Abstract:Objective: The volatile constituents of pine needles from pinus massoniana lamb planted in different area were analyzed to research the constituents difference among the samples from different area.Methods: Pine needles from pinus massoniana lamb were gathered from 5 province,and the oil were extracted through steam distillation.Volatile oil were analyzed by gas—chromatography—mass spectrometry.Results: There were various compositions identified from every oil sample,and 7 oil compositions including Caryophyllene、(Z,Z,Z)-1,5,9,9-tetramethyl-1,4,7-cycloundecatriene、(+)-Epi-bicyclosesquiphellandrene and so on were contained in total 5 samples.Conclusion:The results reveal that the essential oil compositions of pine needles from pinus massoniana lamb planted in different area were similar but the contents of some compounds different greatly.

Abstract:Doping states in a two-dimensional three-band Peierls-Hubbard model for the copper oxides are investigated with inhomogeneous Hartree-Fock (HF) and random-phase approximations. The doping states are sensitive to small changes of interaction parameters because they easily change [ital local] energy balance between different interactions around added holes. For the parameter values derived from constrained-density-functional methods for the copper oxides, added holes form isolated small ferromagnetic polar- ons. When the parameters are varied around these values, different types of doping states are obtained: For stronger on-site repulsion at Cu sites, larger ferromagnetic polarons are formed, which are qualitatively different from the small polarons; for stronger nearest-neighbor Cu-O repulsion, polarons are clumped or there occurs phase separation into Cu- and O-hole-rich regions; [ital Intersite] electron-lattice coupling rapidly changes the small polarons by quenching a Cu magnetic moment and [ital locally] distorting the lattice in an otherwise undistorted antiferromagnetic background. This is regarded as a rapid crossover from a Zhang-Rice singlet to a covalent molecular singlet, and occurs substantially below a critical strength for destruction of the stoichiometric antiferromagnetic state. However [ital intrasite] electron-lattice coupling, in contrast to the intersite coupling, does not dramatically affect the hole-doping states. Doping induces modes in magnetic, optical,more » and vibronic response functions. Local infrared-active phonon modes are induced in infrared absorption spectra for finite electron-lattice coupling. They are correlated with doping-induced particle-hole excitations observed in optical absorption spectra and in magnetic excitation spectra. These doping-induced particle-hole excitations are associated with the local HF eigenstates in the charge-transfer gap.« less
The monoterpenes as a characteristic marker for pine species distinction: a chemotaxonomic study from the Czech Republic

Abstract:For the purposes of chemotaxonomic distinction of four pine species Pinus nigra , Pinus ponderosa , Pinus rigida and Pinus sylvestris growing in the suburban landscape of the central part of the Czech Republic, resin extracts from tree trunks, needles and female cones were analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. Monoterpenes were shown to be the main terpene fraction of the resins of all studied pine species. On average, they made up 80% of the total terpene content. A characteristic monoterpene for distinguishing pine species was β-pinene, with high levels in P. ponderosa , moderate levels in P. rigida and low levels in P. sylvestris and P. nigra. P. sylvestris contained only trace amount of Δ-3-carene (0.6%) in resins from needles and thus belongs to the α-pinene chemotypic variation. Slight seasonal variability in terpene production was found for resins from needles of P. nigra and P. sylvestris . When comparing European populations according to the monoterpene composition of resins from needles, it can be stated that the α-pinene content increased in the order P. ponderosa < P. rigida < P. nigra < P. sylvestris while the β-pinene content changed in the opposite direction. This statement confirms the terpene biosynthesis uniformity of European pines.

[Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt in the treatment of portal hypertension].

Abstract:The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) represents an important advance in the treatment of complications of portal hypertension. The results from the first 10 TIPS procedures in Arhus are reported. We found, as also documented in other clinical series, that TIPS is more effective in controlling acute haemorrhage than treatment with sclerotherapy and specific medical treatment. Seven out of 10 were treated for acute haemorrhage, and two patients were treated for recurrent variceal bleeding in spite of at least 20 procedures of sclerotherapy and pharmaceutical therapy. One patient was treated with TIPS due to refractory ascites. All 10 TIPS procedures were satisfactory, in four patients it was necessary to embolize collaterals. There were no acute complications associated to the TIPS procedures, but one patient developed stenosis of the shunt within one year, and another chronic encephalopathy. Two patients died, one because of sepsis with Candida albicans, and the other of intracerebral bleeding 16 months after the TIPS procedure.
Volatiles of High-Elevation Five-Needle Pines: Chemical Signatures through Ratios and Insight into Insect and Pathogen Resistance

Abstract:High-elevation five-needle pine trees are a group of Pinus species in the subgenus Strobus that occur at the edges of plant growth near the alpine tree line. These species are ecologically very important and are also threatened by climate-driven insect outbreaks and an exotic pathogen. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play central roles in the environmental adaptation of plants and in their defense against insects and pathogens. For example, the VOCs emitted by some high-elevation five-needle pine species attract female, tree-killing mountain pine beetles (MPB, Dendroctonus ponderosae) in the pioneering phase whereas VOCs from other species strongly repel this foremost herbivore, but the mechanism is unknown. We collected and compared headspace VOCs from foliage of eight species of high-elevation five-needle pines in Europe and North America. Overall, VOCs differed quantitatively among species with few qualitative differences. Despite species emitting essentially the same compounds, Random Forest analysis correctly classified 117 of the 126 trees sampled by using VOCs and identified the most important compounds for species classification and for separating species resistant from those susceptible to MPB or white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola). These VOC 'fingerprints' resulted largely from species emitting distinctive ratios of compounds, rather than through presence of species-specific compounds. Importantly, these Pinus species vary greatly in resistance to the main herbivore (MPB) and pathogen (white pine blister rust) causing tree mortality. Thus, these findings provide insights and should guide research into understanding resistance and in developing tools to manage these important trees. For instance, studies into the functions of five-needle pine VOCs in defense against abiotic or biotic stressors should focus on blend ratios rather than on individual compounds.

Abstract:Atmospheric aerosol particles were collected in a Finnish Scots pine forest as part of a European Union project. Sampling was done in March-April 2003 with a high-volume sampler. Dynamic ultrasonic-assisted solvent extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were applied to the analysis of aerosol samples for analytes such as n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), oxidized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (oxy-PAHs), sesquiterpenes (SQT) and oxidized sesquiterpenes (oxy-SQT). The highest concentrations were found for the n-alkanes, which were present in a wide range (C11-C32) indicating both biogenic and anthropogenic sources. PAH compounds were found in every sample while oxy-PAH compounds were present in low concentrations in a few samples. A few oxidized monoterpenes, most notably (-)-verbenone and pinonaldehyde, were found in several samples in concentrations clearly exceeding the PAH concentrations. The effect of temperature could be seen in most samples, where the concentrations of n-alkanes declined with decreasing temperatures. Particle formation events were accompanied by higher concentrations of heavy n-alkanes, verbenone and pinonaldehyde.
[Comparison of chemical components of essential oils in needles of Pinus massoniana Lamb and Pinus elliottottii Engelm from Guangxi]

Abstract:Essential oils were extracted by steam distillation from the needles of Pinus massoniana Lamb and Pinus elliottottii Engelm grown in Guangxi. Various factors such as pine needle dosage and extraction time which may influence the oil yield were investigated. The optimum conditions were found to be as follows: pine needle dosage 700 g, extraction time 5 h. The essential oil yields from the needles of Pinus massoniana Lamb and Pinus elliottottii Engelm were 0.45% and 0.19%, respectively. Moreover, the chemical compositions of the essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Sixty four components in the essential oil from needle of Pinus massoniana Lamb were separated and twenty of them (98.59%) were identified while seventy three components in the essential oil from needle of Pinus elliottottii Engelm were separated and twenty nine of them (94.23%) were identified. Generally, the compositions of the essential oils from needles of the two varieties were similar but the contents of some compounds differed greatly. Especially, the content of alpha-pinene in the essential oils from Pinus massoniana Lamb needles was 2.6 times as that from Pinus elliottottii Engelm needles, but the content of beta-pinene was less than the latter. Mono- and sesquiterpenes were the main composition of the essential oils from Pinus massoniana Lamb and Pinus elliottottii Engelm needles.
Towards improved comparability of studies addressing atmospheric concentrations of semivolatile organic compounds based on their sequestration in pine needles

Abstract:Coniferous needles can be used as a passive air sampler of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOC) and an indicator of atmospheric pollution patterns and trends. There is limited information on whether different parts of the plant (e.g., foliage leaves, dwarf shoots, twig, etc.) contain different levels of SVOC. Only few studies have compared levels of SVOC surface layer of wax and to their total content in all needle tissues and what affects an uptake and distribution of SVOC. It is important to have better understanding of the extent to which sampling and sample preparation procedures affect measured levels of SVOC in pine needles and reduce comparability of data from samples processed in different ways. In the present study, we assessed an impact of various sampling and sample preparation techniques on the levels of SVOC in Pinus sylvestris needles. While the impact of various storing, washing and drying methods was not significant, presence of dwarf shoots in the sample or structural damage of needles affected the results significantly. Results show that levels of SVOC in dwarf shoots are 2-8 times higher than those in foliage leaves. Therefore, dwarf shoots must be carefully removed before foliage leaves extraction to improve comparability of results. There were different patterns in SVOC on the surface of the foliage leaves compared to the whole leaves. An uptake of these substances by the surface wax as well as their occurrence in the internal structure was of function of the physico-chemical properties of the substances (log Kow, molar weight).

Abstract:The similarity comparisons between single-task walking and dual-task walking on Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients has been commonly performed for cognitive declination measurement. This paper presents a personalized gait similarity measurement approach based on Hidden Markov model for the self-comparison between the single-task walking and dual-task walking. Compared with traditional approaches which use statistics parameters comparison on normal group and AD group, the proposed personalized HMM-based self-comparison approach can avoid the dilemma resulted from personal differences such as walking habits and physical conditions such as height and weight. In this paper, two groups, 42 AD patients and 64 healthy control (HC) people, participate the experiments. The results show the promising of the proposed approach in comparing the AD from the normal people.
On-Line Field Measurements of Monoterpene Emissions from Scots Pine by Proton-Transfer-Reaction Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:We measured the daily patterns of monoterpene emissions from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees in a boreal coniferous forest in August and September 2004, using an on-line chamber method combined with a proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) analyzer. The on-line measurements were made in two chambers with a one-year old shoot inside. Simultaneous measurements were performed for carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange, transpiration (H2O), exchange of trace gases (NOx, O-3), photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), air temperature and relative humidity (RH). The composition of the monoterpene emission did not change during the measurement period, with Delta(3)-carene and alpha-pinene being the dominant species. The total monoterpene emission rate (per needle area) was on average 0.5 ng m(-2) s(-1), varied from non detectable to 2.1 ng m(-2) s(-1), and showed a typical diurnal pattern with afternoon maximum and nighttime minimum. The emission rates determined with this on-line chamber method were in agreement with results from a simultaneously used established adsorbent sampling technique with offline GC-MS analysis. The monoterpene emissions from the chamber walls were correlated with the chamber temperature and this measurement artifact was dominating at night. Emission rates normalized to 30 degrees C, using temperature regression coefficient of 0.09 degrees C-1, ranged from 2.1 mu g g(dw)(-1) h(-1) to 4.4 mu g -(dw)(-1) h(-1). Measurements of emission dynamics of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) together with plant physiological activity are urgently needed for the development of mechanistic BVOC emission models in order to assess their regional and global influence.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a key role in atmospheric chemistry and physics. They participate in photochemical reactions in the atmosphere, which have direct implications on climate through, e.g. aerosol particle formation. Forests are important sources of VOCs, and the limited resources and infrastructures often found in many remote environments call for the development of portable devices. In this research, the potential of needle trap microextraction and portable gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for the study of VOCs at forest site was evaluated. Measurements were performed in summer and autumn 2014 at the Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR II) in Hyytiälä, Finland. During the first part of the campaign (summer) the applicability of the developed method was tested for the determination of monoterpenes, pinonaldehyde, aldehydes, amines and anthropogenic compounds. The temporal variation of aerosol precursors was determined, and evaluated against temperature and aerosol number concentration data. The most abundant monoterpenes, pinonaldehyde and aldehydes were successfully measured, their relative amounts being lower during days when particle number concentration was higher. Ethylbenzene, p- and m-xylene were also found when wind direction was from cities with substantial anthropogenic activity. An accumulation of VOCs in the snow cover was observed in the autumn campaign. Results demonstrated the successful applicability of needle trap microextraction and portable gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for the rapid in situ determination of organic gaseous compounds in the atmosphere.
Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography, A Valuable Technique for Screening and Semiquantitation of Different Chemical Compounds in Ultrafine 30 Nm and 50 Nm Aerosol Particles

Abstract:Comprehensive two dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOF-MS) was used for screening and semiquantitation of semivolatile organic compounds in aerosol particles. As the volatility was a prerequisite parameter for the analysis, some compounds were transformed via derivatization such as silylation into more volatile ones. The identification of the analytes was made by comparing the GC retention indices and the TOF mass spectra with the NIST and the Golm metabolome database reference libraries. The data treatment was simplified by exploiting an additional classification of the identified compounds, namely the main functional group or specific element present in the molecule leading to different groups of compounds. This methodology was applied to identify compounds in 30 ± 4 nm, 50 ± 5 nm and total suspended particles (TSP) collected during spring and autumn of 2009 and summer of 2010 at the Station for Measuring Forest Ecosystem Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR II) at Hyytiälä (Finland). The number of identified compounds was higher than 400, which were the most relevant compounds present in the samples, in terms of concentrations. The analysis of aerosol particles of different sizes, collected simultaneously, revealed that the number of compounds increased with the particle size whereas the normalized response factor decreased in most of the cases, aldehydes being an exception. This decrease could be associated with the formation or aggregation of new compounds onto the particles when they grow in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Objective: Study the chemical constituents of ethyl acetate extraction from the pine needles of Pinus massoniana Lamb.Methods: The chemical constituents were isolated and purified by solvent extract and chromatography on silica gel,and GC-MS,HPLC and standard comparison.Their structures were determined on the basis of spectral data analyses.Results: Six compounds were isolated,and two of them were identified as Vanillin and Dihydroactinidiolide,which were the aroma components in the plant.Conclusion: Two main compounds are isolated from this plant for the first time.

Abstract:Introduction: Larch oleoresin has been described regarding several biological activities and medicinal applications, such as wound healing and treatment of ulcers, but little is known about its chemical composition. Material and methods: Eight oleoresins from Larix decidua Mill. obtained from four companies and one adulterated control were therefore investigated to determine their content of essential oils and to verify possible differences in their composition in relation to the harvest and manufacturing processes. Essential oils (EOs) were isolated by distillation and the yield was analysed. Results and discussion: The yield of EO varied among all samples. The yield of the pure larch samples covered a range of 7.8% to 15.5%. A higher yield (19.0%) was observed for adulterated control, which contained oleoresins from different Pinaceae trees. Age of samples had no impact on yield. However, there was a significant statistical variation (p 10%) compared to early or late summer ( 50%), followed by β-pinene (>6%), D-limonene (>2.5%), α-terpineol (>0.9%), β-myrcene (>0.2%), and 3-carene (>0.05%). Samples were grouped using multivariate data analysis (MVDA) with respect to the chemical variation between the oleoresins' EOs. The resulting four clusters were named low (low yield obtained for the samples), mixed (mixed oleoresin from different Pinaceae species, adulteration control), old (old oleoresin kept in the institute), and normal (other oleoresins) samples, each presenting distinct chemical biomarkers. There were considerable differences between site and time of collection. Essential oil yield did not always meet requirements as defined by the German Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia. In addition, adulterated or aged samples could be identified as compared to pure and fresh larch oleoresins. Conclusion: We conclude that larch oleoresin used for pharmaceutical applications has to be carefully analysed and standardised to guarantee reproducible product quality.

Temperature and light dependence of the VOC emissions of Scots pine

Abstract:Abstract. The volatile organic compound (VOC) emission rates of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were measured from trees growing in a natural forest environment at two locations in Finland. The emission rate measurements were carried out using a dynamic flow through technique with samples collected on adsorbent tubes and analyzed using thermodesorption followed by a gas chromatograph with a mass-selective detector (GC-MS). The standard emission potentials (at 303.15 K and 1000 µmol photons m−2 s−1) were calculated for the measured compounds using nonlinear regression to fit the experimental data to temperature and light dependent emission algorithms. The observed total VOC emission rates varied between 21 and 874 ng/g(dw)*h and 268 and 1670 ng/g(dw)*h in southern and northern Finland, respectively. A clear seasonal cycle was detected with high emission rates in early spring, a decrease of the emissions in late spring and early summer, high emissions again in late summer, and a gradual decrease in autumn. The main emitted compounds were Δ3-carene (southern Finland) and α- and β-pinene (northern Finland), with approximate relative contributions of 60–70% and 60–85% of the total observed monoterpene emission rates, respectively. Sesquiterpene (β-caryophyllene) and 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MBO) emissions were initiated in early summer at both sites. The observed MBO emission rates were between 1 and 3.5% of the total monoterpene emission rates. The sesquiterpene emission rates varied between 2 and 5% of the total monoterpene emission rates in southern Finland, but were high (40%) in northern Finland in spring. Most of the measured emission rates were found to be well described by the temperature dependent emission algorithm. The calculated standard emission potentials were high in spring and early summer, decreased somewhat in late summer, and were high again towards autumn. The experimental coefficient β ranged from 0.025 to 0.19 (average 0.10) in southern Finland, with strongest temperature dependence in spring and weakest in late summer. Only the emission rates of 1,8-cineole were found to be both light and temperature dependent. However, there were irregularities with the performance of the exponential temperature algorithm, and our results suggest that especially during the spring recovery period of the vegetation there may be several different processes contributing to the VOC emissions of Scots pine.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been important monitoring targets in the atmosphere due to their deleterious biological effects. Pine needles have been used to monitor atmospheric pollutants. An analytical method was developed to measure 21 PAHs, 14 alkyl PAHs, 7 PCBs, and 23 OCPs in pine needles using ultrasonically assisted extraction and gas chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS). The ranges of the lower limits of detection of PAHs, PCBs, and OCPs were 0.01–0.05, 0.02–0.06, and 0.01–0.07 μg/kg, respectively. The feasibility of the proposed method was validated by analyzing dust standard reference materials of the samples, which gave satisfactory results with a precision of 0.83%–7.80% (PAHs), 0.93%–4.78% (PCBs), and 0.73%–4.71% (OCPs), and an accuracy of 89.2%–102% (PAHs), 94.6%–109% (PCBs), and 99.4%–102% (OCPs). The PAHs, PCBs, and OCPS were determined from real pine needle samples using the developed method.

Abstract:[Objective] To research on the aroma chemical components from the pine needles of Pinus massoniana Lamb. [Method] Ethanol extraction and acetic ether extraction were adopted. Based on silica gel column chromatography separation, components of pine needles were identified and analyzed by GC-MS, HPLC and standard comparison. [Result] A total of 6 components were isolated from the pine needles. And the main components were vanillin and dihydroactinidiolide. [Conclusion] The two components were isolated from the pine needles of P. massoniana for the first time.

Abstract:Objective To analyze the composition and content of essential oil from Pine cone of Pinus koraiensis,and compared the extraction effect of three kinds of solid-phase micro-extraction fiber on essential oil from Pine cone of Pinus koraiensis.Methods The essential oil from Pine cone of Pinus koraiensis was extracted by PA,PDMS and PDMS/DVB-three fiber,the chemical composition was analyzed by GC-MS,and their extraction sensitivity was evaluated by cumulative area normalization value.Results PA extracted 43 kinds of compounds,PDMS and PDMS/DVB extracted 46 kinds of compounds respectively,in which 13 kinds of ingredients were in common.Conclusion The component of essential oil in Pine cone of Pinus koraiensis are mainly monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes,in which high content of compounds are α-Pinene,D-Limonene,β-Pinene,(1S)-3,7,7-Trimethylbicyclohept-3-ene,et al.Among the essential oil extracted from Pine cone of Pinus koraiensis by three kinds of fibers,there are obvious differences both in the type and quantity,PDMS is the best fiber for essential oil extraction through comparing the type,quantity and cumulative area normalization value.

Abstract:In the search for a quick and less labor-intensive method for determining terpene emissions of high emitting wood like Pinus sylvestris , this study utilized near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) combined with multivariate analysis methods and compared it to the standard measurement method according to the EN 16516 standard. The spectra were measured on the surface of solid-wood samples and correlated with the simultaneously determined air concentrations of terpenes. For α-pinene and 3-carene, prediction models were created using partial least squares regression (PLSR). Both work with determination coefficients of 0.77 and a Root Mean Square Error of Prediction (RMSEP) of 12% of the maximum emissions achievable in this study. A model based on the sum of the two terpenes was built and tested to determine the predictive capability of multiple similar substances simultaneously from the NIR recording. The model performs slightly worse, with a determination coefficient of 0.71 and RMSEP of 13%. Despite continuous expansion of the datasets for multiple models, no better metrics were achieved, likely because of the heterogeneous structure of wood when scanning a solid-wood surface. Systematic deviations were observed in particularly low reference ranges, which may indicate non-linearity in the relationship between terpenes and the NIR signal.
