidaemia prevalence (and incidence) was associated with any urban dwelling. Recent migrants quickly developed hyperlipidaemia, particularly the youngest (born after 1980) and oldest participants (born before 1960). Conclusions Increased cardiovascular risks appear among rural-urban migrants within four years after they arrive. Given the scale of continuing urbanization, interventions are needed to support and educate recent migrants in Thai cities.
A threshold for charge transfer in aromatic interactions? A quantitative study of pi-stacking interactions

Abstract:[structure: see text] Attractive interactions between substituted arenes in the parallel displaced configuration have been quantitatively studied using triptycene-derived molecular conformational reporters. Charge-transfer bands are observed for models where the interactions are between strong donor and acceptors. Substituent effects on the strength of the aromatic interaction follow opposite trends for strongly electron-deficient arenes and mildly perturbed arenes. The free energy of interactions for models with strong electron donors and acceptors does not follow a linear correlation in the Hammett plot. Electrostatic models alone do not account for the nonlinearity of the free energy-substituents plot.
Substituent and heteroatom effects on parallel-displaced pi-stacking: Further evidence that short-range pi-pi interactions are not under electrostatic control

Abstract:Stacking interactions are a recurring motif in supramolecular chemistry and biochemistry, where a persistent theme is a preference for parallel-displaced aromatic rings over face-to-face pi-stacking. The Hunter-Sanders model purports to explain this preference in terms of quadrupolar electrostatics but that interpretation is inconsistent with accurate quantum-mechanical calculations. Here, we apply symmetry-adapted perturbation theory to dimers composed of substituted benzene and to dimers of heterocycles including pyridine, pyrimidine, triazine, and thiophene. These systems display a wide range of electrostatic interactions, allowing us to investigate the generality of an alternative explanation for offset pi-stacking in which this phenomenon is driven by competition between Pauli repulsion and dispersion, not by electrostatics. Profiles of energy components along cofacial slip-stacking coordinates support this "van der Waals" model, even in cases where dipolar forces are significant. We find no evidence to support continued invocation of the Hunter-Sanders or quadrupolar electrostatics model. Our results suggest that chemical substitutions that primarily affect electrostatic interactions are unlikely to alter the short-range driving forces that contribute to offset-stacking. This has implications for rational design of soft materials and other supramolecular architectures.

Differentiation Of Cation-Pi Bonding From Cation-Pi Intermolecular Interactions: A Quantum Chemistry Study Using Density-Functional Theory And Morokuma Decomposition Methods

Abstract:A strong interaction called cation-pi bonding, which we named because it occurs between aromatics and divalent metal cations, has been successfully differentiated from the normal cation-pi intermolecular interactions. Our findings were based on the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) calculations and Morokuma decomposition analyses on the complexes formed by substituted benzenes with alkaline metal and alkaline earth metal ions. In comparison with the common cation-pi intermolecular interaction, the cation-pi bond in the complexes of either Be2+ or Mg2+ with the aromatics has its own characteristics: (a) short bond lengths, (b) very strong binding strength, (c) significant nonelectrostatic interaction that constitutes more than 50% of the total binding strength, (d) obvious cation-pi orbital interaction, and (e) special orbital interaction pattern that only the pi orbitals of the aromatics interact with the s, p(x), and p(y) atomic orbitals of metal cations for forming bonding MOs. While the electrostatic interaction is significantly affected by the nature of the substituents attached to the benzene, the nonelectrostatic interaction and orbital interaction are not. Furthermore, the total binding strength and electrostatic interaction are well correlated with the Hammett electronic parameters. This structural and thermochemical information is highly useful in identifying cation-pi bonds. Moreover, they are equally helpful for modifying current force fields in reproducing this unusual chemical bond that is commonly encountered in both chemical and biological systems.
Conformational Preferences of Π–π Stacking Between Ligand and Protein, Analysis Derived from Crystal Structure Data Geometric Preference of Π–π Interaction

Abstract:π–π Interaction is a direct attractive non-covalent interaction between aromatic moieties, playing an important role in DNA stabilization, drug intercalation, etc. Aromatic rings interact through several different conformations including face-to-face, T-shaped, and offset stacked conformation. Previous quantum calculations indicated that T-shaped and offset stacked conformations are preferred for their smaller electron repulsions. However, substitution group on aromatic ring could have a great impact on π–π interaction by changing electron repulsion force between two rings. To investigate π–π interaction between ligand and aromatic side chain of protein, Brookhaven Protein Data Bank was analyzed. We extracted isolated dimer pairs with the aim of excluding multiple π–π stacking effects and found that T-shaped conformation is prevalent among aromatic interaction between phenyl ring of ligand and protein, which corresponds with the phenomenon of Phe–Phe interactions in small peptide. Specifically, for the non-substitution model, both Phe–Phe and Phenyl–Phe exhibit a favored T-shaped conformation whose dihedral angle is around 50°–70° and centroid distance is between 5.0 and 5.6 Å. However, it could be changed by substituent effect. The hydroxyl group could contact in the case of Tyr–Tyr pairs, while they point away from phenyl plane in Phe–Tyr pairs.
Quantum chemical explanation and APT atomic charge index of substituent orienting effect proposed by DFT calculation and MO Theory

Abstract:The DFT calculation provides a quantum chemical explanation for the substituent orienting effects of substituted benzene molecules. Substituent can split the two degenerate HOMOs in benzene molecule C6H6 to HOMO and HOMO‐1, which is the origin of substituent orienting effect. The study found that APT atomic charges are a good judgment index of substituent orienting effect because the charges represent the number of active electrons on the benzene ring carbons. The orienting effects of a large number of substituents have been verified by APT charge data. In organic chemistry textbooks, the electron resonance states are used to explain the orienting effect of benzene substituent. However, these resonance states do not exist in the C6H5‐S + E+ electrophilic addition, so the resonance state discussions actually are meaningless. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that the C6H5‐S + E+ addition follows the transition state theory and needs to overcome a barrier. Benzene molecule C6H6 has two degenerate highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs), but after becoming substituted benzenes, the two HOMOs split to HOMO and HOMO‐1 with different orbital energies and electron distributions. It makes the addition barrier on two or three benzene ring carbons is low, and the addition rate is fast, but the barrier of other carbons is high, and the rate is slow. Therefore, substituent splits the two degenerate HOMOs of benzene molecule, which is the origin of substituent orienting effect. For the substituted benzenes with halogen group ‐X and electron‐releasing group, their HOMO images alone can determine that the two types of substituents are the ortho‐ and para‐orienting groups, but for the substituted benzenes with electron‐withdrawing group, their HOMO alone cannot determine whether the substituent is a meta‐orienting group. The study found that atomic polar tensor (APT) charges are a good judgment index of substituent orienting effect because based on its physic‐chemical model, the charges represent the number of active electrons on the benzene ring carbons. The DFT calculation gives the APT charges of 19 mono‐substituted and 12 di‐substituted benzenes and some aromatic molecules. The APT charges can all correctly determine their orienting effects, showing that APT atomic charge from quantum theoretical calculation is a good substituent orienting index.

pi-pi Stacking between Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon Sheets beyond Dispersion Interactions

Abstract:High level ab initio calculations ranging from coupled cluster methods including explicitly correlated approaches to standard second order Møller-Plesset theory using spin scaling (SOS-MP2) have been performed on sandwich and slipped parallel dimer structures of a series of quasi one-dimensional acenes and on two-dimensional sheets containing the series pyrene to coronene encircled with two layers of benzene rings. Sandwich (graphitic AA type) and slipped parallel (AB type) structures were considered and, within given symmetry restrictions, full geometry optimizations were performed. Basis set superposition effects have been considered. The computed geometries show a significant biconcave deviation of the twodimensional sheets from planarity with the central intersheet C...C distances considerably smaller that van der Waals distances. The computed intersheet binding energy per carbon atom extrapolated for N ->$\infty$ of -74.3 meV (1.713 kcal/mol)/atom agrees quite well with the experimental defoliation energy of -52 meV (1.199 kcal/mol)/atom (-67 meV (1.545 kcal/mol)/carbon atom without corrections for H binding contributions) for polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from graphite. A limited investigation of density functional theory (DFT) calculations using empirical dispersion contributions has been performed also showing a significant underbinding character of the D3 method. For most of the DFT variants investigated the graphene sheet models retain a quasi-planar structure in strong contrast to the aforementioned SOS-MP2 results.

Cis-regulatory logic in the endo16 gene: switching from a specification to a differentiation mode of control.

Abstract:The endo16 gene of Strongylocentrotus purpuratus encodes a secreted protein of the embryonic and larval midgut. The overall functional organization of the spatial and temporal control system of this gene are relatively well known from a series of earlier cis-regulatory studies. Our recent computational model for the logic operations of the proximal region of the endo16 control system (Module A) specifies the function of interactions at each transcription factor target site of Module A. Here, we extend sequence level functional analysis to the adjacent cis-regulatory region, Module B. The computational logic model is broadened to include B/A interactions as well as other Module B functions. Module B drives expression later in development and its major activator is responsible for a sharp, gut-specific increase in transcription after gastrulation. As shown earlier, Module B output undergoes a synergistic amplification that requires interactions within Module A. The interactions within Module B that are required to generate and transmit its output to Module A are identified. Logic considerations predicted an internal cis-regulatory switch by which spatial control of endo16 expression is shifted from Module A (early) to Module B (later). This prediction was confirmed experimentally and a distinct set of interactions in Module B that mediate the switch function was demonstrated. The endo16 computational model now provides a detailed explanation of the information processing functions executed by the cis-regulatory system of this gene throughout embryogenesis. Early in development the gene participates in the specification events that define the endomesoderm; later it functions as a gut-specific differentiation gene. The cis-regulatory switch mediates this functional change.
Direct measurement of electric-field-induced birefringence in a polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal composite.

Abstract:We demonstrate a method to directly measure the electric-field-induced birefringence of a polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal (PS-BPLC) composite. The induced birefringence follows the extended Kerr effect well and is approximately 3X the ordinary refractive index change. The measured data are validated by comparing the simulated and measured voltage-dependent transmittance with an in-plane switching cell. The impact of these results to the material optimization of emerging BPLC displays is discussed.

Abstract:The effects of selected substituent groups (-CH 3 , -Br, -CO 2 CH 3 , -COOH, and -NH 2 ) and their relative positions on the electronic and structural properties of mono-substituted naphthalenes were investigated theoretically. In order to elucidate the suitability of the studied substituents in different fields including chemistry, spectroscopy, and materials sciences, accurate DFT calculations were performed at the dispersion-corrected B3LYP level of theory (B3LYP-D3/6–311 + + G(d,p)), and the obtained results were then validated by extensive comparisons with available experimental data. Among the studied substituents, the -NH 2 group causes the maximum reduction of the HOMO–LUMO energy gap. This result revealed clearly the suitability of the -NH 2 group, compared to other studied substituents, in the chemical synthesis of future organic-semiconductors having small energy gaps. In addition, the level of theory adopted in this study allowed the fine discrimination between the chemical reactivity parameters of the studied congeners, which is very difficult to perform experimentally. On the other hand, the rotational barriers of the studied non-halogen substituent groups were predicted. The greater sensitivity of the rotational barrier heights to the local environments, arising from intra-molecular interactions, was attributed to the -CH 3 group. The torsional frequencies, calculated within the harmonic approximation, were also employed to relatively explore the differences between the environments of the same substituent at two different positions. The usefulness of these results can be manifested in the vibrational spectroscopy field, especially, for the IR/ Raman spectral analysis of polycyclic-aromatic congeners.

Abstract:An exceptional example of multiple C–H···π(alkyne) contacts has been discovered in the crystal packing of the syn-diastereomeric conformer of 1,2-di(7'-methoxynaphth-1'-yl)-3,6-di(4''-n–propylphenylethynyl)benzene (syn-1). In contrast, the chiral crystal of anti-1, derived from the racemic mixture via spontaneous resolution, predominantly features conventional C–H···π(arene) contacts. The comprehensive analysis of the C–H···π contacts in the crystal packings of 1 was conducted using Hirshfeld surface, van der Waals crust, and quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM) methods. The electron density at the bond critical points (σBCP) along the bond path in the C–H···π contacts exhibits a moderate correlation with the dimensionless penetration index (pCH). This finding unveils the essentially identical characteristics of the C–H···π interactions, irrespective of the sp- and sp2-carbons. The C–H···π(alkyne) contacts are almost statistically populated within the range of pure van der Waals interaction, whereas the C–H···π(arene) contact exhibits a slight deviation from the criteria. The crystal structure of syn-1 exemplifies an exceptional formation of the multiple C–H···π(alkyne) contacts, contrasting with the generally rare occurrence of C–H···π(alkyne) interactions.

Abstract:Substituent size and isomerization play an important role in the polymorphism of 2-(naphthalen- n -ylamino)-benzoic acids ( n = 1, 2; 2-NBAs) as each of the two previously investigated 2-NBAs was found to be polymorphic, while their parent compound fenamic acid (FA) has only one form discovered. 2-(Naphthalen-1-ylamino)-nicotinic acid ( 1 ) and 2-(naphthalen-2-ylamino)-nicotinic acid ( 2 ) (2-NNA) are isosteric compounds of 2-NBAs, and 2-(2,3-dimethyl-phenylamino)-nicotinic acid ( 3 ) and 2-(3,4-dimethyl-phenylamino)-nicotinic acid ( 4 ) are 2-NNA analogues with similar substitution patterns. All four compounds are clonixin analogues. The polymorphism of these four compounds was investigated. One solvent-free form ( 1 -A ) and one hydrate ( 1 -H ) were discovered for 1 , three forms ( 2 -I , 2 -II , and 2 -III ) were obtained for 2 , and one form was found for 3 and 4 . The four systems were characterized by single-crystal XRD (SCXRD) and powder XRD (PXRD), and structural properties were compared among the crystals of the four compounds, their isosteres, and other related analogues. The phase behavior of the four systems was studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to investigate the dehydration of 1 -H . Computational studies such as stable conformer search, π–π interaction energy calculation, and non-covalent interaction (NCI) analysis were performed to shed light on the rise of polymorphism, and the relative contribution of various intermolecular interactions to the overall stability of the crystals. The study confirmed the effect of substituent size, thus the consequent π–π interactions, on the hydrate formation of compound 1 and polymorphism of compound 2 .

Abstract:A series of 21 sulfoester and sulfonamide derivatives comprising two aromatic rings was synthesized to investigate the effect of the presence of either electron-donating (ED) or electron-withdrawing (EW) groups on the intramolecular π-stacking assembly. The positioning of ED or EW moieties was carried out directly on one of the aromatic rings linked to the sulfonyl or sulfonamide moieties. In contrast, the other aromatic ring (phenyl or pyridine) was connected by a –CH 2 –CH 2 – spacer with the sulfonyl or sulfonamide moiety. The purpose of having an ethyl spacer between the two aromatic rings was to achieve conformational flexibility, facilitating the intramolecular π-stacking assembly between the two aromatic rings. The use of sulfoester/sulfonamide groups allowed more conformational flexibility to attain desired orientations in solids with the interplay of the hydrogen-bonding interactions. Between the two functional groups, sulfonamides offered a more hydrogen-rich environment due to the amine moiety and may exhibit higher H-bonding propensity than the sulfoester moiety. The central idea here was to study the interplay between the hydrogen-bonding and π⋯π interactions. The substituent groups chosen were categorized as strong electron-withdrawing (–CF 3 and –CN), weak electron-withdrawing (–Cl and –Br), neutral (–H), and good electron-donating (–CH 3 and –OCH 3 ) groups. Crystal structure analysis revealed the syn conformation for all the derivatives, enabling intramolecular π⋯π interactions between the two aromatic rings, whereas in the sulfonamide derivatives, the molecule takes either midway or anti conformations, except for one pyridine sulfonamide derivative, which showed the syn orientation but lacked intramolecular π-stacking interactions. The absence of any conventional H-bond forming functional groups in the sulfoester derivatives may have resulted in the syn geometry facilitated by intramolecular π-stacking interactions. Conversely, H-bond-forming functional groups in the sulfonamide derivatives could have prevented the syn conformation. The conformational analysis carried out employing density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the higher stability of the syn conformation over the midway and anti orientations.

Abstract:A study was designed to determine if there are changes in the perception of pain when the flow rate and pressure of an injected anesthetic are precisely controlled. Fifty dentists were given contralateral palatal injections. One side was injected with the Wand injector, a new delivery system that uses a microprocessor and an electric motor to precisely regulate flow rate during administration. The control side was injected using a standard manual syringe, in which flow rate and pressure are operator-dependent and cannot be controlled accurately. The subjects used two subjective scales to describe their perceived pain experience. When their responses were analyzed the Wand injector was found to be two- to three-times less painful than the manual injection. The results were statistically significant (p < .001). The authors conclude that there is an optimal flow rate of anesthetic solution at which the perception of pain during an injection is minimized.

Abstract:Up to now, the manipulation of intermolecular nonconjugation interactions in organic crystal is still facing great challeges due to the complexity of weak intermolecular interaction. Here we designed the molecules substituted by β-methylselenyl on naphtho[2,3-b:6,7-b′]dithiophene and anthra[2,3-b:6,7-b′]dithiophene respectively (anti-β-MS-NDT, anti-β-MS-ADT), which with anti-β-MS-BDT synthesized experimentally all exhibit a 2D brickwork π-stacking. Moreover, the maximum molecular carrier mobility we desinged can reach 3.30 cm2V-1s-1 and 16.46 cm2V-1s-1. It indicates the substitution of β-methylselenyl could be a strategy to directionally adjust the parent herringbone stacking into 2D brickwork π-stacking. Hirshfeld surface analysis and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) were used to investigate the nonconjugated interaction in the pitched π-stacking formed by β-methylthio substituted acenedithiophenes derivatives and the 2D brickwork π-stacking of the β-methylselenyl substituted ones. Wherein, the steric hindrance caused by the introduction of substituents promotes Csp2-Csp2•••π interaction to replace Csp2-H•••π to stabilize the face-to-face stacking. Moreover, by calculating the decomposition energy of the intermediate state model of the molecular stacking mode that may exist in the replace conversion process, it is found that the energy of this intermediate state is larger than that of the actual ones, finally confirmed the inevitability of the actual existence in this stacking. In addition, it is found that the β-methylselenyl substitution will show better phonon assistance than the β-methylthio substitution in dynamic disorder because of the reduction in intensity of special vibration modes. This study is a further step towards fully understanding the relationship between intermolecular interaction and regulation of molecular stacking.

Abstract:In a series of four silver(I) complexes containing nitrate and ethynide ligands attached to different aromatic rings, namely, [Ag-2(m-C CC6H4C C)]center dot 5AgNO(3) center dot 3H(2)O (1), 2[(AgC C)(2)-2,3-C4H2S]center dot 10AgNO(3) (2), [(AgC C)-3-py]center dot 3AgNO(3) (3), and 2[(AgC C)-2-pyz] center dot 6AgNO(3) center dot 3H(2)O (4) (py = pyridine; pyz = pyrazine), intermolecular pi-pi interaction dominates the assembly of supramolecular synthons Ag4 subset of C C-R-C C superset of Ag-4 and R-C C superset of Ag-4 to give infinite columnar structures exhibiting distinct pi-pi stacking modes. The decrease in aromaticity of the ring moieties in 1, 3, and 4 is accompanied by weakened a-a stacking, transforming from the parallel face-to-face mode in 1, through a displaced stacked arrangement in 3, to the edge-to-face contact in 4. Replacement of one ethynide moiety of m-phenylenediethynide ligand in I by nitrogen coordination sites on the aromatic ring in 3 and 4 was found to have a limited effect on interrupting the whole pi-pi stacking infinite column.

Abstract:The cooperative effects between T-shape stacking and hydrogen bond interactions in X-ben⊥pyr···H–F complexes were investigated in this work. The results indicate that the electron-withdrawing/donating substituents decrease/increase the magnitude of the binding energies compared to the unsubstituted X-ben⊥pyr···H–F (X = H) complex. The cooperative effects have been studied while using the atoms in molecules (AIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) methods, allowing us to evaluate the interplay between T-shape stacking and hydrogen bond interactions. There are good relationships among binding energies, Hammett constants, geometrical parameters, and the results of AIM and NBO analysis in X-ben⊥pyr···H–F complexes.

Direct Through‐Space Substituent–π Interactions in Noncovalent Arene–Fullerene Assemblies

Abstract:The arene–arene interactions between electron‐rich and deficient aromatics have been less understood. Herein, we focus on a [60]fullerene π‐surface as an electron‐deficient aromatics. Using a 1H signal of H2O@C60 as a magnetic probe, the presence of benzene–fullerene interactions was confirmed. To investigate substituent effects on the noncovalent arene–fullerene interactions, NMR titration experiments were carried out using an open‐[60]fullerene and a series of substituted benzenes, i.e., PhX (X = NO2, CN, Cl, OMe, H, CH3, and NH2), demonstrating a 1:2 stoichiometry with a positive correlation between stabilization energies upon the first association (ΔG1) and Hammet constants (σm). The destabilization of the self‐assembled structure for X = OMe with a σ‐withdrawing nature clearly showed direct through‐space substituent–π interactions describable by the Wheeler–Houk model while the second association was suggested to be considerably perturbed by the secondary effects.

Abstract:In this paper, semiempircal quantum chemistry calculations of geometrical structures, and energy level distributions of a series of substituted benzonitriles and their corresponding oligomers are presented Geometrical calculations of benzonitril and substituted oligobenzonitriles are performed by using the AM1 method combined with molecular mechanical conformational analysis. The calculations of electronic properties are carried out by using ZINDO/S-CI method. The substituents studied possess a large range of delta-pi electron-donor-acceptor capability, including methoxy, methyl? hydroxy, amino, flurine and nitro groups, located at parr, meta and ortho-position in benzenoid ring. Theoretical calculations show that when different groups are substituted in different positions of the benzenoid ring, the oligomers show different geometrical characteristics and exhibit regular electronic variations.
