Abstract:For elliptic systems with block structure in the upper half-space and t-independent coefficients, we settle the study of boundary value problems by proving compatible well-posedness of Dirichlet, regularity and Neumann problems in optimal ranges of exponents. Prior to this work, only the two-dimensional situation was fully understood. In higher dimensions, partial results for existence in smaller ranges of exponents and for a subclass of such systems had been established. The presented uniqueness results are completely new. We also elucidate optimal ranges for problems with fractional regularity data. Methods use and improve, with some new results, all the machinery developed over the last two decades to study such problems: the Kato square root estimates and Riesz transforms, Hardy spaces associated to operators, off-diagonal estimates, non-tangential estimates and square functions and abstract layer potentials to replace fundamental solutions in the absence of local regularity of solutions. This self-contained monograph provides a comprehensive overview on the field and unifies many earlier results that have been obtained by a variety of methods.

Abstract:We obtain Riesz transform bounds and characterise operator-adapted Hardy spaces to solve boundary value problems for singular Schrödinger equations $-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)+aVu=0$ in the upper half-space $\mathbb{R}^{1+n}_{+}$ with boundary dimension $n\geq 3$. The coefficients $(A,a,V)$ are assumed to be independent of the transversal direction to the boundary, and consist of a complex-elliptic pair $(A,a)$ that is bounded and measurable with a certain block structure, and a non-negative singular potential $V$ in the reverse Hölder class $\mathrm{RH}^{q}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ for $q\geq \max\{\frac{n}{2},2\}$. We find extrapolation intervals for exponents $p$ around $2$ on which the Dirichlet problem is well-posed for boundary data in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, and the associated Regularity problem is well-posed for boundary data in Sobolev spaces $\dot{\mathcal{V}}^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ that are adapted to the potential $V$, when $p>1$. The results permit boundary data in the Dziubanski--Zienkiewicz Hardy space $\mathrm{H}^{1}_{V}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ and adapted Hardy--Sobolev spaces $\dot{\mathrm{H}}^{1,p}_{V}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ when $p\leq 1$. We also obtain comparability of square functions and nontangential maximal functions for the solutions with their boundary data.

Abstract:We consider vector-valued elliptic boundary value problems and parabolic initial-boundary value problems on abstract Banach spaces of class HT . For a very general class of boundary conditions, which includes, but is not limited to the classical cases of Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions, we show L p -maximal regularity of the system. We do not restrict ourselves to the homogeneous case, but also identify the temporal and boundary trace spaces, which are both sufficient and necessary to obtain a unique solution in the L p -maximal regularity space. Our results are based on a (partial) Fourier–Laplace transform of the problem in the half-space case, leading to elliptic boundary value problems which have to satisfy variants of the Lopatinskii–Shapiro condition [34] to be solvable. The parabolic theory is then developed with use of tools from modern harmonic analysis such as the bounded H ∞ -calculus and the Kalton–Weis theorem.

Abstract:We show that functions in certain Hardy classes of solutions to higher-order iterated Vekua equations share properties of functions in the classical holomorphic Hardy spaces. Also, we show that a Schwarz boundary value problem for the higher-order Vekua equation is uniquely solvable when the boundary conditions are with respect to boundary values in the sense of distributions.

Abstract:We give new characterizations of the optimal data space for the $L^p(bD,\sigma)$-Neumann boundary value problem for the $\bar{\partial}$ operator associated to a bounded, Lipschitz domain $D\subset\mathbb{C}$. We show that the solution space is embedded (as a Banach space) in the Dirichlet space and that for $p=2$, the solution space is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space.

Abstract: Let $L= -\Delta_{\mathbb{H}^n}+V$ be a Schr\"odinger operator on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$, where $\Delta_{\mathbb{H}^n}$ is the sub-Laplacian and the nonnegative potential $V$ belongs to the reverse H\"older class $B_{\frac{Q}{2}}$ and $Q$ is the homogeneous dimension of $\mathbb{H}^n$. The Riesz transforms associated with the Schr\"odinger operator $L$ are bounded from $L^1(\mathbb{H}^n)$ to $L^{1,\infty}(\mathbb{H}^n)$. The $L^1$ integrability of the Riesz transforms associated with $L$ characterizes a certain Hardy type space denoted by $H^1_L(\mathbb{H}^n)$ which is larger than the usual Hardy space $H^1(\mathbb{H}^n)$. We define $H^1_L(\mathbb{H}^n)$ in terms of the maximal function with respect to the semigroup $\big \{e^{-s L}:\; s>0 \big\}$, and give the atomic decomposition of $H^1_L(\mathbb{H}^n)$. As an application of the atomic decomposition theorem, we prove that $H^1_L(\mathbb{H}^n)$ can be characterized by the Riesz transforms associated with $L$. All results hold for stratified groups as well.

Abstract:We discuss a class of linear control problems in a Hilbert space setting, which covers diverse systems such as hyperbolic and parabolic equations with boundary control and boundary observation even including memory terms. We introduce abstract boundary data spaces in which the control and observation equations can be formulated without strong geometric constraints on the underlying domain. The results are applied to a boundary control problem for the equations of visco-elasticity.

Abstract:We show that if $u$ is a solution to a linear elliptic differential equation of order $2m\geq 2$ in the half-space with $t$-independent coefficients, and if $u$ satisfies certain area integral estimates, then the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values of $u$ exist and lie in a Lebesgue space $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ or Sobolev space $\dot W^p_{\pm 1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Even in the case where $u$ is a solution to a second order equation, our results are new for certain values of~$p$.

Abstract:We provide a summary of the continuity properties of the boundary integral operator corresponding to the double layer potential associated to the fundamental solution of a {\em nonhomogeneous} second order elliptic differential operator with constant coefficients in Hölder and Schauder spaces on the boundary of a bounded open subset of ${\mathbb{R}}^n$. The purpose is two-fold. On one hand we try present in a single paper all the known continuity results on the topic with the best known exponents in a Hölder and Schauder space setting and on the other hand we show that many of the properties we present can be deduced by applying results that hold in an abstract setting of metric spaces with a measure that satisfies certain growth conditions that include non-doubling measures as in a series of papers by Garc\'ıa-Cuerva and Gatto in the frame of Hölder spaces and later by the author.

Abstract:Classical boundary Hardy inequality, that goes back to 1988, states that if $1 < p < \infty, \ ~\Omega$ is bounded Lipschitz domain, then for all $u \in C^{\infty}_{c}(\Omega)$, $$\int_{\Omega} \frac{|u(x)|^{p}}{\delta^{p}_{\Omega}(x)} dx \leq C\int_{\Omega} |\nabla u(x) |^{p}dx,$$ where $\delta_\Omega(x)$ is the distance function from $\Omega^c$. In this article, we address the long standing open question on the case $p=1$ by establishing appropriate boundary Hardy inequalities in the space of functions of bounded variation. We first establish appropriate inequalities on fractional Sobolev spaces $W^{s,1}(\Omega)$ and then Brezis, Bourgain and Mironescu's result on limiting behavior of fractional Sobolev spaces as $s\rightarrow 1^{-}$ plays an important role in the proof. Moreover, we also derive an infinite series Hardy inequality for the case $p=1$.

Abstract:We consider first-order elliptic differential operators acting on vector bundles over smooth manifolds with smooth boundary, which is permitted to be noncompact. Under very mild assumptions, we obtain a regularity theory for sections in the maximal domain. Under additional geometric assumptions, and assumptions on an adapted boundary operator, we obtain a trace theorem on the maximal domain. This allows us to systematically study both local and nonlocal boundary conditions. In particular, the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition occurs as a special case. Furthermore, we study contexts which induce semi-Fredholm and Fredholm extensions.

Abstract:We study Hardy inequalities for $p$-Schrödinger operators on general weighted graphs. Specifically, we prove a Maz'ya-type result, where we characterize the space of Hardy weights for $ p $-Schrödinger operators via a generalized capacity. The novel ingredient in the proof is the demonstration that the simplified energy of the $ p $-Schrödinger energy functional is compatible with certain normal contractions. As a consequence, we obtain a necessary integrability criterion for Hardy weights. Finally, using some tools of criticality theory, we investigate the existence of minimizers in the Hardy inequalities and discuss relations to Cheeger type estimates.

Abstract:In the paper, we establish and study Hardy spaces with variable exponents on spaces of homogeneous type (X, d, ?) in the sense of Coifman and Weiss, where d may have no any regularity property and ? fulfills the doubling property only. First we introduce the Hardy spaces with variable exponents Hp(?)(X) by using the wavelet Littlewood-Paley square functions and give their equivalent characterizations. Then we establish the atomic characterization theory for Hp(?)(X) via the new Calder?n-type reproducing identity and the Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory. Finally, wegive a unified method for defining these variable Hardy spaces Hp(?)(X) in terms of the same spaces of test functions and distributions. More precisely, we introduce the variable Carleson measure spaces CMOp(?) L2 (X) and characterize the variable Hardy spaces via the distributions of CMOp(?) L2 (X).

Abstract:The Hardy space $H^{p}$ of vector valued analytic functions in tube domains in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and with values in Banach space are defined. Vector valued analytic functions in tube domains in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ with values in Hilbert space and which have vector valued tempered distributions as boundary value are proved to be in $H^{p}$ corresponding to Hilbert space if the boundary value is in $L^{p}$ with values in Hilbert space. A Poisson integral representation for such vector valued analytic functions is obtained.

Abstract:We introduce an abstract framework for elliptic boundary value problems in a variational form. Given a non-negative quadratic form in a Hilbert space, a boundary pair consists of a bounded operator, the boundary operator, and an auxiliary Hilbert space, the boundary space, such that the boundary operator is bounded from the quadratic form domain into the auxiliary Hilbert space. These data determine a Neumann and Dirichlet operator, a Dirichlet solution and a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. The basic example we have in mind is a manifold with boundary, where the quadratic form is the integral over the squared derivative, and the boundary map is the restriction of a function to (a subset of) the boundary of the manifold. As one of the main theorems, we derive a resolvent formula relating the difference of the resolvents of the Neumann and Dirichlet operator with the Dirichlet solution and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. From this, we deduce a spectral characterisation for a point being in the spectrum of the Neumann operator in terms of the family of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators. The relation can be generalised also to Robin-type boundary conditions. We identify conditions expressed purely in terms of boundary pairs, which allow us to relate our concept with existing concepts such as boundary triples. We illustrate the theory by many examples including Jacobi operators, Laplacians on spaces with (non-smooth) boundary and the Zaremba (mixed boundary conditions) problem.

Abstract:We study boundary value problems for first-order elliptic differential operators on manifolds with compact boundary. The adapted boundary operator need not be selfadjoint and the boundary condition need not be pseudo-local. We show the equivalence of various characterisations of elliptic boundary conditions and demonstrate how the boundary conditions traditionally considered in the literature fit in our framework. The regularity of the solutions up to the boundary is proven. We show that imposing elliptic boundary conditions yields a Fredholm operator if the manifold is compact. We provide examples which are conveniently treated by our methods.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of operator-valued Hardy spaces via wavelet method. This approach is parallel to that in noncommutative martingale case. We show that our Hardy spaces defined by wavelet coincide with those introduced by Tao Mei via the usual Lusin and Littlewood-Paley square functions. As a consequence, we give an explicit complete unconditional basis of the Hardy space H1(R) when H1(R) is equipped with an appropriate operator space structure.
