Abstract:After sixty years of quantitative biophysical modeling of neurons, the identification of neuronal dynamics from input-output data remains a challenging problem, primarily due to the inherently nonlinear nature of excitable behaviors. By reformulating the problem in terms of the identification of an operator with fading memory, we explore a simple approach based on a parametrization given by a series interconnection of Generalized Orthonormal Basis Functions (GOBFs) and static Artificial Neural Networks. We show that GOBFs are particularly well-suited to tackle the identification problem, and provide a heuristic for selecting GOBF poles which addresses the ultra-sensitivity of neuronal behaviors. The method is illustrated on the identification of a bursting model from the crab stomatogastric ganglion.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the identification of neuronal system dynamics from input - output data. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to identify the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of neuronal systems from experimental data. This is mainly due to the fact that neuronal behavior is essentially nonlinear, especially the hypersensitivity of its excitatory behavior. By reformulating the problem as identifying an operator with memory decay properties, the author proposes a simple method based on the tandem parameterization of generalized orthogonal basis functions (GOBFs) and static artificial neural networks (ANNs). This method is particularly suitable for dealing with the identification problem of neuronal systems and provides a heuristic method for selecting GOBF poles to cope with the hypersensitivity of neuronal behavior. The paper also illustrates the application of this method through a bursting model from the crab gastric rhythmic activity - generating system.
